[Bug 319494] Re: Multiple Listings for Same Album

2009-06-18 Thread Robin
I suspect that it is sorting by album AND ARTIST as seen in my attached pic.
It shows 3 groups of the same album name.
The differentiating factor seems to be the artists for each group.

But really it should be just 1 group.

being downloaded, prior to testing tomorrow. This note is to keep the
bug live, which is more than the NIC currently is! (This is written on a

[Bug 384891] [NEW] Contact list freezes making you think you are online, but not

2009-06-08 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete

1) Kubuntu 9.04
2) kopete 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu2
3a) Give updated contact list and remain online
3b) OR hide all contact list and show that im offline
4) Contact list 'freezes' showing outdated contacts after an unknown amount of
time. So contacts that have been long gone and offline will remain shown during
this 'freeze'. Furthermore, during this freeze, you are actually offline.

This problem seems to occur only on MSN.

Bug is filed here as well https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=190828

[Bug 110375] Re: Bluetooth no longer working after upgrade to Feisty

2007-08-05 Thread robin
At one point, for no reason at all, the phone stops detecting my laptop.
The laptop can detect the phone and send files, but the phone CANNOT
detect the laptop.

Do: hciconfig -a
Look for "UP RUNNING" at the 3rd line
It shows exactly that on my feisty.

Do: sudo hciconfig hci0 piscan
Then it shows "UP RUNNING PSCAN ISCAN" and that's when the phone can see the
computer again.

Hope it's relevant.

[Bug 120483] Re: nfsboot ubuntu desktop fails with errors creating /dev/null

2007-06-14 Thread Robin
I'm having the same trouble except that I don't see the /dev/null error,
although it may flash by too fast for me to read. I get a slew of
complaints about sed before the system hangs.

I added "single" to the boot options of my nfs bootup, and successfully
got to a root prompt. The only problem I had during the boot (that I
could catch) was a timeout trying to mount my samba share. From there I
could do pretty much anything that I wanted. The network was up, I had
internet access, I could nfs share other file systems, I could start X
and get a full desktop etc.

Once I verifiied everything was looking good, I went back to the root
prompt and entered "telinit 2". From there it was all bad. Avahi timed
out, so I removed that from the startup and tried again, and next the
"network manager" (i think it was called) failed after that. Once that
happened I got a flash of messages, and the last screen was full of
startup script failures complaining they couldn't find "sed" (it's in
/bin and does exist on the system). Since the system hangs at that point
I can only guess what went wrong. I assume something is blowing away my
root file system.

Next I'll start manually running the rc2.d scripts and see if I can

[Bug 111227] Re: NFS-root support indirectly broken in Feisty

2007-06-15 Thread Robin
I found the "Deactivating device %s" and "Will activate wired
connection..." messages in binary /usr/sbin/NetworkManager, so it
doesn't look like there's an easy way to get around this other than
patching NetworkManager.

[Bug 120483] Re: nfsboot ubuntu desktop fails with errors creating /dev/null

2007-06-15 Thread Robin
It's NetworkManager, and it's binary /usr/sbin/NetworkManager, not a
script, so it will be hard to patch. I get:

NetworkManager: Deactivating device eht0
NetworkManager: Will activate wired connection eht0 because it
now has a link

[Bug 211392] [NEW] Could not initialise the package information

2008-04-03 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package
information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include
the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_gutsy_universe_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package
lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

I have tried the following but it made no difference:

$ sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin
$ sudo apt-get update
or:
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo apt-get update

Do you want the results of /var/lib/dpkg/status. It is very large?

There is nothing in
 /var/log/dist-upgrade/

[Bug 194919] [NEW] libopenal needs replacement

2008-03-07 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libopenal0

libopenal needs replacement

Applications using this old OpenAL implementation (all versions) makes horrible
sound output errors and should be replaced
with the new implementation of OpenAL, OpenAL Soft, which can be found at
http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html

With OpenAL Soft I get the most crystal clear sound I have ever heard in
any 3d game with Ubuntu.

[Bug 44100] Re: openoffice.org in feisty lacks canadian english spellcheck

2007-06-01 Thread Robin
I followed bobonov's advice and it worked for me. I installed myspell-ca
(Canadian). At the end of the configure it said it updated the
dictionary list, so I didn't need to run the perl script he mentioned.

