Asking for project ideas. Where to begin.

Hello Hurd, I'm a final year undergraduate Computer Science student at Kolkata. At the end of our course (which is 1+ year from now) the university requires that we do some kind of "project". As I am into free software, I want the work I do for this university project be useful to free software.
