[Bug 213081] Re: CUPS does not print to LPD printer

2008-08-28 Thread Patrick Schueller
I have tested it here by installing kernel 2.6.27-1-generic on Hardy
(downloaded from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/pub/next/2.6.27-rc3/hardy/),
then removed the workaround patch (net.ipv4.tcp_frto = 0) from
sysctl.conf and rebooted with the new kernel. It seems that the bug is
gone with this kernel since IP printing now works normally without the
patch.

Thanks for fixing it :-)

[Bug 267241] Re: [intrepid] X11: no device detected

2008-11-10 Thread Patrick Schueller
Another strange thing: I did one last test now: I installed gOS, which
appears to be a Google variant of Ubuntu. This one obviously corresponds
to Hardy.

This Hardy variant booted to 1024x768, which is higher than I could get
with the original Hardy and much better than the no video with Intrepid.
It then offered to install the fglrx driver, and guess what? Now the
laptop runs at its native resolution of 1280x800 for the first time :-)

But this is no solution to the bug in Intrepid of course. I will refrain
from upgrading for the time being ;-)

[Bug 286489] Re: Intrepid Ibex 2.6.27-7: r8169 driver does not work with Realtek RTL8111B gigabit ethernet chip in Ubuntu 8.10 BETA

2008-11-19 Thread Patrick Schueller
I have made a strange observation, maybe it helps anyone to find out
what the problem is.

I now work on Hardy, since I can't use Intrepid without network. Because
otherwise my machine hangs during boot, I use the kernel parameter
"acpi=off" (or "acpi=ht"). With these parameters, the network card works
fine under Hardy (kernel 2.6.24-21-generic).

BUT... if I remove "acpi=off" and add "nosmp", the same symptoms occur
with Hardy (no network, no DHCP, also no network with manual IP config)
as reported here for Intrepid. This is reproducible.

I will now make a final test and see if the Intrepid live CD has network
if booted with "acpi=off".

2008-11-19 Thread Patrick Schueller
So, back from rebooting...

Intrepid live CD with "acpi=off" --> network OK
Intrepid live CD without "acpi=off" (but with "noapic nolapic", otherwise it
hangs) --> no network

So: probably a problem with ACPI. The card seems to have a sleep mode,
see the Realtek page:

2008-11-25 Thread Patrick Schueller
I have a solution :-)

Following a tip from news://de.comp.os.unix.linux.misc, I tried various
kernel parameters, and *for me* it seems to be an ACPI bug. With the
parameter "pci=nomsi", my Realtek RTL8111/8168B network adapter now
works under both Hardy and Intrepid.

Please tell if this helps you also or if there are different bugs
leading to a nonfunctioning Realtek network adapter.

[Bug 286489] Re: Intrepid Ibex 2.6.27-7: r8169 driver does not work with Realtek RTL8111B gigabit ethernet chip in Ubuntu 8.10 BETA

2009-05-15 Thread Patrick Schueller
No problems here any more with kernel 2.6.29 (using sidux or Debian
testing with 2.6.29 kernel from sid). No kernel parameters needed any
more for booting correctly, everything works, even 2 cores (which didn't
work before). Several problems with the ASUS motherboard have vanished
with this kernel. So the problems seem to have been corrected upstream.
As far as I am concerned, the bug may be closed. Any comments?

[Bug 267254] Re: acpi error on startup

2009-06-02 Thread Patrick Schueller
I see this is a relatively old message, but I think I have a solution,
so possibly it will help someone...

I had the same problem with my ASUS X 56 T notebook (M51TR motherboard,
AMD Turion ZM82 dual core processor). The problem seems to have been
solved upstream, all Debian sid or sidux 2.6.29 kernels work, any other
kernels from any distro don't and produce the same symptoms as you
described.

As a workaround, don't use acpi=off. Use instead maxcpus=1. This should
enable ACPI with the older kernels without crashing, if it is really the
same problem, as I suspect because our machines share a motherboards
from the same series. (M51T/TR). However, you can only use one CPU core
(also with acpi=off, so nothing lost).

