None that I know of, unfortunately. I eventually just backed up my files
from the command line (using xterm, since gnome's terminal was broken along
with everything else) and did a complete re-install of 8.10 from scratch. I
haven't had any problems so far, but it's only been a couple of days...

[Bug 303461] [NEW] Gconf errors in most gnome apps after upgrade to 8.10

2008-11-29 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid, rebooting, and logging in, I see
a black screen with numerous error windows, displaying the following
messages for nearly every gnome app that runs on startup:

"An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for
[gnome app]. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly."

and

"GConf error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible
causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you
have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See
http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1:
Could not send message to gconf daemon: Message did not receive a reply
(timeout by message bus))"

These errors appear whenever I attempt to run any app that relies on
gnome (for example, I can run xterm but not gnome-terminal), and make
Ubuntu nearly unusable for most tasks.

I am kind of a Linux newbie, but if you can tell me how to find whatever
log files would be relevant here from the terminal I'll post them if I
can. I can't get online from Ubuntu right now, and this is my only
machine, which complicates the process a bit.

To reproduce: Upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 (I am using Wubi; I don't
know if that is relevant), reboot, log in.

There are other users reporting the same bug at
http://ge.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?p=6197006 .
Also, there is a bug affecting only gnome-terminal that may be related at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/298426 .

[Bug 382661] [NEW] No sound when using Pidgin with Yahoo

2009-06-02 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

The title says it all, really. I'm using Pidgin with Ubuntu Jaunty. I
get sounds with every other protocol I use (Jabber, AIM, MSN, Facebook),
but not when I use Yahoo. There is no sound when a buddy logs on or off,
or when someone messages me. I tried to get around it by using buddy
pounces to play a sound when I receive a message, but that doesn't work,
either. I still get pop-up notifications with Yahoo (using the libnotify
plugin).

I'm experiencing the same problem as thomsit on wubi 8.04 upgraded to

[Bug 312501] [NEW] sometimes gnome-settings-daemon fails to start after login

2008-12-30 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid, with gnome-settings-daemon
2.24.0-0ubuntu3.3.

Sometimes when I log into Gnome, either after booting up or returning
from 'Suspend', gnome-settings-daemon fails to start. There is no error
message that I can see; I only know it isn't running because whatever
theme I happen to be using is replaced with an ugly default. If I then
start it from the command line it runs with no problem and my theme
displays as normal. There are no errors or anything displayed on the
command line.

As far as I can tell, there is no particular pattern to when this
happens. I'd guess it happens something like 1 in 4 or 5 times I log in.
If there's any more information I can give you, let me know. Thanks!

I am not sure that it is the same. Jsteinhart's fix only partially fixed

people there.

[Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

2008-12-31 Thread zorblek
I, too have been experiencing this bug with Ubuntu Intrepid.
Jsteinhart's fix appears to partially fix the problem. Before installing
the fix, when I attempted to play a flash video after a suspend cycle it
would play for a few seconds then stop, with no sound. When I switched
over to a console and back, the video would then resume and sounds would
play as normal.

Now that I have installed the fix, flash videos don't stop after a few
seconds. They continue to play, but I still don't get any sound from
them (or anything else). When I switch back from a console, the video
will pause in the middle of playback while all of the audio that i
missed plays, then it will resume from where I left off.

In any event, I still don't get any other sounds (with or without the
fix) until I switch to and from a console.

If there's any more useful information I can give you, let me know.

Well, my hunch was wrong. I got an invisible friend to go visible and
message me, and it made no difference. I also didn't get any noise when
it said they had logged in.

I don't think it's network-dependent. When I was getting sounds from one
conversation but not the other, the only other difference between them
was that the one I was getting sounds from was on Gtalk, and the one I
wasn't getting sounds from was on Yahoo. However, I've gotten sounds
from other people who were on Yahoo.

[Bug 313521] [NEW] "no space left on drive" error in Deluge even though "use full allocation" option is set

2009-01-03 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deluge-torrent

A torrent stopped at 96% with the error "No space left on drive" (which
was the case) however, I had set the "use full allocation" option as
soon as I installed Deluge. Unless I am misunderstanding what that
option does, Deluge should have pre-allocated the space needed for the
torrent (about 6 gigs) when I started downloading, and if there was not
enough space left on the partition, I should have gotten an error
message saying so at that time.

