[Bug 106737]

To avoid this, you could just try to rename to fo1, fo2, ... foa, fob, ...
until success. tmp may be already in use.

[Bug 1828638] Re: Support sane option --scan-area on GUI applications

2021-07-05 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

Several sane backends provide the option --scan-area to guarantee the
scan is correctly aligned, even if the scan area with automatic document
feeder (ADF) is right-aligned in contrast to the flatbed of the same
  device, which is normally left-aligned.

Currently SimpleScan and XSane only support options -l -t -x -y, which
leads to misalignment of some scanners when using the ADF.

As example for this problem see:
  https://gitlab.com/utsushi/utsushi/issues/68

[Bug 1904076] [NEW] GRUB install should delete active flag on Windows EFI boot entry

2020-11-12 Thread UlfZibis
Public bug reported:

1. Have Windows 10 installed
2. Install Ubuntu 20.04
3. Start PC, choose Ubuntu in GRUB menu
4. --> Ubuntu is started correctly
5. Restart PC, choose Windows in GRUB menu
4. --> Windows is started correctly
5. Restart PC,
8. --> No GRUB menu, Windows is started immediately

Ubuntu can only be started by manually escaping to the BIOS boot device
menu, because starting Windows has changed the EFI bootorder with
priority to Windows.

Workaround: Manually delete the active flag on the Windows EFI boot
entry with efibootmgr.

So solution could be, that grub-install would delete this flag.

** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Bug 1863434] Re: 20.04 grub menu not visible

2020-11-12 Thread UlfZibis
I have the same issue on Lenovo T540p and the latest BIOS update. It has no
dual graphics, only Intel.
Instead of the GRUB boot menu I only see a black screen with big "Lenovo"
logotype. After a while, Ubuntu is started automatically, as it is the first
entry in the boot menu.
However, the boot menu is functional with the up/down keys + Enter.

Starting the PC from an external drive with Ubuntu life media or
MultiSystem USB drive, it's GRUB boot menu is visible as usual.

[Bug 1648278] Re: Make Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image directly installable on UEFI machine

2018-12-06 Thread UlfZibis
@Alkis, thanks for being back again.

I never have seen this grub menu with Ubuntu Life media, even when
burned to CD. The reason may be, that I regularly use MultiSystem since
some years or never had a EFI machine in my hands before using
MultiSystem (does this grub menu appear also on BIOS machines?).

But a problem remains ... I suspect, the "change media trick" will work
with USB media instead CD media.

Maybe I can try your steps 4), 5) after booting via MultiSystem ... "Try
Ubuntu" with 32-bit ISO.

[Bug 1648278] Re: Make Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image directly installable on UEFI machine

2018-11-01 Thread UlfZibis
Thanks for the alternative workaround. But I have some questions:
- What you mean by "in grub"? I'm not familiar with the Ubuntu Mate Live CD,
only with Ubuntu and Lubuntu, and there is no GRUB menu. Do you mean the
welcome screen?
- I'm wondering how this alternative will work on machines like mine where no
CD drive is available. Does it also work with USB-key, especially if both ISOs
are on the same key with MultiSystem?

** Description changed:

Only with a workaround I can install Ubuntu 32-bit on a UEFI machine:
  - First install Ubuntu 64-bit on a temporary partition.
  - Then install Ubuntu 32-bit with ubiquity -b
  - Start Ubuntu 64-bit and run update-grub.
  - Start Ubuntu 32-bit.

To make Ubuntu 32-bit update-proof I can run:
  sudo apt install grub-efi-amd64
  sudo mount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
  sudo grub-install --efi-directory /boot/efi --force-extra-removable
After I can delete the temporary Ubuntu 64-bit installation

To make Ubuntu 32-bit again bootable with UEFI secure boot I can additionally
run:
  sudo dpkg --add-architecture amd64
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo dpkg --install
Download/grub-efi-amd64-signed_1.66.2+2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.2_amd64.deb
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed
  sudo grub-install
  sudo apt-get install shim
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure shim
  sudo grub-install

Please make this possible directly with the Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image !

Rationale: The recommended 64-bit Ubuntu and 64-bit applications need up
to 30 % more RAM so the pain of swapping occurs more likely and on UEFI-
- machines with few resources such as Netbooks. There 64-bit applications
+ machines with few resources such as Netbooks. Their 64-bit applications
often perform up to 30 % slower than 32-bit applications, e.g.: Firefox.

