[Bug 253579] [NEW] terminal does not handle tab character in last column correctly

2008-07-31 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

If a line has a tab character in the last column, gnome-terminal does
not display the tab.

To reproduce:
> python -c 'print "x"*79 + "\tABC"'

(Assuming that your terminal width is 80 characters.)

Expected behavior:
The terminal should display 79 "x"s and one tab character in the first line,
and the letters "ABC" in the continuation line.

Actual behavior:
The terminal displays 79 "x"s and the letter "A" in the first line, and the
letters "BC" in the continuation line. The tab character is lost.

I am using hardy (updated from a fresh install of gutsy) with
2.22.1-0ubuntu2.

*This may not be a bug in gnome-terminal* - xterm shows the same
behavior.

[Bug 322331] [NEW] Hard disk clicks and increasing Load_Retry_Count

2009-01-28 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

My hard disk (a Samsung HM160HC) emits a loud (and fairly scary) click
every couple of minutes or so. Sometimes this is accompanied by a louder
(and scarier) beeping noise. Every time it emits a click, the
Load_Retry_Count is increased by one. (The Load_Cycle_Count, on the
other hand, is hardly increased at all, remaining constant for tens of
minutes, at least.)

This did not happen under any previous version of Ubuntu. I am currently
running intrepid (updated from feisty via gutsy and hardy, I believe).

I am not sure if I am filing this against the correct package, but it
seems similar enough to #59695 to suspect that these bugs might be
related.

[Bug 134378] Re: Feature Request: Provide a single configuration file for user settings

2008-07-11 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Thank you for taking the time to answer this issue. Examining the answer
you have given me, this does not appear to resolve the issue, though...

I assume you refer to the following in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables:

"In order to set environment variables in a way that effects a user's
entire desktop session, one may place commands to set their values in
one of the "hidden" script files in the user's home directory. The more
common such files are outlined below.

~/.profile - This is probably the best file for placing
environment variable assignments in, since it gets executed
automatically by the DisplayManager during the startup process desktop
session as well as by the login shell when one logs-in from the textual
console. "

This would indeed resolve this issue, if only it were true. gdm does
not, in fact, execute ~/.profile.

Since this differs from expected and documented behaviour, I am
reopening this bug and assigning it to gdm.

Thanks.

[Bug 255709] [NEW] mac-fdisk is only supported on mac platforms

2008-08-07 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mac-fdisk

This may be more of a feature request.

mac-fdisk should be available for other architectures. If you need to
prepare a USB memory stick for installing Linux on a Mac, the stick
needs to be formatted as a Mac boot disk. For this you need mac-fdisk.
Which is only available for Mac. So unless you already have Linux
installed on your Mac, you're stuck. Luckily, downloading the package
source and building the package works reasonably well: While the
packaging process fails, a working mac-fdisk executable is built.

Making the binary package available for other platforms would save users
that trouble.

[Bug 231022] [NEW] AltGr-ScrollLock does not work

2008-05-16 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Pressing AltGr-ScrollLock should show the current register contents on
the console. (See "fn_show_ptregs()" in file "drivers/char/keyboard.c"
and http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO-8.html#ss8.2 ) It
doesn't. Pressing these keys does nothing at all.

Shift-ScrollLock (show memory) and Ctrl-ScrollLock (show state) work
fine, so this seems to be one of these problems with the AltGr key.

I am using hardy on a Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V laptop (ScrollLock is

[Bug 134378] Re: Feature Request: Provide a single configuration file for user settings

2008-07-14 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Ah, I see where I went wrong.

Environment variables set in ~/.profile need to be exported in order to
be present in x-session-manager and all its descendants. (Whereas they
will be present in login shells even when they are not exported.) The
line 'PATH=~/bin:"${PATH}"' (no export) and the fact that everything
worked as expected when logging in on the virtual console made me think
that those variables did not need to be exported.

After adding the appropriate "export" commands everything works fine.

Sorry for bothering you and thanks for your efforts!