This is too complicated though. OpenOffice should be redesigned to do
this:

1) When you start openoffice the first time with a language selected that
doesn't have a spell check package installed, should warn you and give you an
opportunity to download the corresponding package.
2) If you decide not to download the package, disable the spellcheck buttons so
that it's obvious that they don't work.
3) Give the user an easy way to download the required package later if he wants
to.

Instead it simply enables all spellcheck functions and tells you that
all spellchecking is complete without actually doing anything. This
could very easily lead the the user assuming his document is error free
until he catches on to what's going on. Once he does catch on, he has to
wade through howtos and bug reports until he finds something that works
for them. Very frustrating for something so simple.

It's easy for me to sit on the sidelines and complain. OpenOffice is
coming along nicely, but these types of obvious things need to be
addressed for it to become widely accepted. I just wish I had the time
to help out.

would really like to know it there has been a fix for this. Also,

Jean-Baptiste,

Attached are two files. 1) /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd
2) results of "sudo grep audit/( /var/log/kern.log" piped to file
bug_532053. The first was last modified 6/18/2009.

Thank you for your help.

2010-03-05 Thread Robin
I can't see why changing ownership should be a problem for Update Manager.
Update Manager runs as root and I can change
' /etc/cups/printers.conf' as root. I am curious about one line in this .conf
file. The line 'AuthInfoRequired username, password' is commented out and I
don't remember why. It's not like me to make a change in a file and not
provide a comment and it would have been done some time ago under Hardy Heron.

Jean-Baptiste,

Yes, I'll do so tomorrow. I've had several glasses of a very fine but
everyday wine and alcohol and software engineering don't mix.

Thank you for your kind attention to this issue and have a great

[Bug 462828] Re: Files are marked for deletion on server when syncdaemon is killed during sync

2009-10-29 Thread Robin
I can confirm that the 1.0.2-0ubuntu2 gnome client, sourced from
proposed, appears to work on 9.10rc 64 bit fully updated. Strangely,
earlier clients never seemed to work consistently on 64 bit Ubuntu
(Jaunty or Karmic). No problems so far, but not really smoke tested it
yet!

[Bug 1826290] Re: geoclue mozilla location api key rate limited

2020-11-26 Thread Robin
Can confirm that this stopped working 2 days ago. But when called
manually from a script:

Can someone clarify: Is the shared "geoclue" key likely to come to life
again, and if so is there any timeline?

[Bug 1100092] Re: Try to use a tempdir on same partition as source files

2020-12-13 Thread Robin
The temporary directory needs to be user settable. One size fits all is
not working. Déjà-dup runs, and if the desktop is open at the time, a
brief message is displayed. There may also be a desktop notification to
be seen, but both of these are easily missed. There is no log file
associated with the Déjà-dup control GUI. The control GUI does not note
that any backups have failed. Effectively, backups fail silently.

Should a new bug be raised for this silent failure?

[Bug 1798561] [NEW] sslscan fails to detect most ciphers

2018-10-18 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

The version of sslscan that's been packaged uses the system version of
OpenSSL, which has removed support for most of the weak and legacy SSL
ciphers. This means that it will fail to detect:

* RC4 ciphers
* Anonymous ciphers
* Null ciphers
* Most weak CBC ciphers
* Weak DHE keys
* Probably others
* SSLv3
* SSLv2

This means that it's giving extremely misleading results, and the
impression that the scanned systems are secure, even if they have all
the weak ciphers and protocols enabled.

sslscan has had an option for a number of years to be statically
compiled against a version of OpenSSL that includes support for all
these, allowing it to detect them (with `make static`), so with the
current state of OpenSSL in Ubuntu, the statically build version needs
to be packaged instead.

If packaging the static build isn't possible (I'm not sure what Ubuntu's
policies are on this), then sslscan should be removed from the
repository, because it's giving totally false information at the moment.

[Bug 1829621] [NEW] No sound after suspend

2019-05-18 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

On my Laptop sound is working only after a fresh reboot. Every time I
suspend the laptop, I can no longer use the internal speakers or any
headphones. I tried a lot of solutions suggested online none of them
working for me. Since this problem is very annoying I would really
appreciate if a fix would be available.

