[Bug 1564664] Re: Peripheral Devices (keyboard and mause) login delay

2016-03-31 Thread gravy45
Suggest looking in /var/log/syslog and/or running "Boot Chart", plus the
usual troubleshooting steps of removing peripherals and adding them one
by one to eliminate possibilities or narrow things down. There are also
the Ask Ubuntu and Ubuntu MATE forums which while not support forums per
se can assist in troubleshooting.

[Bug 1468337] Re: OpenCPN opens for little moment in Ubuntu Mate 15.04, then closes immidiately

2015-06-25 Thread gravy45
Open CPN comes in an untrusted PPA so you probably need to report it to
them or investigate via their forums. That said, the PI is a popular
topic for Ubuntu MATE. Have you tried running the program from the
command line, that should give you a message or messages about what is
going on and/or where it is failing. It's just that this bug area isn't
designed to be a support forum per se.

Tested with the Ubuntu MATE 15.10 daily ISO for August 29th, and it
doesn't appear fixed, or at least it shows a shutdown job with
"unlimited". I waited a couple of minutes then just closed the VB

did it shut down really quickly?

[Bug 1477730] Re: mate-tweak fails to launch with Numix theme

2015-07-29 Thread gravy45
I have been able to "fix" it by adding the called for icon. The correct
fix could be for the Numix maintainers to add this icon. Especially if
there is supposed to be a standard followed as to icon naming, so that
the theme works properly with MATE flavors proper. On the other hand,
the python script stops when it doesn't find that icon, so the case
could be made for handling that gracefully. This is the second similar
bug, see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate/+bug/1478988

[Bug 1359689] Re: cryptsetup password prompt not shown

2015-05-14 Thread gravy45
Those of you on 15.04 (and possibly earlier), can try to adjust
/etc/default/grub to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
# GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text

Then at the terminal:
sudo update-grub
..and reboot...

If it works you will get a simple text-based entry of the passphrase.

[Bug 1442265] [NEW] caja crashed with signal 7 in FcCompare()

2015-04-09 Thread gravy45

caja crashing.

I did have to turn off the nested paging option in Virtualbox 4.3.22 in
order to be able to boot properly with this VB guest.

[Bug 349988] Re: Hangs for 10 seconds when starting an admin app.

2015-03-20 Thread gravy45
I can confirm this on Ubuntu MATE 14.04 with gparted like the user
reported, and add to that that sometimes the freeze takes over the whole
desktop . It freezes more like 20-25 seconds.

This is additional behavior:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gksu/+bug/1433854

Summary: gksudo commands can take up to about 15 seconds to complete.
While waiting, no other desktop actions can occur, and the screen does
not update until control is returned to the terminal.

It shares a little with this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/253504
But I'm not creating a launcher.

In the below output, the "Yeah, we're in..." is the last message before
everything freezes. Then there is the approximate 15 second delay, the
screen comes back and the last three lines of the output show.

rmadcow@msnbc:~$ gksudo --debug caja

[Bug 1433854] Re: MATE 14.04: gksudo freezes and is slow

2015-03-23 Thread gravy45
This also occurs when right-clicking a folder to "Open as
Administrator", from caja 1.8.2. For this reason I have added "caja" as
an affected package.

The problem is shown to occur from the command line whenever I see the
file gksu.lock. If I run "gksudo --disable-grab caja" then that file is
not created, and of course, there is no 15-20 second delay as there is
when right-clicking a folder to "Open as Administrator".

[Bug 1386005] Re: Password not accepted graphical boot for encrypted root system

2015-03-26 Thread gravy45
I don't know if this is considered recovery mode but going this route allowed
me to workaround it (am running Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Beta 2 in a Virtualbox
guest), but of course no longer have a graphical boot..:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2251116&p=13158092#post13158092

Martin Wimpress lists what I did as a solution to Virtualbox Guests showing up
as 640x480 resolution.

[Bug 1433396] Re: MATE 14.04: Window Snapping "freezes" with red background

2015-03-26 Thread gravy45
All this from the original post - no longer see the green background
appear to indicate window snapping in 15.04 MATE Beta 2. Which I think
it is good because it is much cleaner looking and acting.

"So far I have not noticed this in the same way with Ubuntu Mate 15.04
Beta 1 in the latest version of Virtualbox, and cannot reproduce it with
the steps above. When grabbing a window to "snap maximize" it looks like
it first renders it unmaximized, then you see the green background, and
when you release the button after the "snap maximize" the green
background goes away and the window is maximized. As you would expect.

However, I was playing around with the terminal window in UM15.04-B1. 3
successive clicks in the title bar to maximize/unmaximize, and the green
background for window snapping freezes. When my mouse is moved over top
of the minimized program icons/rectangles in a bottom tray, the green
background goes away. Moving the mouse into the top panel accomplishes
this, as well as moving it to a bottom panel and returning the mouse to
over the terminal. See attached screenshot."

[Bug 1437362] [NEW] Tripled boot times - Virtualbox

2015-03-27 Thread gravy45
Public bug reported:

1) Release=Ubuntu Vivid Vervet (development branch), 15.04 (MATE Beta 2).
Running in Virtualbox guest 4.3.26, Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 host.
2) Package=systemd 219-4ubuntu10
3) Boot time to get to user login screen was 30 seconds with Ubuntu MATE 15.04
Alpha and Beta 1 (systemd=219-4ubuntu5). I expected that boot time would not
deviate much with Beta 2.
4) Boot time to get to user login screen is 1 minute 30 seconds at a minimum
with Ubuntu MATE 15.04 Beta 2 (systemd=219-4ubuntu10).

