[Bug 153978] Re: Missing translation for desktop-effects

2008-11-17 Thread eddie
I also confirm the problem is still there in Gutsy.

Looking for the translated string in spanish I got, I realized that this
string and also the "Keep Settings" were in "desktop-effects" in Ubuntu
Feisty package "desktop-effects". But these string are not present in
the current template.

The string in spanish is:
"Probando la configuración nueva. Si no responde en %d segundos se recuperará
la configuración anterior."

[Bug 198676] Re: nvidia-settings crashes when attempting to save settings to x conf

2008-10-16 Thread Eddie
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 194528 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194528

Thanks Jason - I just did a nvidia-xconfig followed by nvidia-settings, and it
worked, using the latest 177 drivers on intrepid.
It turns out that when the nvidia drivers are installed, nvidia-xconfig is not
run, which is used to create a xorg.conf that nvidia-settings can recognise.
Hence, later when it comes to try and modify the existing xorg.conf file (which
in my case was the default intrepid one), it doesn't know how to interpret it,
and segfaults.

In summary, try a nvidia-xconfig before nvidia-settings!

[Bug 297690] Re: automatic resume after suspend

2009-08-03 Thread Eddie
I'm seeing this in the latest Karmic update using 2.6.31-rc5, on an
Intel DG45FC mobo. It used to work a few weeks ago (around when
2.6.31-rc3 was latest, but I tried booting that and it seems to suffer
this problem too so may not be the kernel). It happens consistently at
around ~10 minutes of suspend time, and there are no discernible reasons
why it has woken up from log files. Changing back to confirmed.

[Bug 34752] Re: [atmel] breezy->dapper wifi lost: signal power to 0

2006-08-02 Thread Eddie
In my case I have upgraded my kernel to the edgy 2.6.17 and my 3com card
now works fine. I did initially upgrade the atmel-firmware package too
to the edgy version, to find that it works, and then out of curiousity
(and after reading the changelog) I downgraded it back to the latest
dapper version, and my card continued to work. Can anyone else confirm?

However, if I connect using iwconfig, it works fine (rather than it not

[Bug 71913] Re: X crash: FontFileCompleteXLFD+0xa1

2007-10-18 Thread Eddie
New Note 5

I can confirm a similar problem - I'm not sure if this is the same bug
as described here, but here goes - firefox has been completely crashing
my computer since I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy a week or so ago (i.e.
I can't switch VTs to find out what's going on, can't reset Xorg using
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace - I have to Alt+SysReq+B to reboot my computer. I've
noticed it most whenever I've been writing into text boxes (e.g. gmail)
- which makes it even more frustrating!

I have the flash plugin installed from the official repos, and my Xorg.conf is
the default configuration, albeit with the VNC module loaded, and I'm running
the latest Gutsy in dual head mode (ATI card - so using xrandr).
I have reproduced the crash using two different firefox profiles - my main one
with a handful of extensions, and a basic profile with no extensions at all -
so I think we can rule profiles out.

I have a crash log I found in /var/crash which I've submitted, and gedit-ing it
seems to bring my computer grinding to a halt - and so far I can't find any
mention of a backtrace like what some of you have included: The only mention
is:
Stacktrace: #0 0xe410 in ?? ()
StacktraceTop: ?? ()
And is it also worth mentioning that it also says that firefox-bin crashed with
SIGSEGV?

Does any of this information seem familiar to anyone else?