See also: bug 1650337, bug 1649167

Another WORKAROUND only using the 32-bit Live-image via "Try Ubuntu":

  ubiquity -b

sudo mount /dev/sdaX /mnt # Ubuntu target partition sdaX
  sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi # EFI-partition sda1
  for dir in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount --bind $dir
/mnt/$dir; done
  sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash

  dpkg --add-architecture amd64
  apt-get update
  apt-get install grub-efi-amd64-signed
  Optional: shim-signed
  grub-install [--efi-directory /boot/efi]
  update-grub
  exit

- In case of dual boot with Windows,in EFI-setup the boot order must me changed.
+ In case of dual boot with Windows, in EFI-setup the boot order must me
changed.
Surprisingly, there was a menu entry in NVRAM, even the configuration via
efibootmgr is impossible, caused by missing efivarfs driver in the 32-bit
kernel.

[Bug 1767522] [NEW] Error with apt-get install grub-efi-amd64-signed

[Bug 1755307] Re: Linux Kernel 4.4.0-116 does not work on ASUS-F200MA

2018-03-12 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

  Steps to Reproduce:
  - Ubuntu-32 16.04.1 on ASUS-F200MA
+ - last Update in Dec 2017 with Linux Kernel 4.4.0-104
+ - Update in Mar 2018 with Linux Kernel 4.4.0-116
+ - Reboot
+
+ Result:
+ - Boot hangs with Ubuntu-Startscreen in wrong Resolution 800x600 instead
1366x768.
+ - The dots are moving, but nothing more happens.
+
+ The Boot with Linux Kernel 4.4.0-104 still works and all hardware too, so I
uninstalled 4.4.0--116 and manually installed Linux Kernel 4.4.0-108
+ Result:
+ - Boot successful with Ubuntu-Startscreen, but again in wrong Resolution
800x600.
+ - After login: wrong graphic resolution: 800x600, switch to 1366x768 not
possible, no Sound, no network connection etc.
+
+ Installing HWE Kernel with:
+ - sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04
xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04
+
+ Result:
+ - The system aigain works correctly.

2018-03-14 Thread UlfZibis
Hi,
the mainline kernel v4.4.121 works fine.
Please note, that with the installation of the hwe-16.04 kernel, also xserver
was updated to 1.19, so I can not say anything about the combination of kernel
v4.4.121 with the original xserver.

Now I have:

[Bug 1828290] [NEW] Add missing extensions for Nemo to the repository

2019-05-08 Thread UlfZibis
Public bug reported:

I'm missing following extensions for Nemo:

[Bug 1828638] [NEW] Support sane option --scan-area on GUI applications

2019-05-10 Thread UlfZibis
Public bug reported:

Several sane backends provide the option --scan-area to guarantee the
scan is correctly aligned, even if the scan area with automatic document
feeder (ADF) is right-aligned in contrast to the flatbed of the same
device, which is normally left-aligned.

Currently SimpleScan and XSane only support options -l -t -x -y, which
leads to misalignment of some scanners when using the ADF.

As example for this problem see:
https://gitlab.com/utsushi/utsushi/issues/68

[Bug 545778] Re: xul-ext-lightning is only available in English

2019-08-09 Thread UlfZibis
The XPI at https://addons.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/addon/lightning/ is again
pretty old and for TB version 60.0.
The latest is also such old and for TB version 60.5, but currently we have TB
version 60.8, see:
https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/lightning/versions/

Nobody needs *all* language packs on his system. What is the size of the
unpacked lightning with only one additional language pack?

[Bug 545778] Re: xul-ext-lightning is only available in English

2019-08-09 Thread UlfZibis
When I unpack the latest XPI it only occupies 17 MB (including 12 MB for the
locales), so I'm wondering, why the Debian approach needs 24 MB.
Anyway I understand, that packaging with separate language packs is a lot of
work.
Thanks for re-packaging lightning with locales after many years of waiting. :-)

[Bug 1647235] Re: Wrong /boot/grub/grub.cfg processed after change of GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR

2020-07-02 Thread UlfZibis
Ubuntu boot loaders (here grubx64.efi), which are signed for secure
boot, internally always refer to grub.cfg in the boot directory
"EFI/ubuntu/" in the EFI system partition. If changed e.g. via hex
editor, the UEFI boot signature check of it will and must fail.