See the attached screenshots showing boot messages. Boot proceeds slowly
starting at or after:
Started LSB: Start NTP daemon
ntp.service
[**] (x of x) A start job is running for

This area of the boot, if you will, takes well over a minute to
complete.

released what yesterday, and it doesn't appear to be cleaning up after

[Bug 349988] Re: Hangs for 10 seconds when starting an admin app.

2015-03-29 Thread gravy45
@Sebastien Bacher, I'm sure that if I were in your shoes, I would be
saying many of the same things. It is clearly not showing up as a major
issue on https://errors.ubuntu.com. Then again, I'm not sure that
opening a program as administrator is all that common for most users, so
one would expect occurrence to be low. For those running applications
as administrator relatively often, it may not be low.

As @Troull.. points out, the issue has been around for quite a while,
the difference is "back then" it didn't occur as often. By back then
I'm referring to Ubuntu 11.04 and 12.04. Now with Ubuntu MATE 14.04 it
happens to me almost all the time. Maybe it can be given somewhat
greater importance based on that (since you asked about config-specific)
and the additional information I provide below?

What I'm throwing out there is the question: Is this caused by the
presence of the .gksu.lock file? And the other question is: Why would
that lock file be retained if the (offending) administratively-run
program has been closed? Shouldn't that lock file be removed at that
moment?

Additional info: the problem seems to begin after there has been a
.gksu.lock file created from a previous "Open as Administrator".If
there is no .gksu.lock file then at the first "Open as Administrator"
the issue does not occur. But when attempting a second "Open as
Administrator" and the .gksu.lock is still present from the first, then
the delay occurs.

[Bug 1001902] Re: xdg-open is not mate compatible

2015-05-01 Thread gravy45
This is the patch I put together for Ubuntu MATE 15.04, xdg-open, and it
seems to take care of the issue as stated in the title. Am unsure where
else xdg-open is used but it has been tested with Virtualbox and
Transmission. Would like advice on how to test it more properly to
determine if it can be proposed as a solution.

I see yours and other problems with Conky reported at the Ubuntu package
level, but you will likely need to report it to the developers of these
themes.

If you will post all of the steps to install conky and lua rings (there
seem to be a lot of conky themes and my mind reading is terrible), I can
try to duplicate.

[Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2015-09-30 Thread gravy45
Related to the proposed workaround, I've been using Ubuntu MATE since
April-2015 and already ran into this issue after the few "apt-get dist-
upgrade". It seems to me that 100 Mb for /boot partition under
automatic partitioning needs to be expanded. Is that a new bug/feature
request?

I agree that the way to fix this is not to implement the workaround but
rather to produce a more helpful error, but if the size of the partition
is artificially low, it should be bumped up.

[Bug 1429170] Re: man eom has wierd spacing with certain terminal sizes

2015-09-06 Thread gravy45
It is best to report it upstream, at the link mentioned in the manpage, if you
haven't already:
https://github.com/mate-desktop/eom/issues

The issue is just how the eom man page is formatted. Plus there you
could always issue a pull request and supply a corrected
/usr/share/man/man1/eom.1.gz

See attachment example.

I see this as well, but after looking at your
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate/+bug/1406344
now I am of the mind that not seeing the green/red tile preview background
(with compositing off) looks better.

I know where the window is going by how I positioned the mouse.

If it actually showed the window in place as a real preview before I
dropped it there, that'd probably look better.

[Bug 1359689] Re: cryptsetup password prompt not shown

2015-04-23 Thread gravy45
Hey, @Dekker500's workaround did not yield a text input of the
passphrase as I expected, but it did cause the graphical text entry to
come up! What in the world?

adding GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text to /etc/default/grub and then "sudo
update-grub" causes the (plymouth?) graphical screen to come up at the
next reboot

Now instead of seeing the screen flash once to black and then the
passphrase entry (as in 14.04), it does this twice, then the passphrase
can be entered in graphical entry, but hey, it is working for me.!!!

[Bug 1448318] [NEW] 15.04: Full disk encryption with home dir encryption: have to enter FDE password twice

2015-04-24 Thread gravy45
Public bug reported:

Noticed that having a full disk encryption install with home directory
encryption requires entering the full disk encryption password twice:
once to unlock the disk, and again to unlock the 'swap'. Did not
configure a separate swap, this is the default swap provided.

System: Kernel: 3.19.0-15-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 4.9.2)
Desktop: MATE 1.8.2 (Gtk 3.14.12-0ubuntu2)
Distro: Ubuntu 15.04 vivid
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Cedar [Radeon HD
5000/6000/7350/8350 Series] bus-ID: 01:00.0
   Display Server: X.Org 1.17.1 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded:
fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1920x1200@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD CEDAR GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.5.2
Direct Rendering: Yes

Confirmed it occurs on a physical machine (above hardware), also get the
following bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/vivid/+source/linux/+bug/1359689

In Virtualbox 4.3.26, the preceding bug does not appear, but two
passwords must be entered (please see attached Virtualbox screenshot).
Also confirmed on Ubuntu with unity desktop.