To use both cores and ACPI without crashing, you have to use a 2.6.29 kernel,
so either
- compile one yourself
- or install one from the Debian sid or sidux repository (don't install
anything else from there, mixing Ubuntu and Debian won't work)
- or wait for Ubuntu to bring it to you via dist-upgrade (takes probably until
2009-10)

2008-10-14 Thread Patrick Schueller
I can confirm the observations made by the_one(2) and Emanuele Pane. On my
machine, RealTek RTL8111/6168B network adapter:
- works on Hardy (Kubuntu) vanilla install (the original 8.04 CD)
- does not work on Intrepid beta install (also Kubuntu)
- the patch exchanging the r6168 for the r8169 module does not work for Intrepid
- in the working Hardy installation, the r8169 module is loaded and not the
r8168, but nevertheless it works

Emanuele, I think I used the 64 bit variants (the CD contains both)
since my main motive was to have an operating system that can use the
full 4 GB that I have.

The thing with the older Ubuntu versions is, it looks as if it did not
work in Gutsy. It definitely works in Hardy on my machine. It definitely
does not work in any variant of Intrepid (32 or 64 bit, beta or final,
live CD, upgrade or clean install). And the fact that it is a r816*9*
driver dealing with an r816*8* card is not the sole cause, since this
constellation is in Hardy also, and it works there.

May be a regression.

2008-10-24 Thread Patrick Schueller
Same problem here, with Realtek RTL8168C/8111C ethernet adapter.
System is ASUS X56T laptop with 4 GB RAM and Turion ZM82 CPU.
Kernel boot parameters are noapic, nolapic, and acpi=ht; otherwise it will not
boot.

Vanilla Hardy install (original 8.04 CD) --> works
Hardy with all updates --> still works

Hardy upgrade to Intrepid with update-manager -d --> ceases to work after
reboot with new system
Intrepid beta CD install --> does not work

The network card does not get an IP address via DHCP. Manually assigning
one does not help. No address in the same network (e.g. computer
192.168.2.16, gateway 192.168.2.1, netmask 255.255.255.0) can be pinged.

Already reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212497, but bug is
closed and reported as fixed. The problem persists however.

If you need any logs please say so, as I am not very experienced in
reporting bugs, and, as I cannot work on the broken installation (no
network and no graphics), I'll have to reboot to that partition to
check.

2008-10-10 Thread Patrick Schueller
I have the same problem with an ASUS X56T under Intrepid. However, the r8169

- Substitution of r8169 with r8168 as listed above doesn't work, still no
network
- Hardy 8.04 install from scratch still has network connection after all
updates and reboot. But: lsmod shows r8169 module being loaded.
So: Is there another component of this bug or is this another bug?

[Bug 237759] Re: Cannot print to a printserver connected printer from ubuntu 8.04, while ubuntu 7.10 and 7.04 do the job without any problem.

2008-06-18 Thread Patrick Schueller
Same problem here:

- Hardy with kernel 2.6.24.19-rt cannot print to IP printer
(socket://192.168.x.x) using LogiLink PS0001 parallel printserver and
HP-Lj-2-compatible printer (IBM-4037-5E in HP compatible mode) with "HP
LaserJet 2 Foomatic/laserjet (recommended)" driver. Printer accepts some
data, then switches to "waiting".

- Same printer works flawlessly from virtualbox Windows XP as a guest
under Hardy with bridged networking.

Did not try older kernels so far, as recommended by some.

P.S.: Sorry about the Windows virtual machine bit, no trolling intended.
I mentioned it only as an indicator that it is no hardware issue in my

Tested same configuration with 2.6.22-14-generic kernel (from gutsy
repos), printer works.

Seems to be a kernel problem with the 2.6.24 series, as already
suggested by others.