A fix could be to remove the fixation on "EFI/ubuntu/" in grubx64.efi
and instead to detect the belonging "EFI/xxx/grub.cfg" by examination of
it's own location "EFI/xxx/".

TB Printer Options.png

Hi, so as you ask me I will share some "insights".
First, I use Ubuntu 20.04 with the nice Unity desktop environment. Others may
show different.

Almost all views in the TB printer dialogue are perfectly localized to German
with one exception, the advanced tab shows the options in English, and only for
2 of the 3 HP printer drivers I have installed, see screen shot. Also a
different count of options is shown for the 3 drivers, and for the HP PS driver
there is an additional tab "Printer quality".
As far as I guess, the translations and options come from the
/etc/cups/ppd*.ppd files, shipped by the driver. for example, the file for the
HP PS driver has 137 kb whereas the 2 others have only 14 kb. The first
contains several translations, whereas the 2 smaller have only English items.
Don't know from where the translated items in the TB dialogue come from.
The print dialogue for TB and the PDF viewer are the same, so they seem to come
from the OS, but the printer dialogue for LibreOffice looks very different.

Hope that helps!

The upstream bug was marked as invalid, because LibreOffice 6.0 (default in
Ubuntu 18.04) seems out of support.

The document should be saved as ODT (see comment 1) to see the error

[Bug 1773703] Re: wine-stable installs hundreds of amd64 packages on 32-bit System

2018-05-28 Thread UlfZibis
Possible solution:
Installation of wine-stable should not prioritize on _foreign_ architecture.

** Description changed:

- On 64-bit CPU with Lubuntu 32-bit 18.04 with ubuntu-unity-desktop wine-
- stable installs hundreds of amd64 packages (~ 700 MB).

- Additionally wine doesn't work:
- :~$ winecfg
- wine: created the configuration directory '/home/ich/.wine'
- /usr/lib/wine/wineserver: 15: exec: /usr/lib/wine/wineserver64: Exec format
error
- wine: chdir to /tmp/.wine-1000/server-80f-201cd : No such file or directory
+ On Lubuntu 32-bit 18.04 wine-stable installs wine64 with hundreds of other
amd64 packages (~ 700 MB), so wine doesn't work:
+ $ winecfg
+ wine: created the configuration directory '/home/ich/.wine'
+ /usr/lib/wine/wineserver: 15: exec: /usr/lib/wine/wineserver64: Exec format
error
+ wine: chdir to /tmp/.wine-1000/server-80f-201cd : No such file or directory

- Workaround seems to work:
- sudo apt-get install wine32
+ Even passing the architecture explicitly doesn't help:
+ sudo apt-get install wine-stable:i386
+
+ Source of the problem seems to be the foreign amd64 architecture as a
workaround for bug 1648278 which can't be removed:
+ $ dpkg --remove-architecture amd64
+ dpkg: Fehler: Architektur »amd64«, derzeit verwendet von der Datenbank,
kann nicht entfernt werden
+
+ Workaround here:
+   sudo apt-get install wine32
  instead:
- sudo apt-get install wine-stable
+   sudo apt-get install wine-stable

** Summary changed:

- wine-stable installs hundreds of amd64 packages on 32-bit System
+ wine-stable installs wine64 on 32-bit System

[Bug 1648278] Re: Make Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image directly installable on UEFI machine

2018-05-28 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

Only with a workaround I can install Ubuntu 32-bit on a UEFI machine:
  - First install Ubuntu 64-bit on a temporary partition.
  - Then install Ubuntu 32-bit with ubiquity -b
  - Start Ubuntu 64-bit and run update-grub.
  - Start Ubuntu 32-bit.

To make Ubuntu 32-bit update-proof I can run:
  sudo apt install grub-efi-amd64
  sudo mount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
  sudo grub-install --efi-directory /boot/efi --force-extra-removable
After I can delete the temporary Ubuntu 64-bit installation

To make Ubuntu 32-bit again bootable with UEFI secure boot I can additionally
run:
  sudo dpkg --add-architecture amd64
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo dpkg --install
Download/grub-efi-amd64-signed_1.66.2+2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.2_amd64.deb
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed
  sudo grub-install
  sudo apt-get install shim
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure shim
  sudo grub-install

Please make this possible directly with the Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image !

