[Bug 279187] Re: regression: usplash causes system to beep and hang

2008-10-08 Thread Stefan Krause
Yes it's absolutely the same case, I think I get the same messages on my
screen. What laptop do you own?
Maybe you also could also attach the files mentioned on
https://wiki.edubuntu.org/DebuggingUsplash (though I've seen the issue with
ubuntu und kubuntu)

[Bug 279187] [NEW] regression: usplash causes system to beep and hang

2008-10-06 Thread Stefan Krause
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libusplash0

On my laptop (a HP hdx 9400) 8.04 x86 and x86_64 boot fine with splash enabled.
With 8.10 (tested against alpha 2 - beta) I'm unable to boot either the live
cd or the installed version unless I modify the kernel parameters. The system
starts to beep until it beeps continuously. I don't think it would continue to
boot but my nerves prohibit waiting longer than 20 seconds with that sound.
This happens so early that no log file in /var/log is written yet.
If I change the parameters such that splash is not used (e.g adding vga=3
noquiet and remove splash option 8.10 boots fine) .

[Bug 320798] [NEW] [jaunty regression] no sound with hp laptop and HDA intel

2009-01-24 Thread Stefan Krause
Public bug reported:

Sound used to work with 8.04 and 8.10 (usually after unmuting a channel), but I
can't get jaunty alpha 3 to play any sound.
The hardware is a hp hdx9480 laptop with a Intel HDA chipset. (tIntel [HDA
Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog])
I checked all channels with alsamixer and alsamixer -D hw:0 and I can't find
any muted channel.

Other information:

s...@hape:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xec004000 irq 23

I tried to check whether sound works with aplay
/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav. It reports no errors and the volume
bar in pavucontrol shows that music is playing.

[Bug 279187] Re: regression: usplash causes system to beep aloud

2009-01-24 Thread Stefan Krause
Januty alpha 3 has the same problem. As a workaround it seems that
changing the boot option splash to nosplash avoids the situation, but
since it doesn't happen always (I had it with alpha 3 with the noquiet
and splash option) it's maybe just a timing problem and not directly
splah related problem.

[Bug 320798] Re: [jaunty regression] No sound with HDA intel

2009-02-15 Thread Stefan Krause
Thanks to https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4262 (Click on
"Guest login (view only) is also available" to actually view the issue) I have
sound back. The solution was to set the model in /etc/modprobe.d/options:
options snd-hda-intel model=5stack

Now the question is: Close the bug or leave it open (because sound
should work after a standard installation)?

2009-02-06 Thread Stefan Krause
I've attached the alsa-info output for my Fedora 10 copy. Sound works
perfectly fine on that distro. And I decided to do a fresh install for
Januty Alpha 4. Some channels were muted, but even after unmuting I get
no sound.

I tried to diff the alsa-info output between F10 and Jaunty, but I can't
make any sense of the differences.

[Bug 410984] [NEW] Regression: HP hdx 9300 often hangs on boot with acpi enabled

2009-08-09 Thread Stefan Krause
Public bug reported:

My laptop, a hp hdx 9300, often doesn't boot with Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 Alpha 3
(64 bit). This is a regression, since it worked (albeit with some quirks) okay
on 9.04 and 8.10 (it had a beeping problem that was solved for me when I
removed the quiet option from the boot options. see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/279187)
Both the live cd and the installed OS hang on boot pretty often (say 3 of 4
attempts). With the quiet options it might even be more often (I didn't gather
reliable statistical data). The only remedy is to shut down the laptop then,
ctrl + alt +del is ignored.

When I use acpi=off or acpi=noirq I can boot into alpha 3, but of course
I want to have full power management (I'm currently running Fedora 11
without any of these problems).

I'm attaching a screenshot of the messages (the hang happens so early that no
log file is written) and a lscpi-dump from Fedorra 11.

