[Bug 244341] [NEW] Mangled video (only green + stripes) with SPC620NC and v4l2
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ekiga I am using a Philips SPC620NC webcam using the v4l2 driver. Ekiga's configuration druid successfully performs all the tests. I can also access the webcam using e.g. mplayer and get a correct picture. In ekiga however, the video display is mangled. It is solely in green and has horizontal stripes all over. I have attached a screenshot of both the correct mplayer and the mangled ekiga video. I am a bit surprised by the fact that there are a couple of bugs that describe similar effects for other video players, regardless of the source: Bug #236179, Bug #182532, Bug #163930. Note that I have neither a Intel nor a VIA graphics card but an ATI Radeon M300 and that I have disabled Compiz. I have found a message describing a similar problem with the v4l2 driver and the Creative Live! Cam Optia: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/ekiga-list/2007-March/msg00013.html In that case the fix was apparently pretty simple, so maybe the same solution can be applied here. The same problem with the Philips SPC620NC has also been reported in http://markmail.org/message/ulxctvbsshjiyf4p by a different person. ** Affects: ekiga (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Mangled video (only green + stripes) with SPC620NC and v4l2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/244341 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Heck, even 20 years ago root ran > into issues like this with NFS. .gvfs is working as designed. There is a difference between being able to impose specific restrictions even on the root account (SELinux) and the root account in general not being able to access all files in /home (as happening with gvfs). In other words, using SELinux does not prevent you from accessing /home/* (or any other directory) unless you chose to *configure* it that way. The fact that NFS has its bug is not a justification for not fixing similar bugs in gvfs. >> Nikolaus Rath and S B, take a look at my earlier comment >> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/225361/comments/11 I >> understand this configuration of FUSE has been chosen because of >> security concerns, as opposed to using its allow_users or allow_root >> options. In which way does the passing of an option to the FUSE library effect authentication? gvfs will run exactly the same way. > Same goes for ecryptfs mounted > ~/private. Root can't access it because the process doesn't have the > decryption key on its keyring. I don't know about ecryptfs, but a fuse filesystem does not need to run as root in order for --allow-root to work (is this what you assume?). > At the end of the day programs simply have to deal with access > denied errors, even when run as root. This bug was marked as invalid > both here and upstream because this point will not change. I would probably agree with you here. But the thing is that programs don't get a simple access denied error. If I have rx permissions on a directory, then I ought to be able to stat() everything in it. This does not work if there is a fuse mounted .gvfs in there. Changing the behavior to allowing root to stat() the directly (but not granting read- or execute permissions) would probably also fix most of the issues. In the above case, we simply have a race condition between stat() and readdir(). But this does not belong here either, so I will try to get this change into FUSE. This is not a valid concern. In Ubuntu, allow_root is by default enabled in /etc/fuse.conf. So even if gvfs does not use --allow-root, a malicious user can simply mount a filesystem of his choice manually and with --allow-root. If --allow-root poses a security risk, it has to be disabled in /etc/fuse.conf and not in individual applications that happen to call fuse. [Bug 230627] Re: Firefox cannot open some PDF files
Here is an update of this bug. It is still present in Jaunty and can be reproduced with the Jaunty LiveCD. An updated test link is www.rath.org/output.pdf The crucial trigger for the bug seems to be that the server delivers the PDF document as application/x-download. I guess that this causes firefox to try guess the actual content type, which it gets only halfway right ("PDF document" instead of the working "PDF file). [Bug 387462] [NEW] 100% Zoom does not correspond to physical size
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org If Zoom is set to 100%, dimensions on the screen are not physically correct (as they should be). For example, an A4 page in OpenOffice Writer on the screen is much smaller than an actual A4 page held next to it. I suspect this is because OpenOffice does not use the dpi value as reported by X11 (127 dpi in this case) but the one set in Gnome Font properties (96 dpi by default) - thereby rendering everything too small. Applications like evince use the X11 dpi and display dimensions correctly. OpenOffice should follow suit. [Bug 380059] [NEW] Installer garbled unrelated LVM partition
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: debian-installer I have (or rather: had) a working LUKS device on /dev/sdb6. The partition type was set to x8E (LVM) since the encrypted volume was used as an LVM physical volume. Now I wanted to set up a second installation on the same system. I created partitions /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3, both with type LVM. I did not perform any initialization. Then I booted the Jaunty alternate installation cd. I chose "Manual Partitioning" and directly switched into the LVM setup. There I added the /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 partitions as volume groups. I never touched /dev/sdb6. I created some logical volumes and saved this setup. Back in the partitioning menu, I noted that the logical volumes were set as "linear" rather than "striped". Since I had not seen any option to change this, I decided to do the LVM setup in the existing system and rebooted the computer. Unfortunately the system does not boot anymore, since it cannot find the encrypted source device. When booting from the Live CD, I found that the volume has apparently been damaged: # cryptsetup luksDump /dev/sdb6 Command failed: /dev/sdb6 is not a LUKS partition Any ideas on how to recover the data are also greatly appreciated. ** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Installer garbled unrelated LVM partition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/380059 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 229952] Re: firefox opens files read-only
It seems to me that what you are actually complaining about is the way Openoffice handles read-only files. The proper way to fix this is to change the OpenOffice behaviour. Making firefox pretend to OpenOffice that the file is writeable may work around this particular problem, it it is bound to introduce new ones. So personally I would report this as a bug in OpenOffice. [Bug 76424] Re: Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation
I'm adding hal as affected as well. According to comment 21, the behaviour could also be fixed by applying the patch included in the comment. Fixing this bug *somewhere* should really be possible now. ** Summary changed: - Hibernation uses old kernel after kernel upgrade causing resume failure + Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation ** Description changed: 1) Apply kernel update (but don't immediately reboot, as you're working) 2) have to move somewhere, hibernate laptop 3) power on laptop to restore from hibernate - 4) look at the login screen, not your resumed desktop. + 4) since the hibernated image does not correspond to the current kernel version, the image will be discarded and a regular boot is done - proposed fix: boot old kernel if hibernate exists. + Result: All data that hasn't been saved is lost, filesystems can be + corrupted and need fsck. In severity this corresponds to a hard system + crash. + + proposed fix: boot old kernel if hibernate exists or prevent hibernation + when a new kernel version has been installed. ** Also affects: hal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/76424 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 76424] Re: Hibernation uses old kernel after kernel upgrade causing resume failure
The kernel's postinst script already provide a way to prevent hibernation: # Let programs know not to hibernate if the kernel that would be used for # resume-from-hibernate is likely to differ from the currently running kernel. system("mountpoint -q /var/run"); if ($? eq 0) { system("touch /var/run/do-not-hibernate"); } I therefore think that this bug is actually in the gnome UI and/or the hibernate script, which both ignores the file created by the kernel and allow the user to hibernate the system anyway. ** Also affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Kernel upgrades without reboot break resume from hibernation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/76424 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
