hello,

I have this very problem with my laptop (VGN-SZ4XN).
Moreover also the external mic and speakers don't work: whatever I plug is mute.

it's the first time I write a comment: if there is anything (log files,
etc) I could post to help please let me know.

hey!

after a while I fixed the problem with the following:

sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

Now everything works fine by I using the OSS, not the HDA.
I've tested the laptop speakers, the external speakers and the built-in mic. 
This evening Iĺl try the ext. mic as well: if I don report it means worked (and 
Iĺl avoid some garbage here).