[Bug 234084] [NEW] complete freeze during access of pccard/usb adapter

2008-05-22 Thread Patrick Schueller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-17-generic

This is a problem I encountered after upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy. My
machine is an Acer Travelmate 220 with a D-Link (NEC) PC-card (PCMCIA)
to USB 2.0 adapter.

Intensive use of storage devices (external hard disk, USB stick)
connected to this adapter reproducibly causes a complete freeze of the
machine after a while. Neither Ctrl-Alt-Backspace nor the SysRq key
combinations work.

This bug occurs under the following circumstances: Hardy upgraded from
Gutsy, Hardy fresh install, Gnome/KDE/terminal, kernel 2.6.24-15-generic
to 2.6.24-17-generic (others not tested).

This bug does not occur: with Gutsy (latest updates); with Hardy and
kernel 2.6.24-17-rt.

2008-08-28 Thread Patrick Schueller
I cannot at the moment install an alpha release since I cannot afford
any problems on this machine. However I installed the 2.6.27-1-generic
kernel into Hardy from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/pub/next/2.6.27-rc3/hardy/ and the bug seems to
have been fixed for this -generic kernel (the -rt variants always worked
fine).

[Bug 236335] Re: 2.6.24 kernel random freezes on acer laptop

2008-06-11 Thread Patrick Schueller
It is probably worth a try to use the -rt (realtime) kernel series
instead of the -generic series (sudo apt-get install linux-rt, latest is
currently 2.6.24-19-rt).

I am experiencing similar problems with the generic kernel series on an
Acer laptop (see bug #234084) when accessing USB devices (via a PC-Card
[PCMCIA] adapter in this case). They go away when I use an rt kernel.

2010-04-29 Thread Patrick Schueller
Just in case anyone reads this and has the same problem, here is a workaround:
Edit /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf and insert/change the line
options radeon modeset=0
This restores the "old" behavior of the driver as in Ubuntu <= 9.10 (working
tty's, reasonably fast, compositing only with xrender, not with opengl).

When the bug is eventually resolved, change it back to options radeon
modeset=1

[Bug 540547] Re: [Multi-GPU] No virtual terminals on radeon HD 3200/3400

2010-04-09 Thread Patrick Schueller
Sorry if this sounds dumb, but why does this bug remain "incomplete"?
Which information is missing? And why does it not get assigned to
someone?

This bug is really a showstopper for anyone with this video card.
radeon.modeset=0 also does not work anymore. The main problem is that
there is no working text mode at all. That means if anything goes wrong
during the text mode only phase of the boot (between grub and kdm/gdm),
e.g. a stuck fsck with a question or somesuch, the screen stays dark (or
rather looks as if the LCD is melting...) and the system is unusable.
The only way out is to reboot - in the example complete the fsck run
from a live CD - and reboot again in the hope that the next boot goes
through.

Any newbie would be totally stuck when this occurs.

BTW, I also tested with the mainline kernels from the kernel ppa, but
there is no difference.

If I can contribute anything to troubleshoot this bug (short of
rewriting the code, I only 'speak' Pascal and Basic well enough), would
anyone please tell me.

[Bug 540547] [NEW] No virtual terminals on radeon HD 3200/3400

2010-03-17 Thread Patrick Schueller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I am currently testing Kubuntu 10.04 alpha3, and everything works OK except
that:
- there is no splash screen and no boot messages on startup (the screen goes
blank after making a selection in GRUB and does not turn on again until the
graphical KDM screen appears) and
- ** the tty consoles do not work ** (Ctrl-Alt-F1 and the like). There is no
adequate response to the Ctrl-Alt-F1 (...F6) keys, i.e. the KDE desktop stays
on the screen, the mouse cursor disappears, but nothing further happens. The
/sbin/getty processes are running for tty1 to tty6. sudo chvt [1-6] has the
same effect. Initially, on Ctrl-Alt-F8 the mouse cursor used to reappear (i.e.
switching back to the GUI worked). After the latest updates, trying to switch
to a virtual terminal seems to freeze the GUI and, since there is no accessible
terminal and a frozen GUI, requires a reboot.