[Bug 151514] Re: rhythmbox uses 100% CPU time when using crossfading

2008-05-25 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
I might be having the same problem. While playback of mp3 and ogg files
works fine, enabling the crossfader (and restarting rhythmbox) increases
rhythmbox's CPU usage from single digits to about 20 or 30%. This is
more pronounced for certain audio files than for others--though I
haven't been able to discern a pattern yet. Also, starting other
applications or opening other windows sometimes causes audio playback to
stutter.

[Bug 317567] [NEW] pppd sends packets exceeding MTU

2009-01-15 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ppp

When I log on to a certain VPN of type "Microsoft VPN (PPTP)", the
connection is always dropped after some time. It turns out that this
happens when my computer sends a GRE-encapsulated PPP packet with a
payload length of 1417. The MTU of the network interface ppp0 is 1412. I
believe the VPN gateway accepts packets with a payload length up to
1416. (How can I verify that?)

I am not sure whether pptp or pppd is the culprit here, but I suspect
pppd. This looks like an off-by-one error.

Does anyone know why this might happen? Any pointers where I might look?
Is there any information I can provide you with?

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 "hardy heron" with ppp 2.4.4rel-9ubuntu2.

[Bug 317567] Re: pppd sends packets exceeding MTU

2009-01-15 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
After manually setting the interface MTU to 1411, I found out that the
gateway does not accept packets with a payload length of 1416 either.

Also, when pppd receives an ICMP message with message code 4
("Fragmentation needed"), why doesn't it react by fragmenting and re-
sending the offending packet?

Trial and error: The magic number for the payload length is 1400.
Anything exceeding that terminates the connection. (Thus, the interface
MTU needs to be set to 1395.)

One more question: Why does pppd set the interface MTU to 1412 in the
first place, when it is called with "mtu 1200 mru 1500" in its command
line?

Same problem here. Only occurs after suspend-to-RAM, I think. Kernel

the ipw2200 module ("rmmod ipw2200; modprobe ipw2200").

[Bug 114505] Re: ntp is being brought up before network is ready, causing ntp to not resolve any ip or host names and it appears ntp does not recover

2007-10-07 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Does it work if you comment out the line "exit 0" in /etc/network/if-
up.d/ntp?

To the maintainer(s): Why is this line in there by default? Would it
hurt to restart ntp whenever a network interface comes up, and let users
disable this if they want, instead of doing it the other way around?

[Bug 114505] Re: ntp is being brought up before network is ready, causing ntp to not resolve any ip or host names and it appears ntp does not recover

2007-10-08 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
I may be having a different problem than other posters on this bug
report. My internet connection is a WPA-secured wireless connection. The
interface is brought up at boot time, and NTP is started. However, the
wireless card does not connect to the router before I log in and enter
my keyring password (which unlocks the WPA password). At that time, ntpd
has already figured out that it cannot connect to any of the time
servers:

Oct 7 14:17:43 localhost ntpd_initres[5377]: couldn't resolve
`ntp.ubuntu.com', giving up on it

Now, when the wireless interface connects to the router and gets
configured via DHCP, NTP does not do anything anymore.

I guess that most people using laptops with WPA-secured wireless
networks suffer from the same problem. I believe the default
configuration should work with this kind of setup (as it appears to be
increasingly common).

[Bug 104957] Re: users with no password can't log in with gdm

2007-10-10 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Isn't this a PAM bug?

I get the same result as Kristian Erik Hermansen above, namely that
login is rejected by pam_securetty. However, I do not quite see why
pam_securetty should be run.

> grep -r pam_securetty /etc/pam.d
/etc/pam.d/login:auth requisite pam_securetty.so

So, if I am not mistaken, pam_securetty should only be run for the "login"
service, not for gdm.
Also, /usr/share/doc/libpam-doc/html/pam-6.html#ss6.23 states for the
pam_securetty module: "Provides standard Unix securetty checking, which causes
authentication for root to fail unless PAM_TTY is set to a string listed in the
/etc/securetty file. For all other users, it succeeds."

So pam_securetty should not be run at all, and it should certainly not
fail.

