I now have tested several kernel versions on the sidux box (using the
sidux kernels):
2.6.22.10-rc1-slh-smp-1 works. There are no locking/timeout problems.
With all other versions the problem occurs:

Indeed the kernel versions differ:
The client without the problem runs 2.6.22-3-686.
On the sidux box that does show the symptom, several 2.6.24 versions
have been run.
The ubuntu clients currently are using 2.6.24-16-generic.
So this might be a reason. I hope to soon
This is strange. We have the described problem with 2 Ubuntu "Hardy
Heron" clients and one debian/sid (sidux) client. Another client (pure
sid) does not show this symptom. All clients are up to date.
We already have compared several things (NIS-configuration,
autofs-scripts, mount-options, etc.)

we have run in exactly this problem of mixing ubuntu and debian
packages. On delivering a wrong package you get a "size mismatch" error
on "apt-get [dist-]upgrade".
Is there a new version available yet? We would like to test it, too, if
possible.
How will you fix this problem?
