You are using the Cygwin version of GNU make, which is, unfortunately,
not identical to the original version distributed by the FSF. In
particular, the FSF version doesn't have a "--win32" option.
So, you will need to contact the Cygwin folks/mailing lists, not these
lists, to get answers t

I've looked and wasn't able to find an answer to this error:
When using "make" version 3.79.1-5 and using the --win32 option to execute a
dos/command.com shell on win95/98 an access violation occurs.
For example:
make -e --win32 -f x.mk -i stuff
x.mk contains:
stuff:
echo stuff
