[Bug 976159] [NEW] Error while updating using muon: Another application seems to be using the package system at this time

2012-04-07 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Muon refuses to perform the current update to my system. I am trying to let it
perform the April KDE updates from the kubuntu backports archive. When I click
"Full Upgrade" then "Apply Changes" the update fails with the following error:
"Another application seems to be using the package system at this time. You
must close all other package managers before you will be able to install or
remove any packages."

I ran "ps -efl | egrep 'apt|dpkg'" and the only process that shows up is:
4 S root 2393 1 0 80 0 - 20790 poll_s 15:20 ?00:00:00
/usr/bin/python /usr/share/apt-xapian-index/update-apt-xapian-index-dbus

Killing that process does not help.

I have tried the following, all fail to correct the problem:
1) sudo dpkg --configure -a
2) Logout
3) Reboot
4) All possible combinations of the above.

The only way to get past this is to use terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

After that, the problem goes away.

[Bug 856434] [NEW] Plugin upgrade via package management fails without purge

2011-09-22 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

For the past three versions of the flash plugin installer, the install
does not install properly. The package upgrade shows up in the
automatic upgrades from the security upgrades repository. The package
gets installed without visible errors, but once installed, the flash
plugin does not appear at all in chrome/chromium's list of installed
plugins. In fact, no flash plugin is listed at all. Chrome is not
running when the install happens.

The only way to fix this is to apt-get purge flashplugin-installer and
then install it again. After that, everything shows up in chrome
properly.

[Bug 982032] Re: package-data-downloader user.d hook relies on gksudo, not present on Kubuntu

2012-06-14 Thread Robert Simmons
I am still affected by this bug, but I don't even have update-notifier
installed at all:

update-notifier:
  Installed: (none)

I would rather not install this simply to get rid of this annoying popup since
it wants to install all of the following packages as well:
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  apport-gtk aptdaemon-data gir1.2-dbusmenu-glib-0.4 gir1.2-dbusmenu-gtk-0.4

[Bug 902651] [NEW] rtkit-daemon does not obey timezone configuration for logging

2011-12-10 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

If you look at the syslog on a machine running Ubuntu 11.10 you will
discover that the rtkit-daemon does not recognize the system's timezone
configuration. If you have set the system's clock to UTC and then have
a timezone set so that local time is used everywhere, look at
/var/log/syslog and see the difference between all other log entries and
the rtkit-daemon entries. The rtkit ones log the time in UTC and the
rest log the time in local time. Here is an example log with one entry
before and one entry after the rtkit-daemon log entries to accentuate
the problem:

[Bug 920666] [NEW] Muon Package Manager hangs during update after fresh install

2012-01-23 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

I installed a fresh copy of Kubuntu 11.10 from this ISO image:
kubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64.iso

Then right after install and the first boot the package update available
icon is visible in the tray. It says that there are a number of
packages that need to be updated, so I select full upgrade, and apply
changes.

After it downloads the files, it starts to install the packages and
hangs. If you click on the K menu, there are no longer any icons at all
for anything under applications.

I started the install fresh again, and the same exact thing happened. I
decided not to use the muon gui tool the third time, and from the
command line ran "sudo apt-get update" then "sudo apt-get upgrade".
Everything worked flawlessly.

I have tried to test this again in a virtualbox VM. The exact same
problem is reproducible every single time.

[Bug 920676] [NEW] Logout in Kubuntu ends with black screen

2012-01-23 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

With a fresh install of Kubuntu 11.10 and all packages up to date, after
you logout, you get a black screen. You can mouse over the username and
password fields and enter your password again and login, but the screen

The only workaround is to set the variable Terminate-server = true in

[Bug 915235] Re: muon-installer crash

2012-01-23 Thread Robert Simmons
I have run into this in a clean install on bare metal in addition to a
clean install in virtualbox. It hangs at a different percentage each
time, but I think that's just because the two installs were days apart
and the package selection was different the second time.

I have a slightly different workaround from the one in the previous
post, but it is very similar. I just entered the following from
terminal:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

This is only a workaround that works if you have NOT hit the bug. This
works instead of even trying to use the GUI tools in muon.

[Bug 274150] Re: Help functions return error message when help isn't installed

2012-03-01 Thread Robert Simmons
The issue is still valid. The problem is that kdepim is part of the
Kubuntu OS, and a fresh install does not include kdepim-doc. In an
earlier post echidnaman had said that there is disk space now and to
reconsider. I propose looking into making the kdepim package recommend
kdepim-doc. This would fix the problem completely. Another suggested
solution is to prompt for document installation the first time kontact
or any part of the kdepim set of applications is run.

