Some more details: I left a console open and poked around. I can reliable make the system work again like this:
# /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart * Restarting system log daemon... acpid: client connected from 9960[0:0] [ OK ] The message "acpid: client connected from 9960[0:0]" looks like an X display, thus checked: root 9960 1.0 4.7 126452 42624 tty7 Ss+ Oct23 14:59 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 But I don't understand why restarting syslogd would cause this to work again. -- [intrepid] login hangs in gdm and on the console https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/285541 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