Thanks a lot :)

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-20 Thread Robin
@vanvugt Thank you for your answer.
I tried the kernel versions 5.0.0-13 and 4.3.0-04 as well. For the first one,
the same problem occured (sound only after a fresh boot) and the second one
couldn't be installed correctly because of missing libraries (a boot was
possible, but e.g. the mouse pointer was not moving).
I have already tried to reconfigure pulseaudio, to force alsa-audio to reload
(it does reload but doesn't change anything).

Here is my output of aplay:
$ aplay -L

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Robin
I was now able to try a few different versions leading to the following results:
* The bug does not affect kernel version 4.18.0-15 (Tested using a Live install
of 18.04.2)
* The bug does not affect kernel version 4.20.17-042017 (Tested on my install
of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does not affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug does affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

So the bug must be introduced between 4.20.17 and 5.0.0-15.
I hope this can be a good starting point for troubleshooting.

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend

2019-05-26 Thread Robin
Indeed my conclusion was wrong because I mixed up the versions. The bug
does affect some newer versions although it seems that it was solved in
the meantime before reappearing again.

To correct, I observed the following:

* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 4.18.0-15 (Tested using a Live install
of 18.04.2)
* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 4.20.17-042017 (Tested on my install
of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-13 (Tested on my install of 19.04
with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-15 (I used this version when I filed
the bug report some days after I installed Ubuntu on my laptop)
* The bug DOES affect kernel version 5.0.0-16 (Tested on my install of 19.04
with an update from disco-proposed using apt-get)
* The bug does NOT affect kernel version 5.0.1-050001 (Tested on my install of
19.04 with a manually installed kernel)
* The bug DOES affect newly build kernel version 5.1.5-050105 (Tested on my
install of 19.04 with a manually installed kernel)

I conclude, that the bug was introduced between 4.20.17 and 5.0.0-13, then
solved between 5.0.0-16 and 5.0.1 only to be reintroduced in the most recent
build (5.1.5).
As you might notice, I am only a user, so I have limited skills. The change
might also come from something else but I did not purposely change any setting
or behavior while I tried the different versions. I tested the sound using the
button in the sound-settings of Ubuntu and Spotify (both after a fresh boot and
after suspend).

[Bug 1829621] Re: [HP Laptop 14-ma0xxx] No sound after suspend (kernels 5.0.0 and 5.1.5 faulty, but not 5.0.1)

2019-05-28 Thread Robin
Thanks for your comments

@Hui Wang: The additional line worked. Following your steps the bug could no
longer be reproduced with kernel 5.1.5-050105. Thanks a lot. Would it be
suitable to apply these changes as default or to propose them commented out in
the config file?
@Kai-Heng Feng: Your kernel worked, too. I tested it with the additional line
and without: The bug could not be reproduced in both cases.

[Bug 132002] Re: libportaudio packaging very confusing

2019-01-02 Thread Robin
As suggested in #3 above, this solution may work:

The clean solution to this issue is to install libjack-jackd2-dev
*before* installing portaudio19-dev.

I have a note on this, available on request.

[Bug 1910401] Re: nvidia-kernel-source-440-server 440.95.01-0ubuntu0.20.04.1: nvidia kernel module failed to build

2021-01-08 Thread Robin
https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/linux-kernel-5-8-0-rc-3-1-breaks-
nvidia-driver/140602

appears relevant. This claims to be fixed in the 450.57 driver release

https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/162107/en-us

Attempting to switch to nvidia-driver-450-server via "Software &
Updates" > "Additional Drivers" (for me) reported unmet dependencies for
llvm10. Despite this, the driver change still appeared to run. It
never declared completion, but having waited until nothing further
appeared to be happening and rebooted, "Additional Drivers" reports that
I am using the 450 driver, and this appears to have addressed the
obvious symptoms.

[Bug 1886161] Re: Unattended upgrades should work on roaming laptops

2021-02-04 Thread Robin
Just an update, for what it's worth.

