[Bug 303423] [NEW] Calculator crashes when you edit number in specific order
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gcalctool Follow the following steps to reproduce this bug: 1.Make sure the view is on scientific display mode 2. Type in the number 1.005^1701010.100 3. Move the editing cursor to the position after the 7 4. Hold down the delete key on the keyboard. 5. Observe the first few characters right of the 7 are deleted, but after at the moment the decimal point is about to be deleted, the calculator application hangs. Thanks. Dear Xavier, Thanks for the feedback and thanks for looking into it. I'll raise anything else odd I notice, as an aim to contribute to making Gnome and Ubuntu better. Thanks for you own work on the Gnome / Ubuntu product - it is a great collaborative work. Best wishes, Mike Fairbank. [Bug 499109] Re: Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started
There is not much issue now. The title of this bug is totally wrong - you are right, I didn't realise that it actually was opening on the first time and becoming a notification icon. Sorry about that. The only issue is the message which occurs when you type "rhythmbox" at the command line: ** (rhythmbox:6966): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed ** (rhythmbox:6966): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed WARNING: Unhandled message: interface=org.freedesktop.DBus.Introspectable, path=/, member=Introspect If this message is normal then please close this bug. [Bug 512518] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed
I've enabled apport permanently to generate crash reports. I've just recovered a crash report saved by apport into /var/crash. The file is attached. This crash report was detected directly after an X-freeze, shortly after the next restart. The X-freeze on this occasion happened while trying to log on (I was still typing in the password to log on when it froze). I hope this is relevant / helps. ** Attachment added: "crash report" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/45804102/_usr_bin_glxinfo.1000.crash -- Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/512518 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Ok I've burnt and tried the latest 32-bit ubunu-10.4 "release candidate" but it won't boot at all. [Bug 512518] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed
I've just made a proper install of ubuntu onto a dual boot partition of my harddrive. This will enable me to apply upgrades more easily. So I've done that, and then run it (under acpi=off, since that's all I can do to prevent this problem), and fetched all the latest ubuntu updates for Karmic. This has brought the kernel version upto 2.6.31-20 (generic), however that does not fix my problem - I still have to run under acpi=off. Acpi=off makes the computer work well, and completely prevents this bug, but it seems to knock out certain functionality such as wireless internet and sound, so it's not a long-term solution for me. [Bug 513482] Re: a java program that causes X windows to hang
Please can the this importance of this bug be raised to "severe", because that what a reproducible x-windows total crash is? Please can it then be pushed upstream to x-windows? Whether it is java that is causing X-windows to crash or not, X-windows should handle the error more gracefully than this, so there is at least an enhancement that could be done to X-windows here, and possibly to java too. My system occasionally crashes with symptoms like this (definitely not while using the java debugger, but I might have had some java applications running in the background, I'm not sure), so I hope fixing this bug will make my linux experience generally more robust. -- a java program that causes X windows to hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/513482 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 512518] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed
Public bug reported: I've just burnt a Live CD from the Ubuntu.com website today for 32 bit Ubuntu. I've tried to install it on "Live Mode" on an Asus Notebook PC (Intel Celeron Processor, 1.40Ghz, 500MB Ram). It goes through the boot processes okay, Displays Gnome, and then crashes almost immediately after trying to open any window. The mouse pointer still moves, but you can't click on anything (i.e. nothing responds to mouse-clicks). Ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing. I've tried installing it in "safe graphics mode", but then the boot sequence doesn't ever finish - it just hangs with a black screen (and no keyboard response). [Bug 499109] Re: Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started
I'd like to try to help you more but I cannot understand the page http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash. Here are the problems: 1. It says "First, check if there is a package with a -dbg suffix in the main Ubuntu repositories. These are the debug symbol packages, and are equivalent to '-dbgsym' described below. You can safely use either one, but not both at once." How do I do this? Please will you edit the Wiki to make it clearer. Aren't the contents of the Ubuntu repositories determined by Ubuntu? 2. It asks me to create a file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ddebs.list, with 5 lines in it. I did this using gedit. So the first line of the file created starts with "echo". Then when I run "sudo apt-get update" I get the error message: E: Type ‘echo’ is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ddebs.list Thanks. Please will you edit the Wiki to make this clearer so it's easier for the next person too. [Bug 513482] Re: a java program that causes X windows to hang
