[Bug 334077] [NEW] Powertop reports that mpd is causing very high number of CPU wake ups

2009-02-24 Thread Tom Vetterlein
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mpd

After playing tracks but currently stopped Powertop is reporting ~166
wake ups (i'm not sure over what time period, the default is 10 seconds
but if I manually refresh sooner than that the number is higher still).

This could add up to be a major drain on battery life!

What further information is needed?

Although this doesn't seem to be a problem after an upgrade to Jaunty.

I'll monitor the situation.

[Bug 190258] Re: [Hardy] ThinkVantage key no longer working

2008-05-13 Thread Tom Vetterlein
It shouldn't be too difficult to fix, you would just need to insert the
appropriate acpi_fakekey command in:

/etc/acpi/thinkpad-thinkpad.sh

I think the Thinkvantage key is supposed to map to 0xf9, I've no idea
which acpi_fakekey number this is so I'm just using

acpi_fakekey 155

which seems to work.

That's what I'm using for a workaround anyway.

I just don't have the skills/time to learn how to do it myself at the
moment.

2.6.27-11.23 had working brightness controls for me on my Lenovo R61

2.6.27-11.24 does not sadly. The controls don't function at all.

2.6.27-11.22 did not work either. Again the controls did not function at
all.

as far as I can remember kernel 2.6.27-11.21 and kernels prior to that
were fine.

[Bug 337281] [NEW] Wishlist: Less verbose, more casual user orientated NTFS error messages

2009-03-03 Thread Tom Vetterlein
Public bug reported:

This blog posting was recently brought to my attention:

http://jguk.org/2009/03/ubuntu-usb-ntfs-filesystem-bugs.html

Despite having no knowledge of this bug first hand (I don't use NTFS at
all anymore) I'm pretty sure that the casual user will not know what
this message means or what the problem is or indeed how to fix it from
the information contained in this message.

I think that the message could be easier to read and possibly link to
some information detailing the actual cause of the problem (ie uncleanly
unmounting a thumb drive or whatever) and how to avoid it in future.

I'm therefore submitting it to the wish list for others to ponder.

I've attached the screen shot from the blog in case that link dies.

Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
aborting...

When I resume though the suspend light is constantly flashing and a
bubble pops up saying that suspend fails and would I like to visit the
quirks website.

Suspend and resume seem to work fine though, wireless and sound both
come back on correctly and a cursory examination of the logs doesn't
reveal anything particularly awry.

Running a Thinkpad R61 with fully up to date Gutsy.

[Bug 190258] [NEW] [Hardy] ThinkVantage key no longer working

2008-02-08 Thread Tom Vetterlein
Public bug reported:

Since the upgrade to the kernel the ThinkVantage key no longer seems to
work.

It is assigned to open Rhythmbox and is still showing up as being
assigned but pressing the key does nothing. I have tried mapping it to
do other things but it doesn't even register that a key has been
pressed.

I am running up to date Hardy here, upgraded from Gutsy but have checked
to see if it works with the latest live cd and it does not.

I have tried manually and automatically loading thinkpad_acpi but it
doesn't seem to make any difference.

All the other hot keys seem to work fine.

I am running a Lenovo R61.

Do I need to provide any more information?

[Bug 190258] Re: [Hardy] ThinkVantage key no longer working

2008-02-15 Thread Tom Vetterlein
Hi

I will do that asap, I have a batch encoding job running at the mo
though so it might be a little while.

Installed the new kernel earlier. I tried a quick test but my ad-hoc
ACPI hack seems to be overriding the thinkpad_acpi module (if that is
indeed what is responsible for mapping the Thinkwiki key) so I'll try
and reverse that when I get a bit of spare time.

It's all a little confusing, there seems to be several different ways to
assign a function to a key. I don't know enough about thinkpad_acpi to
know if it was really that that was at fault or something to do with
ACPI.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
