[Bug 366104] Re: [Jaunty] Install incorrectly reports no other OS on system
I've experimented with this a bit more, and discovered an unusual behaviour which may help track this down. It turns out my machine has two disks sdb1 and sdba. Looking at the image above, you'll see that though it says "This computer has no operating systems on it", in fact it means this *disk*. Below the radio button for "Use the entire disk" you'll see it has a drop down (I didn't notice this at first), that allows to select either of the two disks, and furthermore selected initially for sda (not sdb), even though sdb is displayed at the top of the window. If I select sdb on the dropdown, nothing happens, but if I then reselect sda, then the top part of the window switches to showing the partitions for sda, and furthermore identifying it as containing several operating systems. (See second image) So there seems to be several problems with this dialog box, especially from the viewpoint of a novice trying to install: 1. It doesn't make it clear that it has found several disks 2. It confuses "computer" with "disk" 3. It is not at all clear that selecting from the dropdown of a different control will change the display of the disk it is looking at 4. The initial display doesn't match the dropdown with the display. While I have your attention (maybe I should submit this as a separate bug; your call). From the inital display, still not realising it was talking about the second disk, I chose "install side by side" and let it do its thing, assuming it would do the right thing. You can see the result at the bottom part of the second image: it created a *tiny* partition for Ubuntu, 2.5G, so that when I booted to it, and updated all the software, the partition was 100% full, and I couldn't do anything more with it at all. I'm still not sure how to undo the situation, or increase the size of the partition, or remove Ubuntu so I can start again. A bit frustrating. What it did was ** Attachment added: "Install window after selecting sdb and then sda again. [Bug 978699] Re: After searching for a file, it is hard/impossible to find where it is located
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 923823 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/923823 Well, why does one search for a file? I knew it was in there somewhere, I knew approximately what it was called, and I wanted to find it. So I used the Nautilus Go>Search for files (ctrl-F) functionality. But I also wanted to know *where* it was stored, since I needed other files from the same location. In the end I had to resort to the 'find' command in the shell, but that shouldn't have to be necessary, Nautilus could provide the information easily. When you say "all is fine" do you mean they have added a method to go to the enclosing directory, or that the field in the properties box is no longer shortened? [Bug 984356] [NEW] Clicking symlink to a non-mounted disk gives misleading error message
Public bug reported: If you have a symlink to a disk that is not auto-mounted, then clicking on it gives an error message like "The Link "My Pictures" is Broken. Move it to the Rubbish Bin? [Bug 1043745] [NEW] "Document Print Status" freezes when trying to move a job to another printer, thereby freezing machine
Public bug reported: A job was not printing because the printer was out of paper, so I decided to move it to another printer. I opened the Document Print Status window, right clicked on the job, selected Move To, and briefly the list of alternate printers showed, then blanked, and then the whole dialogue froze. (This was repeatable.) Unfortunately Ubuntu has a regrettable property that if an application freezes when a menu is open, the whole system is unusable. After leaving the first machine last night, I travelled to the other location, and started editing the same file there. I suspect that it was still in the editor buffer, and I started editing it without reloading (I know foolish, but people do this sort of foolish thing, and we should make sure it still works sensibly). I saved it, and I believe that Ubuntu One did sync it. The next morning, when I returned to the first machine, that was still on, the file was no longer on the machine. Ubuntu One had apparently deleted it. I know for sure that last thing last night it was there, becuase the output from an 'ls' is still visible in a terminal. I am including status.log and syncdaemon.log from both machines. [Bug 1014666] [NEW] "System settings>Printing" interface has problems
Public bug reported: If a printer has a problem (see first attachment) its icon has an alert symbol on it. It is very hard to locate what the problem is. Firstly if you double click on the printer, nothing happens - I would propose that the printer properties come up, as a solution to this. Secondly, if you manually select Printer Properties (see attachment 2), there is no indication that anything is wrong. In the attachment you can see "Printer State: Idle -ready to print." as if nothing is wrong. In fact I discovered purely by chance that the error messages are reported under the tab "Ink/toner levels", even though they may have nothing to do with ink and toner (as in this case). Worse yet, they are displayed in a text area that is less than one line high (in my case there were several messages, but scrolling doesn't work properly on a text area that is so small). My recommendations: 1) Make double click on a printer bring up its properties. 2) Move the error messages to the initial tab, either merged with the "Printer state" field, or directly below. 3) Make the space for error messages larger, to accommodate at least one line, but preferably more. Public bug reported: I'm using an application that at times goes into a loop and becomes unresponsive, so that Unity greys it out until it comes back. When that happens, normally you can still run other programs from Unity, until it comes back (or until you kill the rogue). However, if at the moment the problem application freezes I have right clicked to get a menu from the application, or some similar operation that has caused a menu to appear, then Unity becomes nonresponsive as well. Keyboard shortcuts, and clicks all fail to produce any result. The application in my case is Opera (11.61, but it happened on earlier versions too). [Bug 920989] [NEW] Nautilus Papercut: can't use navigation buttons in 2 pane view
