2010-04-19 Thread Tom Gelinas
I meant that it worked when I passed acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable , this
laptop was not blacklisted. I typo'd on my last post, it's a T510 4313
and I posted my dmidecode.log to this bug. I removed some information
like serial numbers and some stuff I thought related to Intel AMT and
TPM, so please let me know if you need any more info.

Lanoxx, please look 1 post above yours, which refers to the bug report

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
Has anyone used this on Debian with absolutely no issues?

My understanding is that gpointing-device-settings has a plugin for
gnome settings daemon

Interesting settings can be found with gconf-editor at /apps/gnome/peripherals
. The priority for loading plugins is found at
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/pointing-device and also in the keys of
other plugins.

It seems that gpointing-device-settings stores settings in a way that conflicts
with gnome's regular configuration, ie. it uses different keys to store the
same settings, or it stores a setting in a way that affects many other
gnome-native settings. gpointing-device settings stores settings in
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/sy...@47@2...@32@synapt...@32@TouchPad , while gnome
stores them at /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad . I suppose it becomes a
little complicated with the trackpoint, since gnome probably sees it as just
another mouse.

Maybe we should play with the priority of these gnome-settings-daemon plugins.

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
Additionally, /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings has a list of
keybinds (obv.) and XF86TouchpadToggle is only listed there, nowhere
else in gconf. Before installing gpointing-device-settings,
XF86TouchpadToggle would toggle the touchpad and display a notification
using notify-osd. This broken after installing gpointing-device-
settings, and I can't get it back after uninstallng it. I suppose this
is a per-user issue, but I haven't found a configuration file in my home
folder or gconf a key that would cause this.

Has gpointing-device-settings ever worked in perfect harmony with gnome,
or has it always been a little wonky? The method it uses for storing in
gconf seems a little weird, but I think these "priorities" settings at
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins will allow us to find workarounds
here. Please report back if you get something working!

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
I'm using Debian's 1.5.1, but using gconf-editor to set
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/pointing-device/priority to 8 and
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/mouse to 9 has allowed gpointing-
device-settings to have precedence over gnome's default mouse settings
app. Settings are now persistent.

I still haven't gotten XF86TouchpadToggle to work, i've tried setting
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/keybindings to 7, tried disabling the
gpointing-device-settings plugin, and tried uninstalling libgpds and
gpointing-device-settings. Nothing worked. I'd really appreciate it if someone
could explain how the XF86TouchpadToggle binding works by default in Ubuntu
Lucid.

Hopefully this solution is reproducible!

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
jilgoosbee, are you able to use the XF86TouchpadToggle (FN+F8) when
using gpoining-device-settings? Are you able to disable the trackpad in
gpointing-device-settings and have the setting persist?

gpointing-device-settings and gnome-mouse-properties (Gnome's default mouse
preferences app) have 2 different methods/gconf keys they use for disabling
scrolling or the touchpad. gpointing-device-settings uses
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/sy...@47@2...@32@synapt...@32@TouchPad/off , which
can be set as 0 for On with tapping and scrolling, 1 with tapping and scrolling
disabled and 2 with the entire touchpad disabled. gpointing-device-settings
also has separate keys for toggling vertical/horizontal scrolling and tapping.
| gnome-mouse-properties uses
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled to disable the touchpad
(which I assume is bound to XF86TouchpadToggle because there is no option to
disable the touchpad in gnome-mouse-properties). It also has its own separate
keys for toggling scrolling/tapping.

How can these conflicting settings be reconciled? Is this really what
these "priorities" settings at /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins are
meant to do? If so, it seems it only happens at load-time, but gnome-
mouse-properties tries to reassert control over these functions at
certain times.

Also, you say your scroll settings are persistent. I bet this is because
you haven't set anything in gpointing-device-settings that conflicts
with gnome-mouse-properties, ie. you haven't disabled horizontal
scrolling in gpointing, but enabled it in gnome, or something similar.

Sorry if I was hasty with that, I reverted it. In Bug 489830 the
settings are still shown in gpointing, they just are inconsistently/non-

Lucid, or did it stop working as soon as you upgraded from Karmic? Do
you have trackpad scrolling enabled in gnome-mouse-properties aka
System->Preferences->Mouse Preferences?

You should try making a new user account using System-> Administration

[Bug 577250] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon XF86TouchpadToggle actions do not work when gpointing-device-settings is installed

2010-05-07 Thread Tom Gelinas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gpointing-device-settings

By default, Ubuntu will disable touchpads via gnome-settings-daemon when
XF86TouchpadToggle (Fn+F8 on ThinkPads) is pressed, and this is
accompanied by a notify-osd notification. This no longer functions when
gpointing-device-settings is installed, and the functionality does not
return when gpointing is uninstalled. This occurs with gpointing-device-
settings 1.3.2 and Debian's 1.5.1 package.

Gconf key /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled is
normally toggled by XF86TouchpadToggle. The touchpad can always be
toggled by using this gconf key, but the keyboard button that
corresponds to XF86TouchpadToggle does not function on machines that had
at some point installed gpointing-device-settings.

I don't know if this is a bug of gpointing or gnome-settings-daemon.