[Bug 844485] [NEW] apt-get man page language/grammar improvement

2011-09-07 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

In the apt-get man page, under the heading "autoremove," the grammar can be
improved. At the moment it reads "autoremove is used to remove packages that
were automatically installed to satisfy dependencies for some package and that
are no more needed." A better version is:
"autoremove is used to remove packages that were automatically installed to
satisfy dependencies for another package and are no longer needed."

[Bug 844494] [NEW] gnome-sudoku does not start in Kubuntu, requires python-gconf

2011-09-07 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

After a clean install of Kubuntu 11.04, I installed the gnome-sudoku
package using KPackageKit (kubuntu's graphical software installer). The
game does not start. I tried "sudo apt-get purge gnome-sudoku" and a
reinstall of the package with no change in the results. If I run the
program from a terminal window I get the following error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/games/gnome-sudoku", line 67, in

It seems that a required dependency is python-gconf, and it is not being
installed for some reason. A workaround is:
"sudo apt-get install python-gconf"

[Bug 885555] [NEW] Apper does not display as installed all installed packages

2011-11-02 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

I noticed that not all packages installed on my system are displayed as
being installed in Apper (green check mark next to the package name in
the leftmost column).

Specifically, I installed postgresql-9.1 using the package of the same
name listed in Apper. There is a dependency of postgresql-client-9.1
and it is installed when you install the main package. However, in the
list of packages in Apper there is no checkbox next to its name showing
that it is installed.

I have taken a screen capture of Apper showing that postgresql-9.1 is
installed, and I have selected its dependencies which shows that the
package postgresql-client-9.1 is installed because it has a green check
next to its name, but at the same time there is no check whatsoever in
the main list of packages above. I made the window large enough so that
you may see all three places at the same time to make the bug obvious.

Here is the output of apt-cache policy postgresql-client-9.1
postgresql-client-9.1:
  Installed: 9.1.1-1
  Candidate: 9.1.1-1
  Version table:
 *** 9.1.1-1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So, it is definitely installed, but that fact is missing from Apper.

[Bug 878607] [NEW] Kubuntu software management regresstions

2011-10-19 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

The new software management system, Muon, does not provide the list of
files in a package, the package's dependencies, and which packages
depend on it. All of this information was provided by the former
package management front end, KPackageKit. This should not be
considered a wish list bug, this is a regression.

[Bug 796886] [NEW] policy-kit-1 KDE crash on shutdown/logout

2011-06-13 Thread Robert Simmons
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 728595 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/728595

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: polkit-kde-1

This is a crash that is difficult to reproduce, but happens
periodically.

I am using Kubuntu 11.04 and KDE 4.6.4 and the version of polkit-kde-1
is 0.99.0-0ubuntu3

Sometimes when I shutdown or logout, policy kit crashes. It is not
clear what causes it, because I am doing something different before
shutdown/logout each time. However, there are many, many people who
have reported the same crash. For more in-depth info and reams of
backtrace, see KDE bug 258916.

Here is the most recent backtrace:

[Bug 797821] [NEW] Browser plugin crashes with symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libvlcplugin.so: undefined symbol: NPP_Initialize

2011-06-15 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-plugin-vlc

When you try view something that plays through the VLC plugin, it crashes with
the following error:
/opt/google/chrome/chrome --type=plugin
--plugin-path=/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libvlcplugin.so --lang=en-US
--channel=3040.0xe373420.1825996355: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libvlcplugin.so: undefined symbol: NPP_Initialize

This problem has been patched over in gentoo, it seems. I don't know if
this patch has trickled upstream yet, but it has definitely not trickled
downstream to Ubuntu. This is a showstopped of a crash since it makes
VLC unusable in firefox 4, chrome, and chromium.

