So I tried Hirano's -19~33 kernel, and I was able to boot, but crashed

[Bug 110009] Re: [Feisty] LTSP: libGL error: open DRM failed

2007-05-27 Thread MattW
I am also having a similar problem when connecting to an Ubuntu 7.10 box from
another using ssh -X.
GLX apps work on the client but when running a glx app from the ssh server I
get the following errors:
libGL error: open DRM failed (Operation not permitted)
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering

The is no problem when doing the same using an old SuSE server and the
same client.

Output from glxinfo running on the Ubuntu server is attached.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"

2010-03-19 Thread MattW
ok. guys.. I didn't read all the posts because the bickering started to
make my head hurt. I am as passionate about Ubuntu as most of the people
that posted here. I'd show you the tattoo but it's in a private place.
:) Seriously, the passion of this argument is good but not directed in
the right place.

Stop and think for a second.. Dismiss all the personal attacks and clear
your mind. What is one of the primary reasons that people have embraced
Ubuntu so passionately? Most of your personal answers can be boiled down
to one point: openness. The ability to make it your own. While I
understand the reasoning to dress up the new OS to a more appealing
look, it changes the usability of the interface. I don't agree with it,
but I understand it.

It has been assumed many times that the purpose of improving Ubuntu is
to increase market share. Considering where the majority of the market
share lies, Ubuntu defaults should focus on making those users (who are
primarily very, VERY non-technical) comfortable with switching over.
It's a sad fact, but if you make non-technical users have to think about
basic usage actions, they will be less likely to switch. Most of them
don't even know what a DOS prompt is in their old OS, much less a
terminal in this new OS. Look at it from the perspective of the target
audience, not the perspective of us that have been using it for years.

If one of the goals of the new release is to pull users from the OSX
religion, you are on the right track. However, I can tell you that you
won't be nearly as successful as you would be targeting another market.
You're are not investing your resources well at all.

Rhetorical question: How hard would it be to add a toggle button under
Customize Theme in the Appearance dialog? If it restricts the ability to
build custom themes or opens a can worms, fine.. toss a shell script
somewhere safe for those of us that could actually find it, instead of
requiring non-technical users to find threads like this to feel
comfortable.

[Bug 354824] Re: Jaunty Beta doesn't boot on Samsung R510 with 4GB RAM

2009-10-20 Thread MattW
When I boot the Kubuntu Karmic Beta live-cd with acpi=off I get the missing GB!
It reboots after a few seconds without acpi=off.

Using the function keys or the power button causes it to instantly
shutdown but as far as I know everything else works :)

I'm on a Samsung R510 too btw.

[Bug 1155819] [NEW] Plugging in Logitech G930 USB headset breaks mouse click behaviour

2013-03-15 Thread MattW
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd: (Note: I get the same behaviour in kubuntu 12.04 and kubuntu
12.10)
Description:Ubuntu Raring Ringtail (development branch) <- running kubuntu
13.04
Release:13.04

To reproduce:
1) Plug in the USB dongle
2) Wait for the headset to connect

As soon as the headset connects (e.g. after connecting the USB dongle)
the application which currently has focus will be the only one which
receives left mouse click events. This happens in both GNOME3 and KDE4.

Alt+(Left,Right)Click + Drag stops moving/resizing windows.
Left click does affect keyboard focus.
Scrolling the volume wheel on the headset down acts like a middle click and
scrolling up like a left click.
Synergy also stops being able to move the mouse outside the current screen as
soon as you click inside the host screen.
The window decorations (including the window which has focus) stop recieving
mouse events.

(Expected behaviour is unaffected mouse behaviour and headset volume
wheel functionality)

It is possible to move a window around by doing:
1) Connect the headset with the window active
2) Left click and drag outside of that window
3) The window will be moved as if you were Alt+Left click dragging from inside
the window.
4) A second left click will move mouse focus to the window below but will not
move that window above the one which previously had focus

This person seems to have had a possibly related issue:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-926996-start-0.html

dmesg output from unplugging/replugging USB dongle:

Mouse click behaviour breaks as soon as the headset reconnects.

Workaround:

Running: modprobe -r usbhid; modprobe usbhid; temporarily fixes mouse
click behaviour (but not the volume wheel clicking).

The mouse click problem comes back when moving an audio stream to the
headset via kmix.

Mouse click behaviour returns to normal immediately.

Occasionally the headset will start working as expected (volume wheel
affects system volume, mouse behaviour is normal) but unfortunately I
have not been able to work out how to reproduce this.

[Bug 173843] Re: static network settings not applied

2008-04-29 Thread MattW (seattle)
Saw this behavior in the released Hardy Heron on i386 hardware on
monday.

Solution after setting static ip info was to manually run:

/etc/init.d/networking restart

as root. Verified new address with:

ifconfig -a

Annoying, but will only need to do it once ever until reinstall

Re: [Bug 50430] Re: NIS has problems starting before the network comes up

2009-10-13 Thread MattW (seattle)
Chuck,

This seems to be working, but my box isnt a super clean test - its had
upgrades from earlier revs and I cant
remember if I moved the /etc/rc2.d startup script #'s around... can you
tell if this is the stock order of init scripts?

tes...@lucky:/etc/rc2.d$ ls -la
total 20
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 5 13:47 .

if it is the same as a default karmic install, then I think the bug is
fixed.

if I have time, I could do a fresh karmic install and test - which ISO
would you like me to use to test this?
thanks for checking in...

