Re: [Bug 253076] Re: No X with current kernel (downgrade fixes it)

2008-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
UPDATE - Problem Solved.

I put the radeonhd video driver and voila ..it works.

But the problem is ..in the court of update-manager ===> Update Manager
must know to choose the right driver - Else, thousand of complains will put
the internet optical fiber on fire around the globe right in the first day
after Ibex launch ( I think the this situation is specific for all HD Radeon
Cards ).

I have an Radeon HD 2600 Pro with 512Mb RAM - so the Update Manager must
know in some way to put the right video driver automatically.

So no downgrade on my case - just the right driver.

[Bug 258381] Re: Blank screen when using usplash and kernel >= 2.6.25

2008-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
UPDATE - Problem Solved ( at least for me )...

I put radeonhd video driver instead of Update-Manager chosen driver.
It works.

But the problem is still HOT because the Update-Manager ( during upgrade
process ) don't recognize my RadeonHD so he chose for me a wrong driver
>>> then the blank screen and the rest

If this will be not solved ...a lot of Ubuntu Hardy machines (with
RadeonHD) ..upgrading to Ibex will have the same problem.

[Bug 258381] Re: Blank screen when using usplash and kernel >= 2.6.25

hmm - just upgraded from Hardy to Ibex - upgrade OK - after reboot - just a
blank screen after bootloader.
attached my .xsession log.

dpkg tell me all ok, `xfix` can not do anything, xorg.conf is 'dpkg-
reconfigure'it, `resume` send me back to the blank screen, sudo
/etc/init.d/gdm restart -> put me back to the black screen figure..

I have 2.6.27-6 generic kernel

some directions from here ??

thanks in advance.

Re: [Bug 46520] Re: Grub installs to wrong drive's MBR in default install. No way to change in standard installer.

2008-10-10 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
it's merely a problem regarding -> next upgrade always do some regressions
where is supposed to be plain ground and clean states - I mean is so hard to
quantify every good step forward ( then the next step to be a real progress
) - instead of reinventing the wheel each time ? following development of
Ubuntu for few years I have the bad impression that every step is reinvented
( ? MS money here ?? ).

So we have now better kernels ( better drivers ), tabs on Nautilus but I
can't set my video card to put 75 / 85 Mhz on my screen not 60Mhz - amximum
for now ( I can do that in 7.10 ), and STILL I can't clearly know where the
Grub will stay.

Also we see no measure is taken agains Grub default instalation AND Grub
User Experience ( is so hard to detect hard drives and to make a noob
friendly - step by step ( explanations... ) guide ), no problem I'll
do a Blueprint for that. I'll make this problem public on forums and blogs.
Maybe someone will see that and help us to help Ubuntu to become human
friendly.

Sorry devs.( if some dev. read this ) but as a friend of Ubuntu I think that
something serious is to be done - to broke a glass on this case. Like your
dutty - but not for money, I work for Ubuntu too. I install desktops for my
friends and their friends all for free ( ...time here ), I recomend - and
install servers sometime ( as in the city-hall of Nasaud - Romania ), and In
general I do my own war with local zealots from PC shops, magazines.

[Bug 253076] Re: No X with current kernel (downgrade fixes it)

2008-10-10 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
I have 2.6.27 - problem is still here

I do an upgrade from Hardy to Ibex 2 days ago
everything goes fine ...but after the splash for boot loader was gone the black
screen step up and won't die.

Please see my last comment on
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/258381   ->
xserver errors attached.

So I do a lot of 'tricks' to get back my Gnome but no any chance (
recovery mode, xfix ..etc ).

Yesterday I do an upgrade from CLI, (some 38 packages was on the
upgrade list) and today I observed I can't use Ctrl + Alt + F2 to get my
CLI interface. A blank screen with an clipping cursor is all I got.

The single place where I can give commands to Ubuntu now is the root
console (recovery mode).

My machine : Intel CoreDuo 2 (6mb internal cache), Gygabyte Chipset, PCI
Expres X16, ATI RADEON HD 2600 Pro 512Mb RAM, 2GB RAM memory.

the question is if I can recover my installation without reinstalling
Ubuntu from CD ( I have a lot of usable things on /opt -> htdocs for
example - but I don't have enough space to copy for save all my needed
stuff - I can start apache and and I can dump out my databases but
there are a lot of other things and too little space so save them all -
I know it's a beta software but I can't imagine I can't start Ubuntu in
a way or other... ).