2009-08-12 Thread Stefan Krause
Hi Leann,

three out of four boot attempts failed with 2.6.31-5 (the first sucessful boot
attempt was even with splash quiet, the second failed with the same options,
and the third and fourth failed with quite and without a splash option).
I've attached a screenshot of the messages.
I'll try to run the mainline kernel tomorrow (I'm afraid to say I'm a bit busy

Ok - I decided in favor of 9.10 and go to sleep later.

vmlinuz-2.6.31-020631rc5-generic has the same issue. With the standard
options "splash quiet" it shows now two error messages (DSC00062), but
those messages are not the last when I hang without splash and noquiet
(DSC00063).

[Bug 407790] [NEW] [Regression] No sound with Karmic on HP HDX 9300

2009-08-01 Thread Stefan Krause
Public bug reported:

Sound worked without further configuration on Ubuntu 8.10. With Ubuntu
9.04 (also with recent Suse and Fedora versions) I had to add a model
parameter to the modprobe.d/*.conf file. I used model=5stack and was
happy with sound an 9.04. The current karmic version gives me no sound
on the internal speakers for all configurations I tried (3stack, 5stack,
6stack and hp-hdx). The headphone is currently working, but no other
speaker.

This bug could be related to 400682, but it is a slightly different
notebook and sound card.

[Bug 550382] [NEW] [Regression] System freezes often during booting

2010-03-28 Thread Stefan Krause
Public bug reported:

My laptop used to boot fine with karmic 32bit. I boot it a few times a day and
haven't noticed any problems.
I installed lucid when it was at Alpha 2 and used it daily since then. About a
week ago I got random freezes during booting. (Certainly with 2.6.32-17, I'm
not sure about 2.6.32-16).

I confirmed that upstream 2.6.33-020633-generic has the same problem.

Please note that I had the same issues for the 64 bit version since
karmic(!), but the 32 bit version worked nicely, so I thought it was a
64 bit issue. Switching to 32 bit was an acceptable workaround, but now
that the 32 bit doesn't boot most of the time I'm close to desperation
(since it means I must switch back to Windows after 7 years...).

The last line printed on the screen is:
[0.529300] ata_piix :00:1f.1: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16

After that the system can only be powered off, rebooting is not
possible.

I'd say that the system freezes with a probability of about 50-75%.

** Description changed:

My laptop used to boot fine with karmic 32bit. I boot it a few times a day
and haven't noticed any problems.
I installed lucid when it was at Alpha 2 and used it daily since then. About
a week ago I got random freezes during booting.

Screenshot when system is frozen added.

Comparing to a dmesg output of a successful boot I fail to see much difference.
All in all I found 4 lines that appear to be missing in the screenshot:

[0.499021] Monitor-Mwait will be used to enter C-2 state
[0.499041] Monitor-Mwait will be used to enter C-3 state

[Bug 550382] Re: [Regression] System freezes often during booting

2010-03-29 Thread Stefan Krause
I checked again. Here are my findings:

Out of 5 attempts lucid booted 2 times successfully with 2.6.32-17 and froze 3
times with that version.
Lucid booted 8 times successfully with 2.6.32-16 (2.6.32-16-generic #25-Ubuntu
SMP Tue Mar 9 16:33:52 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux) and no freezes could be observed

I'm pretty sure that the regression was introduced with -17.

I'll attach the dmesg for -16 and -17 and the diff (after timing output
has been removed).

The one difference I could find is that -16 prints something like
 scsi0 : ahci
 scsi1 : ahci
 scsi2 : ahci
 ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m2...@0xec009000 port 0xec009100 irq 31
 ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m2...@0xec009000 port 0xec009180 irq 31
 ata3: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m2...@0xec009000 port 0xec009200 irq 31

and -17 prints
  scsi0 : ata_piix
 scsi1 : ata_piix
 ata1: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x1f0 ctl 0x3f6 bmdma 0x70a0 irq 14
 ata2: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0x70a8 irq 15

Since the ata_piix message has as far as I remember always been the last
line I suspect that the issue could have to do with that output.

What can I check next?

[Bug 434163] [NEW] [Pot. regression] display brightness is darkened after gdm starts

2009-09-21 Thread Stefan Krause
Public bug reported:

(This might be a duplicate of #433889, but I'm under the impression you
prefer to get get separate bug reports).