I suspect that the problem has something to do with the framebuffer.

System information: OS: Ubuntu lucid (dev) · Kernel: 2.6.32-16-generic · KDE:
4.4.1 (KDE 4.4.1)
CPU: AMD Turion(tm) Dual-Core Mobile ZM-82 · RAM: 1367392kB/3799764kB
VGA: ATI RS780M/RS780MN [Radeon HD 3200] / ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400
Installed graphics driver: automatically with OS installation, no modification
(must be ati i.e. radeon).
latest updates as of March 17, 21:20 UTC using default sources.list(.d/*) from
10.04 alpha3

What I already did:
1. place Option "DontVTSwitch" "false" in xorg.conf (does not help)
2. uninstall plymouth (does not help)
3. place radeon.modeset in kernel grub line (and remove quiet splash). This
makes the boot messages appear and restores the normal function of the virtual
terminals. This is a workaround, but: slow graphics, no acceleration, no
effects.

The problem does not depend on the desktop/window manager, it appears in
KDE/KWin and whatever Gnome uses (compiz or metacity) alike.

[Bug 540547] Re: No virtual terminals on radeon HD 3200/3400

2010-03-17 Thread Patrick Schueller
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

- I am currently testing Kubuntu 10.04 alpha3, and everything works OK except

+ I am currently testing Kubuntu 10.04 alpha3, and everything works OK except
that:
+ - there is no splash screen and no boot messages on startup (the screen goes
blank after making a selection in GRUB and does not turn on again until the
graphical KDM screen appears) and
  - ** the tty consoles do not work ** (Ctrl-Alt-F1 and the like). There is no
adequate response to the Ctrl-Alt-F1 (...F6) keys, i.e. the KDE desktop stays
on the screen, the mouse cursor disappears, but nothing further happens. The
/sbin/getty processes are running for tty1 to tty6. sudo chvt [1-6] has the
same effect.

System information: OS: Ubuntu lucid (dev) · Kernel: 2.6.32-16-generic · KDE:

from 10.04 alpha3

  What I already did:
- 1. place Option "DontVTSwitch" "false" in xorg.conf (does not help)
+ 1. create a minimal xorg.conf and place Option "DontVTSwitch" "false" in it
(does not help)
  2. uninstall plymouth (does not help)
- 3. place radeon.modeset in kernel grub line (and remove quiet splash). This
makes the boot messages appear and restores the normal function of the virtual
terminals. This is a workaround, but: slow graphics, no acceleration, no
effects.

The problem does not depend on the desktop/window manager, it appears in
- KDE/KWin and whatever Gnome uses (compiz or metacity) alike.

+ note, I am using two screens (laptop LVDS and external VGA-0/VGA-1) with

[Bug 540547] Re: [Multi-GPU] No virtual terminals on radeon HD 3200/3400

2010-03-22 Thread Patrick Schueller
I don't think I have any graphics card related options in the BIOS (AMI
with relatively few settings, laptop). I will look it up at next boot.

The normal graphics modes work well as is, since the upgrade to Lucid
even with 3D effects, also with xrandr and dual screen, it's only the
tty's that are broken.

Yes, I had the same issue. apt-get dist-upgrade did not pull these
packages in. I only got aware that the packages are actually in the repo
after I manually installed the kernel debs from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/linux/2.6.31-15.49 but
forgot one of the kernel header files. apt-get dist-upgrade suggested
that I execute "apt-get -f install". And voilà, when I did this, apt-get
pulled the missing deb from the -proposed repo. To make sure everything
fit together I removed the manually installed kernel and installed the
packages with apt-get using their full names, which worked.

2010-09-12 Thread Patrick Schueller
Still not fixed in maverick as of today, open source radeon driver,
latest updates. The described workaround with radeon-kms.conf still
works.
