[Bug 299146] [NEW] flashplugin-nonfree on amd64 should use pure 64 bit plugin

2008-11-17 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

Adobe has released a 64 bit version of their flash plugin. It is currently
under development, but it should be considered for Jaunty. The current
nspluginwrapper method pulls in ia32-libs, a huge package, and nspluginwrapper
itself can contain bugs. Performance would be greater, and package maintenance
would also be easier.

[Bug 204770] Re: [hardy] gdmsetup cause intensive disk activity and take a very long time to open

2008-12-03 Thread Pelládi Gábor
I tested tracker 0.6.6-1ubuntu5.1 from proposed and I can confirm that
it fixes this bug. It is no longer activated by gdmsetup. Directories
like /root/.cache/tracker, /root/.local/share/tracker and
/root/.config/tracker are no longer created when launching gdmsetup,
unlike version 0.6.6-1ubuntu5. Gdmsetup seems to work fine, and tracker
was able to find files in my home directory.

[Bug 301811] [NEW] Preferences/Power Management dialog wider than 1024 pixels with hungarian locale

2008-11-24 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Public bug reported:

See the attached screenshot for the problem.
Using current Intrepid. In Hungarian the labels before the sliders are longer
than in English. This breaks the whole layout of the dialog. The text should be
broken into multiple lines, but most importantly, the sliders should not expand
to the same width as the text. It is likely that some other (more verbose)
languages are affected, too.
The layout of the dialog should be changed, to tolerate internationalized text.

[Bug 25619] Re: eog doesn't ask whether to save changes

2008-11-25 Thread Pelládi Gábor
The current behavior is the same as 3 years ago. Silently discarding the

saving the image at once after a lossless(!) rotation. The approach to
ask the user on closing eog if he wants to save all rotations can be a
compromise.

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2008-11-25 Thread Pelládi Gábor
It is clear that the concept of a desktop grid is an idea that many users want
and are familiar with. Every major desktop environment defaults to that. And it
shouldn't be hard to implement, as nautilus file manager already organizes
items in a grid.
There is no use case when a user wants to have his icons overlap.

[Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC

2008-11-26 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Giacomo, I suppose your eee pc doesn't contain an Atheros wifi card,
like mine. It can contain an other wifi card. You can verify that with
the "lspci" command. If that doesn't give you something named Atheros,
you don't have an Atheros card. My eee contains a RaLink card, which
needs the rt2860sta driver. That driver is not included in Ubuntu yet,
even in backports, but it is included in Ubuntu-eee. See

[Bug 363695] Re: update-apt-xapian-index uses too much CPU

2009-05-28 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Just happened to me on an Asus EEE 901. I was copying large files from a
pendrive, and after few minutes my desktop was almost frozen, unusable.
The system responded for a mouse action in 30-60 seconds. The hard drive
led (SSD in fact) was continuously on. I managed to switch to vt1 and
log in (it took a minute), and ran top. It showed that update-apt-xapi
was using 100% CPU. After about 8-10 minutes of struggling, the process
finished it's mysterious work, and the system was back to normal again.
But rendering the box unusable for minutes can be frustrating. At least
can somebody tell me why we need this background process at all? Can I
uninstall it, without breaking functionality?

[Bug 379928] [NEW] kpackagekit cannot display changelogs

2009-05-24 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

I am using Kubuntu Jaunty with all updates. When there are new security or
bug-fix updates available, I click the notify icon on the status bar, and
kpackagekit shows up. Clicking on a specific package the following informations
are displayed: type, new and old version, repository and changes. This last
"changes" entry is always "The list of changes is not available". I can,
however access the changelog by searching manually on the launchpad website.
Maybe the URL that kpackagekit tries to open is wrong?

[Bug 374248] [NEW] Cannot change language in khangman if kdelibs-data is not installed

2009-05-09 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Public bug reported:

This must be a packaging problem in Ubuntu Jaunty (GNOME), using
khangman 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu1.

