[Bug 292876] Re: sata timeout - x86_64

2008-12-07 Thread Richard Ayotte
I can easily reproduce the bug by simply initiating heavy disk activity
such as copying multiple files simultaneously.

[Bug 301273] Re: apache2 crashed with SIGSEGV in sapi_getenv()

2008-11-23 Thread Richard Ayotte
I found the problem. I installed the Zend Framework and was trying to
include the Zend Framework in the include path. PHP didn't like that
very much.

;[Zend]
;include_path = ${include_path} ":/usr/share/php/libzend-framework-php"

PHP didn't like that very much.

Feel free to close.

[Bug 194213] Re: Dim files when you 'cut' them for later 'paste' action

2009-06-22 Thread Richard Ayotte
seanh, I really like your ideas. Initially we could simply have a
notification that says something like "10 files copied to clipboard" or
"10 files cut to clipboard". Later, a compiz animation of the ghost
icons that have been cut/copied could fly to a clipboard in the
notification area. The copy and cut could also be differentiated with
different sounds.

2008-10-04 Thread Richard Ayotte
I'm not sure how canberra-gtk-play is called so I renamed it to

the following content:

#!/bin/sh

G_DEBUG=gc-friendly
valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=40
--log-file=/tmp/valgrind-canberra-gtk-play.log canberra-gtk-play.real $@

[Bug 309901] Re: SATA timeout during heavy disk activity

2008-12-21 Thread Richard Ayotte
Yes, that's the really weird thing. When I copy files from ata3.00 (WDC
WD3200AAKS-00VYA0) to ata1.00:(Hitachi HDS721010KLA330)  I get messages
from ata5.00: (ATAPI DVD A DH20A4H) and I'm not even using the DVD
drive at the time.

Here's a new dmesg log with a little more information. The last dmesg
was taken after a reboot so it didn't contain much. The new log
indicates that the problem might not be with the drives at all.

Will the changes in 2.6.27.15 be merged because I think the following
indicates that the problem has been fixed.

  sata_nv: rename nv_nf2_hardreset()

[Bug 133786] Re: Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany

2007-10-25 Thread Richard Ayotte
The corruption problems that I initially experienced went away until
after this morning's update. I can't even boot into my system because of
bus errors on the ttys. Could the libc6 update cause this? I'm not sure
how to repair now. Here's the output of xfs_check:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# xfs_check /dev/sdb1
agi unlinked bucket 44 is 96428 in ag 7 (inode=939620524)
agi unlinked bucket 50 is 96434 in ag 7 (inode=939620530)
allocated inode 939620524 has 0 link count
allocated inode 939620530 has 0 link count

This bug is definitely beyond Firefox or Epiphany and more likely a
libc6, kernel or driver problem. We could probably rule out bad hardware
at this point.

[Bug 137179] Re: 2.6.1-1ubuntu3 makes apps crash with Bus error

2007-10-25 Thread Richard Ayotte
I can confirm that reinstalling libc6_2.6.1-1ubuntu10_amd64.deb fixed
the corrupted libc6 files but I'm not convinced that the corruption is
caused by libc6 because corruption of other packages have occurred as
well. At first I thought the corruption was caused by incompatible
hardware but I installed a new hard drive from a different manufacturer
and the problem persists. I then thought that the ADMA feature on
nforce4 was broken so I disabled it in /etc/modprobe.d/options-custom
with options sata_nv adma=0 but after this morning's break, I can
confirm that disabling ADMA does not help either.

What's the next step?

[Bug 133786] Re: Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany

2007-10-26 Thread Richard Ayotte
I can confirm:

   - Filesystem does not matter. I've had corruption on Reiser3 and xfs
   - I've had to reinstall many different packages. The bug is not specific to
a single package.
   - Corruption occurs on i386 and AMD64.

I'm not sure about:

   - Hardware. The problem did not appear to be as severe when I disabled ADMA
on my nforce4 chipset. We need to find out which other chipsets are affected.
   - I've had corruption on Maxtor (SATA) and Western Digital (SATA2) drives so
we can probably rule out drive brand. We need to find out if SCSI and IDE
drives are affected too.
   - Corruption occurs at the filesystem level. I'm not sure if a userspace app
can do that without a bug in kernel space.

How do we get this bug on the radar. Importance should be set to at
least Major and status to Confirmed since so many people have reported
it.

Possibly relataded bugs: #146636, #137179, #90004.

Yes, you're right.

I noticed that /usr/bin/vmnet-natd was running so I killed it and the
re-install worked afterwards. My VM was not completely shutdown when I
initially re-installed and it caused the vmnet-natd to hang on to the vmnet
module.

