[Bug 429419] [NEW] xorg.conf needs to be reconfigured at each reboot
Public bug reported: Hello, first my config IBM Pentium III Coppermine 1Gh 512Mo Ram (SDRAM PC133) Asus AH3450 (ATI Radeon) 256Mo 80Gig Hard Drive Dual-Boot Windows XP Pro - Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha 5 Kubuntu 9,10 Alpha 5 with Kernel 2.6.31-10 Compiz-Fusion is installed and working without bugs. The bug, each time i boot, kubuntu hangs after this line "Checking Battery State" and after 10 secs my computer stops to respond. This bug accures no matter if i have fglrx installed or not. (I tried with and without the driver and it gave me the same results) First i was thinking maybe xorg.conf had an error so i entered this command in recovery mode "cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and from all the researches i made this file is normal. But for me, the only way to avoid the bug was to do this : In recovery mode - rootnet rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg aticonfig --initial -f <-i had to add this one after i installed fglrx from Hardware Drivers reboot now after reboot, averything return to normal but after another reboot. i have to start over again and delete xorg.conf and configure fglrx to be sure it's in xorg.conf. I've tried with only Kwin active(without any desktop effects and Compiz disabled) and i got the same bug. As i said, the only way i have to avoid this bug is to delete the present xorg.conf file and to create a new one. I'm not sure what's going on because if it was fglrx causing this, the bug would not had occure when the driver is not installed. And it's unlikely a Compiz bug because the first time this bug came up Compiz wasn't installed and fglrx wasn't installed eather. This bug occured after i upgraded Kubuntu 9.04 to Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha 5 with kernel 2.6.31-9 and after i reboot, i had to do a kernel update to 2.6.31-10. After i reboot again after the kernel update, the bug showed up. Since i haven't find any bug resemling mine i report it here. I think it's a bug with xorg and the new kernel but i'm not an expert about linux so i need help for this one. I made the updates this morning (Wed, 16 sep. 6h10am Quebec time) and i had a major bug. During the installation of the update of the kernel 2.6.31-10, i had lots of lines with "SEGV" messages saying somthing like "process interrupted by SEGV signal" and the next line ending with "respawning" and those line repeated endlessly till my computer stalled and i had to reboot and when i did it, i had a message i had to run "fsck" manually. Thats what i did and after i ran this command, i reboot with "CONTROL+D". Unfortunatly, the ploblem was still there and it keep asking me to run "fsck" manually and i had to reinstall Kubuntu 9.04. Obviously the problem is the kernel 2.6.31-10 because since that kernel is out, i had all kinds of bugs. So i guess i'll wait for Alpha 6 before upgrading my Kubuntu again. Lets hope Lady-luck will be with me lol. If the problem with xorg comes out again after the upgrade to Alpha 6 i will post the output you asked. Of course if in the Alpha 6 xorg is ok i will let you know as well. Last update until the problem is solve ... I think i found something worth interest. Today, i installed the fglrx driver from the repositories of Kubuntu 9.10 RC and it installed well. Then after i reboot i logged normally and then i had to setup the correct screen resolution. No big deal so far but when i reboot same problem as before. But i reboot again and choose the normal boot instead of the recovery mode i wanted. During the boot, a routine file system check has been performed automaticly (i think it is performed automaticly after a certain amount of boot) and then resume to the rest of the boot process. SURPRISE ! I had my graphic back !!! But my joy was short because when i had to reboot the problem shown up again. I wanted to see if it was just a lucky shot or it was something else so i reboot lots of times until the file system check was performed again and guess what? Yes, i had my graphic back again ! There is something in that file system check that seems to repair somehow the problem but not permanently just until the next reboot. I don't know much about programming but i'd bet it has something to do with the use (or no use) of the "xorg.conf" file by Kubuntu 9.10. Maybe it's a good clue or maybe not, as i said i'm not a programmer but the fact everything return to normal after the automatic file system check, even if it only solved my problem until i reboot, i think it might worth investigating. Sorry i forgot to mention i just installed Kubuntu 9.10 tonight (the final version not the RC). I'd like to mention this, once i have graphics and acces to my desktop everything is working beautyfully. Tx for the info but why the driver worked perfercly with previous versions of the kernel(2.6.31-10 and previous versions present in Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha 4( Alpha 4 installed with the 2.6.31-5.24 kernel based on 2.6.31-rc5, see http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha4 for more info) and Alpha 5(Alpha 5 installed with the 2.6.31-9.29 kernel based on 2.6.31-rc8, see http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/alpha5 for more info) and not with 2.6.31-12? On both Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha 4 and Alpha 5 the same driver installed without error. Since the kernel 2.6.31 no longer export the symbol find_task_by_vpid as you said, would it be logical that the problem should also occures with all the kernel 2.6.31 versions and not just with the most recent versions of this kernel ? I've also reported the bug to AMD. I'm not expecting a fast reply from them but maybe one day i'll have their side of the story lol. I apreciate your efforts, i will try it when i'll find all the documentation i need to