[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent
Has anyone used this on Debian with absolutely no issues? My understanding is that gpointing-device-settings has a plugin for gnome settings daemon Interesting settings can be found with gconf-editor at /apps/gnome/peripherals . The priority for loading plugins is found at /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/pointing-device and also in the keys of other plugins. It seems that gpointing-device-settings stores settings in a way that conflicts with gnome's regular configuration, ie. it uses different keys to store the same settings, or it stores a setting in a way that affects many other gnome-native settings. gpointing-device settings stores settings in /desktop/gnome/peripherals/sy...@47@2...@32@synapt...@32@TouchPad , while gnome stores them at /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad . I suppose it becomes a little complicated with the trackpoint, since gnome probably sees it as just another mouse. Maybe we should play with the priority of these gnome-settings-daemon plugins. -- Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489830 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent
Additionally, /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings has a list of keybinds (obv.) and XF86TouchpadToggle is only listed there, nowhere else in gconf. Before installing gpointing-device-settings, XF86TouchpadToggle would toggle the touchpad and display a notification using notify-osd. This broken after installing gpointing-device- settings, and I can't get it back after uninstallng it. I suppose this is a per-user issue, but I haven't found a configuration file in my home folder or gconf a key that would cause this. Has gpointing-device-settings ever worked in perfect harmony with gnome, or has it always been a little wonky? The method it uses for storing in gconf seems a little weird, but I think these "priorities" settings at /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins will allow us to find workarounds here. [Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent
I'm using Debian's 1.5.1, but using gconf-editor to set /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/pointing-device/priority to 8 and /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/mouse to 9 has allowed gpointing- device-settings to have precedence over gnome's default mouse settings app. Settings are now persistent. I still haven't gotten XF86TouchpadToggle to work, i've tried setting /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/keybindings to 7, tried disabling the gpointing-device-settings plugin, and tried uninstalling libgpds and gpointing-device-settings. [Bug 489830] Re: Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent
jilgoosbee, are you able to use the XF86TouchpadToggle (FN+F8) when using gpoining-device-settings? Are you able to disable the trackpad in gpointing-device-settings and have the setting persist? gpointing-device-settings and gnome-mouse-properties (Gnome's default mouse preferences app) have 2 different methods/gconf keys they use for disabling scrolling or the touchpad. gpointing-device-settings uses /desktop/gnome/peripherals/sy...@47@2...@32@synapt...@32@TouchPad/off , which can be set as 0 for On with tapping and scrolling, 1 with tapping and scrolling disabled and 2 with the entire touchpad disabled. gpointing-device-settings also has separate keys for toggling vertical/horizontal scrolling and tapping. | gnome-mouse-properties uses /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled to disable the touchpad (which I assume is bound to XF86TouchpadToggle because there is no option to disable the touchpad in gnome-mouse-properties). It also has its own separate keys for toggling scrolling/tapping. How can these conflicting settings be reconciled? Is this really what these "priorities" settings at /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins are meant to do? If so, it seems it only happens at load-time, but gnome- mouse-properties tries to reassert control over these functions at certain times. -- Settings of gpointing-device-settings are non-persistent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489830 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 522982] Re: No Sound on Lenovo W510 / T510
That's encouraging, at least it isn't entirely broken! I don't have Windows installed anymore, but there is a feature of the Windows driver that is worth investigating. There's that Connextant sound options application, which lets you determine how the headphone switch is used. It's possible to configure the system to use both speakers and minijack stereo out. Because this headphone jack sensing is handled in software, you should poke around in that connextant applet: try disabling and re-enabling the settings pertaining to those features. This isn't exactly scientific, but I think there's good reason to consider this. Similar issues sometimes happen with WiFi chipsets, where a user reports that WiFi does not work in Windows after having booted Linux. This occurs because the driver loads some firmware/microcode or whatever. A hard reobot of the computer (ie. The computer and chip no longer recieve power) as opposed to a soft reboot (reboot from software) will generally solve these problems. I bet this is just an issue with the headphone jack sensing, or your speakers are blown. [Bug 562005] [NEW] Backlight brightness on ThinkPad T510 can only be changed in Text Mode, not X