I solved this problem with a shell script triggered by Network Manager's
"up" hook. Because UU does not update the package list, I had to resort
to a `apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade` with
`DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive` and a whole bunch of options to make
sure everything runs reliably in the background. Convoluted and
laborious.

But now my Ubuntu is *always* up to date. Before, it regularly went
*months* without a security update.

Putting aside whose fault it is, this absolutely IS a problem.

[Bug 1826290] Re: geoclue mozilla location api key rate limited

2021-02-02 Thread Robin
@Sebastien Bacher Just doing an occasional Python GET request to the
same URL others are using:
https://location.services.mozilla.com/v1/geolocate?key=geoclue

Alternatively, calling that URL in a browser. It works occasionally, but
mostly it just returns a 403. The JSON string:
{"error":{"errors":[{"domain":"usageLimits","reason":"dailyLimitExceeded","message":"You
have exceeded your daily limit."}],"code":403,"message":"You have
exceeded your daily limit."}}

[Bug 1886161] [NEW] UU is almost useless on itinerant laptops

2020-07-03 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

For many if not most laptop computers, Unattended Upgrades seems all but
useless by design.

For upgrades to happen, with default config, 3 conditions must be met:

- an internet connection must be up and running when the timer or cron or
anacron tries the unattended upgrade
- the connection must not be metered, whatever that means
(Skip-Updates-On-Metered-Connections "true")
- the computer must be plugged in (OnlyOnACPower "true")

These are insurmountable problems for many laptops on the go.
Inevitably, security upgrades will almost never run unattended on such
computers. I discovered with shock that Unattended Upgrades had almost
never run on my laptop. I tried all possible config tweaks. Nothing
worked reliably and in the end I gave up and wrote a upgrade script
which uses Network Manager's connection-up hook. Unattended Upgrades
needs to do something like this out of the box. Users should not need to
write scripts to ensure security upgrades.

Unattended upgrades is an excellent project for servers. But it really
needs to work, out of the box, on laptops too.

[Bug 1882112] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2020-06-04 Thread Robin
Public bug reported:

This may be correlated to the move to Bionic Beaver(?) LTS, now 18.04.4.
It may also be correlated to getting low on disk space on my system
drive (50GB SSD) and putting pressure on swap space. e.g when system HDD
<= 1GB. My secondary HDD is a 1TB USB spinning device that sometimes
seems to go into sleep mode and then fails to rapidly respond to IO
request or may be is in a 'hot IO' state. On my Bus I have a low
capacity HDD that is essentially unused because it rarely comes ready
when I boot. If it is partially alive it is conceivable that it might
be chattering and so competing for IO interrupt handling bandwidth?

The problem only occurs when I have selected the desktop management tile
from the 'side tray' and if I then shuffle or better align the windows
inside one of the four desktops so as to stop them running into the
neighbouring desktop area. Particularly, it seems to me, when at least
one of the desktops is quite busy with windows open in it and the
overlapped desktop has a few also. The fewer windows in total across
the desktops the less likely it seems that rearranging a few will have
any bad effect.

When the freeze occurs then 60%(?) of the time it ends in a 'big red
switch' reboot. The cursor stays active but ineffective. Keyboard
combinations, like Alt+W, will sometimes succeed in bringing up to full
screen mode and active the desktop that was in focus and constitutes a
recovery. Other times, and keys, will delete focussed windows in the
focussed desktop, and Tab will move focus around the 4 desktops.
SHIFT+Print Screen also executes but just takes the whole screen and
dumps it somewhere I haven't yet located... with sound effect.

Hope this helps... I am not at fully at home with Ubuntu/Linux yet... having
spent a lifetime on glasshouse legacy IBM mainframe field systems engineering.
I am making myself more system disk space meanwhile, and while extract my old
Maxtor. It would be nice if I didn't have to up my system disk to hundreds of
GB!
best regards,
Rob

[Bug 1882112] Re: [radeon] Screen freeze

2020-06-09 Thread Robin
The system 'hung' on me again. Active cursor etc. but I didn't explore
for fear of changing any status data.. just hit the button and rebooted
after attempting PrtScrn [but can't find where that image got written].
Ran journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt which is attached here.