[Bug 104957] Re: users with no password can't log in with gdm

2007-10-10 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
This is untested, but the problem might be this:

pam-0.79/Linux-PAM/modules/pam_unix/support.c: _unix_blankpasswd
contains the following:

if ((retval == 1) && on(UNIX_NULLOK_SECURE, ctrl)) {
int retval2;
const char *uttyname;
retval2 = pam_get_item(pamh, PAM_TTY, (const void **)&uttyname);
if (retval2 != PAM_SUCCESS || uttyname == NULL)
return 0;

if (_pammodutil_tty_secure(uttyname) != PAM_SUCCESS)
return 0;
}

It appears that the tty is always checked if the password is blank.
Can anybody confirm that this is, in fact, the problem? Why is this check
performed?

When the log out dialog is displayed (by choosing "System -> Quit", by
clicking the log out panel button in the top right corner, or by
pressing the power button) the screen briefly fades out, returns to full

[Bug 154369] Application switcher (alt-tab) shows wrong behaviour on 'escape'

2007-10-19 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

The compiz application switcher does not behave correctly when I press
the 'escape' key.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Press Alt-Tab to activate the application switcher. Hold down the Alt key.
2. Press Escape.

Expected result:
The application switcher should disappear, the window that was focused before
Alt-Tab was pressed should retain focus. (This is what metacity does.)

Actual result:
The application switcher disappears (as expected), but the window that was
selected at the time Escape was pressed gets the focus.

[Bug 226827] [NEW] Two single clicks accepted as double-click

2008-05-05 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Several apps accept two single clicks as a double-click.
(I take a double-click to mean two clicks on the same object within a
certain--short--time.)

Examples:
1. Nautilus: Open a window in list view, click on a file (or folder) and
quickly click on the file above it. (You need to be rather quick to do this
within the double-click interval. You can increase this interval in "System ->
Preferences -> Mouse".) This opens the second file.

2. Compiz Expo applet: Hit Super-E to activate the Expo applet. Click on
a workspace and quickly click on an adjacent workspace. (You don't have
to be quite as quick for this one, as the default double-click interval
for the Expo applet is longer.) This activates the second workspace and
quits the applet.

In both cases, the first click is accepted as a single click (the file
or workspace is selected), the second click is accepted as a double-
click on the second object (the file is opened, the workspace becomes
active). This is not the expected result, as a double-click should only
be registered when two clicks occur on the *same* object within the
double-click interval.

This might be a GNOME bug. If anyone could test this on KDE, that would
be great!

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS "hardy heron" (updated from 7.10 "gutsy
gibbon").

[Bug 226863] Re: Thunderbird uploads mail from POP-server twice once in a while

2008-05-05 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Does this happen during a single download or with multiple downloads,
i.e. does Thunderbird just download two copies of a message or does it
download a second copy of a previously downloaded message at a later
time?

If you are complaining about the latter issue, I can confirm that
behavior. I am not sure, though, if this is a Thunderbird bug. For me,
this only happened when the mail server changed the unique-ids (UID) of
the messages. Thunderbird uses these unique-ids to determine which
messages it has already downloaded. They are supposed to be persistent
across sessions (cf. RFC 1939). Thus, downloading these messages again
after the server illegally changed their UIDs might not qualify as a
Thunderbird bug.

To check whether you are experiencing the same issue, view the message
source for two such identical messages and see whether the line
beginning "X-UIDL" contains the same value for both of them.

One additional small observation: Under gutsy, switching worked by

pressing the left Alt key. Under hardy, this is reversed, i.e. I need to
press and hold the left Alt key, then press the right Alt key. I don't

[Bug 228168] [NEW] System freeze under heavy load

2008-05-08 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

My system sometimes freezes under heavy load.

Symptoms are:
- The cursor can still be moved.
- The system is completely unresponsive otherwise.
- The screen is not updated (except for cursor movement).
- Pressing Control-Alt-Backspace does not work.
- Pressing Control-Alt-F1 does not work.
- Pressing Control-Alt-Delete does not work.
- Magic-SysRq still works.
- Alt-SysRq-E causes the screen to be messed up.

Possible causes that come to mind:
- High CPU load.
- High memory load.
- Overheating.
- Hardware problems (unlikely, worked flawlessly under gutsy).

