[Bug 189814] Re: [hardy]computer and touchpad is buggy when running on battery
I can confirm that this bug can only be reproduced when the laptop have a BIOS password set! Thanks for finding this! ** Summary changed: - [hardy]computer and touchpad is buggy when running on battery + [hardy]computer and touchpad is buggy with BIOS password set ** Description changed: This bug happens with a freshly installed hardy beta 1 when the computer is running on battery or at the moment I plug/unplug the electric cable into my computer. If I let the computer unused for some minutes (2-5 minutes), when I come back and try to use the mouse, the mouse move of some centimeters, suddenly freeze for almost 5 seconds, and then come back to life. It can be reproduced since it continually happens each time I use my computer after reading a short text or spooke to somebody. If I plug or unplug the electric cable, the mouse freeze again for a 7 seconds. If any sounds are playing during the time that the mouse freeze, the sound is also corrupted and freeze. This bug does not happen when the electric cable is plugged, and it happens with metacity as much as compiz. Each time that the mouse suddenly freeze, I get this in dmesg : [ 804.829840] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 4 bytes away. [ 807.405427] psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request [ 810.926845] input: PS/2 Mouse as /devices/virtual/input/input9 [ 810.973805] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input10 - This might maybe be linked with bug 190414, tsc clocksource does not - work on my laptop with Hardy kernel so linux switch to hpet instead - after ~35 seconds waiting at boot. - This bug is not a hardware failure because it is not reproducible under Linux Ubuntu Gutsy and Windows XP. [Bug 189814] Re: HAL crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password
** Changed in: hal (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: libsmbios Status: New => Confirmed ** Summary changed: - HAL crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password + HAL lockups or crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password ** Description changed: This description is totally rewritten by Andrea Ratto (LP andrearatto) to recap the situation. The root cause has been really hard to find as it seemed a kernel issue related to the touchpad at first. The problem reported here and its cause have already been confirmed by at least 5 users. This bug refers primarily to HAL, but also relates to libsmbios. It is triggered by gnome-power-manager, but it's not its fault. Symptoms: very frequent temporary lock-ups on input after some inactivity frequent hard lock-ups with CAPS lock and NUM lock flashing very frequent loss of synchronization with the touchpad, which then looses advanced functionalities; with this in dmesg [ 804.829840] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 4 bytes away. [ 807.405427] psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request [ 810.926845] input: PS/2 Mouse as /devices/virtual/input/input9 [ 810.973805] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input10 Affected hardware: dell laptops with a BIOS password set (probably all/most of them) Releases affected - hardy for sure, probably intrepid too. gusty is not affected. + hardy, intrepid. gusty is not affected. Other distro are affected too, e.g. Fedora 9. What is known so far: gnome-power-manager tries to dim the brightness of the screen after some inactivity and then reset it upon input. This is a default setting, so the user has no clue of what might be causing the issue. gnome-power-manager calls HAL to do the job. HAL on dell machines, since hardy, uses libsmbios for brightness setting. Libsmbios needs the BIOS password even to change the brightness and HAL has no way to tell it that password, as of now. Some users have also reported that libsmbios does not work even from the command line utility, specifying the pass. However, instead of just printing an error when it fails, it makes the computer lock for a few seconds, due to the direct interaction with the bios on a very low level. The kernel has then problems reading input events and might crash. These lock-ups should also be avoided in libsmbios, as that is really ugly. However it needs root privileges and it's HAL who is calling it again and again when it should not, so the lockups are more HAL's fault. Testing/repoducing: 1: of course using gnome and gnome-power-manager, setting "Dim display when idle" to enabled. Same effects can be achieved by: 2: using the command /usr/sbin/dellLcdBrightness from libsmbios-bin package. Here's a command that rapidly switch brightness 10 times: for x in `seq 1 10`; do sudo dellLcdBrightness -a -v 1;sleep 0.1; sudo dellLcdBrightness -a -v 5; done #Warning it may hang your machine 3: the brightness applet of the gnome-panel. A possible elegant solution: * Correct HAL's detection of brightness setting capability on dell, so that it only reports it when