[Bug 366104] Re: [Jaunty] Install incorrectly reports no other OS on system

2009-06-05 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
I've experimented with this a bit more, and discovered an unusual
behaviour which may help track this down. It turns out my machine has
two disks sdb1 and sdba. Looking at the image above, you'll see that
though it says "This computer has no operating systems on it", in fact
it means this *disk*.

Below the radio button for "Use the entire disk" you'll see it has a
drop down (I didn't notice this at first), that allows to select either
of the two disks, and furthermore selected initially for sda (not sdb),
even though sdb is displayed at the top of the window. If I select sdb
on the dropdown, nothing happens, but if I then reselect sda, then the
top part of the window switches to showing the partitions for sda, and
furthermore identifying it as containing several operating systems. (See
second image)

So there seems to be several problems with this dialog box, especially from the
viewpoint of a novice trying to install:
 1. It doesn't make it clear that it has found several disks
 2. It confuses "computer" with "disk"
 3. It is not at all clear that selecting from the dropdown of a different
control will change the display of the disk it is looking at
 4. The initial display doesn't match the dropdown with the display.

While I have your attention (maybe I should submit this as a separate
bug; your call). From the inital display, still not realising it was
talking about the second disk, I chose "install side by side" and let it
do its thing, assuming it would do the right thing. You can see the
result at the bottom part of the second image: it created a *tiny*
partition for Ubuntu, 2.5G, so that when I booted to it, and updated all
the software, the partition was 100% full, and I couldn't do anything
more with it at all. I'm still not sure how to undo the situation, or
increase the size of the partition, or remove Ubuntu so I can start
again. A bit frustrating.

What it did was

partition)"

[Bug 366093] [NEW] [Jaunty] Automatic installation of MP3 codecs in Movie player fails

install the necessary codecs for you, but then fails.

This is because the necessary repositories are not loaded in synaptic.

[Bug 366104] [NEW] [Jaunty] Install incorrectly reports no other OS on system

2009-04-24 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

Install reports there are no other OSs on the machine, which is
incorrect (Win XP is also installed).

However, it still asks if I want to "install them side by side" , and
warns that using the whole disk will delete Windows XP, so it *has*
identified XP on the machine. (See attached image).

[Bug 989770] [NEW] Refuses to load images where the file extension doesn't match the actual image type

2012-04-27 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

I was browsing the images in /usr/share/backgrounds. All show a
thumbnail in Nautilus.

However, using eog to dispay /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-
ubuntu.png gives an error message:

"Could not load image 'warty-final-ubuntu.png'. Fatal error reading PNG
image file: Not a PNG file"

Apparently this file is called *.png, but is actually a jpg.

I don't see any reason why eog can't display it anyway, since it's still
an image file, and it can see that by looking at its magic number.

[Bug 922553] Re: A nonresponsive application can cause Unity to freeze

Yes, this still happens, and in fact anyone can see part of it happening
by opening a drop-down menu in any program, and then trying to open the
dash: you can't. If a program hangs just as a menu is open, then you
just can't get to the dash until the program returns (if it ever does).

[Bug 978699] [NEW] After searching for a file, it is hard/impossible to find where it is located

2012-04-11 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

If you search for a file, you get a list of files that match the search,
but there is no right-click option 'open containing folder' for a file.
Worse yet, if you ask for the file's properties, the location field is

[Bug 978699] Re: After searching for a file, it is hard/impossible to find where it is located

2012-04-11 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 923823 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/923823

Well, why does one search for a file? I knew it was in there somewhere,
I knew approximately what it was called, and I wanted to find it. So I
used the Nautilus Go>Search for files (ctrl-F) functionality. But I also
wanted to know *where* it was stored, since I needed other files from
the same location. In the end I had to resort to the 'find' command in
the shell, but that shouldn't have to be necessary, Nautilus could
provide the information easily.

When you say "all is fine" do you mean they have added a method to go to
the enclosing directory, or that the field in the properties box is no
longer shortened? (Or both?)

[Bug 989507] [NEW] Updating 11.10 to 12.04 seems to hang, in fact interaction is needed in terminal

2012-04-27 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

While updating from 11.10 to 12.04, the update was taking a very long
time, and seemed to be hung while installing libc6.

The problem turned out to be in the terminal section of the update
window: it was waiting for input from me, it wanted to halt some servers
in order to update them. However from the main dialogue window it was
completely unclear that that was required. In fact the update needed my
interaction three times in the terminal before it could complete.

It should really be made explicit during the update that user
interaction is needed.

[Bug 989561] [NEW] Installing 12.04, boot record put on wrong disk

2012-04-27 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

I installed 12.04 on a machine where at the time of the install a USB
disk (that itself is bootable, though I was installing from a USB stick)
was plugged in. Installation went fine, except that the boot/grub bit
was put on the external disk rather than the disk I was installing to.
As a result, I can only boot now if the external disk is plugged in...

