[Bug 38748] Re: eclipse JVM/gcj don't use same configuration

2008-10-28 Thread PomCompot
Moreover, using Eclipse 3.2.2 on Hardy (Build id: M20070212-1330 (Ubuntu
version: 3.2.2-5ubuntu2)), Eclipse use by default the GCJ JVM and
doesn't ask for workspace whatever the value of
SHOW_WORKSPACE_SELECTION_DIALOG in
~/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.2.0/configuration/.settings/org.eclipse.ui.ide.prefs.
It's an obvious bug due to the GCJ JVM because it doesn't appear with
the Sun JVM.

Globally, I think that the default order of the preferred JVM in the
file /etc/eclipse/java_home is not the better choice. I already have
problems with Eclipse 3.0 which was very slow with the gcj version. Now,
I got this problem with workspace location dialog which doesn't appear.
I personally think that the order hereunder must be the default one
(with gcj and kaffe at the end) :

#/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-icedtea
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun
/usr/lib/j2se/1.5
/usr/lib/j2se/1.4
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-ibm
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.4-ibm
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.6-sun

[Bug 28622] Re: Warning should be displayed when a filesystem is remounted read-only.

2009-01-15 Thread PomCompot
Could confirm the importance of such a dialog. Get a FAT32 external
media corrupted (accidentally unplugged while writing) and search for a
while what was the reason for the mount read only behavior. dmesg was
helpfull but it's not a acceptable solution for the common user.

I use Ubuntu Hardy. Strange thing, my wife's laptop under breezy has
mounted the same file system read-write with no problem. Cannot
reproduce now that an fsck has resolved the problem.

[Bug 274405] Re: network manager slow to reconnect after suspend/resume

2009-08-10 Thread PomCompot
Same problem but a startup.

Can confirm almost the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 1520 (iwl3945).
Have to wait from 30s to 3min before connection is done. Happen on my
WPA encrypted network with only this laptop. Non problem with others and
apparently no problem with this laptop on another WPA network (needs
investigations to confirm).

[Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly

2009-08-10 Thread PomCompot
@ktulu77 : From where di you get this 'Open with' dialog with two tabs
'Installed applications' and 'Available applications'? Is it in the
Karmik alpha? I personaly doesn't have such a dialog.

I'm new on this bug, but wondering technically what prevent an extension
from replacing the 'Open with' dialog. I mean, could be straight use the
default dialog of gnome or is there a need of specific XUL dev? Far
over, I know this is not such trivial as my comment could let think.

[Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly

2009-08-11 Thread PomCompot
@ktulu77 :
I have forgotten the MarkMail URL in my previous post:
http://markmail.org/message/mcarb3i4gg5hcvm3#query:+page:1+mid:qxaeqv22o3pkzgvx+state:results.

On Nautilus 2.26.2, on Jaunty, I don't have the two tabs. Strange.

You will not be happy, because you're right. First, the freedesktop
project doesn't provide (yet?) a dialog for 'Open with'. Second, the
'Open with' dialog is hardwired in Nautilus and could not easily be
extracted. The native 'Open with' dialog from a Firefox extension seems
then to be a harsh part.

About xdg-open, I don't understand the benefit of that compared to the
existing code. When you download a type of file from Firefox that you
have never open yet, it already automatically proposes, in the dropdown
list 'Open with', the associated system application. What the use of
this patch with xdg-open in this case because it seems the function is
already here?

[Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly

2009-08-11 Thread PomCompot
@Coren: Thanks Coren, it makes things clearer. Your patch is then needed
(solving a first problem, without solving the 'Open with' one, but it's
better than nothing).

@ktulu77: In the Gmome mailing list (MarkMail) I referenced, there are two
points of view :
- extraction from Nautilus and integration in GTK,
- keep in Nautilus with a DBus functionality to access it from other apps.

I'll try to summarize some points of the MarkMail conversation. It seems
that some applications have already developed their own native 'Open
with' clone dialog or something approaching (EOG, gThumb with context
menu listing). Evince, Epiphany seems also waiting for such a solution.
Thunar has already made something available to external apps through
DBus.