Without kdelibs-data 4:3.5.10.dfsg.1-1ubuntu8 installed: If I open the
Languages menu, there is one entry called "None". After downloading a
data file for a new language, e.g. Hungarian, there are two entries in
the Languages menu, but both called "None". Selecting any of those two
"None" labeled menu items, khangman thinks that I have selected the
first one (probably because they are called the same), and switches to
English. I cannot activate Hungarian in any way.

With kdelibs-data 4:3.5.10.dfsg.1-1ubuntu8 installed: If I open the
Languages menu, there is one entry called "English". After downloading a
data file for a new language, e.g. Hungarian, there are two entries in
the Languages menu, one called "English" and one called "Hungarian".
Selecting one works properly.

This behavior is strange, because as far as I know, kdelibs-data is a
KDE 3 package. But as it seems, some part of it is used by a KDE4
application.

[Bug 357204] Re: mouse sensitivity has no effect in Jaunty

2009-05-10 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Now I have learned something. Sorry if I say trivial things for you, but I
think it is not clear for everybody.
Mouse sensitivity has very little to do with the movement speed of the mouse or
touchpad. That is controlled by acceleration. High acceleration means faster
cursor movement.
To be able to move fast, and at the same time be precise, there are two levels
of speed. The slower speed is active if you move the mouse or touchpad less
than the value in pixels specified by sensitivity. This speed is always 1, it
cannot be adjusted.
If you move more pixels than sensitivity, then the mouse will move faster, as
fast as your acceleration setting is.
But high acceleration makes the cursor "jumpy". So you either have a slow
cursor, or a jumpy cursor.

So far the effects of the options in gnome-control-center. I can see the
following issues:
1. The label of the "sensitivity" slider is misleading. I thought it should
affect the speed of the cursor. "Threshold" would be better IMHO, as this
option is called in man xset. After I have read the comments here, this is the
main problem, so this bug should focus on the misleading option name in
gnome-control-center.
2. There is a feature in newer xservers, that enables continuous pointer
acceleration. You can try it with the command "xset m 2 0". This is much better
than the two-level acceleration, but gnome-control-center does not provide a
way to turn it on. It would be a nice feature.
3. The initial values after a fresh install are either too slow or too high for
certain input devices, e.g. the touchpad of the Asus EEE 901. Better defaults
are welcome, but it is less problem if it can be changed in
gnome-control-center intuitively.

2009-05-07 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Kubuntu Jaunty
klipper 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu2
openoffice.org-writer 1:3.0.1-9ubuntu3

I have the same bug as Brice described. It is easy to reproduce:
1. Open OpenOffice Writer and another random application
2. Type some text, select it
3. Press ctrl+c several times
4. Try to switch to the other application on the taskbar
5. If you could switch, go back to OO and repeat from step 3.
In a few tries the bug occurs. The desktop freezes completely for about five
seconds.

Running Klipper from Konsole the following output is produced for every
occurrence (yes, for every single occurrence exactly ten lines are produced):

[Bug 291230] [NEW] http://start.ubuntu.com/8.10/ national characters appear incorrectly

2008-10-30 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Public bug reported:

The content at http://start.ubuntu.com/8.10/ is displayed incorrectly in my
locale (Hungarian). The national characters are wrong. It must have a character
encoding problem somewhere. It looks like an UTF-8 encoded file was opened with
ISO-8859-1 encoding, because every national character got transformed into two
"symbols".
This is displyed: Ubuntu súgó – Közreműködés – Ubuntu áruház. The
browser shows this with UTF-8 encoding. If I switch to Central European
encoding, i can see four "symbols" for each national character.
This may not be strictly a problem of Ubuntu itself, but I'm reporting this
here, because it appears on the start page of Ubuntu's default browser.