Any help appreciated.

2008-09-13 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
nope
HARDY is OK - For me - but this is not a general rule - I'm not the
comparison element, so the this bug should be investigated because seem to
be critical

Morgan - the point is that an kernel upgrade ( so an Ubuntu upgrade ) will
rewrite your boot menu, even is customized - your problem can be from
menu.lst too ( but sure ..can be from the wrong MBR location as you suggest
here )

My menu.lst was customized but an recent upgrade rewrite my menu.lst so for
next boot I can't see my XP installation on grub list so I need to repair my
menu.lst by hand. This is a potential bug too - because on the upgrade
proces not tell me in clear terms about "what" configuration will change ( I
was asked to choose between the producer config file or to keep actual file
[but no reference about what file] )

Re: [Bug 46520] Re: Grub installs to wrong drive's MBR in default install. No way to change in standard installer.

2008-09-14 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Sam - to ensure - I will never get into this situation ( yep I was in your
situation too - my Ubuntu install wrote on MBR over XP loader - so I can't
boot any OS ).

If you have XP - U can recover XP boot with a bootable win98 floppy with :
fixmbr command afer the floppy boot is complete OR from your Windows CD (
details here :
http://amazingrando.wordpress.com/2007/04/05/fixmbr-is-your-friend/ )

on the linux side :
I'm afraid you have to reinstall Ubuntu from an Ubuntu Hardy CD

if you want to protect your data on linux partitions for further troubles -
do partitions as I do - a boot partition ( first ), a swap partition (
second ), a root partition ( third ), and finally a home partition.

so you need to mark them at the manual partitioning phase, like that:
1 = /boot
2 = /swap
3 = /root
4 = /home

my /boot has 500mb
my /swap has 2000mb
my /root has 65% from rest of space
my /home has 35% from rest of space

if you have doal boot - U have to put Grub over XP loader where XP is
installed ( on the partition where XP is located ). Grub will recognize XP
loader and will offer you as a boot option.

Also if you have a /home partition your data is safe ...even if your linux
is gone - you can install other linux and after boot your data will be there
...

[Bug 269010] Re: nm-system-settings crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2009-08-08 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Until 7 August ..all OK with my network.
Then after upgrade - network Manager won't work at all ( upgrade was for Karmic
- on 7/8 August )

my connection is DSL - so, fortunatelly I can connect using pppoeconf
utility.

But the point is ..network manager is unusable and this is bad. This
kind of problems should be history now..

For example I use Karmic Koala now and this bug is alive again.

What should I do to repair my problem ?

..my Apport submit this bug - maybe is useful to see the command line
responses ..

[Bug 123449] Re: fglrx does not work

2007-10-13 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
it's not the best or "indicated" way - but for a quick & dirty solution
U can install Envy. Envy will install last ATI driver - for the actual
driver the empty xorg.conf is a known issue - they repair this issue but
on fglrx 8.40.4 which can be installed only with Envy now.

Remember this is a complementary solution - expected solution is to find
fglrx 8.40.4 in Gutsy - also until fglrx 8.42 I think the problems will
persist.

It's about ATI driver - they move some development documentation under
open source so in the future we can expect true drivers - I mean better
drivers than in Windows world.

maybe not the besto solution Install Envy - this will install fglrx 8.40.4

because the gutsy restricted modules will overwrite your installed modules by
Envy - anyway It will took 2 minutes to reinstall fglrx with Envy again )

[Bug 46520] Re: Grub installs to wrong drive's MBR in default install. No way to change in standard installer.

2007-10-05 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Yes it's a 'geek button' - beginners (first time linux users) will choose
default option in 98% of cases without any understanding about hd0 / hd1.
Something really useful can look like -> Install to Windows boot partition
(with explanation : this will let you to chose preferred OS from the Windows
Boot Manager, at the windows boot) // Install to Linux boot partition
(targeting on the Linux boot partition, with explanation : this option will let
you to choose preferred OS at Linux boot from the Linux boot manager, but be
careful - on this case you may need to choose your linux Hard-disc from Bios
when U need to boot on Ubuntu ).
Some derived cases regarding 1: different partitions on the same Hdd; 2:
different partitions on 2 (or more) hd's, should be covered too.

This kind of adviser will have GOLD value for new linux users and for mid linux
users too.
This must be the way, without exceptions (for entire Ubuntu concept not only
for Grub Installer ) if we want to grow a friendly, global community on a 'non
geek' world.

