Hello Hurd, I'm a final year undergraduate Computer Science student at Kolkata. At the end of our course (which is 1+ year from now) the university requires that we do some kind of "project". As I am into free software, I want the work I do for this university project be useful to free software. I'm thinking of doing some hurd related work as I'm interested in learning about Operating systems and kernels. I have few doubts though:
1. Is Hurd the right choice? Will I be able to do something useful and presentable in 1 year considering that I have so little knowledge and experience? Here I should state what I've learned in my course so far. I've learned Some basic operating system concepts (few chapters from Tanenbaum's book "Modern Operating Systems", *not* the MINIX 3 book), Computer organisation, 8085 assembly programming (and of course others which I'm omitting thinking they are not relevant). 2. Should I read the Minix 3 book and learn Minix 3 OS, before delving into Hurd? Finally, my classmate Pritam (in CC) also wants to work on the Hurd as we'll be doing this university project together.
