Public bug reported: While updating from 11.10 to 12.04, the update was taking a very long time, and seemed to be hung while installing libc6.
The problem turned out to be in the terminal section of the update window: it was waiting for input from me, it wanted to halt some servers in order to update them. However from the main dialogue window it was completely unclear that that was required. In fact the update needed my interaction three times in the terminal before it could complete. It should really be made explicit during the update that user interaction is needed.