I'm running into the following problem on my laptop (HP hdx 9300 with Geforce
8800M GTS and 190.32 binary drivers):
GDM starts and displays the login screen. At some point in time the display's
brightness will be turned down (sometimes a few seconds after GDM started,
sometimes when my X session starts) such that the display is completely dark.
This happens when I'm running on AC as well as on battery.
I haven't had this problem on any ubuntu version since 8.04 except for karmic.
My Fedora 11 installation was recently updated to Kernel 2.6.30 and has now the
same problem.

The workaround for me it to switch to a console with crtl + alt + f2 and
then switch back to X. The display's brightness is then up to 100%
again.

(Please note that brightness control has never worked correctly on my
laptop. I had some success with writing directly to
/proc/acpi/video/C150/C164/brightness, but values smaller than 58 (or
so) led to a flickering screen.)

[Bug 550382] Re: [Regression] System freezes often during booting

2010-04-07 Thread Stefan Krause
Compiled a few kernels and played with the options.
Even a minimal configuration with "Intel ESB, ICH, PIIX3, PIIX4 PATA/SATA
support (ATA_PIIX)" enabled (the only other selected option is "AHCI SATA
support") leads to the freezes.
If I remove the ATA_PIIX option booting appears to work (5 times without
problems), but my blureay/dvd-drive is not recognized or prints lots of errors
in dmesg ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED))

What's the next thing I should do?

Lucid doesn't have this issue for me. Brightness is always on full level
(both for nvidia and nouveau), so you might close that bug.

[Bug 550382] Re: [Regression] System freezes often during booting

2010-04-02 Thread Stefan Krause
Some more notes:
I compiled both kernel 2.6.34-rc2 and 2.6.32.10 with make oldconfig based on
the linux-image-2.6.32-16, but that didn't help. It freezes about half the time
when booting.

OpenSuse 11.3 M4 (kernel-2.6.33) on the other hand boots without
problems.

Any idea what I could try next?

[Bug 533495] [NEW] opengl performance regression with compiz

2010-03-06 Thread Stefan Krause
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

OpenGL performance is much worse with Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3 than with 9.04 when
using compiz (i.e. visual effects are turned on) in windowed mode.
I found that for some demo I've built Ubuntu 9.04 was about 27% faster and
confirmed those findings with the unigine benchmark.

Here are the number for the Unigine_Tropics-1.2 (windowed_1024x768.sh, default
settings):
10.04 With Effects Turned On: 27.9796 FPS
9.10 With Effects Turned On: 32.0972 FPS

I think the problem is due to compiz because if I disable all visual effects
the performance is pretty much equal for 9.10 and 10.04:
10.04 Without Effects Turned On: 34.4443 FPS
9.10 Without Effects Turned On: 34.794 FPS
(The same is true for my own program)

As clearly can be demonstrated by those numbers metacity performs
equally, but compiz got much slower for 10.04 Alpha 3.

I'm using the same nvidia driver release 195.36.08 (yes that's the hot
one ;-) on both systems. The driver settings regarding quality, vsync
etc. are equal.

Please let me know if you need further details.

[Bug 410984] Re: Regression: HP hdx 9300 often hangs on boot with acpi enabled

2009-10-07 Thread Stefan Krause
I tried 2.6.31-12 and it hang the second time when I booted without any
options. Adding "nousb" seems not to help. It halted with the message
sata_sil24 :20:00.0 PCI INT A -> GSI (level, low) -> IRQ 19

Don't know if it matters: The last message before the system hangs is
always IRQ related, most of the time SATA or ATA related.

I also reported this bug on kernel.org (
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14244&action=View )

What's strange is that both Ubuntu (also with custom build kernel) and
Fedora 12 Alpha hang with a high probability, but OpenSuse 11.2 (also
with a 2.6.31 kernel) has booted about 25 times without any problems.

[Bug 410984] Re: Regression: HP hdx 9300 often hangs on boot with acpi enabled

2009-09-05 Thread Stefan Krause
Alpha 5 still doesn't boot. I'm attaching a screenshot of the live cd
booted without the quiet and splash options.