I was able to clear more space on the drive, and the torrent is now

[Bug 323841] [NEW] Ctrl-O doesn't open file

2009-01-31 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deluge-torrent

I'm having a couple of difficulties opening files from the 'Files' tab.
Typing Ctrl-O to doesn't open a selected file. Neither does double-
clicking a listed file; it always edits the filename instead. (I'm not
sure if this is the intended behavior or not, but if it is, it's
confusing.) The only way to open a file is to right-click it and select
'Open'.

[Bug 312501] Re: sometimes gnome-settings-daemon fails to start after login

2009-01-07 Thread zorblek
It happened again, so I checked before restarting gnome-settings-daemon
and there doesn't seem to be anything reported about it. But I am kind
of new to Linux, so maybe I am not looking everywhere it might be
reported?

[Bug 315503] [NEW] "Magic SysRq keys" don't work on laptop (Dell XPS M1210)

2009-01-09 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

After reading about the "Magic SysRq key" combinations, I have attempted
to use them several times when my laptop (a Dell XPS M1210) has crashed
for various reasons, and they have never worked. The specific sequences
I've tried were REISUB and RSEIUB, and neither had any visible effect.

This may have something to do with the keyboard layout. It's more or
less a normal QWERTY, but several keys share space, including SysRq,
which is on F11. To switch between them there is a Fn key which must be
pressed. So in theory, the full key combo would actually be
Alt+Fn+F11/SysRq+R and so on. But this doesn't seem to work. I've also
tried it without the Fn key, and that doesn't seem to work either. I
don't have a USB keyboard available, so I don't know if it works with
another keyboard attached.

If there's any other useful information I can give you, let me know.

[Bug 312262] [NEW] Ubuntu freezes with blinking lock keys

2008-12-29 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Intrepid has crashed three times successively on my Dell M1210
laptop. Each time it froze while the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights
blinked. It would not respond to any input until a hard reboot. The
first time was with a session that had been running for several hours.
Deluge was running, but I don't believe it was using much bandwidth. (I
don't know if that's relevant, but several people reporting similar bugs
have had it happen during periods of high bandwidth use.) The second two
crashes happened shortly after startup, while I was attempting to
investigate the first crash. During those, Miro was running (it starts
automatically), and Deluge may have been as well (I don't recall). I
don't have any Internet apps running right now except for Firefox and
Pidgin (I killed Miro as soon as it started). I've been using Intrepid
for a while now, and this is the first time this has happened. I don't
believe I've made any relevant system changes recently, but I couldn't
swear to it.

I'll post the log files here. If there's any other info I can give you,
feel free to ask. Thanks!

I'm not sure if it is the same bug. I'm still experiencing with the latest
updates in Intrepid. By the way, this fix works for me as well. I can't help
with a script, though.

No, this is different. PrntScrn and SysRq are on the same button, but I can
use them separately. To use PrntScrn, I have to hold Shift in addition to
Fn. Otherwise it registers as SysRq.

My problem turned out to be unrelated to this bug. I am, however, still
getting that error message. Here's the output of dmesg.

I have not had this problem in Jaunty. I actually believe I solved it by
reformatting and doing a clean install. I'm not 100% sure. At any rate, it's
no longer an issue for me. Thanks for checking, though!

[Bug 412038] [NEW] compiz interferes with panel autohide

2009-08-11 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When the Desktop Wall plugin is enabled and either the "Edge Flip
Pointer" or "Edge Flip DnD" options are selected, Compiz prevents panels
set to "autohide" from revealing themselves when the mouse is at the
edge of the screen. This affects gnome-panel and xfce4-panel, and
possibly others. I have seen forum posts that seem to indicate that
similar settings on other Compiz plugins will cause the same problem,
although I have not confirmed this myself.

I am experiencing the same bug with Pidgin 2.6.3 on Ubuntu Karmic. Also,
when Pidgin creates a new conversation window when someone messages me,
it appears in the foreground but does not have focus. This is always
very confusing and often leads to me screwing up something in whatever
window does have focus. Ideally it should either be created in the
foreground and not have focus or it should appear in the foreground with
focus.

[Bug 424167] [NEW] pressing the spacebar when evince first starts causes the sidebar to hide

2009-09-04 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I usually use the spacebar to scroll down in evince. But if I press the
spacebar immediately after evince starts, it hides the sidebar instead.
Since the first thing I usually want to do in a document is scroll down,
this is an annoying behavior. I suspect it happens in part because the
focus when evince first starts is on the sidebar pane, rather than the
main pane (pressing the down arrow causes it to go to the next
bookmark/thumbnail, rather than down a screen - this behavior is also
annoying, but less so). I'm not sure why pressing the spacebar would
cause it to close, though.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
MediaBuild: Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" - Release i386 (20090420.1)

[Bug 477921] [NEW] picard crashes while scanning

2009-11-07 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: picard

I have been using picard to scan a folder of a few hundred miscellaneous
MP3s. It always crashes somewhere in the middle of the operation.

