[Bug 330811] Re: Can't connect to a hidden network

pauls, I had the hidden network configured and set to autoconnect in the
network manager beforehand. When I issue the iwlist command (sometimes I
need to issue it a few times if I just enabled the wireless until it
sees the network), the kde wallet asks me for a password, and a few
seconds later it is connected. I'm running latest amd64 jaunty.

[Bug 94396] Re: kpowersave suspends to ram after resuming from hibernate

2008-10-15 Thread nils
I had this problem when I had guidance-power-manager or kde-guidance-
powermanager installed, clicking on Suspend to RAM worked, but
suspending with the power button gave that result. It was a little
different though, it would go to sleep, wake, go to sleep, wake, go to
sleep, and then finally be awake. My guess was that several managers
were sending it to sleep in different ways or without locking (see pm-
suspend ?)

I deinstalled all the guidance packages and now it works fine, but the
screen doesn't lock... see https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/283315

[Bug 284782] [NEW] x-server does not refresh background and shows random noise background

2008-10-16 Thread nils
Public bug reported:

Running latest intrepid beta on a lenovo x61 tablet laptop,

lspci
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

Sometimes when changing windows or desktops the background is not
redrawn and contains random data. Not quite random, sometimes I can make
out other parts of the screen that are very distorted. This is only in
the background, and a click on the background causes a refresh and
everything is fine.

I'm not running any compiz effects (completely turned off) and have
nothing special configured either.

I get a completely different interface from Beta2 ... I don't have any

It seems to be more broken than before right now...

[Bug 283315] [NEW] kpowersave does not lock screen on suspend

2008-10-14 Thread nils
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

I upgraded to 8.10 (beta at the moment) and then checked what else was
running... guidance-power-manager was installed (not kde-guidance-
powermanager!) so I apt-get removed it.

Result: on suspend (either running /usr/sbin/pm-suspend, pushing the power
button which is assigned to suspend by kpowersave, or selecting suspend to ram
in kpowersave) lock the screen, even though that option is set in kpowersave.
kpowersave shows the message that it's suspending in all three cases as well.

Expectation: screen is locked on resume.

The Screensaver is set to auto, nothing else in particular configured.

Implication is, that anyone who wakes up the computer gets access to
whatever's open.

g and gu: no results
gui: a few things with 'gui' and a few more that could have the word 'gui' in a
description
guid: no results
guida: a lot of results with maint-guide-whatever (guida == guide???)
guidan: kde-guidance-powermanager pops up and disappears ()
guidanc: same: kde-guidance-powermanager pops up and disappears ()
guidance: shows only kde-guidance-powermanager

apt-cache search guidance shows three results:apt-cache search guidance
guidance-power-manager - A frontend to HAL's power features for KDE
kde-guidance-powermanager - A frontend to HAL's power features for KDE (dummy
package)
sendmail-doc - powerful, efficient, and scalable Mail Transport Agent

[Bug 233993] [NEW] `Inbox': Value too large for defined data type

2008-05-22 Thread nils
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

While opening evolution today I had 20+ unread e-mail and I clicked on
one and it said (as I can remember, I did not screen shot) "cannot
display the content of this message because inbox is full"

I thought there was a bug so I shut evolution down and restarted. Then
my inbox was completely empty (but not my sub folders strangely)... when
I right click on inbox and click properties it says the following:

"Error while Opening folder mbox:/home/nils/.evolution/mail/local#Inbox.
Cannot get folder `Inbox': Value too large for defined data type"

Since, I have tried to delete old e-mails to make space but it is not
doing anything.

I saw a bug report "Bug #197290 in evolution (Ubuntu)" but it only
offers a solution with installing evolution on windows... and I do not
have a windows machine so would really like to solve the problem in
another way.

Can anyone help??

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-08-05 Thread Nils
I recently switched to Windows Vista on my laptop, because of the stuff
not working on Linux (video codecs, dvd, flash, ati drivers, reasonable
power managemen, suspend, hibernate, etc) and the crappy user experience
provided by gnome. Further the desktop search (i think it's called
tracker) did not work correct.

Personally I would recommend to change the topic in "provide a
reasonable user experience" or something like this. I also don't think
that the market share of Linux on the deskop is growing.

drivers, with which everything works, are the proprietary nvidia
drivers. I don't want to hear "works for me" or something like this.

