Ouch. You are right. The file is perfectly viewable in a PowerPC,

[Bug 298139] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in spectre_gs_send_page()

2010-04-21 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Hi, Martin.

Just for the record, upstream has released 0.2.5 and it includes the
patch. Please, see:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libspectre/commit/?id=ee8c5a19138f33dd4c40da4e3def16eba48eccc1

Also, the package is already in Debian unstable:

http://packages.qa.debian.org/libs/libspectre/news/20100421T000301Z.html

I think that if you want, we can join and debug this thing so that we
release lucid working on ppc, amd64 and x86 (and this covers a wide
range of platform possibilities---big endian, 64 bit, little endian
etc).

Did you test it? I am not at my amd64 right now, so even if I had a
cross-compilation environment, it would not be like the real thing.

Just another feedback, for some reason, using a very, very up-to-date

the bug with the article attached to this bug report.

Something must be fishy here...

[Bug 520712] [NEW] mplayer crashes with illegal instruction on a non-altivec enabled processor

2010-02-11 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

Hi.

mplayer 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu10.1 (from karmic) crashes on my
PowerPC with a SIGILL (signal 4) in init_video_coded on my father's G3
computer.

I have not yet investigated, but I would bet that this is because it is
compiled with altivec enabled, while the computer does not have that
(this is similar to compiling a program requiring SSE4.1 to run on
generic i686 computers).

Is there any possibility of providing two packages, one compiled with
altivec and other compiled without? I can provide patches, if desired.

I don't quite remember. The only thing that I know is that I still have
some packages in Debian that I requested to be sync'ed with karmic, but
those requests are still there.

Perhaps I didn't follow the proper protocol, but I would appreciate
someone in Ubuntu keeping in touch with me in Debian. More collaboration
would be welcome.

[Bug 514827] [NEW] monitor is turned off before starting X if splash option is passed to the kernel

2010-01-30 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

Hi.

I'm just instaling Ubuntu 9.10 (everything up-to-date as of today) on my
girlfriends computer and everything seems to be working, but one thing
is leaving her confused: when the splash screen should appear on the
system, the (LCD) monitor unsyncs and shows a message that the user
should use the recommended resolution of 1024x768 @ 60Hz.

When X is started, everything works fine.

If I remove the splash option from the command line of the kernel, the
console is shown and no problems with the monitor occour. The problem
happens both with kernels 2.6.31-1{4,8}-generic (this is an i386
machine) and with 2.6.33-020633rc6-generic (downloaded right now).

The computer is a Duron 1.3GHz, with 512MB of memory, with 16MB of
memory shared with video. The video card is a SiS 630/730 and the
monitor is a SyncMaster 540N. I am using xserver-xorg-video-sis version
1:0.10.1-2.

If any further information is desired, please let me know.

Thanks, Rogério Brito.

I'm not even sure that usbmount 0.0.17 would work at all with
karmic---I'm using a standard Debian sid system here.

If karmic doesn't offer vol_id, then versions < 0.0.18 are useless and
will not work.

The data loss is described in .

Debian: there are two nasty segfaults that I fixed and which are already
in upstream repositories.

One of those is in fontforge (with a newer release already in the new
version on Debian) which has already migrated to testing.

http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/f/fontforge/current/changelog

Another one is an extremely important bugfix to libspectre. The bug
makes evince and the nautilus thumbnailer (among others) unuseable in
big-endian platforms. The fix is already commited in libspectre's
upstream repository (and the patch is already here in launchpad).

[Bug 563052] [NEW] Sync fontforge 0.0.20090923-2 (main) from Debian testing (main)

2010-04-14 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Public bug reported:

Please sync fontforge 0.0.20090923-2 (main) from Debian testing (main)

Changelog entries since current lucid version 0.0.20090923-1:

fontforge (0.0.20090923-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Switched to 3.0 (quilt) source format. As a consequence, no longer
build-depend on quilt and removed the file README.source.
  * debian/control:
- add ${misc:Depends} to dependencies to properly cope with
  debhelper-triggerred dependencies;
- bumped Standards-Version to 3.8.4. No changes required.
  * debian/patches: added the patch 026_fix-null-pntr-dereference.diff for
allowing the dereference of the 'cs' pointer in the scstyles.c file if
it is non-NUL. Thanks to Rogério Brito for the
patch (Closes: #569548).

