thanks a lot !
yesterday I have also found another fix: replace .kde/share/config/kwinrulesrc
by the one I had in kde 3.5. Don't ask me why then it works.
But your method is far better of course. In fact it should be related because
it is the file where the initial default size can be specified...

[Bug 300805] [NEW] usb hard drive does not enter standby mode before shutdown

2008-11-21 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

I'm testing the new intrepid (kubuntu)

I have a USB external hard drive connected to my laptop, and I think
linux is supposed to make hard drives go to sleep (standby mode) before
turning the power off. Apparently it does not for the USB drive, since I
can hear an unpleasant 'click' when the laptop powers off.

(It's the same click when you turn off a laptop by pressing the power
button for a long time, in case everything hangs)

I'm quite afraid it could damage the hard drive if repeated frequently.

Of course I could do sleep the HD manually by hdparm -Y /dev/sdb but
it's impossible for me because I would like to boot ubuntu on this
volume, so the hard drive is needed until the last operation.

[Bug 296064] Re: [Intrepid] Text editing in KMail 1.0.1 dreadfully slow

2009-05-13 Thread Vu Ngoc San
well I still have this problem in KDE 4.2.3

run "top" in a konsole and
just open the kmail editor and start typing in the middle of a long line:
"top" reports that xorg uses 80% of CPU !
(yes I mean xorg, not kmail itself)
of course it soon becomes very slow and often continue typing a couple a
seconds after your fingers have stopped...

I must say this is really annoying (especially when you have colleagues
peaking at your screen :( ...)

To compare, doing the same typing in an emacs window makes xorg use
about 15%CPU...

2009-07-03 Thread Vu Ngoc San
wow, I'm going to try that.
I have been struggling with this bug for months. And in a working environment
where I usually try to convince my colleages that linux is better, I have to
say it was so embarassing that these artifacts appear all the time that
I would only hide my kubuntu... Not even to mention the fact that I often need
to make video presentations... what a shame.
I have tried all combinations of intel driver options and versions, none would
work.

Ok so I've installed everything from

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/experimental/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/experimental/ubuntu jaunty main

(had to do several sudo apt-get install dist-upgrade before installation
succeeded - but X did not crash)

It is now much better: for instance just moving the mouse over the
messages list in kmail used to make Xorg use 70% CPU, and now it is
about 30%.

However the painting artifacts are NOT gone: see screenshot (top right
of kmail window)

Too bad!

[Bug 234525] [NEW] kmail imap unduely slow

2008-05-24 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

On a slow connection, kmail+imap is almost impossible to use due to its
slowness.
My connection is particularly slow in the outgoing direction (about 10kb/sec).

What I don't understand is that attachments are supposed to be
downloaded on demand, but each time I check for mail, it takes for ever
when some messages have big attachments. Opening the "task list" I see

1. downloading message data. This is reasonably fast
2. sending message data. This is very slow. It seems to me that all attachments
of all new messages are sent back to the server !!

The second step always occur, even if I don't click on messages with
attachments.
Due to this, it is really IMPOSSIBLE for me to use kmail.

I have to use thunderbird, which has no problem at all. Everything is
fast and responsive with thunderbird (with the same IMAP server).
Attachments are downloaded only when I click on the message, and they
are not sent back to the server ! Dealing with messages with attachments
is about 20x faster with thunderbird...

I'm very sad of this because I like kontact very much.

(forgot to say I have a brand new kubuntu hardy 8.04)

Indeed, I confirm that CapsLock does not turn on and off the light on the

Also, Last time I checked, I did a hard reboot, and after the reboot the

[Bug 309927] [NEW] random crash with vertical stripes

2008-12-20 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I'm having this bug for one year with kubuntu 7.10,8.04 and 8.10 on a
Dell latitude D630, with Intel GM965 video card.

Randomly, the system crashes with some kind of vertical stripes (or 'ladders')
across the screen.
Keyboard and mouse is not responsive. Even ALT+SYS don't work. I have to hard
reboot using the power button.
See screenshot (from hardy).

