I built the package using the provided debian source and applying the patch
referenced above in terminal.c and i can confirm that i dont get the error on
trying to start a mate terminal.

To confirm that I dont have either xmonad or marco installed.
I am probably an edge case in that I am running mate under E17 as my desktop
environment.
