[Bug 976159] [NEW] Error while updating using muon: Another application seems to be using the package system at this time
Public bug reported: Muon refuses to perform the current update to my system. I am trying to let it perform the April KDE updates from the kubuntu backports archive. When I click "Full Upgrade" then "Apply Changes" the update fails with the following error: "Another application seems to be using the package system at this time. You must close all other package managers before you will be able to install or remove any packages." I ran "ps -efl | egrep 'apt|dpkg'" and the only process that shows up is: 4 S root 2393 1 0 80 0 - 20790 poll_s 15:20 ?00:00:00 /usr/bin/python /usr/share/apt-xapian-index/update-apt-xapian-index-dbus Killing that process does not help. I have tried the following, all fail to correct the problem: 1) sudo dpkg --configure -a 2) Logout 3) Reboot 4) All possible combinations of the above. The only way to get past this is to use terminal: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade After that, the problem goes away. ** Affects: kde-workspace (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/976159 Title: Error while updating using muon: Another application seems to be using the package system at this time To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-workspace/+bug/976159/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 856434] [NEW] Plugin upgrade via package management fails without purge
Public bug reported: For the past three versions of the flash plugin installer, the install does not install properly. The package upgrade shows up in the automatic upgrades from the security upgrades repository. The package gets installed without visible errors, but once installed, the flash plugin does not appear at all in chrome/chromium's list of installed plugins. In fact, no flash plugin is listed at all. Chrome is not running when the install happens. The only way to fix this is to apt-get purge flashplugin-installer and then install it again. [Bug 902651] [NEW] rtkit-daemon does not obey timezone configuration for logging
Public bug reported: If you look at the syslog on a machine running Ubuntu 11.10 you will discover that the rtkit-daemon does not recognize the system's timezone configuration. [Bug 920666] [NEW] Muon Package Manager hangs during update after fresh install
Public bug reported: I installed a fresh copy of Kubuntu 11.10 from this ISO image: kubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64.iso Then right after install and the first boot the package update available icon is visible in the tray. [Bug 915235] Re: muon-installer crash
I have run into this in a clean install on bare metal in addition to a clean install in virtualbox. [Bug 885555] [NEW] Apper does not display as installed all installed packages
Public bug reported: I noticed that not all packages installed on my system are displayed as being installed in Apper (green check mark next to the package name in the leftmost column). Specifically, I installed postgresql-9.1 using the package of the same name listed in Apper. There is a dependency of postgresql-client-9.1 and it is installed when you install the main package. However, in the list of packages in Apper there is no checkbox next to its name showing that it is installed. I have taken a screen capture of Apper showing that postgresql-9.1 is installed, and I have selected its dependencies which shows that the package postgresql-client-9.1 is installed because it has a green check next to its name, but at the same time there is no check whatsoever in the main list of packages above. I made the window large enough so that you may see all three places at the same time to make the bug obvious. Here is the output of apt-cache policy postgresql-client-9.1 postgresql-client-9.1: Installed: 9.1.1-1 Candidate: 9.1.1-1 Version table: *** 9.1.1-1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status So, it is definitely installed, but that fact is missing from Apper. [Bug 799460] [NEW] nspluginviewer crashes when attempting to display flash content in Akregator
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: akregator Version: 1.6.6 (using KDE 4.6.4) OS:Linux If you load a feed, and the articles that the feed points to on the web contain flash content, the plugin, nspluginviewer, that Akregator uses to display that flash content crashes every time it tries to display the content. For example most all of the articles on this feed have flash content that crashes the plugin: http://exiledonline.com/feed/rss/ Also of note is that it does not crash immediately if the flash content is not initially visible in the display window. It only crashes when you scroll down and make the flash content visible. I have the flash plugin from Adobe installed, perhaps there should be a way to choose to use it rather than this one that is crashing? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Open Akregator Load this feed: http://exiledonline.com/feed/rss/ Follow one of the articles to the website using the link in the feed article. If the flash content is not visible, scroll down the page, when it is visible the plugin will crash. [Bug 820188] [NEW] Severe system freeze due to akonadi shortly after login (not just GPU lockup, but whole enchilada)
Public bug reported: I noticed a very severe freeze that began recently. I had done a couple of things simultaneously, so it took a bit of work to triangulate akonadi as the culprit. My user account was only usable if I logged into the console due to the freeze, and it was not a GPU lockup that I know of, because I could not ssh into the machine from the network. The freeze is the whole system, all work is lost if it was not saved. I was able to fix the problem by renaming ~/.config/akonadi to something else then logout/login. Perhaps the akonadi database had become corrupted in some way that caused the machine to lock up. It is interesting because I have not used any software that connects or uses akonadi on this particular machine. I have saved the offending .config/akonadi directory and can make a tar file of it if a developer wants it to test what is happening. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Use the corrupted config that is attached to this bug report. Actual Results: Severe freeze of the whole system, not just X. [Bug 579876] Re: encrypted home directory isn't mounted if password changed by another user
I have been exploring the geli encryption functions in FreeBSD, and I found that they already have a fully functioning encryption system for whole volume encryption that does not have the problem listed here in this bug. I will quote the pertinent section of their man page here. >From geli(8) in FreeBSD 8.2: You are the security-person in your company. Create an encrypted provider for use by the user, but remember that users forget their passphrases, so back Master Key up with your own random key: # dd if=/dev/random of=/mnt/pendrive/keys/`hostname` bs=64 count=1 # geli init -P -K /mnt/pendrive/keys/`hostname` /dev/ad0s1e # geli backup /dev/ad0s1e /mnt/pendrive/backups/`hostname` (use key number 0, so the encrypted Master Key by you will be overwritten) # geli setkey -n 0 -k /mnt/pendrive/keys/`hostname` /dev/ad0s1e (allow the user to enter his passphrase) Enter new passphrase: Reenter new passphrase: As you can see they have implemented a system where the root user has a master passphrase that can be entered and used to change the user's encrypted data or passphrase. The geli manpage can be read in full here: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=geli&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+8.2-RELEASE&format=html And the source code for geli can be found here: http://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/head/sys/geom/eli/ I have contacted the author of the code, Pawel Jakub Dawidek, about geli in the past, and he is quite friendly. I'm sure that if you did not want to reuse the code due to its BSD rather than GPL license, he may be able to at least give you a pointer as to how to go about implementing this feature. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579876 Title: encrypted home directory isn't mounted if password changed by another user To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-utils/+bug/579876/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 714804] [NEW] Menus in KDE do not get drawn properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel This is a bug that I found reported to KDE's bugzilla that affects me. In rekonq if you have desktop effects on (KDE 4.6.0/Kubuntu 10.10), specifically the shadow and blur effects, the wrench menu in the upper right corner does not draw when you click the wrench. The menu is there, but it is invisible. The submenus appear when you mouse over them. Also, the right click menu does the same thing. Now, this bug was reported on KDE and later closed because it was solved by an upgrade of the xf86-video-intel driver to 2.14.0. Once the driver is updated to that version the problem dissapears according to the last post at the end of that bug report. The report is here (along with all the duplicates): https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=247839 Duplicates: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=256363 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=253938 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255175 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=262855 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259608 I tried to verify that this is true by upgrading my own intel driver to 2.14.0, but I ran into a problem when I installed the driver. So, I asked for help on the driver's mailing list. That request is here: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/intel-gfx/2011-January/009265.html The response to this request was silence. Noone even acknowledged that I asked a question on the list. So, then I posted the same question here on launchpad because I figured that someone here would have had experience installing the 2.14.0 driver or compiling it etc. That question is here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+question/142372 The response to that question also was silence. As if I had not even asked the question at all. Then I figured that I might try asking someone who clearly HAS compiled 2.14.0 and installed it successfully. So, i contacted that canonical programmer who compiled the version of this driver in the unofficial PPA. Again, silence. Not even acknowledgement that I had sent him an email. So, here I am opening a bug about this. Hopefully someone will at least look at this bug report. The KDE people were very responsive, but the problem was not with KDE. I also noticed that natty is now using 2.14.0 so if someone can confirm that Kubuntu natty does not exhibit this bug, that would be great. Then the package in maverick should be updated to 2.14.0 My setup is Kubuntu 10.10 KDE 4.6.0 xf86-video-intel 2.12.0 ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/714804 Title: Menus in KDE do not get drawn properly -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 790840] [NEW] Plasma freeze after closing a VPN connection
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings This is an upstream bug that has apparently been fixed, but the fix has not trickled down to natty updates yet. It is a very severe crash that locks everything up, so it would be nice to see the fix in updates. I will connect this bug to the upstream bug. The description of the problem is as follows: I setup a VPN, either PPTP or OpenVPN using Kubuntu's KDE system settings (or through Network Manager, the outcome is the same). After connecting to the VPN, when I try to disconnect, plasma locks up, and I have to reboot. [Bug 786581] [NEW] Redundant backports origins
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kpackagekit After upgrade to Natty, I noticed a detail about the package origins that was confusing. The lines in /etc/apt/sources.list for backports were removed, but the comments about them above them were not removed. This led me to think that I needed to put them back in. Once I had done that, I noticed that there was another origin in the list for backports, which was being added by the "unsupported updates" checkbox in the updates tab of the edit origins box. So, there are two problems here. The lines in the configuration file should be commented or uncommented depending on that checkbox. another redundant origin should not be added by the checkbox thus creating two different origins for the same thing. Second, when the checkbox is checked, you can't uncheck it. The only way to uncheck it is to uncheck the box for the appropriate line in the main window of kpackage kit for "origin of packages" ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: kpackagekit 0.6.3.3-0ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic 2.6.38.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-8-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Sun May 22 11:08:28 2011 EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Release i386 (20101007) ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: kpackagekit UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to natty on 2011-05-22 (0 days ago) ** Affects: kpackagekit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 natty -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kpackagekit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786581 Title: Redundant backports origins -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 759212] [NEW] Password change in user management does not prompt for confirmation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: userconfig If you use the userconfig module to change a user's password, there is only one opportunity to type the password. [Bug 759319] [NEW] Can't mount encrypted home after using userconfig to change password
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: userconfig There needs to be a warning that you cannot use the userconfig module to change a user's password if they are using an encrypted home directory. The reason is that this module runs suid root. Therefore it does not properly change the password used to encrypt the users home directory. This bug is related, but not a duplicate of Bug #579876 Perhaps this should be a priority because it is one of two utilities in System Settings that a new user would think to use to change their password if they did not know about command line utilities. [Bug 579876] Re: encrypted home directory doesn't mount after password change
This bug is very critical. It also happens when you change a password using the user management module in KDE's system settings. When you use system settings it asks for the admin password then it runs the password change as root. The next time you login you're hosed. You have to drop down to console and change your password back because the home directory stays encrypted by your old password. Bad, bad, bad. All methods of changing a password should do EXACTLY the same thing or set of things. If you have more than one person on a server, you could lock someone out just by changing their password as root (which could happen if that user forgot his password and called you to have i reset).