The files are what is left after I have used the "cluster" command. I
select the whole folder and press "scan". It gets part of the way into
the list before it crashes, but I haven't been able to tell whether it
always crashes while scanning the same file.

I'm attaching the error log.

[Bug 477937] [NEW] listen doesn't play the next track in dynamic mode

2009-11-07 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: listen

When dynamic mode is on, listen doesn't play the next track
automatically. When it finishes playing a track, it just stops. I have
to manually tell it to play the next file. This is with shuffle and
repeat both turned off.

Also, this may or may not be related, but it also becomes permanently
unresponsive sometimes. There doesn't appear to be any particular
pattern to this (it happens whether a track is playing or not, and
happens both when the computer is being slow and when it isn't).

I've attached an error log from when I experienced both problems.

[Bug 502808] [NEW] USB drive opens in foreground window without focus

2010-01-03 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm using Nautilus 2.28.1 on Ubuntu Karmic. When I attach my external
USB drive, Nautilus automatically opens up a window displaying its
contents. The problem is that the window opens in the foreground but
doesn't have focus. I mostly use the keyboard, so when I don't want the
window I automatically hit alt-f4, but instead of closing the new window
it closes whatever window I was working in before. This happens
frequently and is really annoying. I would be fine if the window opened
in the background without focus so it didn't get in the way or in the
foreground with focus so that it could be easily closed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Bug 691789] [NEW] gnome-keybinding-properties prevents other programs from detecting keypresses

2010-12-17 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Setting a hotkey in gnome-keybinding-properties prevents other programs
from using that hotkey, even if no gnome programs are open. For example,
I have my multimedia keys set to play/pause, previous, next, and stop.
This prevents VLC from detecting those keys, even when there are no
Gnome programs that use those keybindings open. This means, in effect,
that I can either choose to use those keybindings only for Gnome
programs or only for VLC, but not both.

[Bug 641115] [NEW] nautilus memory leak

2010-09-17 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm running Ubuntu Lucid on a Dell XPS M1210 laptop. Nautilus uses ever-
increasing amounts of memory on my system (and a fair bit of the CPU,
too). This is new in Lucid. In Karmic, Nautilus usually used about
5%-10% of my memory (more if I was viewing lots of photos or something,
but the baseline was 10% at the very most). Now it typically uses at
least 7% at startup, which increases over time to as much as 30%. This
happens even if no Nautilus windows are open. If I kill the nautilus
process, when it comes back it uses 70-100% CPU until it's using at
least 10% memory again. (I would give absolute numbers here instead of
percentages, but I'm not sure which ones are which.) All of this happens
regardless of whether I ever open a Nautilus window.

I saw other memory-related bugs, but none of them look quite like what
I'm experiencing. The bottom line is that Nautilus memory usage wasn't a
problem for me in Karmic, but in Lucid it's slowing things down
considerably. I'll be happy to post whatever additional information is
needed.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: nautilus 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.1
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-25.43-generic 2.6.32.21+drm33.7

I do not. Installing it fixed the problem, but this is still annoying
because I have no interest in using f-spot. Thanks for the help, though!

[Bug 873973] [NEW] Banshee stops responding frequently

2011-10-14 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Frequency varies, but I'd say on average it freezes about once per hour.
As far as I can tell there's no particular pattern to it - It happens
whether or not I'm interacting with banshee or not. It also happens
whether or not any music is playing. RAM and CPU usage are normal, so
I'm pretty sure it's not freezing up for lack of resources. It seems
like sometimes the music keeps playing and sometimes it doesn't. I
suspect (although I haven't confirmed this) that it keeps playing the
rest of whatever track it's on but doesn't go on to the next one.

[Bug 667564] [NEW] some messages cause preview to be wider than the screen

2010-10-27 Thread zorblek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: checkgmail

Most messages display in the preview popup just fine, but some cause it
to expand to be wider than the screen, which prevents that message from
being closed again, since the links for that message are pushed beyond
the edge of the screen. This usually seems to happen with messages that
have HTML formatting, but not all HTML messages do it.