Thanks again,

[Bug 156169] Re: Cannot change volume while on logon screen

2008-05-01 Thread Richard Ayotte
Try the following:

Set the desired default volume with gnome-volume-control and store that
state as the default by running:

$ sudo alsactl store

To reset the volume to the default when the user logs out:

Create a shell script named alsa with the following content:

#!/bin/sh
/sbin/alsactl restore
exit 0

Put it in /etc/gdm/PostSession

Oops, I posted too fast.

Disregard what I said about creating script named alsa. Simply add the

[Bug 133786] Re: Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany

2007-09-09 Thread Richard Ayotte
Thank you Bret, that was very helpful. I found the following corrupted
files on a newly installed Tribe 5. / is XFS and /boot is Reiser3.

debsums: checksum mismatch firefox file /usr/lib/firefox/components/libuconv.so
debsums: checksum mismatch firefox file
/usr/lib/firefox/components/libgklayout.so
debsums: checksum mismatch gnome-utils file
/usr/share/gnome/help/baobab/fr/figures/baobab_fullscan.png
debsums: checksum mismatch libc6 file /usr/lib/gconv/libCNS.so
debsums: checksum mismatch ttf-dejavu-extra file
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSansCondensed.ttf

And on another system, all Reiser3 I found:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# cat debsums.txt|grep mismatch|cut -d ' ' -f4|uniq|wc -l

140!!!

So I quickly reinstalled with:

debsums -s &> debsums.txt
cat debsums.txt|grep mismatch|cut -d ' ' -f4|uniq|xargs apt-get -y --force-yes
--reinstall install

And everything seems to be OK now. Gutsy is very crashy with the desktop
effects enabled so it might explain the corruption from all the
rebooting. I thought Reiser and XFS were supposed to protect me from
that so there might be a bug in the kernel. I have also disabled the
write cache on my drives with hdparm -W0 /dev/sda as recommended by the
SGI folks to see if it helps .

My /etc/hdparm.conf now contains the following additions.

/dev/sda {
write_cache = off
}

/dev/sdb {
write_cache = off
}

[Bug 185214] Re: deluge can't start after out of disk space

2008-01-23 Thread Richard Ayotte
I tried to install Hardy a few weeks ago and failed miserably. Can I
disable the ExtraStats plugin in the current version? If not, what is
the best way to upgrade the package without causing a flood of
dependency upgrades. I don't mind upgrading a few packages if it does
not cause too many problems.

[Bug 150471] Re: [Gutsy] high processor activity after logging out and then logging in again

2008-01-06 Thread Richard Ayotte
WARNING: There are side effects to the following workaround so use with
caution.

Here's another method to clean up a users session after they log out.

Make sure you have the slay program installed and in
/etc/gdm/PostSession/Default add before exit 0:

/usr/sbin/slay -clean $USER

if you are certain that nautilus is the only app hanging, instead use:

/usr/bin/killall nautilus -user $USER

[Bug 90773] Re: [apport] totem crashed with SIGFPE

2007-03-09 Thread Richard Ayotte
I just discovered that it works when the Audio Output preference is set
to Stereo. It crashes when it is set to 4-channel, 4.1-channel,
5.0-channel, 5.1-channel and AC3. I can get it to start the DVD in
stereo and then change the audio output to 4, 4.1, 5, 5.1, AC3 but the
sound is terrible in these other; it sounds like a scratched CD.

I'm not sure why the custom ALSA settings in my home directory are causing
gstreamer stop working so I'm going to look into that next.

Thanks again for helping me troubleshoot this.

Re: [Bug 90773] Re: [apport] totem crashed with SIGFPE

2007-03-23 Thread Richard Ayotte
I didn't realize that I was using OSS. My .xine/config has the following
entry:

# audio driver to use
# { auto null alsa oss arts esd file none }, default: 0
#audio.driver:auto

And I guess that xine picked oss over alsa? I would much prefer the use of
alsa.

I updated my system since reporting this bug and now I can play DVDs in 4
channel audio without crashing.

The following packages were updated:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  1339922 2007-03-11 21:03
totem-xine_2.18.0-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

[Bug 95284] Rhythmbox 0.9.8 has no gstreamer profiles in Fiesty

2007-03-23 Thread Richard Ayotte
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When I try to play an mp3 in Rhythmbox, it quickly and continuously goes
through my whole library without actually playing anything, showing a
red circle beside each song in turn and not stop until the app is
killed. The problem started when I upgraded from Edgy to Fiesty and I
have a very similar problem with Banshee so the problem might be
gstreamer related.

[Bug 445852] Re: devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart causes HSM Violations on SSD, and potential hardware death

2010-03-14 Thread Richard Ayotte
Setting libata.force=noncq fixed it for me. Disabling smart as describe
in the workaround or forcing pio4 had no effect.

Hardware: Acer Aspire One

Here's what I did.

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Change the line that says:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash libata.force=noncq"

sudo update-grub

reboot.

Oddly enough, I can't reproduce at the moment either. I did disable some
gnome-shell extensions since which might have caused this. I'll try a
few more combinations and report back.