[Bug 298139] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in spectre_gs_send_page()

2010-04-14 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
So, would it be possible to have this segfault fixed in time for the
release?

It is a very important fix at least for those running big endian
machines (which includes powerpc and sparc). A different version of the
fix (but equally good) is already commited in upstream's repository for
some time, and also verified.

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libspectre/commit/?id=35aa9dfac2631de24a40d95d1469acb52f379249

If you want the least disruptive change, one that can be applied in a
wide range of releases, then the patch that I attached to this bug
should be the first choice.

Anyway, a reply is welcome, even if only to say "no, it won't be
accepted", so that I don't waste my time anymore. The technical
background of *why* the bug happens and how to fix it is at

This is quite bureacratic, but I tried to follow the process. It
doesn't make the bugs any less important if I did not follow the
protocol correct, though. :-)

Help is HIGHLY appreciated (that's why I am asking here---I only want

No, I observed the problem with a big-endian machine (a powerpc).

Would you like any extra details? Perhaps we have more than one
problem, then. Did you happen to use gdb to find out where the problem
comes from?

I am, right now, using a i386, but I have here in this room both an
amd64 and a powerpc. With the i386 and the powerpc, I don't see any
problems with the patch (any of them) applied.

If you suspect that the problem is indeed at the same place of the
problem of the cast, can you see what value the variable contain?

[Bug 298139] Re: evince crashed with SIGSEGV in spectre_gs_send_page()

2010-03-17 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Hi there.

I've been bitten by this one for almost a year and I just took some time
to discover what the hell was happening here.

After bisecting here the git tree from upstream, I noticed an error: the
commit 52fa52f93943a6154cf2ac9b473d6b4948d75a15 changes a cast from an
unsigned long long int to a uintptr_t. This may have worked on some
architectures, but it surely doesn't work on some 32-bit arches. In
particular, on PowerPC, this leads to very bad results:

#include

int main(void)
{
printf("%llu\n", (unsigned long int) 42);
printf("%llu\n", (unsigned long long int) 42);
return 0;
}

produces here:

183609205424
42

The problem with the code is in libspectre/spectre-device.c, around line
240. Reverting the commit 52fa52f93943a6154cf2ac9b473d6b4948d75a15 fixes
this here and makes everything work fine. I can confirm that the file
that the original poster posted here works fine now.

BTW, just for the record, here are the sizes, in bytes, of the integral
and pointer types in the 32 and 64-bit archictectures under Linux:

| | 32 bits arch | 64 bits arch |
| int |4 |4 |
| long |4 |8 |
| long long |8 |8 |
| pointer |4 |8 |
| short |2 |2 |

Sorry if this shows up messed up, but seeing with a fixed-width font
makes things nicer---otherwise, see
http://wiki.debian.org/ArchitectureSpecificsMemo.

In summary, we need the field to always be 8-bytes long and simply using
a (unsigned) long is enough for, say, amd64, but not for powerpc. We
really want a type that is 8-bytes wide in both arches and this should
be a long long.

Otherwise, the instruction to use a format string of llu (or llx, for
that matter) on a printf-like function makes the function read
information that is not part of the integral argument being passed.

Regards,

Can you please give any further infomation regarding the "bug"? In
what sense did the update "screwed up" your mp3 player?

Unless you can provide some further data, I think that I will mark
this bug as incomplete, as it is not possible to help you with your
issues here.

Also, please keep in mind that if you don't provide extra information,
then when you upgrade, a newer version of usbmount will probably get
installed or, if you choose to pin the current version of usbmount,
then you will also have to take care of the vol_id change.

Looking at your e-mail address makes it clear that you can surely

These messages come directly from the Linux kernel and it indicates that
there is some problem with the kernel talking with the device. This
occurs much earlier than udev is called (which, in turn, calls
usbmount).

