2008-07-02 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

I get a lot of:

Jul 2 10:31:40 acerbus kcheckpass[27305]: pam_smbpass(kscreensaver:auth):
unrecognized option [missingok]
Jul 2 10:31:40 acerbus kcheckpass[27305]: pam_smbpass(kscreensaver:auth):
Cannot access samba password database, not running as root.

in my logs ever since the upgrade from gutsy to hardy. These happen when
I unlock kscreensaver.

[Bug 252826] [NEW] Regression: Machine freezes during bootup

2008-07-29 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

During bootup of linux-image-2.6.24-20-generic 2.6.24-20.37, the machine
would just "hang" after printing out the line:

Checking 'hlt' instructions... OK

linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic 2.6.24-19.36 does not exposte this
behaviour, thus it's a regression.

[Bug 262000] [NEW] Can't find initialization file gs_init.ps.

2008-08-27 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

ii ghostscript 8.61.dfsg.1-1ubuntu3 The GPL

$ gs -v

I don't get this. Why does dpkg report 8.61 if 8.63 is what "gs -v"
emits?

[Bug 382062] [NEW] graphics driver crashes, renders machine unresponsive to input

2009-05-31 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

During work, X just "locks up": No mouse movement, no keyboard input.
Cannot switch consoles, cannot use magic-sysrq-key.

I was not able to use "ubuntu-bug", since - when run via the network -
it wouldn't work! It kept collecting information and would never return
(xkbcomp would never exit)!

During that time I was able to login via network and found:

It wasn't clear that ubuntu-bug would return and do the right thing
after I killed the xkbcomp process it spawned...and that never returned.

[Bug 284973] [NEW] evince incorrectly named "document viewer"

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

evince reports in Help/About:

This makes it a tad bit hard to report bugs, since one doesn't easily
find out what "document viewer" is:

[Bug 284976] [NEW] evince doesn't print to PDF

2008-10-17 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

Evince lacks a print to PDF option. While other programs (eye of gnome
for example) can "print to file" in PDF format, evince only offers PS
support (see attached image).

Print to file has no PDF option (it's always PS)
the "PDF" printer only generates 0 byte size files.

Mind you, this all works in eye of gnome, where the print dialog does indeed
allow one to select PS or PDF format.

[Bug 285541] [NEW] [intrepid] login hangs in gdm and on the console

2008-10-18 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

This one is quite mysterious. I'm using intrepid.

gdm is being started up, I get the brownish screen with a rotating mousepointer
and that's it.
When I switch back to the console, I try to login as root. Username & password
are accepted, but after that I get no prompt.

When I switch to another console and login in as a non-privileged users
I still get no prompt, but the output has an additional "No new mail" at
the very bottom.

All I can do is to use CTRL-ALT-DEL, but then the machine will not
reboot (it will stop processes until it forcefully stops postfix, after
that it's dead).

Using Magic-Sysreq-Key I can kill all tasks using SIGTERM, and THEN I
can actually login in (on the console) again.

Switching back to 2.6.24-21-generic makes the machine work again,
whereas linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic will expose the broken behaviour.

[Bug 163213] Re: thunderbird 2.0 couldn't manage any attachment (pdf, archives..etc..).Every time i try to open a file attached to a message it can't be opened

2008-11-03 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
I have a similiar problem with
ii thunderbird 2.0.0.17+nobinonly-0ubu mail/news client with RSS
and integrated spam filter support

I performed several test and found out that ONLY Thunderbird (I tried
two other IMAP clients, evolution and Squirrelmail) doewnloads the
attachment only INCOMPLETE.

It's truncated at the very end. I tried several machines (32 Bit and 64
bit) and all of them expose the same behaviour.

It results in "short" attachments and subsequently programs like
eving/eog not being able to open TIFF attachments at all.

-rw-r--r-- 1 hildeb hildeb 52864 2008-10-31 14:39 broken-linux.TIF
-rw-r--r-- 1 hildeb hildeb 73845 2008-10-31 13:21 notbroken-outlook.TIF

I then used "od" to create a hexdump and used diff to see "what
changed":

-rw-r--r-- 1 hildeb hildeb 210468 2008-10-31 14:47 broken-linux.od
-rw-r--r-- 1 hildeb hildeb 294277 2008-10-31 14:47 notbroken-outlook.od

[Bug 287603] [NEW] Doesn't accept pkcs12 files

2008-10-22 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

While openvpn gladly accepts pkcs12 files:
pkcs12 client.p12

the network-manager-openvpn still insists on seperate files for ca,
cert, and key, e.g. like:

ca ca.crt
cert client.crt
key client.key

Please make the use of PKCS12 files possible. That way the users only
have 66.66% less things to configure (and less errors to make).

[Bug 285541] Re: [intrepid] login hangs in gdm and on the console

2008-10-24 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Some more details: I left a console open and poked around. I can
reliable make the system work again like this:

# /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart
 * Restarting system log daemon...
acpid: client connected from 9960[0:0]

[ OK ]

The message "acpid: client connected from 9960[0:0]" looks like an X display,
thus checked:

root 9960 1.0 4.7 126452 42624 tty7 Ss+ Oct23 14:59
/usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten
tcp vt7

But I don't understand why restarting syslogd would cause this to work
again.

[Bug 275120] [NEW] Atheros WLAN AR242x LED doesn't work

2008-09-27 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Public bug reported:

For the first time ever my Atheros AR242x WLAN (in an Acer Aspire One)
does indeed work with ath5k.

Hooray!

The card is shown as:

Capabilities: [140] Virtual Channel
Kernel driver in use: ath5k_pci
Kernel modules: ath_pci, ath5k

Everything works (even the kill switch on the computer) EXCEPT: The LEDs
don't work at all. The do work with madwifi, so I do know that it's an
LED and not just a black hole.

[Bug 277447] Re: script failed: could not execute external program

2008-10-06 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
openvpn is started like this:

#!/bin/sh
cd `dirname $0`
/usr/sbin/openvpn --up "./client.sh up" --down "./client.sh down" --config
client.conf

Using absolute pathnames didn't change anything.

client.conf:
===

client
dev tun
proto udp
remote server.example.com 1194
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
pkcs12 client.p12
ns-cert-type server
comp-lzo
verb 3
auth-user-pass
reneg-sec 0
auth-nocache
mute-replay-warnings

setting the script-security parameter didn't have any effect, I tried
values 0-3, no change, just like the upstream bugreport indicates.

4:3.5.9really3.3.6-kde4.1.1-0ubuntu2: amd64 i386

So, the package in intrepid is actually OLDER than hardy-backports.

The version I have here is:
ii kfax 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy1 G3/G4 fax viewer for KDE

The bug is still present in 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy1

Strictly speaking is "dump" for ext2 only, BUT it also dumps ext3 - thus
"4.4bsd dump and restore for ext2 filesystems" is a bit of a misnomer.
Since it dumps both ext2 and ext3, it should also dump ext4.