Rationale: The recommended 64-bit Ubuntu and 64-bit applications need up
to 30 % more RAM so the pain of swapping occurs more likely and on UEFI-
- machines with few resources such as Netbooks 64-bit applications perform
- up to 30 % slower than 32-bit applications.
+ machines with few resources such as Netbooks. There 64-bit applications
+ often perform up to 30 % slower than 32-bit applications, e.g.: Firefox.

See also: bug 1650337, bug 1649167

Another WORKAROUND only using the 32-bit Live-image via "Try Ubuntu":

  ubiquity -b

sudo mount /dev/sdaX /mnt # Ubuntu target partition sdaX
  sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi # EFI-partition sda1
  for dir in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount --bind $dir
/mnt/$dir; done
  sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash

  dpkg --add-architecture amd64
  apt-get update
  apt-get install grub-efi-amd64-signed
  Optional: shim-signed
  grub-install [--efi-directory /boot/efi]
  update-grub
  exit

In case of dual boot with Windows,in EFI-setup the boot order must me changed.
Surprisingly, there was a menu entry in NVRAM, even the configuration via
efibootmgr is impossible, caused by missing efivarfs driver in the 32-bit
kernel.

apt-get install grub-efi-amd64-signed, not with grub-efi-amd64.
After failed installation of grub-efi-amd64-signed the GRUB installation of the
1st system was broken, so I couldn't boot anymore and I had to repair Grub via
live-media and chroot.

I still have this problem with current 16.04.

[Bug 1648278] Re: Make Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image directly installable on UEFI machine

2016-12-14 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

Only with a workaround I can install Ubuntu 32-bit on a UEFI machine:
  - First install Ubuntu 64-bit on a temporary partition.
  - Then install Ubuntu 32-bit with ubiquity -b
  - Start Ubuntu 64-bit and run update-grub.
  - Start Ubuntu 32-bit.

To make Ubuntu 32-bit update-proof I can run:
  sudo apt install grub-efi-amd64
  sudo mount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
  sudo grub-install --efi-directory /boot/efi --force-extra-removable
After I can delete the temporary Ubuntu 64-bit installation

To make Ubuntu 32-bit again bootable with UEFI secure boot I can additionally
run:
  sudo dpkg --add-architecture amd64
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo dpkg --install
Download/grub-efi-amd64-signed_1.66.2+2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.2_amd64.deb
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed
  sudo grub-install
  sudo apt-get install shim
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure shim
  sudo grub-install

Please make this possible directly with the Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image !
+
+ Another WORKAROUND only using the 32-bit Live-image:
+
+ ubiquity -b
+
+ sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt # Ubuntu target partition sda7
+ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi # EFI-partition sda1
+ for dir in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount --bind $dir
/mnt/$dir; done
+ sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash
+
+ dpkg --add-architecture amd64
+ apt-get update
+ apt-get install grub-efi-amd64-signed
+ Optional: shim-signed
+ grub-install --efi-directory /boot/efi
+ update-grub
+ exit
+
+ In case of dual boot with Windows,in EFI-setup the boot order must me changed.
+ Surprisingly, there was a menu entry in NVRAM, even the configuration via
efibootmgr is impossible, caused by missing efivarfs driver in the 32-bit kernel

[Bug 1540693]

2016-09-10 Thread UlfZibis
(In reply to Rosanne DiMesio from comment #2)
Thanks Rosanne.
Yes, I thought, it was enough to refer to an outside site, sorry:
https://irfanview-forum.de/showthread.php?t=10523
Especially, because I more assume, this is a IrfanView bug, I prioritized the
discussion there, but unfortunately since today no one tried to compare the
behaviour on native Windows.