Sorry to hijack the thread - it's not that I don't want this package

[Bug 123548] Re: lcd brightness down doesn't work when gpm running (t60)

2007-08-30 Thread Eddie
X41 (non tablet) owner here: and I've just upgraded to the latest
2.19.6-0ubuntu4 today - and I can now adjust the brightness of my laptop
using the Fn keys, however, the GPM brightness indicator that pops up
when I do is always either at zero, or at the one up from that. (This is
better than it was previously - when previously pressing one direction
would send it all the way to the maximum/minimum). However, dragging the
brightness bar inside GPM results in the screen flickering very rapidly
between full brightness and minimum brightness - as if the full range is
every 10% of the bar. And related to that, after setting the desired
brightness, and then moving between battery and AC results in the
incorrect brightness being set. This is an improvement, I guess, because
at the very least I can fall back onto my Fn keys now which act as
expected. I would consider this a big and serious regression from
Feisty, where the brightness worked fine - all except the gnome
brightness indicator would not be in sync with the actual brightness
when the Fn keys were used (however, the indicator would pop up, but its
value wouldn't change) - and I really hope its sorted before release!

[Bug 86843] Re: modifying PAM configuration could break gksu

2007-09-03 Thread Eddie
That's a nice and simple patch - however, the fact remains that the
whole implementation of gksu is flawed: it is a wrapper around sudo,
under the assumption that sudo does not use any other PAM but the
default. For example, gdm correctly shows "Password or swipe finger" -
as gksudo should. This patch only fixes pam_thinkfinger, and if you are
using pam_bioapi, which does something a little differently (it only
implements the fingerprinting - it does not accept a password - I've set
it up so that if fingerprint fails then sudo falls back onto the normal
password prompt) - then a patch of this type would not work.

I have wrote what I think in a similar bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15093. I sent an e-mail to the Ubuntu
guy assigned to this bug, with my thoughts and an offer of help, but I
have not yet received a reply which has put me pursuing a more long
term, permanent fix.

[Bug 123548] Re: lcd brightness down doesn't work when gpm running (t60)

2007-08-13 Thread Eddie
I can confirm this also with a IBM X41, on the latest gutsy x86.

For me, this is a regression from Feisty and, I think, early Gutsy.

What happens for me though, is that pressing Fn+Home takes my screen
very quickly through all the levels to full brightness, and Fn+End to
minimum (however, pressing the opposite key stops it at that point).
Also, the strange thing is that gpm cannot seem to set the requested
brightness correctly - for example on battery I've set it to 50%, but
once gpm detects this, it looks as if it tries to set it to 50%, but it
ends up going all the way down to 0%. (In a related note, the X server
seems to be responding to the AC event much slower than in Feisty, as
shown by xev again)

I'm currently loading thinkpad-acpi manually using /etc/modules to
enable brightness support, and I can confirm that xev receives multiple
brightness up/brightness down events - and running gpm in debug mode, no
daemon, shows that it is reacting to these events.

Should this be a bug filed in X server and not here in GPM, then?

[Bug 123548] Re: lcd brightness down doesn't work when gpm running (t60)

2007-08-13 Thread Eddie
I take back my last question: it does seem to be a problem with gpm not
acknowledging to the X server that it has handled the events.

xev shows that only two events (one key down, one key up) are seen when
gpm is not running, whereas it shows multiple events when gpm is
running.

I have taken logs of xev - with and without gpm, and gpm (--no-daemon
--verbose) - during a Fn+Down event and a AC unplugging event.

[Bug 15093] Re: gksudo fails if using libpam-krb5 for password auth

2007-08-13 Thread Eddie
I don't think this is a bug with sudo - it's a bug inherently inside
gksu(do).

As you may know, gksudo is simply a wrapper inside gksudo. It executes
sudo with a -p parameter, asking it to override the default password
prompt with the supplied argument.

In gksudo's case, it asks sudo to override the prompt with the string
"GNOME_SUDO_PASS". If then checks to see if sudo says this - and if it
does, then it knows that sudo is expecting a password, and grabs the
screen and shows the dialog.

However, if it doesn't see this (for example, if thinkfinger prints
"Password or swipe finger", of if pam_bioapi displays the driver GUI and
displays nothing on the console), then it assumes that no password is
necessary - and simply sits there waiting until sudo exits.

But in most cases, this never happens: if the fingerprint has failed,
then most users will have opted to fall back onto password - in which
case sudo will be waiting for a password that will never have the
opportunity to be input.