The patch is there on the gentoo bug tracker page:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361263

I am using Kubuntu 11.04 and KDE 4.6.4 and VLC 1.1.9

The version of mozilla-plugin-vlc is 1.1.9-1ubuntu1.1

Also, discussion of the bug can be found on the VLC forums here:
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=90239

2011-06-16 Thread Robert Simmons
I would like to test the package, but I am running Kubuntu. What do I need to
add (as far as pin-priorities, etc) to /etc/apt/preferences if I am also using
the following?
1) regular Ubuntu backports
2) Kubuntu updates
3) Kubuntu backports

Perhaps, an additional example for Kubuntu people should be added to

[Bug 798519] [NEW] OK button in "Edit Bookmark" window missing a corner

2011-06-16 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chromium-browser

The OK button in the "Edit Bookmark" window is missing a corner. This
window can be found by clicking on the star button at the far right of
the URL box, then clicking the "Edit" button. I have attached a screen
capture of the problem. I am using Kubuntu 11.04 and it seems like the
button is part of Kubuntu's theme for Chromium, so perhaps there is a
corrupted graphic somewhere in Kubuntu's theme. The version of KDE is
4.6.4 and Chromium is 12.0.742.91

[Bug 515138] Re: kded4 (lucid, amd64) defunct on latop

2011-06-16 Thread Robert Simmons
After disabling each of those notifications in the screen capture above
one-by-one there was no effect on the creation of the kded zombies.
Still every time I close the lid of the laptop I get a new zombie or
two. However, there is a notification that occurs: "KDE Power
Management System" "The screen is being locked"

After a few days of use opening and closing the screen on the laptop I
must reboot or the groans and incessant calls for "braains!" from
the zombies becomes too much to handle. ;)

[Bug 799460] [NEW] nspluginviewer crashes when attempting to display flash content in Akregator

2011-06-19 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: akregator

Version: 1.6.6 (using KDE 4.6.4)
OS:Linux

If you load a feed, and the articles that the feed points to on the web contain
flash content, the plugin, nspluginviewer, that Akregator uses to display that
flash content crashes every time it tries to display the content.

For example most all of the articles on this feed have flash content that
crashes the plugin:
http://exiledonline.com/feed/rss/

Also of note is that it does not crash immediately if the flash content is not
initially visible in the display window. It only crashes when you scroll down
and make the flash content visible.

I have the flash plugin from Adobe installed, perhaps there should be a way to
choose to use it rather than this one that is crashing?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open Akregator
Load this feed:
http://exiledonline.com/feed/rss/
Follow one of the articles to the website using the link in the feed article.
If the flash content is not visible, scroll down the page, when it is visible
the plugin will crash.

Actual Results:
Segmentation fault every time

Expected Results:
Properly displayed flash content

Here is the output of the backtrace:

Application: nspluginviewer (nspluginviewer), signal: Segmentation fault

[Bug 820188] [NEW] Severe system freeze due to akonadi shortly after login (not just GPU lockup, but whole enchilada)

2011-08-02 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

I noticed a very severe freeze that began recently. I had done a couple of
things simultaneously, so it took a bit of work to triangulate akonadi as the
culprit. My user account was only usable if I logged into the console due to
the freeze, and it was not a GPU lockup that I know of, because I could not ssh
into the machine from the network. The freeze is the whole system, all work is
lost if it was not saved.

I was able to fix the problem by renaming ~/.config/akonadi to something else
then logout/login. Perhaps the akonadi database had become corrupted in some
way that caused the machine to lock up.

It is interesting because I have not used any software that connects or uses
akonadi on this particular machine.

I have saved the offending .config/akonadi directory and can make a tar file of
it if a developer wants it to test what is happening.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Use the corrupted config that is attached to this bug report.

Actual Results:
Severe freeze of the whole system, not just X.

Expected Results:
No freeze

I have attached the offending config file.

Versions:
Kubuntu: 11.04

[Bug 579876] Re: encrypted home directory isn't mounted if password changed by another user

2011-08-06 Thread Robert Simmons
I have been exploring the geli encryption functions in FreeBSD, and I
found that they already have a fully functioning encryption system for
whole volume encryption that does not have the problem listed here in
this bug. I will quote the pertinent section of their man page here.

>From geli(8) in FreeBSD 8.2:
You are the security-person in your company. Create an encrypted
provider for use by the user, but remember that users forget their
passphrases, so back Master Key up with your own random key:

   # dd if=/dev/random of=/mnt/pendrive/keys/`hostname` bs=64 count=1
   # geli init -P -K /mnt/pendrive/keys/`hostname` /dev/ad0s1e
   # geli backup /dev/ad0s1e /mnt/pendrive/backups/`hostname`
(use key number 0, so the encrypted Master Key by you will be
overwritten)
   # geli setkey -n 0 -k /mnt/pendrive/keys/`hostname` /dev/ad0s1e
(allow the user to enter his passphrase)
   Enter new passphrase:
   Reenter new passphrase:

As you can see they have implemented a system where the root user has a master
passphrase that can be entered and used to change the user's encrypted data or
passphrase.