Else ..no problem Ubuntu community will be large and growing anyhow ...but we
can be sure we will miss something - even 0.1%, even a single person.
For me it's ok as is now.

Eventually GRUB INSTALLATION STEP can present at start 2 main modes :
-Advanced Grub Installer (with grub extra options - if we admit that geeks
don't like to read again what they already know) -Default Installation (Guided,
very clean and clear, explain about all possible situations ).

Drawbacks - NO ONE - This is a Win - Win situation. And a good example
of how we (Ubuntu community) understand the way that world should be.

[Bug 151954] Nautilus freeze desktop and kill CPU when handle SVG files

2007-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I work for some vectorial logo's with Inkscape.
After I do primary shapes and I imported a 24mb png inside the svg file, I have
to embed image file on svg [ here can be a point of this problem ].

Now when I save this file to desktop, Desktop(Nautilus) freeze, CPU go 100%.
Re Login (instead restart) and the same problem. Because the file was saved
to desktop,
Nautilus tried to "understand" this SVG file with embed bitmap and try to
create a thumbnail.

Then I restart - the same problem. Each restart - Nautilus freeze
desktop because the filw was there.

I need to go as ROOT, to install Thunar, to navigate with Thunar on HOME
partition and to move SVG file (68 mb) in other folder.

Then I can enter with my USER credentials on computer and all was OK again.
Just for testing purposes I navigate with Nautilus in the folder that contain
SVG file.
Nautilus freeze again, CPU 100%, so I need to restart.

I put my folder on a stick and I go to a friend with Gutsy to test on
his desktop.

I obtain the same behavior. Nautilus freeze, CPU gone wild.

On XP I can have 200mb Corel Draw files with thumbnail and no problem.

I think Nautilus has problems with the bitmap binary code embed in SVG.
But this is only a guess...

I hope to see this fixed before Gutsy launch.
We need a true stable Nautilus.

[Bug 151955] Nautilus strange bahavior after copy mp3's on SONY walkman (NWD-B103 usb)

2007-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

After inserting Sony Walkman in USB I can see the music folder - I deleted some
mp3's and I add some mp3's from my computer.
All OK here
But when I wanna copy other mp3's from my computer - all went wrong - Nautilus
tell me he can not do this because too many files open (not a single file open
at all).

I can't open folders or any link on my Desktop, because of the alert
that told me ' Too many files open '.

Seems that Nautilus forget to signalizing about closed transaction -
after the first mp3 transfer from my computer to Walkman.

Re: [Bug 151954] Re: Nautilus freeze desktop and kill CPU when handle SVG files

2007-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
In addition to my previous mail (1 minute ago), I can open folder with
SVG files - Nautilus does not crash -> just push the CPU to 100%.

If I close this folder even I don't do any operation, Nautilus still
remain at 60 - 100% CPU.

I must kill him every time.

Curiously only some SVG files can do this - seems to be SVG files where
are embedded graphics OR complicated fills like pattern fills [svg
patterns with a lot of details - repeated many times in background of an
object].

Right now my CPU is 100% - I can't do almost anything ONLY because I
visited a folder ;).

I tried to open a terminal - terminal window appear and disappear
instantly.

Maybe is not a Nautilus fault but 99,3% peoples will perceive that
Nautilus is unstable.

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-02-20 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
he still has his right points.

we advanced in manny points - on other points - we are in the past.

we need to change some structural concepts. Nautilus for example [take a
look at pathFinder on Mac OR to Dolphin on KDE4 to see where the modern
file managers go..]. Gnome simplicity does not mean 'hi integration of
functionalities' ..yet.

[ Also Nautilus take sometime 5-7-8 seconds to open a small folder.
Nautilus open quick a big ntfs partition and slow a desktop folder.]

Gnome in general must offer advanced functionalities - then let user to
choose from - not to offer some 'ready made'layouts by a group which
think for the masses. So gnome must be more, more configurable.

By default Gnome UI design is not 'user driven' but 'Gnome devs.
driven'. there are different functional needs for different groups of
users, we need to give them all - then they choose what they need and
hide the rest.

This is a thinking level that Gnome / Ubuntu / linux in general must
reach in order to touch the normal user (for enterprise level situation
is different).

