I made some progress:
the problem seems to be the proprietary fglrx driver. I changed back to
the radeon driver (I didn't uninstalled fglrx completely) and .wine was
created with no issues. Later, I moved back to fglrx and everything
seems fine.

Just to check, I tried madwifi-ng-{source,tools} r1587 from
snapshot.debian.net. That one didn't work either. I had to go back to
r1500 to be able to connect again. I hope this info helps.

move /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libntfs.conf/libntfs.conf to
/etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libntfs.conf
and got GNOME back :)
together with all my other applications...

I find a similar problem with my custom build 2.6.17 kernel. With the
same setup, but using a 2.6.16 kernel, everything works, so it does
seems like the kernel is guilty of this one.
The 'BusType' workaround does seem to work on 2.6.17, but it quite a bit
slower.