It can happen when I'm working, but it seems that most of the time it happens
when I do nothing.
Sometimes it happens a few seconds after login dialog (like in screenshot).

It is very difficult to debug because it occurs about only once every
two weeks.

Is see no timed trace in log files. Only thing that could be related is
(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe B!
in Xorg.0.log
That's why I put it under xserver-xorg-video-intel (I'm using now version
2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10)
I use a dual screen setup in xorg.conf (even when I'm not connected to an
external monitor), but I think it happened also with a plain setup.

Interestingly it has happen a couple of time when I was listening to
music, and after crash I could still hear some distorted sound...

First I thought it was hardware problem, but all tests passed
successfully and I even had Dell change the motherboard.

I also ran kubuntu from an external HD, and it crashed again anyway.

So you guys are my last hope :)

[Bug 307136] [NEW] dolphin+konsole triggers infinite number of kio-thumbnails

2008-12-11 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dolphin

Open dolphin, select (without opening it) an icon representing an image
or pdf file. The thumbnail should appear in the "information panel"
(otherwise open the information panel F11)

Then press F4 to open a konsole attached to the same window.

Then, strangely, an ever growing number of kio_thumbnails are triggered (check
with 'top' on a separate terminal)
and (of course) the system becomes very very slow.

Close the konsole (F4) and everything gets back in order.

I'm using kubuntu Intrepid installed from scratch.

2007-10-29 Thread Vu Ngoc San
I confirm. I have the same problem, and this make advi completely
unusable for me. All my talks have eps in them.

I have a fresh Kubuntu 7.10 install and I cannot run my talks. Last week
I had to borrow and old laptop to give my presentation. (a
debian/unstable box where the gs-esp version was frozen to 7.something
probably for a similar reason)

If someone has a workaround I'd be more than happy.

[Bug 174650] Re: xorg very slow when rotated on external monitor

2008-01-14 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Here are some more pieces of information.

* indeed there is no corruption, and it is quite stable (at least as
stable as in the single screen config)

* if the "rotate" option is in xorg.conf, or if I do it manually after X
is launched, with xrandr, the result is the same.

* if I disable DRI in xorg.conf by adding
Option "DRI" "false"
then X won't start (black screen).
However if I start without DRI AND without rotate, then I can rotate with
xrandr, but the result is the same as before (slow).

* the option
Option "NoAccel" "true"
has the same effect and disabling DRI above.

* the option "AccelMethod" "EXA" or "XXA" has no visible influence

* I have also tried to disable the laptop screen by xrandr --output=LVDS
--off, but the result is still the same.

I'm really out of clue here, sorry. I hope someone can make sense out of
it.

[Bug 174650] Re: xorg very slow when rotated on external monitor

2008-01-14 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Hey, I think I know what causes this. It's the virtual size. It was
clearly written in my xorg.conf, so I should have noticed before. But
they stated that the issue was for pre-965 so I didn't pay attention. So
it seems that it holds for 965 as well.

Here is it:
if I do:
xrandr --output LVDS --pos 607x1100
then my virtual size becomes 2047 x 2000, and the display becomes nice and
smooth.
But if i do:
xrandr --output LVDS --pos 607x1100
then the virtual size is 2048 x 2000 and suddenly everything becomes very slow
on the external monitor (but, as I said, still smooth on the laptop screen).

[Bug 174650] xorg very slow when rotated on external monitor

2007-12-07 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I run kubuntu gutsy on a dell d630 with an external monitor.
It works well and fast (after manual tweaking of xorg.conf), except when
I put my external monitor in vertical position and use
   Option"Rotate" "left"
in xorg.conf.

Then display is ok but VERY slow: when I move a window, I can see frames
trying to catch up at a rate less that 3/sec (and less than 1/sec in
fullscreen !) . And xorg uses 100% cpu when I do this.

[Bug 178328] kdeprint spoils cupsd.conf and disconnect local printer

2007-12-23 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeprint

This concerns kubuntu gutsy.

The "add new printer" wizard doesn't detect local printer (usb) after
using cups server configuration tool.