Public bug reported: The brightness controls on this laptop with NVS 3100m work while running Nouveau or when using a text mode VT, but not while running X and using proprietary NVIDIA drivers. About 3 weeks ago it was possible to force the nvidia driver to control the backlight by adding [Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"] to the "Devices" section of xorg.conf . While this allowed the backlight to be controlled, the increments were inconsistent and resulted in a buzzing noise from the LED backlight. Since this did not occur while running nouveau or when switching in text VT, something was wrong. However, adding this option to xorg.conf no longer works. I believe this is some type of regression. The ideal solution would be to apply the backlight control method used by text VTs to X, because it would work around this regression AND prevent the possibly hardware-damaging electrical issues caused by the proprietary nvidia driver's forced backlight controls (which are not enabled by default). This bad backlight behaviour has been confirmed on ThinkPad models T510 and W510 via http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T510 , and I mentioned it to a developer on the nvnews.net forums. [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers
I can now force the nvidia driver to control the backlight. I don't know why it didn't work before, I did 2 hard reboots and the setting didn't take effect. Regardless, the nvidia's backlight controller is still less effective than the one used by nouveau or in a text mode VT. The nvidia driver's backlight control should not be force-enabled by default because it changes the brightness in inconsistent increments and causes a buzzing noise to emanate from the LED backlight. This noise is at different frequencies according the the level of brightness, and sometimes ceases for a fraction of a second while the backlight is changing from one brightness level to another. Is there anything I can do to give a comparison of the brightness levels passed by nouveau driver or in a text mode VT? I'd assume there is something in Sysfs. What is the difference between how a text mode VT or nouveau change the backlight brightness, compared with how nvidia does it? Gnome should be forced to use a non-nvidia method by default. -- Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562005 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers
I have no idea how to effectively monitor changes in /sysfs. The best method i'm using is to use "tree" to map out Sysfs, and then search for interesting things and monitor them. If someone could please share a better method i'd be very appreciative. I have not found if there is a difference in sysfs between The hardware brightness buttons on this laptop always affect /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness. If change the brightness while running X, /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is changed but the actual backlight is not affected. If I then switch to a text mode VT and press the backlight up button, /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is increased by 1 and the backlight is set to that level. This level will persist when I switch back to X. Nouveau makes a symlink called nv_backlight at /sys/class/backlight, which links to sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/backlight/nv_backlight, so I suppose that it is not possible to use nouveau's backlight controls with the nvidia driver. /sys/module/video/parameters/brightness_switch_enabled is always set Y when using either nouveau or nvidia. It seems that the only solutions for backlight control on this laptop are either to force the nvidia driver to control the backlight, or use the text mode VT's method in X. LED backlights don't have inverters, so I'd think that they shouldnt be producing a buzzing/humming noise. I think it's a very bad idea to force the nvidia driver to control this backlight by default because it may result in physical hardware damage. -- Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562005 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers
NVIDIA's 256.29 beta driver is available from this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates . The issue is not solved, and I didn't expect it to be. Again, the bugs for both NVS *100m series and FX 880M have been reported to the NVIDIA developers @ nvnews.net, the links to those threads are in the description of this bug (bug 562005). ** Description changed: The brightness controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M or Quadro FX 880M GPUs work while running Nouveau or when using a text mode VT, but not while running X and using proprietary NVIDIA drivers. It is possible to force the NVIDIA driver to control the backlight by adding [Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"] to the "Devices" section of xorg.conf . While this allows the backlight to be controlled, the increments are inconsistent and often result in a buzzing noise from the LED backlight on Lenovo ThinkPad T510s and W510s. Since this did not occur while running nouveau or when switching in text VT, something is wrong. [Bug 1759286] Re: Thunderbird shows large overlay emojis whilst downloading mail
It's still a brutal rendering bug for usability. We shouldn't have to use a PPA for the rest of the beta cycle, the Ubuntu release packages need bug reports. Not to say that /etc/X11/xorg.conf has been deprecated, but: The X11 "Quirks" files are a quick way to fix backlight control issues. I have smashed/replaced my LCD panel since reporting this bug, and no longer hear a buzzing noise when changing brightness while forcing the proprietary NVIDIA driver to control brightness. For X11 quirk-related documentation, please read /usr/share/ubuntu- drivers-common/quirks/lenovo_thinkpad , and also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks .
