[Bug 189814] Re: [hardy]computer and touchpad is buggy when running on battery

2008-06-30 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I can confirm that this bug can only be reproduced when the laptop have
a BIOS password set! Thanks for finding this!

** Summary changed:

- [hardy]computer and touchpad is buggy when running on battery
+ [hardy]computer and touchpad is buggy with BIOS password set

** Description changed:

This bug happens with a freshly installed hardy beta 1 when the computer
is running on battery or at the moment I plug/unplug the electric cable
  into my computer.

If I let the computer unused for some minutes (2-5 minutes), when I come
back and try to use the mouse, the mouse move of some centimeters,
suddenly freeze for almost 5 seconds, and then come back to life. It can
be reproduced since it continually happens each time I use my computer
after reading a short text or spooke to somebody. If I plug or unplug
the electric cable, the mouse freeze again for a 7 seconds. If any
sounds are playing during the time that the mouse freeze, the sound is
  also corrupted and freeze.

This bug does not happen when the electric cable is plugged, and it
happens with metacity as much as compiz.

Each time that the mouse suddenly freeze, I get this in dmesg :
  [ 804.829840] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost
synchronization, throwing 4 bytes away.
[ 807.405427] psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request
  [ 810.926845] input: PS/2 Mouse as /devices/virtual/input/input9
  [ 810.973805] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input10

- This might maybe be linked with bug 190414, tsc clocksource does not
- work on my laptop with Hardy kernel so linux switch to hpet instead
- after ~35 seconds waiting at boot.
-
This bug is not a hardware failure because it is not reproducible under
Linux Ubuntu Gutsy and Windows XP.

  Dell Inspiron 9300, i386
+
+ Update : It has been found that this bug only appears when there is a
+ BIOS password set on laptop computers.

openSuSE? Or, why not, intrepid 8.10 (which should have a working alpha

2008-06-30 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I tested the gnome-panel patch under intrepid (gnome-panel

60 gnome-terminal windows with no problem. However, a side effect is
that a single window takes the whole bar and it is not possible to right
clic to set the bar to bottom instead of left/right without removing
window list applet temporarily.

[Bug 243543] Re: missing .desktop file in no icon for gtkam

2008-07-01 Thread Saïvann Carignan
The missing icon is due to the corrupted PNG icon in the 0.1.14 version
of gtkam. The 0.1.15 version fixes this, however, it needs libgphoto2 >=
2.4.0.05 which is not in Intrepid or debian unstable yet. I think that
we will have to wait for libgphoto2 2.4.1 before updating gtkam and
having the correct icon.

[Bug 189814] Re: HAL crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password

2008-07-02 Thread Saïvann Carignan
** Changed in: hal (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Triaged

** Changed in: libsmbios
   Status: New => Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- HAL crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password
+ HAL lockups or crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password

** Description changed:

This description is totally rewritten by Andrea Ratto (LP andrearatto) to
recap the situation. The root cause has been really hard to find as it seemed a
kernel issue related to the touchpad at first.
The problem reported here and its cause have already been confirmed by at
least 5 users.
This bug refers primarily to HAL, but also relates to libsmbios. It is
triggered by gnome-power-manager, but it's not its fault.

  Symptoms:
very frequent temporary lock-ups on input after some inactivity
frequent hard lock-ups with CAPS lock and NUM lock flashing
very frequent loss of synchronization with the touchpad, which then looses
advanced functionalities; with this in dmesg
  [ 804.829840] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost
synchronization, throwing 4 bytes away.
[ 807.405427] psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request
  [ 810.926845] input: PS/2 Mouse as /devices/virtual/input/input9
  [ 810.973805] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input10

  Affected hardware:
dell laptops with a BIOS password set (probably all/most of them)

  Releases affected
- hardy for sure, probably intrepid too. gusty is not affected.
+ hardy, intrepid. gusty is not affected.
Other distro are affected too, e.g. Fedora 9.

  What is known so far:
gnome-power-manager tries to dim the brightness of the screen after some
inactivity and then reset it upon input.
This is a default setting, so the user has no clue of what might be causing
the issue.
gnome-power-manager calls HAL to do the job. HAL on dell machines, since
hardy, uses libsmbios for brightness setting.

Libsmbios needs the BIOS password even to change the brightness and HAL
has no way to tell it that password, as of now. Some users have also
reported that libsmbios does not work even from the command line
  utility, specifying the pass.

However, instead of just printing an error when it fails, it makes the
computer lock for a few seconds, due to the direct interaction with the
bios on a very low level. The kernel has then problems reading input
events and might crash. These lock-ups should also be avoided in
libsmbios, as that is really ugly. However it needs root privileges and
it's HAL who is calling it again and again when it should not, so the
  lockups are more HAL's fault.

