OK, I think I am beginning to get the picture. At the time one plugs it
into the USB socket, for this particular device, one should be sure to
have a keyboard also plugged into it, if one wants to use the mouse.
(But at least in my later tests, if didn't disable the laptop's own
keyboard. Hmmm.)

I'm not sure, but the problem seems to be the inability for clisp and sbcl to
find CLX.
I checked to make sure I had the sbcl version installed as well, and have tried
dpkg-reconfigure on it, and tried cleaning up old *.fasl et al files then
dpkg-reconfigure to rebuild all to no avail.

I think the problem is not just the dependency, because I downloaded
the dependencies and re-builded the package from source successfully.
Switchspell appeared in plugin list and worked well until I re-opened pidgin.
Now it shows disabled in plugin list with the following message on the details:

name.
I don't think it's necessary to change the chroot name based off of if a
directory or file type chroot is made.
This patch should be applied after the other patches are applied.