Attached is a smaller version of the java code that causes the crash. Hopefully that will make it easier to analyse. I don't think there's much point in going any smaller, since the cause of the bug is probably in X11/Gnome/Java and the size of the code is insignificant to those packages, but I can shrink it further if someone asks me. It is the same instructions to cause the bug, i.e. put the breakpoint on line src.MainClass:45 and run it in "gdb" as before. [Bug 529072] [NEW] it is difficult to edit text in text fields - keyboard is ignored a lot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xfig A lot of text fields don't easily allow keyboard editing. For example, if you open a fresh instance of xfig, and choose "file:export" then a window appears. 2 editable text fields in this window are "Output file" and "filename mask". Click in these with the mouse pointer to give them focus. Start typing into them. Use the cursor left and right keys and delete keys and space-bar on the keyboard to edit what you are typing. Use the mouse pointer to click into the other editable field and do the same there. Keep doing it, and often you notice immediately after pressing the cursor keys or spacebar you can immediately no longer type letters, or delete lettors, or cursor left and right within that editable field. The bug doesn't happen every time, but for me it does about 50% of the time I try to edit text fields, so please play around with this to try to reproduce this error. If I try this enough I can get the bug to occur every time (I only need to open xfig once, and I only need to open the file:export window once, but I do need to click and edit between these two editable fields quite a bit to guarantee reproducing the bug). This affects many fields in xfig, e.g. the way you "edit" objects in your fig means you have a lot of edit fields to use and change. It makes it really hard to get any work done. I have to try editing everything 4 or 5 times before it works. I found this bug was present too on my old version of Ubuntu. I've tested it under KDE and the bug is still there. This bug is making xfig so difficult to work with that I've switched to using Inkscape. [Bug 538673] [NEW] tracker-extract seems to briefly consume 1.5GB memory and slow computer right down
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: tracker In normal operation of computer, very occasionally computer suddenly slows right down for about 45 seconds - mousepointer is very slow to respond to movement, and windows are too slow to respond to clicks. This has been hard to identify the cause because the computer is so slow to respond it's hard to get system monitor opened to see the offending process. Anyway I've finally managed to view system-monitor within the 45 seconds, and it seems to be "tracker-extract" program that is responsible, that was consuming over 1.5GB of RAM on my machine. It was hard to see though because the 45 seconds finished almost as soon as I'd viewed it, so it very quickly disappeared from the top of the process list when ranked by memory usage. So is "tracker-extract" the offending process? Can it be made a little less hungry of Memory (+ CPU) please? [Bug 591896] [NEW] various user interface issues
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gcalctool I am using gcalctool 5.28.2 Here are some user interface suggestions: 1. When in scientific display mode, pressing the lower case "L" key brings in an obscure financial function. I think financial function shortcuts should be disabled in scientific display mode. I was hoping I could just type "ln" in to get the ln function. 2. There is no item on the help menu to "report a problem". Less importantly: 3. It would be good if there was an "Ans" button so you could type "Ans+Ans^2" which would act on the previous answer. 4. A "go back to last edit line" button (like cursor up and down goes through the history in a bash prompt) 5. [Bug 513482] [NEW] a java program that causes X windows to hang
Public bug reported: I have a simple java program that causes X windows / Gnome to hang with my hardware if you perform a few simple steps. I'm using 64 bit ubuntu, Linux Kernel 2.6.31-17-generic, with java version "1.6.0_16" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_16-b01) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.2-b01, mixed mode). I've had the bug happening on older versions of java too (back to 1.6.0_12). If you want me to submit this bug report to java then let me know, but this bug doesn't happen on other operating systems with java, so I think it's possibly a linux/gnome bug. Here are the steps to reproduce the problem. You need a recent version of java 1.6 installed. 