The current workarounds work because:
a. sudo only overrides the prompt if it receives "Password:" from the password
module - in which case changing pam_thinkfinger to output "Password:" (instead
of its current "Password or swipe finger:" prompt) will cause it's prompt to
get overridden to GNOME_SUDO_PASS, and so gksudo will show itself.
b. With the suggested patches - sudo overrides the prompt to say whatever is
requested, regardless of what the module is saying.

Neither is the ideal behaviour - either a complete rewrite of gksudo
(more specifically, libgksu is where this code is written) is required
(i.e. make gksudo something more than a wrapper around a console-based
sudo), or a better method of waiting for GNOME_SUDO_PASS should be
implemented - currently I believe it reads the first 50 lines from sudo
(whether sudo has displayed 50 lines or not), and if none of them say
GNOME_SUDO_PASS, then it gives up and just assumes that no password is
necessary, and waits until sudo exits. I'm thinking it should only read
the line if it exists - because GNOME_SUDO_PASS eventually turns up once
all the preceding PAM modules have finished. This can be verified by
running gksudo in debug mode, and looking at the libgksu source.

Any other thoughts? I'm currently looking into modifying libgksu.

P.S. Sorry for such a long post!

[Bug 15093] Re: gksudo fails if using libpam-krb5 for password auth

2007-08-14 Thread Eddie
I don't like that patch because it only fixes the problem in
pam_thinkfinger's case, where it asks for the password or your finger to
be swiped.

For example, *any* other pam modules that display something to the
console, but isn't asking for the password will be overridden by sudo,
thereby springing gksudo up, prompting the user to input a password to
put in their password anyway - misleading, and possibly a security risk
also.

One example where this happens is using the UBEK binary driver and pam_bioapi -
the console version outputs to the console:
"Please wait...
Put finger
"
which I assume would be overridden by the patched sudo, and triggering gksudo.
Similarly, the GUI version does not output anything to the console - so I'm
also guessing that even the patched sudo won't save us there.

My current personal solution has been to hack libgksu to keep checking
sudo's output until it's either killed (i.e. another pam module
authenticated successfully, the application was run, and has now exit,
meaning sudo can exit too), or until GNOME_SUDO_PASS has appeared (in
which case PAM modules have failed, and it is now falling back to
password) - and only then does it open the prompt. Currently, gksudo
checks sudo's output using a non blocking method - if data doesn't
exist, then it gives up - I've changed this so that it now waits for new
data.

However, this won't make pam_thinkfinger work without patching sudo, but
I feel it is a more elegant solution - given that (I'm assuming) it will
work for any other PAM modules that fall back onto a standard sudo
prompt. I'm also getting feedback in the form of the driver GUI.

Ideally, I feel that if gksudo is to continue being a wrapper around
sudo, it should launch a "terminal" of some sort (similar to the
embedded terminals that synaptic and dpkg use), which would show the
output of any PAM modules, instead of its current password-only dialog.

[Bug 37239] Re: VPN connection should alter /etc/resolv.conf

2007-12-23 Thread Eddie
Good clarification Tom.

I've a few things to add:

- It could be argued that (2) is part of (1) - because it is NM that
spawns the DHCP daemon, and so it could be said that it's NM's
responsibility to make sure that DHCP doesn't upset the VPN plugin
functionality, which incidentally, is also part of NM.

- I would like to just point out an oversight in (1B) - what if you were
connecting to a LAN with private hostnames resolved by a private DNS
server? What you would want there is for the DNS servers to be appended
to those that already exist.

I currently suffer from scenario (1A) - and as someone has already
stated before me, the workaround I am using is to add a "append domain-
name-servers 123.456.789.ABC;" line into /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf - so
that whenever the DNS lease is renewed, the IP address 123.456.789.ABC
is appended onto the end of whatever it was going to write into
/etc/resolv.conf - and so my connection won't break.

Ideally, the solution would be for NM to be the sole manager of
/etc/resolv.conf - and so it can arbitrate between VPN/PPP and DHCP.