I also forgot to add that nm 6.5 in Hardy is also quite unstable.

Wrong, see nvidia drivers.

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-08-05 Thread Nils
it's not only certain hardware. It's a general frustration with
Ubuntu, for example flash worked in Gutsy.
With Hardy it crashes all the time or there are problems with the
sound (I guess they are related to pulseaudio
or something) The point is: I think Ubuntu should try harder to
provide a better user experience and take QA
more seriously.

Btw: I still have Ubuntu on my Box at home, but I'm really tired of
things which work not really well.

[Bug 120018] Re: vim can't open files under curlftpfs directory

2009-03-18 Thread nils
This is still a problem under the latest intrepid, and I'm fairly sure I've
seen the exact same behavior on my Jaunty machine as well.
curlftpfs 0.9.2 libcurl/7.18.2 fuse/2.7

vim fails with E667: Fsync failed (and the data is NOT written to the file)
cp fails with an cp: closing 'filename.txt' input/output error, but the file IS
created and written properly.
kate complains about not being able to save the file as well, but DOES write it

I'm willing to run test cases, let me know what's needed.

[Bug 120018] Re: vim can't open files under curlftpfs directory

2009-03-19 Thread nils
good ideas for testing. I just tried:

- Situation 1: create a directory (755), touch a file in it, then vi it,
Result: E677, no backup file, no data in it.
- Situation 2: chmod the directory to 770, vi the file in the dir, E507, backup
file exists, but no data in either file (the backup file being empty is OK
since the orig file was empty)
- Situation 3,4: chmod the dir to 777 and try vi-ing the file and chmodding the
file to 666 and trying the vi is the same as situation 2

a cp in that dir with 777 privs also gives the IO error, but the file is
created with the right content.

Anyone in the mood to write a perl or C test script that tries several
write-close-fsync combinations out to narrow down the problem? Funnily
enough kate writes the file but complains, and vi does not write and
complain... maybe a different order of when the backup is
created/written, or a bug in kate that writes the main file even if the
backup fails?

[Bug 345268] [NEW] Kate saves file but says it could not save

2009-03-19 Thread nils
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kate

I have an FTP site mounted with curlftpfs where editing files fails with
vim (see bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/curlftpfs/+bug/120018), so I
tried kate.

- open the file with kate and edit the file
- click save and the error is "The document could not be saved, as it was not
possible to write to . Check that you have write access to this file
or that enough disk space is available."

The file IS written, however. No backup file is created.

Please have a look at the curlftpfs bug for more info on attempts with
other editors.

Kates actions should be consistent with it's deeds. If the file is saved
but no backup is possible, then this should be the error message. Etc.

Running latest intrepid amd64. Kate 3.1.4 in KDE 4.1.4.

Please let me know if you need more info or other tests performed. Best
way to reproduce this is probably with curlftpfs.

[Bug 330811] Re: Can't connect to a hidden network

2009-04-17 Thread nils
If there is no chance of a fix for Jaunty (including a switch to
KNetworkManager) could someone please post a semi-official workaround?
I.e. installing knetworkmanager yourself, using wicd, Gnome NM, etc. ? I
get the feeling that a LOT of people will stumble across this bug in the
next 6 months...

[Bug 330811] Re: Can't connect to a hidden network

2009-04-17 Thread nils
I can confirm that

'sudo iwlist wlan0 scan essid '

works, and connects to the network. I had to do it twice (or maybe it
was do it once and wait a little), but it worked. The network is then
listed in the plasma widget and connected to automatically.

For people who are unsure what their wireless device is (wlan0 in my
case), run 'ifconfig' to see the list of network devices. 'lo' is a
loopback device, 'eth0' are network cards, etc.

[Bug 348885] Re: tracker stops indexing, 100% cpu load

2009-04-05 Thread Nils
I'm running Tracker 0.6.92 and this is still happening after bringing Jaunty to
the most recent update status (4/5/09 9:13 AM pacific time). It affects both my
64 bit Jaunty on my T61 and my wife's 32 bit on a core solo compaq laptop.
Both laptops get so hot, you cannot put them on your lap anymore. I thought my
fan was gone... My wife noticed it first because everything gets quite slow on
the core solo but since I have a core 2 duo CPU it only freezes one.