[Bug 522982] Re: No Sound on Lenovo W510 / T510

2010-02-25 Thread Tom Gelinas
That's encouraging, at least it isn't entirely broken!
I don't have Windows installed anymore, but there is a feature of the Windows
driver that is worth investigating.
There's that Connextant sound options application, which lets you determine how
the headphone switch is used.
It's possible to configure the system to use both speakers and minijack stereo
out. Because this headphone jack sensing is handled in software, you should
poke around in that connextant applet: try disabling and re-enabling the
settings pertaining to those features.

This isn't exactly scientific, but I think there's good reason to consider this.
Similar issues sometimes happen with WiFi chipsets, where a user reports that
WiFi does not work in Windows after having booted Linux. This occurs because
the driver loads some firmware/microcode or whatever. A hard reobot of the
computer (ie. The computer and chip no longer recieve power) as opposed to a
soft reboot (reboot from software) will generally solve these problems.

I bet this is just an issue with the headphone jack sensing, or your speakers
are blown.
Can you guys still use the microphone?

I confirm this bug on my thinkpad T510.
A workaround is to change brightness in text-mode VT (ie. crtl+alt+f1, change

The lack of OSD is a new development since 26/02, I think it requires a

[Bug 562005] [NEW] Backlight brightness on ThinkPad T510 can only be changed in Text Mode, not X

2010-04-12 Thread Tom Gelinas
Public bug reported:

The brightness controls on this laptop with NVS 3100m work while running
Nouveau or when using a text mode VT, but not while running X and using
proprietary NVIDIA drivers. About 3 weeks ago it was possible to force
the nvidia driver to control the backlight by adding [Option
"RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"] to the "Devices" section
of xorg.conf . While this allowed the backlight to be controlled, the
increments were inconsistent and resulted in a buzzing noise from the
LED backlight. Since this did not occur while running nouveau or when
switching in text VT, something was wrong.

However, adding this option to xorg.conf no longer works. I believe this
is some type of regression. The ideal solution would be to apply the
backlight control method used by text VTs to X, because it would work
around this regression AND prevent the possibly hardware-damaging
electrical issues caused by the proprietary nvidia driver's forced
backlight controls (which are not enabled by default).

This bad backlight behaviour has been confirmed on ThinkPad models T510
and W510 via http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T510 , and I
mentioned it to a developer on the nvnews.net forums.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers

2010-04-15 Thread Tom Gelinas
I can now force the nvidia driver to control the backlight. I don't know
why it didn't work before, I did 2 hard reboots and the setting didn't
take effect. Regardless, the nvidia's backlight controller is still less
effective than the one used by nouveau or in a text mode VT. The nvidia
driver's backlight control should not be force-enabled by default
because it changes the brightness in inconsistent increments and causes
a buzzing noise to emanate from the LED backlight. This noise is at
different frequencies according the the level of brightness, and
sometimes ceases for a fraction of a second while the backlight is
changing from one brightness level to another. Is there anything I can
do to give a comparison of the brightness levels passed by nouveau
driver or in a text mode VT? I'd assume there is something in Sysfs.

What is the difference between how a text mode VT or nouveau change the
backlight brightness, compared with how nvidia does it? Gnome should be
forced to use a non-nvidia method by default.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers

2010-04-15 Thread Tom Gelinas
I have no idea how to effectively monitor changes in /sysfs. The best
method i'm using is to use "tree" to map out Sysfs, and then search for
interesting things and monitor them. If someone could please share a
better method i'd be very appreciative.

I have not found if there is a difference in sysfs between
The hardware brightness buttons on this laptop always affect
/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness. If change the brightness
while running X, /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is
changed but the actual backlight is not affected. If I then switch to a text
mode VT and press the backlight up button,
/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is increased by 1 and the
backlight is set to that level. This level will persist when I switch back to
X.

Nouveau makes a symlink called nv_backlight at /sys/class/backlight,
which links to
sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/backlight/nv_backlight,
so I suppose that it is not possible to use nouveau's backlight controls
with the nvidia driver.

/sys/module/video/parameters/brightness_switch_enabled is always set Y when
using either nouveau or nvidia.

It seems that the only solutions for backlight control on this laptop are
either to force the nvidia driver to control the backlight, or use the text
mode VT's method in X. LED backlights don't have inverters, so I'd think that
they shouldnt be producing a buzzing/humming noise. I think it's a very bad
idea to force the nvidia driver to control this backlight by default because it
may result in physical hardware damage.

[Bug 508754] Re: Trackpoint settings for wheel emulation in gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2010-04-11 Thread Tom Gelinas
In fact the Debian packages aren't able to persistently disable the
trackpad. I don't yet know what causes this, but trackpoint wheel
emulation settings are persistently applied.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2010-05-30 Thread Tom Gelinas
NVIDIA's 256.29 beta driver is available from this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates .
The issue is not solved, and I didn't expect it to be. Again, the bugs for both
NVS *100m series and FX 880M have been reported to the NVIDIA developers @
nvnews.net, the links to those threads are in the description of this bug (bug
562005).

