Dear Maintainer,
The current version of HarfBuzz in Debian is outdated.
Upstream version is 1.2.6 and it has many bugfixes and improvements.
Please update to latest version.

I can't reproduce the bug because of the ancient versions of the
packages reported, but I suppose that after 9 years (almost), this bug
could be closed or archived.

The files in conf.avail/ (symlinked in conf.d/) are there for system
wide configuration. The use of "append" there is right, because that
leaves the choice to each user to change their config, if they want
(using "assign" in ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf ).
The problem arises because fonts option
I found the cause (maybe).
Probably the fuzzy fonts are all OpenType fonts. Starting from
freetype 2.5.0.1, the Adobe CFF engine is the default rasterizer for
those class of fonts.

I found the typo, it's in the fontconfig-config.links file, inside
fontconfig_2.11.0-2.debian.tar.gz
That file has been created in the last revision of fontconfig to fix bugs
#638262 and #605574 (as indicated in the changelog).

Dear Maintainer,
I've only did a 'dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config' but probably this file
(a symbolic link) existed before, but I noticed it only now.
There's probably a typo somewhere in post-install script or in source files.