Now I can confirm, that the problem is not reproducible on Windows, so
the source of the problem seems to be Wine

[Bug 1692225] [NEW] update-initramfs -u fails with random resume UUID

2017-05-20 Thread UlfZibis
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 16.04 32-bit
In fstab I have:
UUID=38e6603c-6b17-488a-9613-7341e8e89274 none  swapsw  0
0
But I have 2 swap partitions on my hard drive, the other for a 64-bit instance.
With this setting, suspend-to-disk (STD) was functional in ~ 50 % of the cases.
Then I created /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume with:
RESUME=UUID=38e6603c-6b17-488a-9613-7341e8e89274
and did sudo update-initramfs -u -k all.
After this, the STD never worked again. So I extracted
/boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-78-generic and saw the surprising content, different
from the swap-partitions UUID:
RESUME=UUID=93782983-700c-4084-84b1-5e3f8c1e788f
Another try of sudo update-initramfs -u -k all created another random UUID,
both do not match with any partition UUID on my system.

So I recovered my original system back from a backup image and discovered in
conf/conf.d/resume from /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-78-generic:
RESUME=UUID=38e6603c-6b17-488a-9613-7341e8e89274
So originally there was the correct UUID, even I never created a
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume file.

Now I do not have any idea, why sudo update-initramfs -u -k all doesn't
create correct values to make STD always working reliably.

[Bug 1746242] [NEW] Can not choose between different MP3 encoder settings

2018-01-30 Thread UlfZibis
Public bug reported:

I have created 3 additional MP3 LAME encoder settings for CD ripping.

When I want to select one of them, I only see the last added setting in

is always processed with the same last added settings.

Here the concerning settings in ~/.kde/share/config/k3brc

Since Wine on Ububuntu was updated to V 3.0, I could retest with
IrfanView 64 4.50.

Result: I don't see the bug anymore. Thanks for the work.

2016-11-14 Thread UlfZibis
I currently see this bug again on my machine.
Can you provide some tasks to do to find out the cause of the problem. I can
try to hold the state of my machine for some days, using the standby state
instead rebooting it between usage times.

[Bug 1648278] Re: Make Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image directly installable on UEFI machine

2017-03-24 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

Only with a workaround I can install Ubuntu 32-bit on a UEFI machine:
  - First install Ubuntu 64-bit on a temporary partition.
  - Then install Ubuntu 32-bit with ubiquity -b
  - Start Ubuntu 64-bit and run update-grub.
  - Start Ubuntu 32-bit.

To make Ubuntu 32-bit update-proof I can run:
  sudo apt install grub-efi-amd64
  sudo mount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
  sudo grub-install --efi-directory /boot/efi --force-extra-removable
After I can delete the temporary Ubuntu 64-bit installation

To make Ubuntu 32-bit again bootable with UEFI secure boot I can additionally
run:
  sudo dpkg --add-architecture amd64
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo dpkg --install
Download/grub-efi-amd64-signed_1.66.2+2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.2_amd64.deb
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed
  sudo grub-install
  sudo apt-get install shim
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure shim
  sudo grub-install

Please make this possible directly with the Ubuntu 32-bit ISO image !

Rationale: The recommended 64-bit Ubuntu and 64-bit applications need up
to 30 % more RAM so the pain of swapping occurs more likely and on UEFI-
machines with few resources such as Netbooks 64-bit applications perform
up to 30 % slower than 32-bit applications.

+ Another WORKAROUND only using the 32-bit Live-image via "Try Ubuntu":

  ubiquity -b

- sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt # Ubuntu target partition sda7
+ sudo mount /dev/sdaX /mnt # Ubuntu target partition sdaX
  sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi # EFI-partition sda1
  for dir in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount --bind $dir
/mnt/$dir; done
  sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash

  dpkg --add-architecture amd64
  apt-get update
  apt-get install grub-efi-amd64-signed
  Optional: shim-signed
- grub-install --efi-directory /boot/efi
+ grub-install [--efi-directory /boot/efi]
  update-grub
  exit

In case of dual boot with Windows,in EFI-setup the boot order must me changed.
- Surprisingly, there was a menu entry in NVRAM, even the configuration via
efibootmgr is impossible, caused by missing efivarfs driver in the 32-bit kernel

[Bug 1649167] Re: Installation of Ubuntu 32-bit failed on UEFI

2017-03-28 Thread UlfZibis
My concern is, that ubiquity at least should warn the user at the
beginning, instead throwing an error after long time of installing.