2008-07-24 Thread Pelládi Gábor
F-spot import shows two instances of my camera, and selecting any of

meaningless and confusing to display that dialog. See the second

There is no way in f-spot to delete the imported pictures from the

2009-01-26 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Using current Intrepid, the gnome-sound-properties is a mess. My main
problem is the same as this bug is about. If I disable the login sound,
that setting is ignored. And there are some more strange things: The
names of the sound events are missing, all of them are "Hangesemény" =
"Sound Event" (in Hungarian). If I disable all sounds with the topmost
option, nothing plays, as expected. But if I re-enable that option, the

[Bug 317781] Re: Ext4 data loss

2009-03-15 Thread Pelládi Gábor
KDE has a framework for reading and writing application settings. So the
solution should be simple: switch on the fsync call at the same Ubuntu release
where ext4 is the default file system. Does anybody know what is the situation
of the GNOME environment? Does a similar switch exist?
Of course other core apps must be fixed, too. Firefox and OpenOffice are using
fsync, as far as I know, so no problem. Fixing dpkg will be a must, it rewrites
files in huge amounts and is essential to work correctly.
I think moving to ext4 for Karmic would be a good idea. Ubuntu 10.04 will be an
LTS, so a bad target to switch to a new file system. If Karmic would be ext4 by
default, it would contain at least the .30 kernel, which has patches to improve
the situation, and the core applications could be patched.

2008-09-01 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Kubuntu Intrepid daily live cd mounted my hard drive partitions
correctly. It seems that KDE4 does not suffer from this bug. I am
marking this as Fix Released, because it is fixed in Intrepid.

** Changed in: dolphin (Ubuntu)

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2009-06-11 Thread Pelládi Gábor
There is already a preference in GNOME that that toggles between icons can be
placed everywhere, and icons are snapped to a grid. The size of the grid is
hardcoded in the source to a small value as a #define, and the grid width is
greater than the height.
What the supporters of this bug propose is the same solution as every other big
desktop environment has on various operating systems, including Linux. Change
the behavior of the "align to a grid" mode of the desktop, to be like viewing
the Desktop folder in Nautilus. The grid size should be large enough to hold an
icon, it should be a square, not a rectangle, and at most one icon should be
allowed in one cell. The size of the icons must be maximized to the grid size.
The "icons can be placed anywhere" mode of GNOME should stay untouched.
Come on, you have to know the proposed solution, look at KDE, XFCE, Windows 3.1
to 7, OS X, all have this option.

Why not? Why can't we have a static grid in "keep aligned" mode? I say
that we should have a static grid in "keep aligned" mode.

Then disable variable icon geometry in "keep aligned" mode, for the

2009-06-11 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Technically, in nautilus-icon-container.c, I would like to change
#define SNAP_SIZE_X 78
#define SNAP_SIZE_Y 20
to
#define SNAP_SIZE_X 128
#define SNAP_SIZE_Y 128
and don't allow icons to be greater than the cell size 128 px.

[Bug 473789] Re: Network card sometimes not detected at boot

2010-05-29 Thread Pelládi Gábor
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Sometimes, when I boot Kubuntu Karmic (upgraded from Jaunty), my network card
is not detected. It is completely missing from the lspci listing, and no eth0
interface is created. There is no sign in dmesg of the network card, when this
bug happens. The network card uses the r8169 kernel driver.
The bug seems to occur after the computer has been turned off for a longer
time. After rebooting, the kernel finds the network card correctly.
I am using apport-bug when my network card was detected, to be able to file
this bug in launchpad. I will attach dmesg when the netword card was missing.

2009-09-10 daily live cd, which has openoffice 3.1.1.

[Bug 461355] [NEW] Double "Automatic file name extension" checkbox in OOo KDE file dialog

2009-10-26 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-kde

In Kubuntu, the "save", "save as" and "export" dialogs of OpenOffice
have an "Automatic file name extension" AS WELL as an "Automatically
select filename extension (.html)". Only one should be needed!

** Affects: openoffice.org (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 461369] [NEW] Misleading label "Filter" in OOo KDE file dialog

2009-10-26 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-kde

In Kubuntu, the "save", "save as" and "export" dialogs of OpenOffice,
the select box which determines the type of the saved file has a label
"Filter". How are you supposed to know that you have to select the type
of file you want to save in the "Filter" select box? Perhaps change the
label to "File format" or something else.