I read somewhere that NM 0.7 does away with using the current DHCP
daemon.. which may or may not alleviate the problem. Anyone know?

Using Nautilus 2.20.0 in Gutsy and created FTP links to a W2K box.

I'm on Feisty 32 bit, using the feisty repos fglrx drivers, and suspend does
not work for me. I have an ATI x800, and a nForce2 motherboard, on a desktop.
I have tried various combinations of options, with and without:

USE_DPMS=false
DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH=true
SAVE_VBE_STATE=true

[Bug 86843] Re: modifying PAM configuration could break gksu

2007-06-03 Thread Eddie
I am also experiencing this bug. I have a IBM Thinkpad X41, and running
the latest version of Feisty, clean installed, and using thinkfinger,
following the guide on the Ubuntu wiki.

Logging in via gdm works fine.
sudo from a terminal works fine.
gksudo does not appear - and even after swiping a finger, the application does
not appear.
A "killall gksu" is required in order to execute the application. If this is
not done, then further sudo-s and gksudo-s will function as they did without
fingerprinting - ie. sudo will not ask for a fingerprint, and gksudo will
appear and ask for a password, as it did before.
If gksudo was run from the console, then a Ctrl+C will do the same job. The
fingerprint is correctly verified though, as killing gksu without a valid
fingerprint will not launch the application.

Does anyone know where this bug lies? With gksudo (and it's
implementation?) I have googled a fair bit for this - and collected many
opinions. One is that gksu/gksudo does not have permission to grab the
screen because it is being executed by pam_thinkfinger which is being
run as root. Does anyone know if this bug applies to any other distros,
or is it specific to Ubuntu too?

[Bug 15093] Re: gksudo fails if using libpam-krb5 for password auth

2007-06-06 Thread Eddie
I am experiencing a similar bug: this time using pam_bioapi (to support
fingerprint readers), version 0.4.0.
The problem I am having is that gksudo does not pop up to ask for a password
once the fingerprint dialog is aborted, as it would be expected to do.
My common-auth is as follows:
authsufficient  pam_bioapi.so {5550454b-2054-464d-2f45-535320425350}
/etc/bioapi/pam/biodata.db :0

auth required pam_unix.so nullok_secure
gdm, and console-run sudo perform as expected - cancelling the fingerprint
dialog and it will ask for a password. However, running gksudo from console
results in:
# sudo -l
# gksudo gedit

GNOME_SUDO_PASS
at which point it echoes any characters I type at it (meaning that it's not
asking for a password), including new line characters. The only way to abort
this is to press Ctrl+C.
Note also that the screen is not blanked during the fingerprint dialog
(separate bug?)
Running gksudo from a launcher has the same effect - but obviously no console
output.
Does anyone know what GNOME_SUDO_PASS means? I've asked the google oracle, but
that hasn't got me anywhere.
I can confirm that gksudo works perfectly well without the pam_bioapi line, and
it also works if I make it ask for the password first, by changing common-auth
to:
authsufficient pam_unix.so nullok_secure

authsufficient  pam_bioapi.so {5550454b-2054-464d-2f45-535320425350}
/etc/bioapi/pam/biodata.db :0

authrequiredpam_deny.so
gksudo does blank the screen and the password dialog appears, and pressing
enter results in it unblanking and the fingerprint dialog appearing - this is
my current solution, but far from ideal as I would like the password to back
the fingerprinting.
It is also worth mentioning that this is also the case with pam_thinkfinger (an
alternative fingerprinting "driver") which does not implement a separate
fingerprinting dialog - gksudo does not appear at all, and after a successful
fingerprint read gksudo does not exit - and a killall is required to bring the
authenticating application up - though this also may be a error with
pam_thinkfinger (version tested: 0.3.0).
All in all, I think we can conclude that gksudo (which from what I understand,
is simply a wrapper for the console based sudo) does not support external pam
modules very well?

