seanh, I really like your ideas. Initially we could simply have a notification that says something like "10 files copied to clipboard" or "10 files cut to clipboard". My system just crashed again but this time I managed to get more pertinent information. I was copying a dozen files from one directory to another on the same drive and each file was between 1 and 1.5 Gigs. The log gets interesting at about here. [Bug 309901] Re: SATA timeout during heavy disk activity
Yes, that's the really weird thing. When I copy files from ata3.00 (WDC WD3200AAKS-00VYA0) to ata1.00:(Hitachi HDS721010KLA330) I get messages from ata5.00: (ATAPI DVD A DH20A4H) and I'm not even using the DVD drive at the time. Here's a new dmesg log with a little more information. The last dmesg was taken after a reboot so it didn't contain much. The new log indicates that the problem might not be with the drives at all. The corruption problems that I initially experienced went away until after this morning's update. I can't even boot into my system because of bus errors on the ttys. Could the libc6 update cause this? I'm not sure how to repair now. [Bug 137179] Re: 2.6.1-1ubuntu3 makes apps crash with Bus error
I can confirm that reinstalling libc6_2.6.1-1ubuntu10_amd64.deb fixed the corrupted libc6 files but I'm not convinced that the corruption is caused by libc6 because corruption of other packages have occurred as well. At first I thought the corruption was caused by incompatible hardware but I installed a new hard drive from a different manufacturer and the problem persists. I then thought that the ADMA feature on nforce4 was broken so I disabled it in /etc/modprobe.d/options-custom with options sata_nv adma=0 but after this morning's break, I can confirm that disabling ADMA does not help either. [Bug 133786] Re: Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany
I can confirm: - Filesystem does not matter. I've had corruption on Reiser3 and xfs - I've had to reinstall many different packages. The bug is not specific to a single package. - Corruption occurs on i386 and AMD64. I'm not sure about: - Hardware. The problem did not appear to be as severe when I disabled ADMA on my nforce4 chipset. We need to find out which other chipsets are affected. - I've had corruption on Maxtor (SATA) and Western Digital (SATA2) drives so we can probably rule out drive brand. We need to find out if SCSI and IDE drives are affected too. - Corruption occurs at the filesystem level. I'm not sure if a userspace app can do that without a bug in kernel space. How do we get this bug on the radar. Importance should be set to at least Major and status to Confirmed since so many people have reported it. Yes, you're right. I noticed that /usr/bin/vmnet-natd was running so I killed it and the re-install worked afterwards. [Bug 90773] Re: [apport] totem crashed with SIGFPE
I just discovered that it works when the Audio Output preference is set to Stereo. It crashes when it is set to 4-channel, 4.1-channel, 5.0-channel, 5.1-channel and AC3. I can get it to start the DVD in stereo and then change the audio output to 4, 4.1, 5, 5.1, AC3 but the sound is terrible in these other; it sounds like a scratched CD. -- [apport] totem crashed with SIGFPE https://launchpad.net/bugs/90773 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