Here are the steps to reproduce:

1. plug in a usb printer
2. in the system settings -- Printers, select Add -- add a printer
(sorry my system is in French and I have not checked the exact english
translation)
3. the wizard appears, click "Next", and the first radio box you can check is
"local printer (parallel, serial, usb)".
4. cancel.

5. Now, in the main kdeprint window, select "server" (the third menu) and
"configure server".
6. just apply.

7. retry steps 1--3: the "local printer" now cannot be selected !
(and in fact if you had a printer already configured, it does not work anymore)

The intial behaviour can be recovered by
cd /etc/cups
sudo cp cupsd.conf.default cupsd.conf
sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

(honestly I spent a whole day to figure this fix out ! :( )

2010-03-06 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sdlbasic

well it is easy to describe:

sudo apt-get install sdlbasic

sdlBasic
Erreur de segmentation

(segmentation fault)

However I can run .sdlbas test files directly using sdlBrt.

So probably only the editor is in fault here...

I'm running kubuntu 9.10 with amd64 arch.

[Bug 424748] [NEW] kontact doesn't restart after using ktimetracker

2009-09-05 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

I'm using karmic alpha 5, amd64

Steps to reproduce:

1. open kontact via the kde menu.
2. click on the "ktimetracker" tab (bottom left of the kontact window)
3. close the kontact window
4. try to fire up kontact again: it won't show up!

Needless to say, this makes ktimetracker completely unusable !

in fact kontact can be run again only if you manually kill the kontact
process.

[ Another (small) bug that makes me feel that ktimetracker has not been
really tested here: when you create a new task, instead of an icon, a
"question mark" icon appear in front of the task ]

[Bug 300805] Re: usb hard drive does not enter standby mode before shutdown

2009-09-05 Thread Vu Ngoc San
I've just downloaded karmic alpha 5 and will try to do what you
suggested.

I can already testify that, as before, just "unmounting" the usb hard
disk via kde interface will not put it to sleep, and I can still hear
the "click" when I unplug it.

I believe this is the same issue as mentioned here:

[Bug 403610] Re: kde 4.3 Multiple Monitors tells lies

2009-08-24 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Same bad behaviour here with intel hardware.

It seems that the "Multiple Monitors" section is designed to work only with
xinerama
(indeed the service called when you click on this section is called 'xinerama':
try
"kcmshell4 xinerama")
but xinerama is deprecated (according to Xorg) !

here is the head of the file
/usr/share/kde4/services/xinerama.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Icon=preferences-desktop-display-multiple
Type=Service
X-KDE-ServiceTypes=KCModule
Exec=kcmshell4 xinerama
X-DocPath=kcontrol/multiplemonitors.html
# This is still awfully broken, first of all Hidden= here doesn't work
# for some reason and second this is statically done at kbuildsycoca time.
# X-KDE-Test-Module (KCModuleLoader::testModule() in KDE3) needs to be brought
back.
#Hidden[$e]=$(if test_kcm_xinerama; then echo "false"; else echo "true"; fi)

2009-08-24 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Mmmm
I thought then "gnome-display-properties" would be a good workaround,
since it works perfectly under gnome.
(with a nice graphical interface that does screens positioning)

But for some reason "gnome-display-properties" cannot apply changes when
run under KDE.

Does someone know what to do to have "gnome-display-properties" work
under KDE ?

[Bug 459612] [NEW] slow tablet pointer motion in karmic AMD64

2009-10-24 Thread Vu Ngoc San
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wacom-tools

This might be a duplicate of Bug #365997 but I'm not a sure about this.

On my toshiba portege M750, which is a tablet-pc, the pointer moves ok
when I move the stylus close to the screen without touching. But as soon
as I touch the screen, the pointer suddenly becomes slow. It 'lags
behing' the pen noticeably, making it almost impossible to write or draw
decently. So I think this is a very important issue.

Strange thing is that there is no problem with the i386 version of karmic. The
bug appears only with the amd64 version.
You can test is already with live-CDs.

The problem does not show up for the "touch" device, ie when you touch
the screen with something other than the stylus.