  Testing/repoducing:
1: of course using gnome and gnome-power-manager, setting "Dim display when
idle" to enabled.
Same effects can be achieved by:
2: using the command /usr/sbin/dellLcdBrightness from libsmbios-bin package.
Here's a command that rapidly switch brightness 10 times:
  for x in `seq 1 10`; do sudo dellLcdBrightness -a -v 1;sleep 0.1; sudo
dellLcdBrightness -a -v 5; done
#Warning it may hang your machine
3: the brightness applet of the gnome-panel.

  A possible elegant solution:
  * Correct HAL's detection of brightness setting capability on dell, so that
it only reports it when it can be set with no errors. It might require using
some test method in libsmbios, which I don't know if it is present or has to be
added.
Maybe also add some way for HAL to read the bios password from config files
if the user wishes so. (This is probably somewhat already planned)
Solving the stalling in libsmbios might prevent crashes, but yet HAL would
keep calling it and get errors, so a fix in HAL is needed.
  Less elegant:
turn off HAL's usage of libsmbios in one of its config files and have users
who want it to manually set it.

possible temporary workarounds for users experiencing this:
  - unset the bios password
  - blacklist the dcdbas kernel module
  - disable dimming in gnome-power
  - I don't know how to disable this functionality from HAL, but that would be
the best workaround.

NOTE: if HAL is allowed to use libsmbios a local user could exploit it
to induce a denial of service or crash.

I hope this info proves clear and useful. For anything else just ask.

[Bug 232402] Re: xulrunner 1.9 support for chmsee 1.0.0

2008-07-03 Thread Saïvann Carignan
** Summary changed:

- chmsee FTBFS in Hardy
+ xulrunner 1.9 support for chmsee 1.0.0

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: chmsee
+ I would like to ask for a SRU for chmsee 1.0.0 for Hardy.

- Problem : chmsee FTBFS in Hardy because it tries to run xulrunner-devel
- version 1.9b5 which is now replaced by the RC1 (file path is now only
- 1.9 and not 1.9b5). This also cause current chmsee version to not start
- (bug #204487) because it is not able to find xulrunner.
+ PROBLEM : Current chmsee 1.0.0-1ubuntu1 FTBFS and crashes at start in
+ Hardy because it can't find xulrunner 1.9 libraries. We can consider
+ that this package currently comes in Hardy in a broken state. Creating
+ links to the correct xulrunner paths is a workaround that works to avoid
+ crash at start.

- Solution : The latest xulrunner release is in hardy-updates and the
- definitive path to xulrunner is now /usr/lib/xulrunner-devel-1.9 . In
- order to fix this, debian/rules needs this obvious modification :
+ SOLUTION : Use XPCOM standalone glue, as described in ubuntu wiki :

- DEB_CONFIGURE_SCRIPT_ENV += LDFLAGS="
-Wl,--as-needed,-rpath,/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9"
- should replace :
- DEB_CONFIGURE_SCRIPT_ENV += LDFLAGS="
-Wl,--as-needed,-rpath,/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9b3"
+ Static obsolete W-rpath,/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9b3" in debian/rules has
+ been dropped and DEB_CONFIGURE_EXTRA_FLAGS += --with-gecko=libxul has
+ been added.

- Patches fix this problem and the Debian maintainer field which does not
- comply with latest specification (bug #230350)
+ chmsee 1.0.1 is available in intrepid and support xulrunner 1.9
+ standalone glue. Relevant parts of the source code of chmsee 1.0.1 has
+ been imported as a patch for the current 1.0.0 package to fix
+ compatibility with xulrunner 1.9.

[Bug 235900] Re: firefox 3 displays full screen on start

2008-07-04 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I can confirm this bug and how it might be reproduced. I updated the bug
description to contains required steps to reproduce the bug. You can
also see the bug reproduced in the attached videos.

** Summary changed:

- firefox 3 beta 5 displays full screen on start
+ firefox 3 displays full screen on start

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: firefox-3.0
-
On initial start of firefox, it displays fullscreen (i like to call it
super-maximised). ie over gnome panels and without window borders.

This is remedied by pushing F11 twice, to render the web page area
fullscreen, then restore to 'maximized' status. It then corrects itself
to fit within the gnome panels (they are default top and bottom of the
screen), and displays the correct window borders (emerald theme).

  I am using:
  * Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy
  * Firefox 3 beta 5
  * Compiz-fusion with emerald (suspect problem exists here, however there are
no other apps that display the same issue)
  * no Backports or Proposed Update repositories (ie default Ubuntu
repositories only)

+ Update : This bug can be reproduced when firefox is opened in de-
+ maximized mode inside a lower resolution than the last time it has been
+ closed. This can also happens, for example, when a firefox profile is
+ shared between two operating systems with different screen resolutions.
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Use the bigger resolution that your computer can take and open Firefox.
+ 2. If not already done, demaximize the Firefox window (right clic /
Demaximize).
+ 3. Close Firefox
+ 4. Change the screen resolution for a very lower one.
+ 5. Open Firefox

[Bug 249037] Re: After upgrade, nothing shows up on screen during and after boot

2008-07-25 Thread Saïvann Carignan
There's been several people reporting blank or corrupted usplash in
Intrepid including myself. I just found that if I boot without usplash,
right after Grub menu, initramfs complains :uvesafb : Failed to execute
/sbin/v86d

This is strange because I don't use any framebuffer mode, and uvesafb
seems to start anyway. /sbin/v86d is not installed by default. In my
case, installing "v86d" package is a workaround that brought usplash
back to life. Can someone try this workaround and confirm if it solves
the issue?