This conversation seems to have ended on May 2008 and not being alive
since. Would be interesting contacting authors to know if they have made
some developments on this.

The point is that we have 3 places talking of the same problem : this
Launchpad bug report specifically targeting Firefox (and Thunderbird),
the Firefox Bugzilla bug report and the Gnome mailing list. The problem
is clearly beyond Firefox, even though it is affected and must be
corrected. Every application could expect to have an easy access to an
'Open with' applications listing through a GUI (GTK component) or a
returned applications list.

In my opinion, it's something common to all desktop environments and
though could be a FreeDesktop specification.

The correction of this bug in the one hundred paper cuts seems
unreachable if it involves modification of the GTK lib or/and the
creation and the implementation of a FreeDesktop spec, but we could at
least found an agreement on the way to reach such a solution.

[Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly

2009-08-11 Thread PomCompot
This subject has, of course, already been talked on FreeDesktop. No
exactly from this point of view, but for setting up a consensus on the
best way to conceive the MIME database. It seems that Gnome and KDE have
both common and specific ways of handling that. I will not enter in the
details because I don't want to make technical mistakes.

Speaking for Gnome (taken from
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xdg/2008-January/009111.html),
each folder which contain .desktop files, also maintains two other files
: defaults.list which list default associations, and mimeinfo.cache
which list all applications link to a MIME type. You find examples in
/usr/share/applications/. You find also a defaults.list file in
/etc/gnome/. Those file are system level settings. Then, there is the
MIME database which is well described here:
http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-admin-guide/stable/mimetypes-
database.html.en.

xdg-mime could have a new parameter to retrieve all registered
applications for a MIME type. The x...@lists.freedesktop.org seems to be
the best place for talking about that.

There are 4 (or 5) complementary steps to provide a consistent experience to
the user:
- 1: call xdg-open or xdg-mime to get the default registered application,
- 2: call (a non existing) xdg-mime list to get all registered applications for
a MIME type for a short listing of available applications,
- 3: find another way to get all the application with .desktop files installed
on the computer for a complete listing of available applications,
(- 4 (optional): get relevant applications available from synaptic for this
task (would be great but difficult),)
- 5: in an advanced mode, propose a field to enter an application path (could
be a way for preferably access the paths stored in the $PATH variable.

Would be great to have here the knowledge of concerned people, I mean,
Gnome dev and FreeDesktop active subscribers on the subject. This is
highly too much technical to be embraced so simply.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: diff-ext

Overview:
When you just installed diff-ext and try to compare two (or three) files from

Steps to reproduce:
– Fresh install ofdiff-ext,

– Open context menu,
– Select compare.

Actual result:
Nothing happens

Expected result:
Open the installed compare editor (meld for instance).

[Bug 277211] Re: Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth card can't turned on in Ubuntu

2009-08-19 Thread PomCompot
Get a Dell Latitude D530 with an Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

Can confirm this. I have fought 1 entire day with this problem trying
also solution on Ubuntu forums and launchpad bugs to not having to boot
to Windows. I finally boot to Windows, activate the bluetooth and it
works in Ubuntu then.

I can confirm that sudo dellWirelessCtl --info give me the same
information than the BIOS, but this information seems false because the
bluetooth was really off. It seems that's a very specific problem of the
wireless card driver.

Note: This also have activated the bluetooth LED that was off before,
only indication of the real status of bluetooth it seems.

[Bug 211252] Re: Cannot receive files using bluetooth

2009-08-19 Thread PomCompot
I can confirm that installing and setting up properly gnome-user-share
make the deal. I have a Nokia 6630 and I can send files from it to my
laptop now.

There's the problem of the notification of gnome-user-share that stays
here after the transfer and which is completely useless because you
cannot interact with it.

I will make an update of the documentation page on the French Ubuntu
community documentation.

Would be great if gnome-user-share was properly installed and configured
along side all the OBEX things.

I comment here because I experience the same problem at startup. From 0s
to 1min to connect on my two Dell laptops. Annoying, because I also
experienced some connection failures with my ISP and I'm always asking
myself if it's the DSL box which is disconnected or Network Manager
which is slow.