Public bug reported: When in two pane view, you have an active and a non-active pane. At the top of each pane there are the breadcrumb navigation buttons, showing the path to get to the current directory, and allowing you quick navigation back in the tree. You can only click on the breadcrumb buttons on the active pane; they are deactivated on the non-active pane. This is a nuisance. [Bug 1014666] Re: "System settings>Printing" interface has problems
** Description changed: If a printer has a problem (see first attachment) its icon has an alert symbol on it. + (Extra suggestion moved from later reply:) An additional improvement + would be to make the hover text for the printer (currently "Printer") + the error message text, so that in my case just hovering over the + printer icon would show "Printer out of paper", making location of the + problem trivial. + ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: system-config-printer-common 1.3.8+20120201-0ubuntu8.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-25.40-generic 3.2.18 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-25-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu8 Architecture: amd64 Date: Mon Jun 18 15:47:19 2012 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Release amd64 (20111012) MachineType: TOSHIBA PORTEGE Z835 PackageArchitecture: all Papersize: letter PpdFiles: - Coconut: Xerox WorkCentre 7345 Foomatic/Postscript - HP-Officejet-6500-E710n-z: HP Officejet 6500 e710n-z, hpcups 3.12.2 - Pear: Xerox WorkCentre 7345 Foomatic/Postscript + Coconut: Xerox WorkCentre 7345 Foomatic/Postscript + HP-Officejet-6500-E710n-z: HP Officejet 6500 e710n-z, hpcups 3.12.2 + Pear: Xerox WorkCentre 7345 Foomatic/Postscript ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-25-generic root=UUID=234865dc-97a3-4cf3-9932-254dd6cd6b11 ro quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: system-config-printer UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to precise on 2012-04-26 (52 days ago) dmi.bios.date: 10/19/2011 dmi.bios.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.bios.version: Version 1.30 dmi.board.asset.tag: 00 dmi.board.name: Portable PC dmi.board.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.board.version: Version A0 dmi.chassis.asset.tag: 00 dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.chassis.version: Version 1.0 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnTOSHIBA:bvrVersion1.30:bd10/19/2011:svnTOSHIBA:pnPORTEGEZ835:pvrPT224U-001001:rvnTOSHIBA:rnPortablePC:rvrVersionA0:cvnTOSHIBA:ct10:cvrVersion1.0: dmi.product.name: PORTEGE Z835 dmi.product.version: PT224U-001001 dmi.sys.vendor: TOSHIBA -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1014666 Title: "System settings>Printing" interface has problems To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-config-printer/+bug/1014666/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1169904] [NEW] "Save screenshot" dialog window has wrong focus
Public bug reported: When you take a screenshot with the Print Screen key, you get a dialog asking you to name the file. It *looks* like the focus is on the name of the file (selected in orange like the File Rename dialog in Nautilus), but you can't type - I suspect focus is really on the Save button. Nor can you tab to the filename field, so you have to use your mouse to select what is already visually selected in order to type a name. [Bug 731621] Re: It should be easier to find base information about passwords
No, as it says at the top, I was talking about the package "ubuntu- docs", the desktop help package delivered with Ubuntu. But this was two years ago, so I was talking about Ubuntu 10.10. Looking at the new desktop documentation, once you've worked out how to search (which is not obvious) the documentation now tells you how to change your passwords, so it looks like it has been fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/731621 Title: It should be easier to find base information about passwords To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs/+bug/731621/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 782411] Re: Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed.
I was having this problem too. I had installed CSS , I could see and browse the DVD, but it wouldn't play. I could play unencrypted VOBs, but not encrypted ones. If I did a "Show properties" of an encrypted VOB, Nautilus would crash. I eventaully traced the problem: no region set on the DVD drive. I was getting the following messages on dmesg: [ 167.329314] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 02 a2 00 00 02 00 [ 167.329332] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 2696 [ 167.335004] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE [ 167.335015] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current] [ 167.335024] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Still, this should be fixed centrally: Nautilus shouldn't crash, the message from mplayer should include the warning that a region code may not be set. ** Changed in: gstreamer0.10 (Ubuntu) Status: Expired => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/782411 Title: Could not read DVD.