That is supposing that usbmount is even installed on the system.

Well, that's great that you're helping squash bugs. Congratulations. We
all need this sort of quality assurance.

BTW, if you want to help with some bugs, it will be nice if you can also
help to fix some of them on Debian, as the packages that go into Ubuntu
are usually grabbed from Debian and this benefits both distributions.

No problems. I just reassigned this to the linux kernel, even though
some details about the situation when the bug happens are missing. This
bug could be flagged as incomplete or similar.

Hi.

It seems that I'm seeing this bug with Lucid's CD as of today. I'm
running things from the Live CD, without anything installed so far, just
to see the status quo.

I tried playing the example video from the CD (the one with the ocean
etc). It played, say, 10 seconds, stopped and then segfaulted.

I will try to see what apport has prepared as a trace, but I fear that
it lost the trace so far... :-( (Oh, wait, it is here).

I can provide many details more, as needed (of course, I don't know if I
can reproduce this, but I can try).

accepted".

[Bug 478487] Re: usbmount cannnot execute /lib/udev/vol_id

2009-11-10 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Yes, this is correct.

The version that was released with karmic does not work with the other
userspace parts. I have already fixed this in a newer release, in Debian
(version 0.0.18).

http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/u/usbmount/current/changelog#versionversion0.0.18

I would suggest that you get your version from Debian in the mean time
that Ubuntu does not update the package. I am, BTW, working to clean up
the code and will quite probably upload a new version (0.0.19) real soon
now (TM).

[Bug 410522] Re: Mounting a dirty /boot/grub hfs partition on powerpc makes it read-only, causing package grub-ieee1275 failing the upgrade

2009-11-05 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
First of all, hfsprogs is a different package from hfsutils, despite the
similarity in the names.

Second, usually the program that shows any "filesystem is dirty" and
that it will be mounted read-only is the kernel hfsplus module.

Third, filesystems that are already dirty when they are mounted is a
signal of a problem somewhere else. Probably the unmounting of them is
not done correctly.

As far as I can see, this bug is invalidly reported against hfsprogs
(and also grub). It would have something to do with the initial scripts.

[Bug 1667208] [NEW] Ubuntu's selenium hardcodes a path that is valid for Debian, but not for Ubuntu

2017-02-22 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Public bug reported:

Hi.

The package python{,3}-selenium uses a hardcoded path of
'/usr/lib/chromium/chromedriver' when instantiating a Chrome webdriver.

That path is correct for Debian (in particular, it was directly
inherited from https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=805733#5), but since Ubuntu uses chromium-browser
instead of Debian's chromium naming. The package chromium-chromedriver
in Ubuntu installs the webdriver at '/usr/lib/chromium-
browser/chromedriver'.

There needs to be a synchronization between the selenium Python module
and the webdriver package.

Strange... I only found out about them coming here to the bug log.

Anyway, I grabbed telegram-desktop and the voip library from the next

Having it uploaded to zesty would make this work for the potentially
large fraction of telegram users that install from the official

As a use case, I can easily install that on both of my parents

pestering upstream.

You can usually grab the newest versions of youtube-dl from Debian
unstable, as that is where I'm doing my job. I think that I can set up
something (say a reminder) to ask Ubuntu to sync from Debian every
time that I upload a new version.

I plan on uploading one this weekend by the way.

In my Debian packages, I don't consider the option of removing the
update, as it is, exactly as you say, a strictly voluntary option of
the user.

I consider this the equivalent of removing the option of the user to
download python packages via pip, perl packages via cpan, node.js
packages via npm, eclipse extensions etc.

So, as long as I maintain youtube-dl in Debian, the Debian package
won't be patched and will be as similar to upstream as possible (and,
in fact, I have avoided patching youtube-dl in Debian and submitted my
changes upstream directly *before* I incorporated them in Debian).

> This just means that youtube-dl gets useless early (or even before) the

> of a distribution.

Indeed. This kind of software is a moving target. See my long comments
on Debian's NEWS file regarding the changes in Youtube's provision of
videos with audio and video in separate. The next upload that I do
will have fixes for vimeo, as they have changed things.