time, after that, the screen gets garbled. Very annoying. It would be

[Bug 52639] umount.cifs does not remove unmounted volumes from /etc/mtab

2006-07-11 Thread Nils
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbfs

When using umount.cifs to unmount a volume it does not remove the
unmounted volume from /etc/mtab. I ran it with -v ang to the following
output:

optind 2 unmount dir mnt/
ioctl returned 0 with errno 0 Success
umount2 succeeded
attempting to remove from mtab

I think the bug is in samba-3.0.22/source/client/umount.cifs.c on line

[Bug 17599] not resolved

2006-09-12 Thread Nils
I have this issue on a T43p with Kubuntu Dapper. I'm not sure why this
problem is, but it stopped after I switched WLAN on again. When I turned
it back off cpu utilisation was very high again.

I also just setup the laptop and noticed that it does not use linux-686,
so i'm not sure if this has something to do with the problem.

Btw: Why does ubuntu install kernels for such old systems by default??

[Bug 218566] [NEW] [Hardy] X61s function keys not working

2008-04-17 Thread Nils
Public bug reported:

I installed Kubuntu Hardy on an X61s and the function keys are not
working. For example the key to change the monitor output (Fn-F7). xev
recognizes it as XF86Display, but pressing it doe not have any effect.
The buttons to adjust the display brightness do also not work. The
buttons do also not work, if i switch from X to the console and try it
there

I'm also running Hardy on other laptops, for example a Thinkpad T60
there the Fn keys do not generate any events in xev, but work correct..

Can anybody confirm this or has any ideas how to debug, fix this?

[Bug 215184] [NEW] [Hardy] Issues with DVD

Public bug reported:

I inserted a DVD and it was mounted immediatley. But then only root had
access to it, so I remounted it with -o umask=000 and tried again. Still
the same problem. Then I just copied the stuff I needed from it with
sudo.

The real problem appeaered when I tried to unmount it. Several
processes, trackerd, dbus-daemon the gnome vfs were accessing some files
on it. Not sure if dbus is needed I just typed killall dbus-daemon.
Then I decided that it was time to reboot... :D

[Bug 120036] CPU frequency scaling doesn't work on HP Pavilion dv6258eu notebook

2007-06-12 Thread Nils
Public bug reported:

Hi there!

CPU frequency scaling doesn't work on my HP Pavilion dv6258eu notebook,
powernow-k8 seems to have problems with my BIOS, first some information:

Notebook Model: HP Pavilion dv6258eu
BIOS version: F.1A
System Board ID: 30B8
Processor Type: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 (1600MHz)
Memory: 2048 MB

(for full dmesg output see attached dmesg.out)
$ cat dmesg |grep powernow
[ 29.996000] powernow-k8: Found 2 AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology
TL-50 processors (version 2.00.00)
[ 29.996000] powernow-k8: MP systems not supported by PSB BIOS structure
[ 30.00] powernow-k8: MP systems not supported by PSB BIOS structure

Probably it has to do with the missing/incomplete processor section of my
BIOSes ACPI-Table (see attached dsdt.dsl):
[...]
Scope (\_PR)
{
Processor (CPU0, 0x00, 0x1010, 0x06) {}
Processor (CPU1, 0x01, 0x1010, 0x06) {}
}
[...]

but I'm not sure how to fix that. I know about
http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/view.php, but there is no fixed DSDT
for my notebook.

Thanks in advance!

  Hi there!

CPU frequency scaling doesn't work on my HP Pavilion dv6258eu notebook,
powernow-k8 seems to have problems with my BIOS, first some information:

  Notebook Model: HP Pavilion dv6258eu
  BIOS version: F.1A
  System Board ID: 30B8
Processor Type: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 (1600MHz)
  Memory: 2048 MB
+ OS: Ubuntu Feisty Fawn
+
+ $ uname -a
+ Linux nils-laptop 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

(for full dmesg output see attached dmesg.out)
  $ cat dmesg |grep powernow

  {
  Processor (CPU0, 0x00, 0x1010, 0x06) {}
  Processor (CPU1, 0x01, 0x1010, 0x06) {}
  }
  [...]

but I'm not sure how to fix that. I know about
http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/view.php, but there is no fixed DSDT
  for my notebook.

  Thanks in advance!

Setting CPUFREQD_MODULE="acpi-cpufreq" in /etc/powersave/cpufreq fixed
it. However I'm not sure why.

are you sure it's xsane and not the package that invokes it?
