Upgrading to gstreamer 0.8.11 has solved the crashing problem.

Upon closer inspection, I can see that ~/.xscreensaver _is_ actually
being changed, but the changes do not take effect, and the next time I
start xscreensaver-demo, the settings are back to what they were.

I upgraded to libhal0 0.4.2-5 and this has fixed the problem.
So the bug is that libnautilus-burn0 depends on libhal0 (>= 0.2.93),
but it actually requires a newer version of libhal0 to work at all.