[Bug 86843] Re: modifying PAM configuration could break gksu

2007-06-06 Thread Eddie
I would also like to add that I've been trying with the bioapi implementation -
with the UBEK binary driver and pam_bioapi - which seems to be slightly more
successful.
The UBEK binary driver implements a (ugly, but functional) fingerprint dialog
(rather than relying on the user application to say "Password or swipe finger")
- and it is my belief that it is a userspace implementation rather than one
requiring root permissions. With this, a dialog does appear, which after a
successful authentication, gksudo will exit as normal and the application
requested will be executed - unlike with pam_thinkfinger currently.
Regarding this bug, it might be worth pointing out the similarity between this
and: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15093, where I have written a length post
regarding the problems I am experiencing with pam_bioapi, should you be
interested.

[Bug 90681] Re: resolv.conf overwritten using VPN/PPP etc...

2007-06-06 Thread Eddie
I can confirm that I'm seeing the same bug with 32bit Feisty. The problem I am
seeing is exactly the same as what has been described above - if the underlying
interface has short DHCP lease, and it is renewed whilst the PPTP tunnel is
enabled, then traffic will not be interrupted continue, but resolv.conf will be
overwritten by dhclient.
I have applied the workaround (not updating resolv.conf when renewing leases) -
though I can agree that is far from optimal. I was thinking of hacking the
script so that it searches for a "ppp" interface in ifconfig to verify that a
PPTP (or any VPN?) tunnel is up - and therefore do not force a update.
However, the more elegant solution would be if NM can detect and handle a DHCP
renew (which isn't possible, as NM is simply a wrapper for dhclient and other
underlying processes?) - and merge the new nameservers (in the case that they
have changed since last lease? Unlikely, but possible?) with the existing VPN
ones. This is elegant in that it will respect the USEPEERDNS option of the
tunnel.
And in response to hq4ever - I believe you are experiencing another bug - one
where NM does not respect the USEPEERDNS option - in a nutshell: if it is
selected, then it works - if it's not, then NM replaces the existing
resolv.conf with an empty one - which is not expected behaviour. See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/37239 ?

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 80893 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/80893

Can confirm this on a IBM Thinkpad X41 (not tablet). After hibernate,
sound does not work. Does not come back after a soft reset - requires a
hard power off and power on again to have sound. Suspending and resuming
does not seem to affect sound (will check), along with a suspend/resume
straight after hibernation to see if that restores sound, as some have
reported. This is on Feisty, 32 bit.

[Bug 37239] Re: VPN connection should alter /etc/resolv.conf

2007-04-18 Thread Eddie
Ok, let me try again!

If I do not select USEPEERDNS and open a VPN, then /etc/resolv.conf will
be empty (except for the "# generated by NetworkManager, do not edit!"
header). I believe this is not correct: the existing DNS server should
be kept. However, it behaves as expected when USEPEERDNS is selected. Is
this the issue you're seeing here?

If the answer is yes, then I am still seeing the issue on the latest
Feisty NM.

[Bug 37239] Re: VPN connection should alter /etc/resolv.conf

2007-03-27 Thread Eddie
I'm using the latest Feisty version with NetworkManager and the PPTP VPN
plugin. When USEPEERDNS is selected, NM edits /etc/resolv.conf with DNS
server of the server I'm connecting into, which if I'm not mistaken is
desired behaviour. However, when USEPEERDNS is not selected, NM does not
fill /etc/resolv.conf with anything, as a result I am left with no DNS,
and I need to manually echo my gateway into resolv.conf to get it back.
I'm not sure I fully understand the issue here, but I hope this helps,
and hopefully someone else can shed some light onto mine! I understand
that the /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/usepeerdns script is only executed when
USEPEERDNS is selected, and when this happens some resolv.conf backups
appear in /etc generated by pppd, but when it is not, no such files
appear. From this, I gather that ppp is not updating resolv.conf, and if
this is intended, then NM should be instead. And by now, not even I have
any idea whether or not I'm making sense anymore! =)

[Bug 34752] Re: [atmel] breezy->dapper wifi lost: signal power to 0

2007-03-27 Thread Eddie
Just like to add that this is still not resolved: my "solution" above is
a workaround, and now that shared authentication is no longer an option
for me, I am back to having to resort to using iwconfig to manually
bring my wireless up, rather than using the convenience of
NetworkManager.