Also - Printing system - is much better than in the past 2 years but
still not completely integrated into desktop - here are a lot of new
drivers too. On Hardy for example I have 3 icons for print (Gnome
Control Center) -> Printing, Printing and Default Printer. This is
confusing for an average user (an XP user for example). Why not a single
icon ( Printers / Faxes / Scanners ) with an UI where user can choose
step by step all things he / she need.

Multimedia. Wrong Players. I use compiz now in my Hardy up to date. The
only player which can play well almost any multimedia file (music or
video) with compiz enabled or not.

Totem the default player is less usable.

Other video player does not work OK with compiz, only MPlayer -> until
you do some Pro settings.

But simply users don't know to do those settings. They expect to click
and play.

So I can't understand why the wxVLC is not default video player in
Ubuntu.

Rhythmbox default music player - is poor compared with the death Listen
or with Exaile.

Why no one can see that - and reinvent Listen ?. I use a beta version
0.6 - not on the repos' which work perfect. Why this version is not on
the repositories ?

Screen and Graphics is broken on Hardy, Videocard detection - broken,
language settings are broken, keyboard detection and sound are broken
too, device detection are in someway strange and worst than into Gutsy
(on Gutsy all of these work OK).

A lot of things - now in alpha stage - must be fixed JUST to work as in
Gutsy, until the final release so ...too lite space for new
functionalities / features that will add Ubuntu on the 50% of world
desktops.

I just started a big list of needed changes on structure / UI /
fundamental metaphors / + mockups.

Finally I am curious if this huge effort will count somewhere in the
devel land.

..we will see, anyway I keep the fight but I have a moderate opinion,
because a lot of things are ...just not OK.

[Bug 138424] launching applications kill stop compiz

2007-09-09 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Gutsy tribe 5.

After installing tribe 5 (I wanna do a fresh install - instead internet
upgrade - to see what's new with the new installer) everything work ok
with compiz.

After I do regular updates and Install Emerald - all OK again but ..let
say after 20 minutes when I launch ..let say Inkscape - compiz die and I
got metacity again in all cases.

NO frezee, no nothing - fallback is OK.

But I must restart compiz each time with compiz --replace (untill next 20
minutes).
Sometime is enough to open a folder.

I think is not a big problem to solve.

** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 138424] Re: launching applications kill stop compiz

2007-09-09 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
UPDATE

I do a little test to see what programs OR what else can broke Compiz so
I restart Compiz with compiz --replace.

All OK but when I try to open a SVG file with Inkscape - my desktop do a
short tremolo and compiz gone, metacity come.

This is the message from terminal :
Floating point exception (core dumped)

After that, I tried to see if Compiz crash launching other applications but I
can't - Compiz behaviour was stable.
I only can crash Compiz doing a doubleclick on a svg file. Then Compiz crash
and Inkscape don't open the file.

If I do this without Compiz started, Inkscape open the file without
problems.

Trying to crash Compiz just launching Inkscape I obtained different
results - sometime crash ..sometime not.

I'll attach the svg file here.

[Bug 138424] Re: launching applications kill stop compiz

2007-09-09 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
I forget to say Emerald was just installed but I don't use it at the
testing moment. So, Emerald was no implied.

I don't use Trevino repo OR Amarath repo.

Only pure Gutsy repositories.

OUT OF TOPIC FOR 2 MINUTES => I need an indication about WHERE, or WHICH
team I have to contact about the Compiz / Emerald tray launcher.

Last week I tried Fusion-Icon which was made until Tribe 5 release ( this mean
that fusion-icon think compiz is not started by default ) so if someone try to
put fusion-icon in tray - Gutsy at start will start Compiz - then Fusion-Icon
will start Compiz again for the second time.
Gutsy by default don't install this window manager which is a loss.
Fusion-Icon is the perfect solution to set up Compiz and Emerald or to choose
other window manager if U wanna play a game for example.

The only thing that keep me away from Fusion-Icon is he start compiz for
the second time and I don't like all those flick's on my screen when GDM
start (fusion-icon contain exec a command like compiz --replace &
emerald --replace).

If this behaviour can be corrected Fusion-Icon MUST be included in
original Compiz installation. It's a logical move to have this option at
your click - not to search all time for Apperance->Desktop
Effects->Normal Effects.

Re: [Bug 74195] Re: mono crash after login

In short the answer is NO - I dont have any problem now with Mono.
I have a daily updated Gutsy box, (I follow close Gutsy development) and
I can told you -> no more problems with Mono. I consider this problem
solved with the past upgrades.