it can be set with no errors. It might require using some test method in libsmbios, which I don't know if it is present or has to be added. Maybe also add some way for HAL to read the bios password from config files if the user wishes so. (This is probably somewhat already planned) Solving the stalling in libsmbios might prevent crashes, but yet HAL would keep calling it and get errors, so a fix in HAL is needed. Less elegant: turn off HAL's usage of libsmbios in one of its config files and have users who want it to manually set it. possible temporary workarounds for users experiencing this: - unset the bios password - blacklist the dcdbas kernel module - disable dimming in gnome-power - I don't know how to disable this functionality from HAL, but that would be the best workaround. NOTE: if HAL is allowed to use libsmbios a local user could exploit it to induce a denial of service or crash. I hope this info proves clear and useful. For anything else just ask. ** Changed in: libsmbios (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: gnome-power-manager => libsmbios Importance: Undecided => Medium Status: Invalid => Triaged -- HAL lockups or crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/189814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 235900] Re: firefox 3 displays full screen on start
I can confirm this bug and how it might be reproduced. I updated the bug description to contains required steps to reproduce the bug. You can also see the bug reproduced in the attached videos. ** Summary changed: - firefox 3 beta 5 displays full screen on start + firefox 3 displays full screen on start ** Description changed: - Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 - On initial start of firefox, it displays fullscreen (i like to call it super-maximised). ie over gnome panels and without window borders. This is remedied by pushing F11 twice, to render the web page area fullscreen, then restore to 'maximized' status. It then corrects itself to fit within the gnome panels (they are default top and bottom of the screen), and displays the correct window borders (emerald theme). I am using: * Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy * Firefox 3 beta 5 * Compiz-fusion with emerald (suspect problem exists here, however there are no other apps that display the same issue) * no Backports or Proposed Update repositories (ie default Ubuntu repositories only) + Update : This bug can be reproduced when firefox is opened in de- + maximized mode inside a lower resolution than the last time it has been + closed. This can also happens, for example, when a firefox profile is + shared between two operating systems with different screen resolutions. + + Steps to reproduce: + 1. Use the bigger resolution that your computer can take and open Firefox. + 2. If not already done, demaximize the Firefox window (right clic / Demaximize). + 3. Close Firefox + 4. Change the screen resolution for a very lower one. + 5. [Bug 249037] Re: After upgrade, nothing shows up on screen during and after boot
There's been several people reporting blank or corrupted usplash in Intrepid including myself. [Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects
I also confirm this bug. Other ways to reproduce this bug and a video are included in duplicate bug 235900 . Also a important note which could explain why some people gets this bug while other people don't : This bug is not reproducible with all screen resolutions. Ex. It's not possible to reproduce it with 1680x1050, but it can be reproduced with 1280x1024. ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Triaged -- Firefox problems with desktop-effects https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/99740 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects
loftarasa : Then it might not be *only* resolution related, but here's the result of my observations and test. I have more than 10 customers that use firefox and compiz, but only one have this problem, which appears every week. His screen resolution is 1280x1024. A clean install and clean firefox profile does not fix anything. Personally, I never had this problem with 1680x1050 (the maximum resolution of my screen) and I can't reproduce the bug with that resolution, however if I change the resolution of my screen to 1280x1024 or 1024x768, I can easily reproduce it. Since this bug can also be reproduced when you open a firefox profile on a lower resolution than the last one firefox used, would it be a possible explanation that compiz uses his own way to deal with the resolution instead of working with the real used resolution and sometime assume a higher resolution than the "real" one? This would explain why some people get this bug and why some people don't, depending on the match between graphic card and screen. -- Firefox problems with desktop-effects https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/99740 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Philip Wyett : Thank you very much for your work on this!
