Thank you Stephen. Blacklisting both snd-cs4232 AND snd-wavefront is indeed key. I now have working sound using the original Lenny kernel :-) Below are the contents of the file I created (/etc/modprobe.d/crystal_4237b_fix) to achieve this. I consider this an appropriate workaround for the bug;
