Adding those settings to the default configuration (and after fixing
bug #731724) will get the Debian font aspect on par with Ubuntu and
that should be great.
But I want to point out that adding such .conf files in conf.avail
should be done in the right manner.
The above code is how Ubuntu wrote their additional .conf files, but
it's wrong as I reported to them in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fontconfig/+bug/1192175

I read everywhere that autohinter (also known as greyscale hinting) is
not designed to work with subpixel rendering.