[Bug 1002193] [NEW] Samba4 not installing properly

2012-05-21 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

[Not sure if reporting this as a bug in update-manager is right; This
isn't a bug in Samba, but a bug apparently caused by Samba4when update-
manager runs]

Here is the output from update-manager when it runs. I have tried
uninstalling Samba4 and then re-installing; but it doesn't seem to help.

[Bug 984356] [NEW] Clicking symlink to a non-mounted disk gives misleading error message

2012-04-17 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

If you have a symlink to a disk that is not auto-mounted, then clicking
on it gives an error message like "The Link "My Pictures" is Broken.
Move it to the Rubbish Bin? This link cannot be used, because its target
"/media/Acer/Users/Steven/Pictures/My Pictures" doesn't exist."

For a beginner this message is startling, and suggesting that it should
be deleted worrying, and not particularly helpful.

The best option from a usability point of view would be to mount the
disk, but I bet that's hard to do.

Second best, do not offer to delete it, and say something along the
lines of "The file or directory that "My Pictures" links to
(/media/Acer/Users/Steven/Pictures/My Pictures) is not currently
available. You should check that the disk is mounted."

Be that as it may, it was only introduced by 12.04/Precise. Before that I
didn't have any problem; so something changed to break how it works. That
still counts as a bug to me.

[Bug 892473] [NEW] No icons in Nautilus after upgrade

2011-11-19 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 11.10, Nautilus had no icons, just generic sheets of
paper icons (see image).

I was upgrading from a system that used the Radiance theme. To repair
this problem, I had to reselect the radiance theme in System
Settings>Appearance, and reboot. (see result image)

[Bug 1043745] [NEW] "Document Print Status" freezes when trying to move a job to another printer, thereby freezing machine

2012-08-30 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

A job was not printing because the printer was out of paper, so I
decided to move it to another printer.

I opened the Document Print Status window, right clicked on the job,
selected Move To, and briefly the list of alternate printers showed,
then blanked, and then the whole dialogue froze. (This was repeatable.)

Unfortunately Ubuntu has a regrettable property that if an application
freezes when a menu is open, the whole system is unusable. A reboot is
the only way to get out (as far as I can tell), so this bug is
particularly irritating (though the underlying bug of the system
freezing is more irritating).

[Bug 1012588] [NEW] Ubuntu One losing files

2012-06-13 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

I have lost a file twice this week, so definitely needs reporting. This
is just reporting how I believe the second case arose.

I am working on files on two different machines. On one machine I edited
one file, and saved it. I can't say whether Ubuntu One synced it or not,
I didn't notice. I thought I had suspended the computer after that, but
when I returned to it this morning, it was still on.

After leaving the first machine last night, I travelled to the other
location, and started editing the same file there. I suspect that it was
still in the editor buffer, and I started editing it without reloading
(I know foolish, but people do this sort of foolish thing, and we should
make sure it still works sensibly). I saved it, and I believe that
Ubuntu One did sync it.

The next morning, when I returned to the first machine, that was still
on, the file was no longer on the machine. Ubuntu One had apparently
deleted it. I know for sure that last thing last night it was there,
becuase the output from an 'ls' is still visible in a terminal.

I am including status.log and syncdaemon.log from both machines.

[Bug 1012588] Re: Ubuntu One losing files

2012-06-30 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
It happened again.

I spent a long time yesterday working on file 1989-07.html on machine
one (as called above), and it synced OK.

Later I was on machine two, and only looked at the file to check it
looked OK.

This morning it got replaced on machine one by the old version of the
file.

Including syncdaemon.log from machine one with this message

[Bug 1014666] [NEW] "System settings>Printing" interface has problems

2012-06-18 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

If a printer has a problem (see first attachment) its icon has an alert
symbol on it.

It is very hard to locate what the problem is.

Firstly if you double click on the printer, nothing happens - I would
propose that the printer properties come up, as a solution to this.

Secondly, if you manually select Printer Properties (see attachment 2),
there is no indication that anything is wrong. In the attachment you can
see "Printer State: Idle -ready to print." as if nothing is wrong.

In fact I discovered purely by chance that the error messages are
reported under the tab "Ink/toner levels", even though they may have
nothing to do with ink and toner (as in this case). Worse yet, they are
displayed in a text area that is less than one line high (in my case
there were several messages, but scrolling doesn't work properly on a
text area that is so small).

My recommendations: 1) Make double click on a printer bring up its
properties. 2) Move the error messages to the initial tab, either merged
with the "Printer state" field, or directly below. 3) Make the space for
error messages larger, to accommodate at least one line, but preferably
more.

[Bug 1014666] Re: "System settings>Printing" interface has problems

2012-06-18 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Actually, an additional improvement would be to make the hover text for
the printer (currently "Printer") the error message text, so that in my
case just hovering over the printer icon would show "Printer out of
paper", making location of the problem trivial.

[Bug 1010016] [NEW] When switching with a KVM, display resolution is not detected at first

2012-06-07 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

I have two Ubuntu 12.04 machines attached to a 2048x1152 screen via a
KVM switch.