compile the kernel and what results i should expect and what problems could eventually occure after the operation. I will post the results as soon as i can. If it don't work, i guess my only hope to solve this will be the next ATI Catalyst driver due later this october. If nothing is solved with the new ATI Catalyst driver and the final release of Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic. i might consider the option to install Kubuntu 9.04 (with kernel 2.6.28-15 since the driver installed and worked to perfection) . Failiure ... looks like this solution isn't for Kubuntu probably because it's a debian linux and Mandriva is a mandrake linux. Well that's just a guess of course. Or maybe i made a mistake somewhere in the process but anyway i had to re-installed Kubuntu 9.10 Beta. The rev of the ATI Catalyst driver is due later this month so i'll wait to see if that will solve my problem. Since i'm running a beta i'm not really surprised because such problem is often seen on alpha and beta OS and from what i've seen this far, ATI driver and dev OS aren't really the perfect match lol. Of course, running an old beast (really old) PC isn't really helping me either lol. Old PC and new OS ... not always a lucky match. Tx for your efforts guys, even if it didn't work for me it worth a try. I just want to mention that the very same driver (dowloaded from AMD website) worked perferctly on Karmic Alpha 4 and despise the xorg.conf bug i had in Alpha 5 everything was working fine after the login and the problem was only during the boot. Bug now even with the restricted drivers from the repositories i can't even reach the login screen because my computer crashed. I guess i will not be using compiz for a while lol. I hope the new version of the ATI Catalyst driver will be the good one. One more thing, in the make.log file it is mentioned something like this "You must be logged in as root to run this script." but i was in the terminal with the "root@" so it's not making any sens to me. How can i get this while i'm logged as root. Sorry to double post but i think it might be important to mention it. Update ... I installed ATI Catalyst 9-10(8.661) on a fresh install of Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Release Candidate. The driver installed well but during the driver installation a xorg.conf has been created by the ATI Catalyst installer(because there was no xorg.conf file present in "/etc/X11" folder) and when i reboot i had no graphic so i reboot again and choose the recovery mode. I had to delete the xorg.conf file and create a new one again and configuring it with "aticonfig --initial -f" then reboot again to have it work correctly. When i finaly got in the desktop i had to reconfigure the screen resolution using "sudo amdcccle". Note if i just reboot after that everything stays ok but if i shotdown my computer and restart it instead of just doing a reboot the problem shows up again and i have to reboot in recovery mode to do the same process. So to be short, the problem is the same i had with Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha 4 with the previous driver of ATI Catalyst. My guess is Kubuntu 9.10 does not use xorg.conf the same way the previous versions of Kubuntu were using it. The problem is the ATI driver NEEDS this file to be installed and configured correctly. However, the xorg.conf file seems to become corrupted or obselete after shotdown but seems to keep its integrity after a reboot. P.S. : The recovery mode of kernel 2.6.31-14 is buggy, sometimes it's unusable because it's showing strange rendomly placed messages when i using the arrows to move between the options. [Bug 429419] Re: xorg.conf needs to be reconfigured at each reboot
An other update ... I made the update this afternoon and it asked me to reboot. I reboot and no graphic, what a surprised you'd say but the problem is my little workaround isn't working anymore. I had to uninstall ATI driver to regain access to the login screen and then to the desktop environement. It's no big deal but i'd like to know why it worked and now it's no longer working. It's me again. Thanks to a friend of mine i think i have a clue on what could be the problem. He suggested this to me. Instead of shuting down my pc from Kubuntu, he told me i should try to shutdown my pc from Windows XP. And when it's time to start my pc again i should choose Windows XP first and once Windows finished loading i should reboot and then choose Kubuntu. To be honest i thought he was joking but i tried it anyway. And It WORKDED. I tried it 6 times in a row(the exact sequence he suggested) and it worked everytimes. When i told him about the results he told me maybe the problem is in the shutdown protocols and it might be messing with my xorg.conf file if i shutdown my pc from Kubuntu and the only workaround he could see for now is to shutdown my pc from Windows instead of Kubuntu. For now it's working for me so far. I don't know if it will always work with this workaround but it's working. I'm a bit surprised it works but i'm glad it does. The problem still remain but at least i have a workaround so i won't have to go in recovery mode and rm xorg.conf and cp the backup. PROBLEM SOLVED with your #1 solution(rmmod fglrx; modprobe fglrx in recovery mode) However i had to do a "hard shutdown" since the "shutdown now" command kept returning me to the recovery mode menu. After a cold boot i had all my graphics working correctly. Just to be sure i shutdown my pc 5 times(from k menu) to see if the graphics were working correctly and it did eveytimes so i guess my problem is solved. I don't know what this command line is doing but it solved my problem. I wrote both solutions you suggested to me so if the bug shows up again on future Kubuntu versions i will know whre to look and what to do thanks to you :) Thank for all your efforts eveyone and thanks too for your patience.