U can close this "bug" for now.

Where I can write about other Gutsy problems, suggesting enhancements ??
I mean where I can write - and some peoples can really read my notes - I
don't like to waste my time doing graphics / animations - I think U
think the same.

Main target of my observations is GNOME - Nautilus Functionality -
Desktop Integration - GNOME UI problems.

[Bug 138424] Re: launching applications kill stop compiz

2007-09-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Nope, I just don't use Emerald - Emerald was just a nice try - works OK - but
for me Compiz + Metacity borders is enough.
I have a pretty nice UI (Clearlooks + NuoveXT + T'ish Lively.

Compiz work OK - almost no CPU usage (1 - 5 percents with all effects) -
but sometime when a window is created by a program Compiz just stop
working.

this is the message : Floating point exception (core dumped)

I have a lots of extra gnome libraries (I use Cinelerra and Kdenlive)
maybe something is wrong there. Anyway the results is unpredictable
today I had no problems with Inkscape but each time I launch gFTP -
just stop working.

Will be helpful for me to find HOW TO trace this crash.

Also, maybe this bug has some replications - maybe you will find someone
with the same problem and maybe linking those bugs we will find an
approach. I just don't have enough time to search on the Compiz bugs
stack, but I can try to catch this error is someone can tell me HOW TO.

[Bug 138424] Re: launching applications kill stop compiz

2007-09-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
FOUND SOME...

Well I've managed to reproduce this bug - in a "scientific manner".

I tested window behaviours when the Compiz crashed.
Is not about programs - I can stop Compiz using any aplication that can open a
FULLSCREEN window.

For exmple Nautilus.

By default I "trained" my folders on the desktop to open their windows
at 50% from desktop not full screen

Now I put a folder on fullscreen mode - I close that folder - and next
time when I open this folder (Nautilus memorize last size and position
of windows for each folder and for some applications) - Compiz gone.

Same things for other applications.
-> When in non fullscreen mode - ALL OK.
-> When any folder OR application was opened directly in fullscreen mode -
Compiz die.

About bug behaviour
When I launch some programs - they wont open windows - they crash Compiz then
stop.
After Compiz gone and Metacity come - Applications work normal ( open ..close
..etc ).

For the latest testing series - I used UNREDIRECT FULLSCREEN WINDOWS
option from Advanced Desktop Effects Settings -> General Compiz Options
-> General - but no better results.

I made I think 30 tests - with the same predictable (from now)
behaviour.

I hope this will help

[Bug 138424] Re: launching applications on fullscreen kill compiz

2007-09-13 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
NOW THIS IS GREAT...

After last Compiz upgrade on 13 Sept. 2007

Checking for Xgl: not present.
Blacklisted 'ati' driver is in use
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

Well I don't use FGLRX at all indeed.
Blacklisted 'ati' driver was good enough yesterday. ...or, Gutsy put the fglrx
driver by themself ? - let's check ..nope
the same hardware configuration but updated compiz wont work so I can't give
other reports on this bug.

in general lines this is not the expected behavior, after an upgrade - my
suggestion is to prevent testing user community - hey we put something new
inside that need XGL so install XGL first.
second big interior question is where I can obtain this blacklist ? maybe I'll
buy other card to support Gutsy.

Back to the bug report -> Regarding my last post referring to FULLSCREEN
WINDOWS - I do an experiment before Compiz upgrade.

I put XFCE Desktop.
Guess what ...
Compiz work perfect with XFCE - no problems - ans I was used exact the same
themes from GNOME - ClearLooks and Nimbus.

Well from here I'm afraid I can't help more - I don't know If I can put my
Compiz back without reinstall Gutsy - so I have to wait for next TRIBE.

Best wishes to all

[Bug 139384] Re: Compiz blacklist an old ati card, known to work

2007-09-13 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
today 13 September 2007 - after Compiz upgrade - I have to confirm this
bug.

In the name of thousands Ubuntu users with ati drivers I think.

also I have to confirm that this fix is good ..is working for me.

but the problem is -> PLEASE GUYS READ 2 TIMES BEFORE UPLOAD on
repositories things that can affect thousands other users [ yes I know
Gutsy is not recommended for production - but I mean testing users that
are here to test other parts of Gutsy and like to use Compiz ].

Other few upgrades like that and a big part of Ati users will do other useful
things with their free time.
some guys are here to test other kind of things - I am sure 80% will not search
and apply this solution (change blacklist).