In other words, web scrapers consist of a class of packages that don't
really qualify for an long term release. The same thing happens with
browsers, but a big browser is simply a very large program, while the
program that I package is a small one that people can even opt to not
ship in a release.

What do all the big browsers and the web scrapers have in common? They
manipulate changing code provided by 3rd parties.

[Bug 1663183] [NEW] Sync youtube-dl 2017.02.07-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * New upstream feature release.

I just uploaded a new version to Debian's sid that fixes a lot of problems
extracting data from many sources, not only the ones that were included in
2017.02.01-0ubuntu1.

BTW, the users on older versions of Ubuntu are experiencing problems (I've
been flooded with emails) and this package in particular should be
backported.

[Bug 1669933] [NEW] New upstream version available

2017-03-03 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Public bug reported:

Hi.

I'm really sorry if I'm making any (social) mistake by using a long
habit of reporting wishlist bugs to ubuntu the way that I do it in
Debian. Feel free to point me the correct direction of doing it the
ubuntu-way...

That being said, Ubuntu's zesty version of shotwell is considerably
behind the version that is currently in Debian (testing has upstream
version 0.24.5, disguised as 0.25.4+really0.24.5-0.1) while my up-to-
date zesty system has only 0.22.0+git20160108.r1.f2fb1f7-0ubuntu3.

Would it be possible to get rid of the delta (as far as feasible)
between Debian and Ubuntu?

Thanks,

Rogério Brito.

No problems marking the bug as a duplicate. I am still learning my way
around Ubuntu-land after lightly using it a few years ago. :)

Oh, I see. I read the original bug report and now I see that this is
still being worked on. To the packagers, can we, OTOH, have a version
without that UOA?

BTW, Jens, thank you so very much for maintaining shotwell. It is only
photo manager that I know of that is lightweight even when used
without large desktop environments!

[Bug 1680943] [NEW] telegram-desktop's window never shows up (differently from Debian's sid)

2017-04-07 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Public bug reported:

When I start telegram-desktop, the window never shows up, differently
from the same package in my Debian testing/sid computer.

In both computers I am using MATE as the desktop, but the versions
differ (Debian is using 1.16, IIRC, while ubuntu is using 1.18).

I can provide any extra information that is deemed necessary.

No, I don't have it.

BTW, regarding the assistive technologies messages, I removed the
corresponding packages. I may install them a bit later to test if they
make any difference.

BTW, I am not using any indicator applet at the moment. I may also
test with them, just for test purposes (but I'm not using them on
Debian also).

I am the maintainer of youtube-dl on the Debian side and my work is mirrored
on Ubuntu, but I would love if my uploads of highly volatile packages were
also reflected on Ubuntu.

Especially a package like youtube-dl.

I *just* uploaded it to Debian's unstable. Since it is a leaf package (but a

BTW, I have a question: how can we make youtube-dl uploads more
frequent? It often gets broken and needs many updates. Can we automate
this?

Thanks for all the help,

Just for the record, Matthew's patch is already in Debian's unstable.

BTW, Matthew, what if we joined forces to maintain the package, forward
porting the crufty things that I have written so far and trying to get a
newer version from apple packaged?

You probably know way more than me about the Linux kernel, filesystems
etc.

* take a look in the git repository that I mentioned before and send me a patch

it would be great.

vrms bases its decision on the section of the package. So, this is not a
bug with vrms per se.

Debian opinion != FSF opinion

Furthermore, vrms works by looking at the section of the package to
base its decisions on. If it reports something incorrectly, then there
are two possibilities (which not exclude one from another):

1. there is a bug in vrms
2. there is a bug in the packaging, where an incorrect section of the
package is declared.

If the current version of vrms still reports it incorrectly, reopen
this bug with further information, like the *actual* output of vrms
running on the system.

AFAIK, usbmount was never part of any default system and it would have
to be deliberately installed by the user.

Again: usbmount is just a simple package. It has nothing to do with
the "automatic mounting of usb drives" that most desktop environments
provide.

The new version of usbmount has a very unabashed description that it
is not for regular users.
