Some more details: I left a console open and poked around. I can
reliable make the system work again like this:

# /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart
 * Restarting system log daemon...
acpid: client connected from 9960[0:0]

[ OK ]


The message "acpid: client connected from 9960[0:0]" looks like an X display, 
thus checked:

root      9960  1.0  4.7 126452 42624 tty7     Ss+  Oct23  14:59
/usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten
tcp vt7

But I don't understand why restarting syslogd would cause this to work
again.