Yes - is not my problem - but I said the truth. I know some peoples
testing blender, gimp, webmin ... and other beta programs from this
Ubuntu beta - they like Compiz too, they will ask themselfs - why ati
driver was good yesterday ..and today is not ?.

so - please take care at the first stage - else the generated traffic
regarding the results of a little error from the first stage could be
huge - a huge lost energy - for 1 minute extra checking.

also the "blind patching policy" is a lazy, Microsoft genuine technique
- should not be followed on any form - they will sue everyone, even
sugar babes for that.

;)

sorry is someone is offset. I was too. That's why I do this request for
a bit more attention before uploading on repositories.

Peace brothers and sisters.

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-03-02 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
In addition to Mark...

Well it was a time when I was tired by reporting bugs and receiving back
messages like - your report has multiple keypoints inside - please make
a detailed report for each one and send him to the corresponding team ...

Pretty annoying yeah ? - maybe 5 from 100 will follow the recommended
way.

Because I don't like to renounce, In I tried to adapt to their
(imperfect in my mind) model and guess what.

We adapt both. Yes - in time I learn Linux (becoming a linux geek) and
they learn from their inevitable(for a new baby born)
mistakes(communicational + other nature).

So I can see the empathy working here - they work hard to adapt and
improve communication with users ( bug reporting, patching, wish lists,
etc ) - and we realize that the things are in change pretty fast, and we
are a part of this process. My tired face is not automatically set from
now one when I see a problem - instead I know if I report that problem -
if is a true problem - they will solve that as soon as they can.

Now Ubuntu is a Linux territory where the battle for the future of
computing is on it's big fires. Bugs, flame wars, frustrations,
brilliant but unseen ideas - all are here (it's a place where Natural
Selection Live) and is normal for an concept who want to change in
better a part of this world.

After my first steps I understand they know about imperfections - but
any problem has it's own time, and things are changing fast here.

For example : I prepared some screen shoots and some txt files to report
2 nasty bugs form me ( after each login -> a pop up with "language EN_US
did not exist ..." and a bug regarding fglrx and impossibility to set a
default screen resolution ..from gconf OR xorg.conf - because always
Ubuntu choose the biggest resolution for me and was nasty ...). Before I
was able to send my reports -> after a daily upgrade I see they where fixed.

So mr. Adrian or other like - solution is not to blame or to numbering (
time wasted activities ) - solution is to help if you can OR to wait for
a better future coming in a batter day (hoping until then that a brave
soul will win all nasty battles for you).

About M$ bug -> don't forget M$ has over 70.000 employees - and they do
What ?. Innovations ? - ah yes Innovations - they all like to talk about
that(all time if I remember well)- but I'm waiting on the last 100 years
or some too see some really new ...(I think I'm a bit blind here or my
memory lost some RAM, sorry this is my fault) - Better software ?
..please tell me one or 2 pieces. Hardware yes - I read an old Morse
code message talking about M$ hiQ PC components (mouses, keyboards,
audio systems) - and I believe that.

But about software - they never listen final client, simply M$ user -
because - in their vision not the client should make rules for the
future - only M$ rules, M$ standards, world can be a M$ world or can not
be at all...

Or according to my vision - peoples / clients / users must dictate
Software Future not a people or 2, from some dark office.
The first affirmation is the Ubuntu way. Maybe not perfect yet - but
it's an idea that's OK to die for.

I remember I wrote mails / sign petitions few years as a webdesigner to
complain about IE big problems. No M$ ear hear.

When Firefox rise, what we see ? - a Galactic Revolution. All M$ peoples
that can carry a gun( even some womans ..it's a legend now), start to
work on IE 19 / 24 to erase the enemy.

Or this is not a sign of a big, respectable company(and I know what i
say).

I was nothing until Firefox, then automatically M$ hear my voice "...
loud and clear" an we become instantly friends - we change our phone
numbers, and we call each other by nicknames (Don' ask me now for Bill
phone nr. - I promise him to keep this number secret [ free only for IE
users ..but their number decrease as the seconds gone ..I don't remember
to see any one here ...from the last week ]).

So in 3 words - I prefer to die on the light side - with all their
imperfections - instead of being a gray slave for a dark master.
Certainly, here I feel I'm in life.

I have bugs - yes, but I have freedom also.
Dark side slaves (still)had bugs, But they had walls around also.