** Description changed:

The brightness controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M or Quadro FX
880M GPUs work while running Nouveau or when using a text mode VT, but
not while running X and using proprietary NVIDIA drivers. It is
possible to force the NVIDIA driver to control the backlight by adding
[Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"] to the "Devices"
section of xorg.conf . While this allows the backlight to be controlled,
the increments are inconsistent and often result in a buzzing noise from
the LED backlight on Lenovo ThinkPad T510s and W510s. Since this did not
occur while running nouveau or when switching in text VT, something is
  wrong.

This bad backlight behaviour has been confirmed on ThinkPad models T510 and
W510 with NVIDIA NVS 3100m and Quadro FX 880M chipsets, respectively, via
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T510
- The issue is discussed on the nvnews.net forums at
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=145105 and
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=150069 . An NVIDIA developer
has said he will investigate the issue.
+ Because this issue is related to NVIDIA's proprietary video driver, this
issue can only be solved by them. An NVIDIA developer has said he will
investigate the issues, which are discussed on the nvnews.net forums at
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=145105 and
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=150069 . For future reference,
the latest NVIDIA drivers can be found in the Ubuntu X-Swat X updates PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

- However, adding this option to xorg.conf no longer works. I believe this
- is some type of regression. The ideal solution would be to apply the
- backlight control method used by text VTs to X, because it would work
- around this regression AND prevent the possibly hardware-damaging
- electrical issues caused by the proprietary nvidia driver's forced
- backlight controls (which are not enabled by default).

lshal output seems to be identical when the nvidia driver is forced to
control the backlight. I agree, the nvidia driver is probably passing
the wrong number of brightness levels. Thanks for the link to bug 7779,
i'll play around wth that script later.

Yes that definitely works, un-setting "disable touchpad when typing"

Thanks! This was actually listed on the gpointing-device-settings

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2010-05-24 Thread Tom Gelinas
Delyan, are you able to force the NVIDIA proprietary driver to control
the backlight? You can do this by adding

Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1

to the "Devices" section of xorg.conf and then restarting. Also, does
your backlight emit a buzz or humming noise when the brightness has been
changed using the NVIDIA drivers?

2010-03-06 Thread Tom Gelinas
I confirm this behavior on my t510 4313 with nVidia nvs3100m discrete graphics.
However, my second resume shows the Lenovo BIOS splash indefinitely.

I filed a similar bug last month:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/519375 , post 11
has logs from similar methodology. I will test again with the latest
Ubuntu and mainline kernels.

2010-03-26 Thread Tom Gelinas
Ah and an explanation: I booted using notsc, irqpoll and text. The
system failed to sleep a second time, the screen never turned off and
the system never entered sleep (ie. no blinking power light) This is
possibly an nVidia specific behaviour, though.

[Bug 1759286] Re: Thunderbird shows large overlay emojis whilst downloading mail

2018-04-12 Thread Tom Gelinas
It's still a brutal rendering bug for usability. We shouldn't have to
use a PPA for the rest of the beta cycle, the Ubuntu release packages
need bug reports. If Canonical wants people to do proper testing, issues
like this are a major hindrance. Giant emojis on top of my email make me
take the beta out of my workflow. Otherwise it's looking fine, but
really this is worth updating the current package for.

[Bug 1138577] Re: banshee-extension-streamrecorder hangs banshee on startup

2013-09-05 Thread Tom Gelinas
Does merely installing this package cause banshee to hang, or must the
extension be enabled first? It is not installed by default, but neither
is Banshee. If this bug isn't solved, the package should be removed from
repositories, it is a serious usability problem. I'll test this later
this week.

Has anyone reproduced this on another distribution?

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2010-12-03 Thread Tom Gelinas
I've bumped the "bug report" at nvnews.net repeatedly and have done so
again today. The lack of formality with regard to NVIDIA bug reports is
very irritating!

[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent

2014-06-08 Thread Tom Gelinas
Zwylicht, thanks for the information, I will definitely use that for
fine-tuning.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks
X.Org settings are easily set with "Quirks", which can be distributed with
Ubuntu. Simply submit a patch and explain the reason. For examples, please see
the files @ /usr/share/ubuntu-drivers-common/quirks/ .

Touchpads definitely need some extra configuration in the Linux
environment, we need to properly document these "quirks".

[Bug 996741] Re: CanoScan LiDe 210: Sane scans black pages (scan light stays off)

2013-02-25 Thread Tom Gelinas
This scanner is powered by USB. It's likely that your setup is not
supplying enough current. Try removing any USB hubs in between, or try
it on another piece of hardware.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2012-10-18 Thread Tom Gelinas
Not to say that /etc/X11/xorg.conf has been deprecated, but: The X11
"Quirks" files are a quick way to fix backlight control issues. I have
smashed/replaced my LCD panel since reporting this bug, and no longer
hear a buzzing noise when changing brightness while forcing the
proprietary NVIDIA driver to control brightness.

For X11 quirk-related documentation, please read /usr/share/ubuntu-
drivers-common/quirks/lenovo_thinkpad , and also
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks .

You can make a new quirk file that applies to your laptop. This sucks,
but anyone can submit a patch. (Bad answer). Good luck!