Attachments to follow. Please let me know what further information I can
provide to help fix this bug.

This may be a duplicate of bug #204996.

[Bug 229182] [NEW] Add a "-n" option to cp (opposite of "-f")

2008-05-11 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: coreutils

Here's a wishlist item:

The BSD version of cp(1) has a "-n" command line option (cf.
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=cp&sektion=1). It means: "Do
not overwrite an existing file."

This is a pretty nice thing to have if you want to copy a bunch of files
from A to B without replacing any of the files in B (regardless of their
modification time). With this version of cp(1), you have to do something
like "yes no | cp -i A/* B/*", which is unnecessarily complicated. cp(1)
has the "-f" switch and the "-i" switch, it should have the
corresponding "-n" switch.

Thanks for considering!

[Bug 130429] Re: [feisty] brief glitch at the bottom of the screen after gdm starts with i915 graphics card

2007-09-12 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
I am still seeing this bug under gutsy tribe 5.

Also, I have recently noticed that what is shown on the screen is not
exactly *random* garbage. There is usually a resemblance between the
colors in this strip at the bottom of the screen and what I had
previously viewed on my screen. Recently, a part of a Thunderbird window
that I had had on the screen showed up as the rightmost part of this
strip after I logged out. (Thus, the "random" garbage seems to come from
some sort of buffer, I guess.) This is somewhat troubling as someone
(possibly with a lot of luck) might be able to see parts of what I had
on my screen without my permission.

[Bug 133313] Re: /bin/umount does not work for automounted USB flash drives

2007-08-18 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
@Basilio Kublik:
Yes, I am sure the flash drive is mounted as /media/USB\ DISK. (This particular
flash drive, YMMV.)
No, I do not have enough rights to umount the disk, as the error message states.
Using sudo does work.

@Pedro Villavicencio:
I am not looking for support. Obviously, there are ways to unmount the flash
drive, so my problem is not that I am unable to unmount it.

The problem is that I can unmount the disk from the context menu without
entering my password (i.e. without using gksudo or such) but I cannot unmount
it from the command line without using sudo. I would like to see this made more
consistent.
I agree that this is not necessarily a bug. Can we agree on making this a
wishlist item?

Thanks for your feedback!

[Bug 60429] Re: Upstart lacks documentation

2007-08-22 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Upstart is still a pretty big deal and the README (I am assuming that is
/usr/share/doc/upstart/README.Debian.gz) and man pages are insufficient

[Bug 133313] Re: /bin/umount does not work for automounted USB flash drives

2007-08-22 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
I solved this by installing the pmount package. umount still does not
work, but pumount does. (pumount tells hald to unmount the drive. hald
runs as root and performs the permission check itself.)

I was positively surprised that eject uses pumount by default if it is
available.

I would still prefer it if the standard umount command worked as well,
though... (Why doesn't ubuntu use the fstab-sync mechanism with HAL?)

Correction: pumount does not seem to unmount the device by calling on

pumount is installed suid root. (Which is not a perfect solution, due to
the potential security problems any binary suid root introduces...)

[Bug 139956] error when logrotate runs while tor is not running

2007-09-16 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tor

Whenever logrotate runs while tor is not running, logrotate delivers the
following error message to my mailbox:

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
There is no /var/run/tor directory.
error: error running shared postrotate script for /var/log/tor/*log
run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1

This is because /etc/logrotate.d/tor includes the following:

postrotate
/etc/init.d/tor reload > /dev/null
endscript

And /etc/init.d/tor executes the following when called with "reload" as
argument:

if test ! -d $TORPIDDIR; then echo "There is no $TORPIDDIR directory."
>&2; exit 1

($TORPIDDIR is /var/run/tor.)

This behaviour is a bit annoying, as I use tor only occasionally and don't
often have it running, which means that I get an error message almost every
day. I am not sure whether this should be fixed in /etc/logrotate.d/tor or in
/etc/init.d/tor. What is the correct behaviour for an init script if it is
called with the "reload" argument when the daemon is not running? Should it
output an error message or fail silently?
In the former case, /etc/logrotate.d/tor might be fixed by changing the above
lines to:

postrotate
/etc/init.d/tor reload > /dev/null 2> /dev/null
endscript

This will redirect standard error to /dev/null as well, so that the
error message no longer reaches logrotate.