Which is better ?. Think about liberation now ...

Well that said -> back to killing / reporting bugs / writing blueprints
/ make wish lists / drink coffee /..and so - cigar pause is over.

;)

2008-03-04 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Ok Duncan, first is not my text - it's the proposal that bug report tool
offer me.

I think was OK on his way.

Second - It's about a Metabug ( yes " ...which is also in package
***..." is a metabug which require a final resolution, I'll speak about
that later on this mail), so I'm not reporting about my problem. I'm not
asking for help ...regarding your solution, I can do that without fill
in bug reports - but this is not the proper solution. Imagine mr. Duncan
you tell that to a beginner - he will ask you beck probably what is
...kernel.

So my report is there in hope is be useful for something.

Now about the metabug -> is present from first Ubuntu.

Maybe a packager does something wrong.

But is not OK for peoples to see this bug too often.

And this is happening almost each week for a package or 2. Is not an
Open Office error.

Is a decision to take => so if the same package is there = we should
interrupt the upgrade process ? - what if our program take count on the
library presence and continue upgrade process ( if is THE SAME library
what's the real problem ? - do not copy the file but give to installer
option TRUE when he check paths and libraries - so the upgrade process
can continue). OR if is the same file -> OVERWRITE THE FILE and GO ON (
you can check the file version using checksum, numbering system, file
length, etc ) - BUT NOT BROKE A PROCESS BECAUSE ONE OF THE NECESSARY
FILES IS ALREADY THERE.

This is my message and please take count on that.

About the specific part of the bug - I can delete the file from it's
location and from dpkg index so after that Upgrade will work OK - no
necessary to upgrade my kernel ( which may work or not ...).

Regards,
Sorin

2008-03-04 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
ok Steve,

U tell us " ...Silently overwriting files is not a sound practice,
because the files are almost always not the same, so overwriting them
would make for even worse bugs."

I agree is not a good practice to silently kill non convenient output
-but- and is a BIG but which in many cases is not considered .. is to
obvious, let's talk a bit about this bug on the last 2 months ... in 99%
of last cases ( as on my experience ) was the same file name and version.

If you read carefully what I wrote there about file control ( there are
few methods - including parsing file content [as brute force] ) you can
realize that must be not so hard to find a method to see if is the same
file with the same content - OR not.

Now - if is the same file - the same content - I don't see the reason to
not overwrite.

So I not recommend that as a best practice - but if we have an evidence
- why we should stuck on the problem instead of going forward.

Now the second point. If is not the same file -> User can choose what to
do. OR if we don't consider here so smart users - then a rule (or more)
must be defined ( regarding the same filename => to keep the bigger
version / to keep the larger file / or some... ).

Enfin - this can be good for both parts - for the distro and for the
independent programmer. If you made a program distributed by others you
will enjoy idea to put a RULE file on your package - that can be
interpreted by the mister "Update Manager" - to see what he can do in
any case. It's about a simple file where -> case 1 -> do that, case 2 ->
overwrite, case 3 -> delete older file put the newest, case 4 -> phone
home ...etc.

That's the point - not to ignore this bug ( is too often repeated,
search bug reports from the last 2 years ...). So please consider a
possible solution eventually ONLY for the case where we have SAME
VERSION - SAME NAME - SAME CONTENT ( generally python scripts from
different sources put the same files in site).

An we just walk forward a bit.

..On my opinion of course.

Anyway, that's my message -> from time to time is good to go somewhere
on a higher point to see what's here down -> just to not forget the big
picture.

[Bug 189668] Re: Audio files must be opened by totem by default

2008-02-06 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
As in many other situation you can right click on the music file and ->
play with [ ... list ... players ] / or Add to [ ... player ...]
playlist

Ideally is to set default actions for any file from something like
Preferred Applications like -> ON CLICK = play in Listen/Exaile/etc.. ON
DOUBLECLICK = Enqueue on Listen/Exaile/etc ...ON MOUSEOVER = Preview
audio / video[on a miniwindow] ON RIGHTCLICK = Show contextual menu
... ETC.

This way once all actions can be set for entire system ...all OK. No time or
nerves wasted.
You install a new player ? - no problem - go to update filetype actions.

This must be - something very general - system wide - that can set
filetype options for a lot of circumstances(not just open with). User
driven process. Not every new installed app. automatically register
itself as default.

Set and forget.