I post here because I don't think this bug is really a duplicate of
#321098. It's surely related but doesn't concerned in my case a problem
of suspend/resume.

Could we post other details on this subject ?

[Bug 12893] Re: Shouldn't put .Trash-$USER on removable devices

2008-04-02 Thread PomCompot
The problem cannot be reduced to a wide system setting. Here we talk of
removable media, it meens you take it and plug it wherever you want on
multiple PCs. If you don't want a .Trash on your usb stick, you don't
want it whatever the Ubuntu where you plug it. It means that what is
needed here is a configuration file on the USB stick to prevent the
.Trash creation. You can also imagine other settings like preventing the
automounting of the volume. I get multiple Ubuntus and it's what I need.

[Bug 66015] Re: Duplicate spell checking dictionaries for every entry

2009-09-09 Thread PomCompot
A advice to everybody: the installation of Dictionary Switcher add-on
(https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3414) doesn't solve the
problem but leverage it a lot. It automatically detects your typing
language and select the right dictionary. No more need to change it in
the context menu

[Bug 66015] Re: Duplicate spell checking dictionaries for every entry

2009-09-09 Thread PomCompot
I don't think this bug is only a Firefox one. I'm French and often use
English on the web. Thus, I need both language-support-en and language-
support-fr. But, those meta-packages install a lot of dictionaries that
I don't care because I live in France, not in Belgium, not in Canada, so
fr-CA, fr-BE and fr-CH are of no use for me. It's not really a problem
to have too much dictionaries, the problem is that they are too many
supported locales set in /var/lib/locales/supported.d/en and
/var/lib/locales/supported.d/fr and that all those dictionaries are
activated.

What I propose :
# The Ubuntu part
– 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales' must give the ability to select
activate/deactivate locales,
– when installing Ubuntu, it must not only install language-support
metapackages but also reduce the activated languages to those of the country of
the user (fr_FR in my case for instance),
# The Firefox part
– Firefox must use 'locale -a' to get all activated locales and propose in the
spell check menu only the activated ones.

Try $gksu 'nautilus --no-desktop' with single quotes instead of $gksu nautilus

[Bug 1780] Re: apt-spy does not have ubuntu mirror listing

2013-11-03 Thread PomCompot
It seems now that Ubuntu provides a mirror list through
http://mirrors.ubuntu.com/mirrors.txt. Is it enough to push back apt-spy
in repository (with some modifications to retrieve the list of mirrors
from this URL)? The only problem seems to be that mirros.ubuntu.com is
regularly down.

It seems there's also a port for Ubuntu wrote in Ruby available here:
https://github.com/lagged/apt-spy2. Not packaged and doesn't know what
it worths.

[Bug 12893] Re: Shouldn't put .Trash-$USER on removable devices

2011-11-01 Thread PomCompot
What people seems to not understand it's that it's counter-intuitive to
pretend that a user must be aware of the destination of it's removed
files and moreover that it doesn't free its key space as expected.

When you delete files, there are two reasons: the file is useless + you
don't have enough storage. This is particulary true on removable storage
which have fewer space than HDD.

So, no, getting a trash on the key is not a solution, and asking for
user to empty their unknown trash neither.

We need to start from the real need of a trash. It is for give the user
the ability to undo its deletion. Do this undo must really last when the
key is removed? Perhaps it depends on the size of the removable storage:
a removable HDD is more expected to have a trash than a small flash key.

The only problem in fact from the start of this bugreport is that we
don't even have the choice to have or not to have a trash folder on our
media. This choice has been made a day and keep plagging everyday use of
number of users without any settings to prevent this behavior (system
wide or media specific setting).

[Bug 523484] Re: ureadahead requires /var on root filesystem

2010-10-25 Thread PomCompot
Any proof of a link with ureadahead? Would be interesting for others to
give some details on this (first, to know if we can make a migration
with /var on another part).

[Bug 494400] Re: Opening folder with nautilus-gksu change desktop wallpaper to root one

2010-10-12 Thread PomCompot
It's normal. When you launch Nautilus as root without the option --no-
desktop, this new nautilus instance begins to manage the desktop. You
just have to launch gksudo nautilus --no-desktop.