I also tried Fedora 12 Alpha and have the following result for 2.6.31 distros:
Ubuntu + Fedora: Hang on boot about 75% of the time (hard lock, only powering
off works as shutdown method ctrl + alt +del is ignored)
OpenSuse 11.2: Boots completely fine

Is there anything I can do to help finding the root for this issue?

[Bug 407790] Re: [Regression] No sound with Karmic on HP HDX 9300

2009-08-23 Thread Stefan Krause
I've also file a bug on alsa about it (https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org
/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4665 ) and I tried some things in the subsequent
days.

The current status is:
* I have no way to make it work with alsa 1.0.20
* Kernel 2.6.31 comes with a more recent alsa version, which offers a new
option "model=5stack-no-fp" (seems that it's still labeled 1.0.20)
* If model is set to 5stack-no-fp and "Line Jack Mode" = "Line Out" then sound
works (Some channels have to be unmuted)
* After each reboot the "Line Jack Mode" must be set to a different value and
then back to "Line Out" to make sound work
* This works for both the 2.6.31-6 kernel and the mainline kernel

I've tried to restart alsa after gnome starts and see if that helps with
the re-adjustment of the line jack mode issue, but it didn't.

[Bug 410984] Re: Regression: HP hdx 9300 often hangs on boot with acpi enabled

2009-08-23 Thread Stefan Krause
Since it happens with the ubuntu and mainline kernel I was afraid it could be
due to kernel 2.6.31.
I just did a quick test and installed openSuse 11.2 Milestone 6, wich comes
with kernel 2.6.31-rc6 (uname says Linux linux-7nwb 2.6.31-rc6-3-desktop #1 SMP
PREEMPT 2009-08-17 21:11:11 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux).
I have no problems at all booting with openSuse (acpi is fully enabled).

[Bug 410984] Re: Regression: HP hdx 9300 often hangs on boot with acpi enabled

2009-10-13 Thread Stefan Krause
The 9.10 Beta 64 bit version hangs in about 80% of the time when booting.
Disabling apci (and maybe noacpi) avoid the problem.
I'm using the 32 bit version since almost a week and booting works fine. If the
32 bit version hangs during booting I'll report both here and in the bugzilla
tracker.

[Bug 320798] Re: [jaunty regression] No sound with HDA intel

2009-10-13 Thread Stefan Krause
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 316125 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316125

As I'm the original reporter I think I should add some information to
this bug and I think it's not a duplicate.

My first problem is that I need to choose model=5stack-no-fp instead of 5stack
with newer kernel versions. After that I get some sound back, but my second
problem is that I have to set the "Line jack mode" to "line out" after each
reboot.
And it even seems that after some time after sound has stopped I have to set
the line jack mode again (I'm not sure if I'm clear: aplay test.wav, stop it,
wait for a minute, aplay test.wav => no sound until line jack mode is set).
(Maybe powersaving related?)

[Bug 407790] Re: [Regression] No sound with Karmic on HP HDX 9300

2009-10-15 Thread Stefan Krause
I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-14-generic and tried
again without better results. How can I check that I have the right alsa
version?

The situation remains the same: I get some sound when I unmute the channels and
turn the volume up and change the line jack mode as described above.
There appears to be a timeout issue: After a certain amount of time after all
sound stopped I have to repeat the line jack procedure. My alsa-base.conf
contains the line
options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N model=5stack-no-fp
Seems as if there's a timeout of 10 seconds after which I lose my sound again.

Even after that I would prefer not to set the line jack after each
reboot.

Please let me know what other files than created by alsa-info.sh I
should attach.

[Bug 410984] Re: Regression: HP hdx 9300 often hangs on boot with acpi enabled

2010-07-05 Thread Stefan Krause
Hi richwillal,

how do you increase boot time? Just wait at the grub menu?

My most recent kernel bug report is located here:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15708&action=View
Currently I have no idea what's really causing the issue: ACPI, ATA_PIIX or
something else (seems to be some race condition or penalty for booting too fast
;-)

If you want to help and have some spare time (and strong nerves) you
could try to bisect the kernels - Tejun Heo from kernel.org is really
very supportive.
