[Bug 133192] Re: Blank screen or distorted image because of wrong default AGPMode value
I have lockups with recent Debian testing on a K8 board with Radeon 9250. Earlier the card had to be run in 4x mode although the only option in BIOS is to run 8x. I just removed the card to save myself the headache. Do I have a (supported) sound card? on some prominent place like next to the "About Ubuntu" and/or in the "System Administration" submenu just above. [Bug 370235] Re: low graphics mode stomps on itself
These are attached to bug 370234 However, the problem is in no way hardware dependent, you should be able to reproduce the issue by breaking your xorg.conf so that X server no longer starts (ie adding Driver "invalid" in the Device section). The problem here is that the "safe xorg" UI runs in an X server by itself, and when it tries to restart gdm the X server with the "safe xorg" user interaction is still running on the VT where gdm would want to start the safe X server. -- low graphics mode stomps on itself https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/370235 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 373232] [NEW] no UI for im-switch

However, I did not find out how to enable SCIM so that it would be active in my en_US.UTF-8 locale. I know there is im-switch, but - It is not configurable from the Preferences menu - I could not get it to turn on SCIM anyway, the only option seems to be default (and default-something) I sure could inspect the im-switch configuration files and session setup scripts to find out if one of the options really should turn on scim (and it perhaps does not work because it has non-standard hotkeys on Ubuntu) but I guess this should be easier than that. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- no UI for im-switch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373232 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 62195] Re: edgy update-grub destroys kopt
Well, the fix to this problem is trivial. Actually there are many possible fixes. a) make the script note that the conversion was already performed, and not re-convert b) make a separate script for the conversion and run it on system install or system upgrade but not on package upgrade c) make a dpkg(debconf) question about this that people using apt/aptitude directly would see and people using graphics would not The non-trivial part about some bugs (both Joe @ home style and advanced user style) is to convince Ubuntu people that a fix is indeed needed. Since you found such a bug and it gets in your way my only advice is: Switch to some other distro! Do it right now, don't hold you breath!! The Ubuntu people are really stubborn, and if they decided to not fix something they won't. Oh, and thanks to whoever posted the link for building a kernel package. Building a packaged kernel with autogenerated initramfs makes using UUIDs with custom kernels easy but that apparently does not fix everything. -- edgy update-grub destroys kopt https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/62195 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry, i did not notice that one of the comments saying this should be fixed was finally from an Ubuntu developer, more than a year after a bug in boot loader caused solely by Ubuntu packaging was marked as high priority. My attention span is apparently somewhat limited. Thanks for committing a fix finally. It took about 1.5 year which is somewhat long for what I imagine as "high priority" but perhaps it will get into Intrepid final at least which would be nice. Still this is not really trolling as there is that evms bug with similar impact that was only resolved by obsolescence of all Ubuntu systems carrying it. I guess it is somebody else who decides which bugs are release-critical and should be fixed but that does not lessen the number of use-critical-bug years present in Ubuntu. [Bug 139210] Re: ATI Radeon 9200 crashes with Gutsy driver
It is currently unknown how to fix this. The change in the radeon driver fixed some configurations that required manual setting but broke some other configurations so that manual setting of the AGP mode is required. I have no idea about AGP but my suspicion is that the radeon AGP driver authors did not reverse engineer enough of the original driver to set up the AGP mode flawlessly in all cases, and rely on the BIOS to do part of the work. The card than has to be used in the mode for which the BIOS set it up, and it is not always obvious which mode it is, especially with some buggy BIOSes. -- ATI Radeon 9200 crashes with Gutsy driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139210 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238635] [NEW] setting up printers is hard
