I'm using x4500 MHD with the latest X server and xf86-video-intel driver, commented load module section in xorg.conf to leave X server automatically do it, with KMS enabled too. It can successfully load dri and dri2 module(seen in Xorg.log.0). Everything seems work fine till now. Gnome with compiz

The Arch's stock kernel (as any other kernel) will always be enough: What this "special" kernel does is only to build used module inside the kernel, reducing the loading time. It's a lot of fun and you learn a lot about the linux kernel and your own machine by doing so, but this does not diminish

I have an EeePC 1000 and it works fine with Arch. It's running KDE 4.2 without problem. You'll always need to tweak those small machines since they are not that powerful.