I was in the 4-way split desktop. Only 1 was active this time. It had
2 windows open in it. 1 was overlapping its desktop area (top-left)
into the next below it. As i dragged that window down into the bottom
left desktop area the system froze.

No contention for resources apparent this time.

[Bug 1882112] Re: [radeon] Screen freeze

2020-06-12 Thread Robin
UPDATE: 11h41GMT Fri 12 Jun 2020 Rob Jarvis: Freeze occured again today,
second time since original report. This time I was able to Alt+F2 and switch
into the desktop in focus in the 4-part desktop 'palette' view. This killed
the freeze. The freeze seems to be associated with 2 factors which may be
related, or not:

1) a having desktop with windows which overlap out of the visible area.
When swithcing into dektop palette mode the previously out of sight bits
of the windows in the one desktop then show as overlapping into the
adjacent desktops in the palette view (clearly all 4 are mapped into the
same large pixel space).

If I try to tidy up the overlaps in the palette view I am likely to hit
a freeze. If I return to the single desktop and tidy up the windows by
reducing their size and ensure all fit into the active desktop, then
return to the palette view, I can then shuffle the smaller windows from
one desktop to another without hitting a freeze, unless...

2)... I drag a window diagonally, say from Top-left to bottom right, so that
the subject window traverses more than 2 desktop areas. Then I am more leikely
to see the freeze... it seems. If I drag a desktop completely from that top
left to top right and then wholly from there to bottom right it seems to stay
well behaved and doesn't freeze.. so far.

Bug confirmed for another Inspiron 13-5368.

Under kernel 4.15.0-99 & Ubuntu 18.04.4 & Gnome desktop, there is no
sound from internal speaker or on headphone jack, and also no microphone
input signal. Other outputs (HDMI & BlueTooth) still work

Previous kernel (4.15.0-96) works as expected.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2020-07-10 Thread Robin
Egregious violation of the XDG specification, almost a thousand users
actively complaining, years of stalling, and still Snap managers are
explicitly saying that this bug is not a priority. You have to ask what
they think IS important, or whether they care about their users at all.
@zyga seems well-meaning, but still, the fact that this is difficult to
fix is on Snap, no one else. It is the predictable result of a terrible
design decision made by Snap early on. Time to quit stalling and call
this bug a priority at last. Until it is fixed I have to purge Snap, no
choice, like so many others here. What a silly situation.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2020-07-10 Thread Robin
@niemeyer Your tone suggests that you do not understand why this
seemingly small issue is so important to many people. It is NOT just
esthetics, or rigid ideology. Others have mentioned issues with mounts
and disk space. Or imagine having a script which follows the XDG spec,
for backing up or syncing one's personal data or something similar. When
Snap, which is now built into Ubuntu, comes out of nowhere and dumps
large quantities of data, that will certainly require rewriting the
script and may even have cost money if you were on a metered connection.
This is wny, yes, I literally preferred purging Snap and resorting to
jiggery-pokery by pinning a Debian APT repo just to get Chromium. So my
comment was really in response to a remark by @stolowski that "our hands
are full with other features, and of higher priority". Tell us at least,
are there any other bugs that have as many users whining as this one?
Perhaps the actual users should have a little more say in deciding
priority.

2020-07-16 Thread Robin
@avamander If you read carefully the discussion above you will see that
the "resistance" has crumbled, this now seems to be a priority bug which
will be fixed fairly soon. The Snap team made a bad design mistake which
is harder to fix than it looks, see posts by @zyga for detail. Nobody
"wants to piss off" anyone, that is silly. Most of us here are not
paying customers, perhaps it would be good that we remember that.

[Bug 1886161] Re: UU should work on roaming laptops

2020-07-22 Thread Robin
@rbalint As I detailed, the problems cannot *all* be resolved by config.
The biggest one, the first above, is still there. If you turn on a
laptop when (1) an update is overdue and (2) there is not yet an
internet connection, then the update will not run even if the connection
becomes available 5 minutes later. This is an **absolutely typical**
situation when on the go and connecting to new wifi networks.

Perhaps this is anacron's fault, or systemd's or something, I am not
sure. What is certain is that, in the real world, in this common
situation, unattended upgrades does not upgrade Ubuntu unattended.

I believe that is a significant problem.