I am using feisty with tor 0.1.1.26-1.

[Bug 134378] Feature Request: Provide a single configuration file for user settings

2007-08-23 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

I want to set a number of environment variables on login (LC_* and PATH,
for example). I want these settings to take effect regardless of whether
I log in through gdm or the virtual console.

I do not think that there is a single configuration file in my home directory
that gets sourced on both types of login.
(I know that I could work around this by including something like "source
my_configuration_file" in both .gnomerc and .bash_profile.) I would be nice to
have a single file to store such settings. Ideally, it would be sourced
irrespective of the shell I use.

Obviously, this is not an issue with ubuntu specifically--as far as I
know, all Linux distributions have this problem.

fine.)

I am using feisty on a Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V laptop.

[Bug 65730] Re: White-list Suspend as working on Lenovo ThinkPad T60p

2007-08-30 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
I suddenly have the same issue on my Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V laptop.
I am almost certain that it worked until a couple of days ago. I haven't
changed the configuration. Has any update changed the
/apps/gnome-power-manager/action_button_suspend recently? Does any process
change that setting?

Re: [Bug 135792] Re: rhythmbox does not use the http_proxy, freezes

2007-08-30 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
I can confirm that setting the proxy settings with
gnome-network-preferences works.

There is still the issue with the freeze, though. If rhythmbox cannot
connect to an Internet radio station, it should fail gracefully.

Should I file this as another bug or will you re-open this one?

Thanks for your quick reply!

[Bug 137473] mutt fails to log in to IMAP server using TLS

2007-09-05 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mutt

If I try to log in to a certain IMAP server using TLS (mutt -f
imaps://server), the connection is dropped after I enter my username and
password. mutt reports that the "SASL authentication failed". Logging in
to the same IMAP server without TLS (mutt -f imap://server) works fine.
Logging in manually with openssl works as well.

This is mutt 1.5.13-1.1ubuntu3 on feisty.

I am not sure how to debug this. Is there a way to observe the network
traffic in an unencrypted form when I use TLS? Some way to tell mutt to
output debug information?

** Affects: mutt (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 137473] Re: mutt fails to log in to IMAP server using TLS

2007-09-05 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
This bug does not seem to be a duplicate of #65821. That bug report's
discussion answered my question about debug output, though (which, by
the way, should be answered by the man page, in my opinion).

The crucial difference between logging in with TLS and logging in
without TLS seems to be that the server advertises the PLAIN login
mechanism if and only if I log in using TLS. (Otherwise, the LOGIN
mechanism is used, which works fine.)

The problem with the PLAIN mechanism seems to be that mutt sends an initial
client response, i.e.
"> a AUTHENTICATE PLAIN "

This is not a valid IMAP command. RFC 3501 states in section 6.2.2: "The
AUTHENTICATE command does not support the optional "initial response"
feature of [SASL]."

I will try to find out whether this is a bug in mutt itself or a
library. If I feel I understand the code, I will try to write a patch.

[Bug 137473] Re: mutt fails to log in to IMAP server using TLS

2007-09-05 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
Hmm. It seems that this not a bug (or flea), after all.

The server advertises the "SASL-IR" capability, which means that it
should be ready to accept an initital response as optional argument to
the AUTHENTICATE command, according to http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-
siemborski-imap-sasl-initial-response-06

Therefore, it seems that mutt is completely right to send the
authentication message as it does.

Okay, this is getting curiouser and curiouser... The server does indeed
accept the initial response argument, but not from mutt. If I copy the
authentication string sent by mutt from the debug log, and paste it into
an openssl session, it works. In mutt, it doesn't. Now I am somewhat at
my wit's end. What could possibly cause the server to accept that string
from openssl, but not from mutt? Timing issues? Line terminator? Mere
prejudice? Is there some sort of heisenbug in mutt after all?

Any help is appreciated.
