Installing linux-firmware solved the problem. However, the system still ocasionally freezes when booting. This happens only in normal boot, not recovery mode. I have an SD card semi-permantly stored in the card reader of my Dell Latitude D420 and keep unmounted. Every time i resume the system from suspend to ram, the SD card is mounted and Nautilus pops up a dialog explaining that I have inserted a card that contains pictures. Since the card has been in the system for a while, this gets a bit annoying after a couple of times. I have the same problem and I think that it is hardware issue. The most straightforward fix is to blacklist kernel module psmouse to disable the built-in pointing stick and use an external mouse in a USB port. I have the same problem with Lenovo X60. Changing monitor configuration when desktop effects are enables causes the display to freeze. I only get a black screen with a cursor that does not move. The only way to get out from this lock is to reboot the computer. I can SSH to the machine, so other than the frozen display, things seem to be OK.