BTW: Karmic Xorg server has been really nutty lately... thats my current
problem. Just logged a bug. :)

Matt

Re: [Bug 450651] Re: TTY gets corrupted after latest updates in Karmic

2009-10-14 Thread MattW (seattle)
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 448977 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/448977

Im on the prerelease testing upgrade path from 09-04-> karmic and this
got broken for me during an upgrade.

I was just able to resolve this issue by going to ubuntu menu -> system
-> administration -> hardware drivers
and selecting the newest Nvidia hardware driver for my vidcard.

I also did the usual aptitude update; aptitude upgrade

after I rebooted, it looks ok now.

This doesnt solve the automatic update problem tho - is there any way to
force the hardware driver to a newer
version at aptitude update time, or is that a user- or manual-
config-only option?

New installs of Karmic, presumably, wont have this issue - ?

Matt

2009-12-18 Thread MattW (seattle)
Ludovic,

This device and configuration has been working perfectly for months -
then broke with the
linux kernel upgrade of a week or so ago. the kernel after that was a
little better, but still broken.

Im going to persist with this bug - as this is supposed to be a 'Long
Term Support" Ubuntu Release - This is not a power user's system &
we've taken great pains not to muck around with the box. Im not keen on
reinstalling.

I will try to reassign to the kernel group, not sure I have launchpad
permissions to do so.

Thanks for the note :)

Matt

Re: [Bug 50430] Re: NIS has problems starting before the network comes up

2010-01-04 Thread MattW (seattle)
I will second the recommendation to remove network-manager...I also
have had success in earlier revs of ubuntu
in re-ordering the startup scripts so that NIS starts before autofs...
dont remember if I had to do that in Karmic or not.

This problem has been around a while now on various ubuntu and other
linux distros. Network manager gets in
the way in a fixed-ip "corporate" environment. On the other hand, NIS is
a real pain if you are getting and releasing IP addresses
frequently on a wireless LAN, which I believe is now a more frequent
user scenario than a corporate scenario...

[Bug 1409959] Re: after upgrade from 3.13.0-43 to -44, UEFI system will not boot past grub

2015-01-14 Thread MattW (seattle)
The machine is On BIOS A03 on Dell Optiplex 3020, UEFI boot (not secure
boot)

I just Upgraded to BIOS A05, no change in problem

Grub starts, if I dont touch the keyboard and the new kernel boots by
default, I sometimes see this error:

loading linux 3.19.0-03a902.rc4
loading initial ramdisk...

ignoring BGRT: invalid status 0 (expected 1)

gave up waiting for root-dev

Alert /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root does not exist, dropping to shell

Busybox

(initramfs)

If I boot Recovery of the same kernel, I get a bunch of devices listed, then it
locks up

[Bug 568704] Re: debian-installer preseed "d-i mirror/http/proxy" sets env http_proxy

2011-09-19 Thread MattW (seattle)
I am also seeing this error on Debian Squeeze (debian 6) on i386 when I use
Debian Installer.

If the Debian / Ubuntu folks want to save a lot of traffic on their public
mirrors, it makes sense to fix this bug.
I am about to run hundreds of nodes worth of installs with about 600 packages -
if you'd like me to hit your
ftp.us.debian.org an order of magnitude less, give me a way to do so with
preseed!!!

thanks,
Matt

This might be a slippery one... suspect the bug may not actually be in
tcsh but in some other package... will be interesting to see how this
one is routed. :) Ubuntu devs: Thanks for your efforts! -M@

Re: [Bug 534629] Re: AssumeDefaultDomain does not work

2010-08-03 Thread MattW (seattle)
Folks, versions prior to 8046 have a security flaw - Get something
newer, if you can find it see the advisory below:

Likewise Software has posted a security advisor on our Likewise Open
forum announcements
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?LikewiseSoftware/a4f78d058f/1b43a64120/5eac187271.
This notice is to inform you of a critical update to specific
Likewise Open packages that we have made available on our product
download site. Below is a copy of the security advisory message.

_

Likewise Security Advisory LWSA-2010-001
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?LikewiseSoftware/a4f78d058f/1b43a64120/6600c07eb4

_

Package : Likewise Open
Service : Likewise Security Authority (lsassd)
Date: 26-July-2010
Platform(s) : Linux, OS X, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, FreeBSD
Versions: Likewise Open 5.4 (prior to build 8046)
  Likewise-CIFS 5.4 (prior to build 8046)
Likewise Open 6.0 (prior to build 8234)
CVE(s) : CVE-2010-0833
_

Summary:

A logic flaw has been found in the pam_lsass library that,
when run under the context of a root service (e.g. sshd,
gdm, etc.), will allow any user to logon as a lsassd
   local-provider account (e.g. MACHINE\Administrator) if
the account's password is marked as expired. The cause
is that the pam_lsass library uses SetPassword logic when
detecting that the uid is 0 therefore not requiring
that the intruder validate against the expired password
before being allowed to specify a new password.

All Likewise Open users are encouraged to upgrade to
the latest released packages for their version or to
to employ the stated workaround until such a time when
   an upgrade may be performed.

This defect was first reported by Matt Weatherford from
the University of Washington. Our thanks to Matt for
   helping improve Likewise Open.
_

Workaround:

Explicitly disabling the MACHINE\Administrator (or any
other lsassd local-provider accounts not in use) will
prevent unauthorized access. This may be done by running
the following command as the local superuser. Replace
with the hostname of the local system

 $ lw-mod-user --disable-user "\Administrator"

You may verify that the account is disabled by running the
   lw-find-user-by-name command

 $ lw-find-user-by-name --level 2 "MACHINE\Administrator"
 ...
 Account disabled (or locked): TRUE

6.0 have been made available from
