Thanks. This worked. Since I had already removed "network.protocol-handler.app.mailto", editing it back in with "thunderbird" as the value, then following on with the rest solved the problem. In the process I cleaned up many other "garbage" files in .mozilla that must be from multiple earlier upgrades and updates. Kubuntu 7.04 default kde with system settings: default email client mozilla-thunderbird and default web browser firefox. Interesting since previous versions showed correct behavior. It worked correctly last night by reinstalling gnome-panel and restarting. I am not near the machine now and will try killall this evening (Eastern time U.S.). A cold start showed a frozen clock on the panel. Restarting the panel with "killall gnome-panel" re-started the clock on the panel. As others my configuration files were completely wiped out in the amd64 version. Also symlink is created each time Thunderbird is started: .mozilla-thunderbird -> /home/user/.thunderbird A .thunderbird.upstream sub-directory never appeared in the home directory. This is quite bad form, even if it is a beta, since recovery seems almost impossible.