[Bug 246269] Re: Switched from vesafb to uvesafb, but uvesafb can't work without v86d

2008-07-25 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I confirm that current uvesafb is broken due to missing v86d.

This might be another bug, but uvesafb even starts without VGA=
arguments in /boot/grub/menu.lst in my case, causing corrupted splash
screens on a brand new intrepid installation.

after complete verifications, it is safe to remove the csh dependencies,
we should do it.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 219349 ***

The behavior of usplash in this case is correct. Since a specific step
of the boot process takes a abnormal time to finishes, it drops to
console so you can see what's going on. According to this, I set this
bug as a duplicate of bug 219349 which aim to fix that abnormal boot
time during the activation of swap partition.

2008-07-31 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I also confirm this bug. Other ways to reproduce this bug and a video
are included in duplicate bug 235900 .

Also a important note which could explain why some people gets this bug
while other people don't : This bug is not reproducible with all screen
resolutions. Ex. It's not possible to reproduce it with 1680x1050, but
it can be reproduced with 1280x1024.

[Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2008-07-31 Thread Saïvann Carignan
loftarasa : Then it might not be *only* resolution related, but here's
the result of my observations and test.

I have more than 10 customers that use firefox and compiz, but only one
have this problem, which appears every week. His screen resolution is
1280x1024. A clean install and clean firefox profile does not fix
anything.

Personally, I never had this problem with 1680x1050 (the maximum
resolution of my screen) and I can't reproduce the bug with that
resolution, however if I change the resolution of my screen to 1280x1024
or 1024x768, I can easily reproduce it.

Since this bug can also be reproduced when you open a firefox profile on
a lower resolution than the last one firefox used, would it be a
possible explanation that compiz uses his own way to deal with the
resolution instead of working with the real used resolution and sometime
assume a higher resolution than the "real" one?

This would explain why some people get this bug and why some people
don't, depending on the match between graphic card and screen.

[Bug 153526] Re: segmentation fault when set as away by GUI

Nice, then this might be useful to patch it upstream. Can you attach
your patch to the upstream bug
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=549084 ?

[Bug 230209] Re: upgrade thunderbird locales for 2.0.0.x and include new upstream translations

2008-08-26 Thread Saïvann Carignan
launchpad build system says that thunderbird locales successfully built
and the build logs looks OK, but it's been 6 days and the deb are still
not in the repository. Is there a problem with launchpad build system?

2008-08-26 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I already tested all locales before uploading and all locales worked
correctly. Since the upload, I didn't test them all, but all locales
that I test or use works perfectly, and no locales seems to be missing.

[Bug 153526] Re: segmentation fault when set as away by GUI

2008-08-26 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Philip Wuett : Oh then, since there seems to be many chances that there
will be no new xchat-gnome release for intrepid, I believe that we
should use this patch to fix xchat-gnome directly in intrepid. Firstly,
can you look if this patch introduces other bug? If not, can you provide
a debdiff so your works gets reviewed for intrepid? Thanks for your work
so far!

Ubuntu sponsors for universe : Can you review and consider the debdiff
of Philip Wyett for upload to intrepid? I can confirm that this debdiff
fixes the crash bug. I built this debdiff in my PPA so it can also be
tested :

This is necessary since this will give us more information about your

2008-08-27 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Philip Wyett : I also agree. Can you provide a debdiff for hardy-
proposed and subscribe motu-sru to the bug report? The intrepid debdiff
cannot be applied to hardy because the patches are different, so we need
another debdiff for hardy-proposed.

[Bug 153526] Re: segmentation fault when set as away by GUI

2008-08-27 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Philip Wyett : Thank you very much for your work on this! I forgot to
mention you that hardy debdiff version number should have a appropriate
version number for a Stable Release Update (generally followed by
~8.04.1). This is needed to avoid identical version numbers between
different ubuntu releases. Also, I changed "hardy" for "hardy-proposed"
in your distribution field in changelog. Many thanks again for the work!

MOTU SRU : I've reviewed and tested this patch, it builds and works
fine. The reasons why this debdiff could qualify for a SRU is that it
fixes a already existing patch which caused crash when setting as away.
I believe that the situation where the crash can be reproduced is very
common, and justify the SRU. Thanks for your review
