Thanks. This worked. Since I had already removed "network.protocol-handler.app.mailto", editing it back in with "thunderbird" as the value, then following on with the rest solved the problem. In the process I cleaned up many other "garbage" files in .mozilla that must be from multiple earlier upgrades and updates.