Public bug reported: Hello I tried to work with the new Gutsy GUI tools for setting up printers, and they make the task very hard. There is the CUPS web which is not enabled by deafult and from what I have heared it is not supported in Ubuntu. This is pretty much OK. However, the GUI tools are a nightmare. There is a user tool for setting the default printer, and this is all. Fist this tool is very unintuitive as it shows a list of printers, and theone that was selecetd when the tool was started is the default one. There is no obvious way to tell whic one it is other by restarting the tool. Second, there is no way to set default printer settings for the user. Like paper size, resolution, etc. And start/stop jobs. Perhaps the icon in the system tray is for accessing the print job queue but there is only one icon. Does it contain documents for all printer, or would multiple icons apper, or what? And why there can't be an icon in settings? Also it is not possible to remove jobs when the printer is stopped. Well, I am not sure it's actually stopped. The UI in printer management says Enabled, and the check box is empty. When I enable the printer it is possible to remove my job then. The admin interface (System-config-printer) is also a nightmare. It allows some settings but it does not display them in realtime. This is particualrly bad for the "enabled" state which can change behind its back when the printer is error-policy:stop which is needed for printers with Epson-style stateful language. They would print garbage after an error. The design of the admin interface is innovative but it brings in quite a few problems that the standard interface with printer icons and context menus solves nicely. It can display and change the "Started/stopped" state in realtime, and for details a special dialog exists that can be displayed when needed. Of course, as the dialog displays the state of the printer when it was invoked, and the user invokes the dialog when interested in the printer state ti usually works out quite well. In the new interface the dialog shows the state of all printers when the tool was started which makes it quite hard to use. You have to exit and restart the tool completely before every use. A long standing issue is that gs filters for old printers keep running after a printer error, and even after the job is removed using the UI/CUPS. The only way to restore the printer to a usable state is 1) turn off the printer 2) stop all jobs and remove the current job 3) kill all processes belonging to the user "lp", especially the process named "parallel" or "gs" as these would continue feeding garbage to the printer. 4) turn on printer, reenable, reprint ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- setting up printers is hard https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238635 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I tried to uninstall the printer and now I cannot install printers anymore. The gnome cups manager does not offer any printer drivers. The cups web interface does not work either. First it reported Error: Unknown or Error: Bad request when adding (and then also when listing) printers. Removing printers.conf did not help. When it was recreated the errors appeared again. Removing and reinstalling all of cups (except the stuff that is held by lsb), foomatic, and hp* did not help either. It just produces blank page on adding a printer, and the list stays empty. I guess the next thing to try is installing Debain packages or using the source. So much for user friendly distros. Just to make sure I tried memtest, and it did not find any errors. How do I tell in the gnome-cups-manager wether I am installing the printer using the hp backend or the usb backend? Since the gnome-cups-manager is the preferred method it should be possible to clearly distinguish the two backends in the UI, and the ui should provide a hint that the hp backend is needed for hplip to work. So should the dialog that says the printer is not installed. [Bug 49107] Re: hplip cannot find DeskJet 5440 printer, despite CUPS's claims to the contrary
OK, the gnome-cups-manager works for me after upgrading the remaining pre-release gnome packages to current. The cups interface works since I added cupsys to shadow and root to lpadmin (I authenticate as root in cups). The failure when cupsys is not in the shadow group is very nice - one gets a blank page, no error, and the operation is not finished. The hplip tools are much more helpful when the printer is installed using the hp backend than when using the usb backend. I wonder why the ink level monitor worked but the rest of the tools did not. In the gnome-cups-manager it is impossible to tell the usb backend from the hp backend (except that the HP backend option is listed second - not the default(!), and has spaces in the printer name). I guess some more obvious distinction would be helpful. So would a sentence or two about using printers with hplip when a hp backend printer is found. Since Ubuntu is supposed to be user friendly I would expect that connecting the printer and clicking through a few dialogs should be enough to get the printer going. If I read a HP Printer howto I would probably get the printer set up correctly at the first try. But I thought it was the goal of Ubuntu to make the distribution "BFU" friendly so I tried the "BFU" approach this time. I'm sorry if my impression was wrong and I need lessly wasted your time. [Bug 32302] Re: Duplicate printers listed when adding HP printer