More importantly, I am using the latest Feisty build, and the problem
still exists. I am under the impression that this is a wpa_supplicant
bug (as NM simply uses the services offered by wpa_supplicant) - rather
than it being a kernel based one - so maybe we should move it over
there?

[Bug 74482] samba and smbldap

2006-12-04 Thread Eddie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

It seems that there is a bug with the newer version (3.0.22) of samba
/smbldap-tools. I have set-up
ldap(2.2.26)/samba(3.0.22)/smbldap(0.9.2-3) on Ubuntu6.10 (edgy). I used
the samba.schema which came with samba-doc(3.0.22) and all works fine up
until the point of joining a domain where I seem to be getting "The user
name could not be found" The user name I use is root with the password I
used when I created the root account using smbpasswd -a root

I have done a similar set-up on a Centos 4.4 with samba 3.0.10 and it is
working perfectly.

Also, one thing that has also changed since I last used the dapper

was that I was previously using just the 386 image, and not the 686 one
I am using now...

I have this problem too, with an atmel device, on Dapper. NM refuses to
connect to any WEP access point, and it has already been pointed out
that this is seeming a problem to do with wpa_supplicant also.

However, setting the essid and key using iwconfig (or inside

[Bug 34752] Re: [atmel] breezy->dapper wifi lost: signal power to 0

2006-09-29 Thread Eddie
Oops, seems I spoke too soon - I've tried my 3com card on another
accesspoint (D-Link one) and it no longer works, with or without WEP
encryption, I can't seem to associate properly.

However, previously, it worked on a 3com AP. I have a suspicion that
it's something to do with the authentication mode (sudo iwconfig key
open|restricted xxx). I seem to recall that on my 3com router, I
didn't need to specify open (unfortunately I don't have access to the
3com router anymore) and it still worked, whereas that is not the case
for my D-Link (which I now have access to, and I have tested under edgy
that "open" is required)

Can someone please confirm? Thanks!

[Bug 507113] Re: Karmic/powerpc: CD/DVD media not recognized

2010-01-29 Thread Eddie
I get the purpose of these posts, but unfortunately I'm not so keen on
applying an attachment/patch.

All I can say is that my 12" PPC G4 is unable to mount any DVD/CDs
regardless of the manufacturer or volume. Never had 9.04 on this PPC so
i'm unfamiliar with how the optical drive worked on that, but on Karmic
it is a pain to work around on and I see this same situation on many
forums. Would love to get this resolved and begin to use Brasero and VLC
to begin burning and watching my DVDs as well as CDs.

I will say that the application "Sysinfo" under the "Storage" tab does
read and recognize the volume on my optical drive so I'm sure there is
some light at the end of this tunnel. If anyone can assist me on
providing more information such as what kallewirsch has done I will be
more than glas to provide such info to this post.

[Bug 1439948] Re: Horizontal scrolling on Thinkpad USB Keyboard with Trackpoint

2016-12-14 Thread Eddie
I'm on Kubuntu 16.04.1 on 4.4.0-51.72 kernel. I noticed after a kernel
update that it was working both horizontally and vertically with the
trackpoint on the Lenovo Thinkpad USB keyboard model number KU-1255. I
figured this group had already been notified.

If others can confirm, I think this bug can be marked as FIXED.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 gammaray : Depends: qtbase-abi-5-5-1
Recommends: gammaray-probe-qt4 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
```
It is not available as a QtCreator plugin, is it?
Would be really awesome if you are planning to have some sort of easy
peasy to use (download click and run sort of self contained binary) like
an AppImage app (http://appimage.org/) or SnapCraft
(http://snapcraft.io/) image will do.