The geli manpage can be read in full here:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=geli&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+8.2-RELEASE&format=html

And the source code for geli can be found here:
http://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/head/sys/geom/eli/

I have contacted the author of the code, Pawel Jakub Dawidek, about geli
in the past, and he is quite friendly. I'm sure that if you did not
want to reuse the code due to its BSD rather than GPL license, he may be
able to at least give you a pointer as to how to go about implementing
this feature.

[Bug 840708] [NEW] Konsole only redraws the terminal if the mouse is moving.

2011-09-03 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Version: 2.7 (using KDE 4.7.0)
OS:Linux

If you have text constantly scrolling down a terminal window in Konsole, the
screen only redraws the scrolling text while there is mouse movement.

If you stop moving the mouse, the text stops.

On another machine that I tried this on, it is less pronounced, but still
happens off and on. On that machine, it will stop if you click outside the
window and only start again after moving the mouse over Konsole's window.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
I have written a small c program that displays integers in sequence in an
infinite loop. You can seen the problem if you compile this program and run
the a.out in a konsole window.

Actual Results:
The text freezes and the Konsole window is not redrawn until you move the
mouse.

Expected Results:
Constantly scrolling text with no interuption.

OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.38-11-generic
Compiler: gcc

I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 with KDE 4.7.0

[Bug 851327] [NEW] Some hidden system tray icons are indented to the right and some are not

2011-09-15 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Some of the hidden tray icons are indented to the right for some reason
after login. Later on some align properly and others do not. I'm not
sure what controls it.

It happens every time I login, and I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 with KDE
4.7.0.

The way to reproduce it is to login then click the little triangle at
the right end of the system tray just after logging in to show all the
hidden tray icons.

Please look at the screen capture attached to this report for an example
of exactly what it looks like.

[Bug 714804] [NEW] Menus in KDE do not get drawn properly

2011-02-07 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is a bug that I found reported to KDE's bugzilla that affects me.
In rekonq if you have desktop effects on (KDE 4.6.0/Kubuntu 10.10),
specifically the shadow and blur effects, the wrench menu in the upper
right corner does not draw when you click the wrench. The menu is
there, but it is invisible. The submenus appear when you mouse over
them. Also, the right click menu does the same thing.

Now, this bug was reported on KDE and later closed because it was solved by an
upgrade of the xf86-video-intel driver to 2.14.0. Once the driver is updated
to that version the problem dissapears according to the last post at the end of
that bug report. The report is here (along with all the duplicates):
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=247839

Duplicates:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=256363
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=253938
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255175
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=262855
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259608

I tried to verify that this is true by upgrading my own intel driver to 2.14.0,
but I ran into a problem when I installed the driver. So, I asked for help on
the driver's mailing list. That request is here:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/intel-gfx/2011-January/009265.html

The response to this request was silence. Noone even acknowledged that
I asked a question on the list.

So, then I posted the same question here on launchpad because I figured that
someone here would have had experience installing the 2.14.0 driver or
compiling it etc. That question is here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+question/142372

The response to that question also was silence. As if I had not even
asked the question at all.

Then I figured that I might try asking someone who clearly HAS compiled
2.14.0 and installed it successfully. So, i contacted that canonical
programmer who compiled the version of this driver in the unofficial
PPA.

Again, silence. Not even acknowledgement that I had sent him an email.

So, here I am opening a bug about this. Hopefully someone will at least
look at this bug report. The KDE people were very responsive, but the
problem was not with KDE.

I also noticed that natty is now using 2.14.0 so if someone can confirm
that Kubuntu natty does not exhibit this bug, that would be great. Then
the package in maverick should be updated to 2.14.0

My setup is
Kubuntu 10.10
KDE 4.6.0
xf86-video-intel 2.12.0

[Bug 790801] [NEW] "Apply" button in Settings never grays out

2011-05-31 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kgpg

In KGpg in Settings >> Configure KGpg... The "Apply" button is always available
to press. Even if you have not made any configuration changes it can still be
pressed. And if you press it, it does not gray out, it remains pressable.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open KGpg
In the Settings menu select "Configure KGpg..."
Click the "Apply" button
or alternatively:
make a change to the config
Click the "Apply" button

Actual Results:
Apply button is still pressable no matter what.

Expected Results:
When the Settings window opens, Apply should be grayed out. If you change
something, it becomes available. Then if you want to apply the changes you
made, you can press it, and after that it grays out.