If there is a choice there should be enough information shown to the user so that he can choose the right option. The fact that there is already an UI that does not provide sufficient information is not an excuse for providing insufficient, even less information. If the problem is solved by providing only one option the information is not needed anymore, at least not in the UI. [Bug 54362] Offer the correct driver in driver selection
Public bug reported: For autodetected (ie USB printers) the printer model information is available. Thus it should be possible to automatically preselect a driver that matches the printer or is very close. For HP DeskJet 5440 the first DeskJet driver is selected. This is clearly suboptimal, a driver >= 5000 should be selected (which is quite a few screenfuls lower). ** Affects: gnome-cups-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Offer the correct driver in driver selection https://launchpad.net/bugs/54362 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 158392] a ubuntu thame with dark background
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-themes There is no Ubuntu theme with dark background in the theme package that is installed by default. There are the special high contrast themes that do not look well on hardware that provides sufficient contrast, and there is the Darklooks modificattion of Clearlooks that is in the extra themes. Darklooks is usable and does have dark background but it looks somewhat bland since it has no colors. Themes with dark background are useful because some screen defects manifest more noticeably when dark text is rendered on light background making the text harder to read. Also I find too light backgrounds tiring for my eyes. [Bug 24280] Re: [Theme Manager] No installation option for system wide themes, difference is not communicated in the user interface
Since the user has root access anyway, allowing to use the user's theme is not a problem. There are certainly many other holes like this in GTK, and the only way to avoid them is to not run GTK applications as root, ever. For one, the application does apply the users theme settings, it just searches for the theme in the wrong place. If you want this kind of security the application should *not* use the user's settings. However, there is one more problem. If you su to an user other than root the ~/.themes might not be accessible. Anybody doing that must do it manually, though. So they should also know how to make their theme available. ** Summary changed: - [Theme Manager] No installation option for system wide themes, difference is not communicated in the user interface + applications run through gksu cannot use themes in ~/.themes -- applications run through gksu cannot use themes in ~/.themes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/24280 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It might be that it works if the Single Correct Upgrade Procedure is followed. But this is a very specific and narrow case that does not happen on many systems. Who would update a system that is about to be upgraded to a new release? Doesn't the upgrade process ever break? What should people without a gui (on server/remote systems) do? I guess the change is too fast. Ideally a change that causes such serious breakage should be done in two steps. First make the evms package obsolete, and give it some time to disappear. But it can disappear only if the update tools do show it as obsolete package that should be removed. Then it would be safe to remove the kernel patches. As a fixup when we are already in trouble it would be desirable to release an updated evms package in Gutsy which would refuse to start whatever evms does if the configuration is broken. -- Device-mapper errors: dm-linear, lookup failed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/115616 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 112186] Re: weird scim setup
OK, changing the language to US English gave an UTF-8 locale which fixed the problems with terminals. Sure the C locale is not very fitting for writing characters that are outside of ASCII. I could have figured out if I looked. But if Gnome can warn about such trivial things like missing icons (or more serious things like failure to load keymap) there is always room for more warnings. How should I figure out that US English is an UTF-8 locale is a mystery. I could just try a few. Or try to find out how gdm maps the pretty names to locale names. But that is not the sort of thing a GUI user is supposed to do. The gnome dictionary applet is still broken. The default scim configuration is still different from other distributions and harder to use. The good thing is that dead keys work when scim is not enabled (hidden). In some setups they only work when scim is enabled and the English/keyboard method is selected. -- weird scim setup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 39815] Re: Cannot install from CD-ROM with broken DMA
I tried to connect the cdrom to a different computer to get the info but it worked there. I also had a problem with a Sony cdrom connected to an i440BX mainboard. The system would lock up when trying to read the cd, and it required me to wait for a while, press a key(!), and then the kernel woud reset the interface and disable dma. It also worked when I tried to connect the drive to a different board. So I would suggest disabling cdrom dma on i4x0 chipsets by default.
