In the end, I needed to play with the PanelSize option, since it listed
1280x1024 as an available option for the VGA output, but only 640x480 for LVDS
(it's actually not a laptop, but a cheapo machine with an on-board ATI chip).

When I now start X, the screen goes black and shortly after, the CRT power-