I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 with KDE 4.6.3

The version of KGpg is 2.5.0
The specific Ubuntu package is 4:4.6.3-0ubuntu1~ppa3

[Bug 790840] [NEW] Plasma freeze after closing a VPN connection

2011-05-31 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

This is an upstream bug that has apparently been fixed, but the fix has
not trickled down to natty updates yet. It is a very severe crash that
locks everything up, so it would be nice to see the fix in updates. I
will connect this bug to the upstream bug.

The description of the problem is as follows: I setup a VPN, either PPTP
or OpenVPN using Kubuntu's KDE system settings (or through Network
Manager, the outcome is the same). After connecting to the VPN, when I
try to disconnect, plasma locks up, and I have to reboot.

I am using Kubuntu 11.04 and KDE 4.6.3; the version of systemsettings is
4:4.6.3-0ubuntu1~ppa3

[Bug 786581] [NEW] Redundant backports origins

2011-05-22 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

After upgrade to Natty, I noticed a detail about the package origins
that was confusing. The lines in /etc/apt/sources.list for backports
were removed, but the comments about them above them were not removed.
This led me to think that I needed to put them back in. Once I had done
that, I noticed that there was another origin in the list for backports,
which was being added by the "unsupported updates" checkbox in the
updates tab of the edit origins box.

So, there are two problems here. The lines in the configuration file
should be commented or uncommented depending on that checkbox. another
redundant origin should not be added by the checkbox thus creating two
different origins for the same thing.

Second, when the checkbox is checked, you can't uncheck it. The only
way to uncheck it is to uncheck the box for the appropriate line in the
main window of kpackage kit for "origin of packages"

[Bug 786693] [NEW] Apply button in KMail's Setting > Configure Filters never grays out after being clicked

2011-05-22 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

If you open KMail select "Configure filters" under the "Settings" menu you will
notice that the "Apply" button is available even though the window just opened

buttons should. Also, if you change something and hit it, it still does not
gray out.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open Kontact, then open KMail. Select:
Settings > Configure filters
Click "Apply"

Actual Results:
Apply button is still available

Expected Results:

[Bug 786756] [NEW] KAddressbook docs missing

2011-05-22 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim-doc

The documentation for KAddressbook is missing. There is an entry for
KAddressbook in the Help Center (see screen capture), but it returns an
error that the document is missing. Also, if you click on the Kontact
handbook and browse to the link that should put you through to the
KAddressbook handbook it is missing there too.

I am using kdepim-docs 4.4.10 and kontact 4.4.10

KDE 4.6.3 and Kubuntu 11.04

[Bug 759212] [NEW] Password change in user management does not prompt for confirmation

2011-04-12 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: userconfig

If you use the userconfig module to change a user's password, there is
only one opportunity to type the password. There is no second
verification, so if you mistype you won't know until that user tries her
new password for the first time.

After typing in the password it should ask for confirmation.
Alternatively there should be a checkbox for "Show Password" so that as
you type it you can check it if you so desire.

Ideally both options should be included.

I have sent information about this through various channels:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-discuss/2011-January/012400.html

[Bug 759319] [NEW] Can't mount encrypted home after using userconfig to change password

2011-04-12 Thread Robert Simmons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: userconfig

There needs to be a warning that you cannot use the userconfig module to
change a user's password if they are using an encrypted home directory.
The reason is that this module runs suid root. Therefore it does not
properly change the password used to encrypt the users home directory.
This bug is related, but not a duplicate of Bug #579876

Perhaps this should be a priority because it is one of two utilities in
System Settings that a new user would think to use to change their
password if they did not know about command line utilities. If they
choose this one, they are then locked out of their home directory.

I am using Kubuntu 10.10 with KDE 4.6.2a
userconf version is 0.9.0-0ubuntu7

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 579876] Re: encrypted home directory doesn't mount after password change

2011-01-22 Thread Robert Simmons
This bug is very critical. It also happens when you change a password
using the user management module in KDE's system settings. When you use
system settings it asks for the admin password then it runs the password
change as root. The next time you login you're hosed. You have to drop
down to console and change your password back because the home directory
stays encrypted by your old password.

Bad, bad, bad. All methods of changing a password should do EXACTLY the
same thing or set of things. If you have more than one person on a
server, you could lock someone out just by changing their password as
root (which could happen if that user forgot his password and called you
to have i reset).

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 + current patches with KDE 4.5.5.
