[Bug 1040557] Re: UEFI boot live-usb bricks SAMSUNG 530U3C, np700z5c laptop

2012-12-22 Thread montini
Is there any information if it is safe to start 12.10 live USB flash in mode
"UEFI and CMS" (mixed bootloader) on NP530U3C-A05EE? Or only the plain CMS is
safe at the moment? I.e. is it only possible to dual boot ubuntu and win8 by
switching boot mode in the BIOS settings or "UEFI and CMS" method is safe
aswell?
Bought this machine a few days ago and accidentally ran into this bug page
(thank god though) - would've thought twice if I knew such issues are even
possible :/
Typing from Win8 but I miss my ubuntu already.
BTW, I managed to run 12.10 liveUSB in plain "CMS" mode with no fatal
consequences - but still was afraid to install it yet.

[Bug 1040557] Re: UEFI boot live-usb bricks SAMSUNG 530U3C, np700z5c laptop

2012-12-23 Thread montini
what are the actual benefits of booting UEFI way? Is it faster booting
or what? Maybe the instant-on feature I now expirience on Win8?

So let me get this straigt - the safe way to install would be:
1. Boot win8 in UEFI mode and shrink the disk leaving space for ubuntu
2. Reboot, set the machine to CMS mode;
3. boot the machine from liveUSB x64 12.10
4. select install, and partition drives like I used to - separate "/", "home"
and swap partitions (by the way - is it possible to install "/" into SSD part
of the disk - how does that affect win8 - does it use it?)
5. after successful installation - sudo apt-get update and upgrade
6. reboot, set the machine into "UEFI and CMS" mode? (what did you mean by
"Once you have Ubuntu installed in CMS mode, it will be safe to dual boot")
Because now when I set "CMS mode" - the win8 is not found/ does not bootup. Or
will grub2 loader somehow find the win8 and put it into grub menu, and I am
doomed to always boot in "CMS" mode as any atempt to switch BIOS to UEFI would
result in a brick?

By the way - I have upgraded the firmware BIOS to P05ABH (BIOS version
and MICOM version). Is it reported to have the same bug, no patch yet?

2012-12-26 Thread montini
Was that 12.10 x86 or x64? And why wouldn't you install "/" partition
onto SSD? Why does that sound strange to you - just curious? So this is
Win7 - it doesn't require UEFI as far as I understand? Did you leave
"recovery" partitions intact for future use? Which ones?

[Bug 928719] Re: Bring back Intellihide for unity as an option

2012-02-20 Thread montini
I should also add - the only possible option now stays "Autohide" (for
those who really need "window dodge", the option "Always show" is not an
option at all). Which means when I am working only with one (right)
hand, to be able to work quickly, I cannot - as I should use the left
hand to reveal the launcher by clicking the "Super" key. Earlier, when I
just needed to access dash to search for some app or smth, I always had
a chance to leftmouseclick the dash icon right away - and now I need
either two hands or one additional action to do - to move the mouse
pointer hitting the screen edge (which is also a bit of a lottery at
current stage - it's improving, but still), so now it takes more time to
achieve the goal. I am not even talking about the elegance of the
"window dodge" effect.

Sometimes I think that maybe the argument about new users not being able
to understand "where did the launcher go" after maximizing the window is
all about the compiz "Sticky windows" effect being turned on by default.
For me, the first thing I do after reinstalling, I install the CCSM, and
turn on the "Wobbly windows" effect. The "Sticky windows" conflicts with
that, so it's being switched off, though I don't see any problem with
that - I always use the "Shift" key to stick the window to some object
on the screen. So when you use the "Wobbly windows" when maximizing
window, you just can't really miss what is going on, and where the
launcher goes. So I think this might be the solution for some. Actually
I don't imagine ubuntu without "wobbly windows" - are you going to
restrict THAT as well??

[Bug 864256] [NEW] pc fails to suspend/shutdown after dual monitors were used

Public bug reported:

After the external monitor is used, closing laptop lid causes the
constant blinking of the "Sleep" LED (Thinkpad R61) but the laptop fails

produce such behaviour. The system is oneiric ocelot (but the behaviour
was the same on natty).

[Bug 640100] Re: Maverick fails to wake up on Samsung N150

2011-01-05 Thread montini
After applying the workaround "intel_idle.max_cstate=0" I have come into
some issue when after resuming from suspend (that part seems to be
working fine now) the backlighting of my n220 is jumping up and down for
some time (with the respective indicator applet visualizations, and no
chance to stop it by using keyboard Fn-Up/Fn-Down). This occurs kind of
randomly, and goes away after some time - sometimes it can be solved by
closing the lid and opening again - i.e. by additional suspend/resume
cycle. Is anyone else having this also?

I have read in other bug reports that mplayer will work if you change (no Xv).
This also did not work for me. The video players open and when I select the
file, or DVD to play, they close.

Will there be a fix for this in Gutsy? or should I upgrade to Hardy or
downgrade to Feisty?

Is there more information that I can provide to help correct the
problem? Other bug reports state it is the XAA and XEA (or something
like that) in the video packages for gutsy.