1. unzip the attached folder and cd into it. 2. run the java debugger by typing "jdb" 3. in the java debugger, type "stop at src.MainClass:45" 4. in the java debugger, type "run src.MainClass" A window should open that displays a drop down item. Change the drop- down item from A to B. This causes X windows/Gnome to hang. The mouse pointer still moves but you can't click on anything (i.e. nothing responds to mouse-clicks). The java code attached is the minimal code I could create that causes the problem. It took hours of crashing my OS and rebooting to get it that far, but it probably can go smaller. [Bug 499109] [NEW] Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox Version: Rhythmbox 0.12.5 Ubuntu 9.10 Release:9.10 I have to click on the icon twice to get rythmbox to start. The first time I click, the mousepointer changes to the animation that shows it is busy. So it looks just like it's loading. But then nothing opens. The second time I click on the icon, Rhythmbox opens instantly (no loading time needed) - as if it's just maximising the window, not actually loading it from scratch. Thanks for the reply. 1. Typing rhytmbox from the command line for the first time causes the error message plus a hang. [Bug 499109] Re: Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started
Okay, I realise this may be a deliberate feature now (apart from the error message I get from the command line). 1. Clicking on rhytmbox once in the panel at the top of my desktop causes a second rhthmbox icon to appear on the right of that panel. Clicking on that second rhythmbox icon opens rhythmbox as I'd expect to see it. Closing the main rhythmbox window just minimises it onto the second icon. To close it properly i've found the "quit" option on the second rhythmbox icon. Sorry for wasting your time here. It's changed it's behaviour since Jaunty so that confused me. You might still be interested in the error message and hang I get from typing "rythmbox" once from the command line though. Thanks for looking at this. Sorry if I've wasted your time. Update manager also prompted me to do "sudo apt-get install -f" and "sudo dpkg --configure -a" to clear things up, which worked eventually. I would recommended that this bug be rated more seriously. It's still present in ubuntu 10.10. Leading up to my experience of this bug, I had been trying to open a corrupted file in both VLC and Media Player, so maybe that was the cause? [Bug 513482] Re: a java program that causes X windows to hang
I don't know why this bug has been re-opened. The Xorg-server developers analysed this bug carefully and diagnosed it as Java misbehaving. I raised this bug and as far as I'm concerned it's been passed on to the responsible software owner- which in this case is Oracle's Java. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/513482 Title: a java program that causes X windows to hang -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 591896] Re: various user interface issues
Thanks. I've raised these upstream at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=624470 I've removed point 2 as you say it's fixed already. It is a real shame scientific mode is being removed :( More useful than the financial functions for me. Thanks. [Bug 2080739] [NEW] installer manually partition, next button is grayed out
Public bug reported: During the 24.04.1LTS installer, on the manually partition page, the next button is greyed out if your hard-drive already had a legacy-boot version of Ubuntu on it. If there is not already a uefi partition on your hard-drive, then the Next button is never enabled, and all the options of choosing a drive on which to install the boot sector are also greyed out. Hence the only way to get past this page is to go back, and choose "standard install" instead of "manual partition". That workaround works (but then it formats your whole hard drive, which is not ideal!) Also, there should be a way to create a UEFI partition from this screen, but there isn't. These are both showstoppers for encouraging new users onto Ubuntu. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2080739 Title: installer manually partition, next button is grayed out To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/2080739/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 2080740] [NEW] There is no way to add a UEFI boot partition on the Manually-Partition page of the installer
Public bug reported: On the Ubuntu 24.04.1LTS installer, on the Manually-Partition page, there is no way to set up a partition to host the UEFI boot loader, if it doesn't already exist. When you add a new partition, the only formats available are EXT4, etc. But what format should we choose for the UEFI boot partition? There doesn't seem to be one (or if there is, it's certainly not at all clear). This should be fixed. It's a show-stopper. It prevents you getting past the manual-partition page, unless you are lucky enough to already have such a UEFI partition on your HDD. (I've also raised a related bug 2080739 about when this UEFI partition is missing, the NEXT button on the manual-partition page is permanently disabled.) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2080740 Title: There is no way to add a UEFI boot partition on the Manually-Partition page of the installer To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/2080740/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 2080739] Re: installer manually partition, next button is grayed out
This bug is causing other people problems, e.g. https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2491043 sounds to be exactly the same symptoms.