[Bug 180409] Re: bugs in fglrx - blank screen - artifacts

2008-01-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
A new Day - A new Experience -> I manually installed ATI fglrx driver
from AMD website - I mean ati-driver-installer-8.443.1-x86.x86_64
because I don't need the artifacts on my screen from fglrx coming from
Hardy repositories (this is a known problem - no fglrx from repo' - no
artifacts - and I still wondering on that). Please see my attachments
with screenshoots.

The problem is when Ubuntu must do an upgrade. Update-manager see
8.443.1-1 lower than 1:7.1.0-7-11+2.6.24.4(from repo).

So my Ubuntu want to "upgrade" to a lower version.
Is pretty unbelievable why Synaptic could not see the difference - because of
the numbering system. Please do a numbering conversion patch - because now this
problem hold on place a lot of other upgrades such as Compiz upgrades or other
upgrades related to fglrx packages.

Thank you.

[Bug 165016] Re: update-manager errors on upgrade process

2008-01-13 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
It it not an dist-upgrade is a simple upgrade.

I consider this one a metabug - because is present since Ubuntu 6 ( then
I saw him first time ).

Now it's here in Hardy. And it's a showstopper bug. A non geek can not
deal with. And stop. That's why I consider this one as a META bug.

Also is not a specific for a specific software package - I meet this bug
on a lot of upgrades - here is about how Update Manager can deal with a
duplicate file which try to overwrite an existing file. Overwrite or Not
(some decisions mus be taken here [ keeping count on numbering system or
not { lower number can be overwritten by the upper number ...etc } ])

[Bug 138424] Re: launching applications on fullscreen kill compiz

2007-09-21 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
OK, problem solved ..need to point now to Compiz Developers

The strange behavior for Fullscreen opened windows (Nautilus or other
applications) was caused by a Compiz plugin named PLACE WINDOWS under
WINDOWS MANAGEMENT SECTION.

This plugin has 4 possible states = 4 possible ways to put a window on
desktop when this window is generated.

1 Centered
2 Smart
3 Maximize
4 Random

The subject of this bugreport is RANDOM mode.
When RANDOM mode is activated - this plugin try to calculate a random X and Y
start points for the new generated window.
This is in oposition with the case when a window try to start in fullscreen
mode.

I will try to note this to plugin owners - maybe this mode can be
disabled for windows opened in fullscreen mode.

At least I found a possible source of this problem (not only for sdl

in short, this is what I observe (copy from 138424 ...)

btw, this is happen with a lot of instalations(lot of programs)

I put here this report in hope that you can cut away the liquid rescale

Else I know this is not a plugin-registry bug - but a mainstream one -
so I will report this to the adequate team.

Ubuntu need to be bulletproof itself before that ...realistic speaking
few releases and few years are necessary to see this objective personified.

But I'm afraid, Ubuntu need to step on front(of other linux'es) -
regarding the UI metaphor.

We all need that - best thing right now - is the sweet taste of liberty
which is in the air.

So no problem - I don't misread the previous post ;) - I'll keep my

list) also no monitors detected - just empty boxes), and close Screen

now because I can't change my resolution to 1152x864 from xorg.conf nor
from gconf and also not from Screen Resolution (because there the offer
is 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024 - not what I need), my
question is what is the secret key to re-enable 1152x864 resolution
(which was perfect in last 3 ubuntu releases).

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-11-15 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
This is a good point of view
but only one face of the problem (1000 left...).

The central point here is not to ask average users to read Dostoievsky,
or Hesse or Aitmatov - but to convince system integrators and computer
vendors to read Dostoievsky because they can (and they are the
difference not this large mass of Joe Doe).

At this point - they can put a linux Flavor on each computer - for a
better price per system but they are afraid about client reactions like
-> "I can't install MSOffice on my new computer !!!..." (and examples
can continue).

I see that here - a friend call me to see why he can not install
MSOffice - he buy a computer with Ubuntu - and he dont' know he has
Linux - he's only problem was why he can easy install MSOffice on his
old computer - but on the new computer he can't.

I realize that the computer vendors don't know [Computer + Ubuntu +
Crossover Office] are less expensive than [Computer + MSWindows].

In fact computer vendors don't know too much about Crossover Office,
they don't test it to obtain a reliable solution - so we have to
contact/help/encourage computer vendors to implement this better solution.

Here we need to put the big focus - else... convincing every single
people will take 1000 years probably.
