Re: [Bug 586345] Re: denial of service if evolution running and computer left unattended.
Hi Pedro, thanks for the reply and sorry for my delay replying. I didn't know 10.4 was available. I could work on that one and see but it will take me a while as I have many things on just right now, and I'm not sure I want to risk the time that might be wasted resetting everything to the way I want it after a major system upgrade. In the mean time is there any log file that we could look at to see how the keyboard got lost? I'm sure that is the basic problem. [Bug 586345] [NEW] denial of service if evolution running and computer left unattended.
Public bug reported: Very often when I return the keyboard and monitor to this computer, using my Raritan KVM switch, it is totally unresponsive to the keyboard, and the monitor screen is blank apart from a logo which says "cable not connected". The only "fix" I have discovered is to switch off the computer and switch it on again, an extended procedure from a normal restart, because it usually involves a file system check or the computer mysteriously trying for several minutes to find a device which it says is in /etc/mount but actually never is when I get to look there. I have noticed that this denial of service never seems to occur unless evolution mail is left running. I have another computer running ubuntu connected via the self same kvm switch, and this never fails - as soon as I touch the keyboard, the "cable not connected" logo vanishes and the screen appears. So, how, with a "dead" computer, do I find out what happened and why? Re: [Bug 586345] Re: denial of service if evolution running and computer left unattended.
Still don't know if I can reproduce the same fault in 10.04 but I have discovered that the problem has nothing to do with Evolution. It only occurs if your screensaver "password locks" your login. Switch off this option off, everything works fine. I suspect that once the password lock option is enabled the computer stops listening to, or responding to, the USB hub in the KVM switch, probably because the password bit of code hasn't been properly updated to cope with USB keyboard inputs. You could probably reproduce the fault using your keyboard via any USB hub, but you might need to unplug this and plug it in again or do something similar to simulate the KVM switching to another computer and then back again. So currently either you have a physically insecure account or one so secure not even you can talk to it.:-) Best regards Nick On Mon, 2010-05-31 at 14:29 +, Pedro Villavicencio wrote: > could you try to reproduce the same on 10.04 ?