Each time I switch it comes up with the wrong resolution, *until* I
click on System Settings>Displays, when it suddenly and with no further
action on my behalf correctly identifies the display and sets the right
resolution. (It may only happen after Ubuntu has locked the screen after
a timeout)

As far as I recall, this is new for 12.04. 11.10 did it right, giving
the correct resolution on switching with no further action required.

[Bug 922550] [NEW] Papercut: when update-manager fails, the 'details' area is tiny, making it impossible to read

2012-01-27 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl

[Bug 922553] [NEW] A nonresponsive application can cause Unity to freeze

2012-01-27 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

I'm using an application that at times goes into a loop and becomes
unresponsive, so that Unity greys it out until it comes back.
When that happens, normally you can still run other programs from Unity, until
it comes back (or until you kill the rogue).

However, if at the moment the problem application freezes I have right
clicked to get a menu from the application, or some similar operation
that has caused a menu to appear, then Unity becomes nonresponsive as
well. Keyboard shortcuts, and clicks all fail to produce any result.

The application in my case is Opera (11.61, but it happened on earlier
versions too).

[Bug 920989] [NEW] Nautilus Papercut: can't use navigation buttons in 2 pane view

2012-01-24 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

When in two pane view, you have an active and a non-active pane. At the
top of each pane there are the breadcrumb navigation buttons, showing
the path to get to the current directory, and allowing you quick
navigation back in the tree.

You can only click on the breadcrumb buttons on the active pane; they
are deactivated on the non-active pane. This is a nuisance.

[Bug 1014666] Re: "System settings>Printing" interface has problems

2013-03-19 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
** Description changed:

3) Make the space for
error messages larger, to accommodate at least one line, but preferably
  more.

+ (Extra suggestion moved from later reply:) An additional improvement
+ would be to make the hover text for the printer (currently "Printer")
+ the error message text, so that in my case just hovering over the
+ printer icon would show "Printer out of paper", making location of the
+ problem trivial.

[Bug 1175230] [NEW] Split-screen (F3) missing in Nautilus since 13.04

2013-05-01 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

Since 13.04, the F3 key to split the screen in Nautilus doesn't work. I
understand this was removed because it didn't work with touch screens,
but I (and many others) do not use touch screens, and I miss the
functionality, which was quick and easy and useful.

Please restore it.

I confirm that it doesn't work in 13.04. The 'Displays' program does
seem to see the laptop screen, but seems unable to activate it.

[Bug 1169904] [NEW] "Save screenshot" dialog window has wrong focus

2013-04-17 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

When you take a screenshot with the Print Screen key, you get a dialog
asking you to name the file.

It *looks* like the focus is on the name of the file (selected in orange
like the File Rename dialog in Nautilus), but you can't type - I suspect
focus is really on the Save button.

Nor can you tab to the filename field, so you have to use your mouse to
select what is already visually selected in order to type a name.

Correct behaviour would be to let the user directly type to this dialog
box without any further action.

[Bug 1000140] [NEW] Ubuntu crash reported with a mini non-resizable window

2012-05-16 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

Since 12.04, when I get a report of a Ubuntu crash, I often get the
report in a window that is of the minimal size, and unresizable (see
screen dump, where I have had 4 crash reports), thus making it
impossible to read the report (or do anything else).

[Bug 731621] Re: It should be easier to find base information about passwords

2013-06-09 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
No, as it says at the top, I was talking about the package "ubuntu-
docs", the desktop help package delivered with Ubuntu. But this was two
years ago, so I was talking about Ubuntu 10.10.

Looking at the new desktop documentation, once you've worked out how to
search (which is not obvious) the documentation now tells you how to
change your passwords, so it looks like it has been fixed.

[Bug 782411] Re: Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed.

2011-11-04 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
I was having this problem too. I had installed CSS , I could see and
browse the DVD, but it wouldn't play.

I could play unencrypted VOBs, but not encrypted ones.

If I did a "Show properties" of an encrypted VOB, Nautilus would crash.

I eventaully traced the problem: no region set on the DVD drive. I was
getting the following messages on dmesg:

 [ 167.329314] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 02 a2 00 00 02 00
 [ 167.329332] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 2696
 [ 167.335004] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK
driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
 [ 167.335015] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[ 167.335024] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Media region code is mismatched
to logical unit region
 [ 167.335035] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 02 a2 00 00 02 00
 [ 167.335053] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 2696

Solution: install and use regionset.

Still, this should be fixed centrally: Nautilus shouldn't crash, the
message from mplayer should include the warning that a region code may
not be set.

[Bug 886203] [NEW] Misleading error message "Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed "

2011-11-04 Thread ste...@pemberton.nl
Public bug reported:

Although you get this message if CSS hasn't been installed, you also get it if
the DVD drive has no region code set.
The message could more usefully read:

installed, or the drive has no region code set.
