[Bug 291044] Re: Kernel panic in Intrepid Ibex (8.10)

2008-11-22 Thread Mark Darbyshire
I started getting this same problem today. My laptop has frozen in the
past, although until today I'd never noticed the caps and scroll lock
keys flashing. Today my laptop has frozen twice, and on both occasions
those lights were flashing. I'm using the 32-bit version of Ubuntu 8.10
on a Dell Inspiron 1520. I'm using 2.6.27-7-generic with backports.

I'm getting the same problem on amd64. I'm using kvm version 1:84+dfsg-

[Bug 359447] Re: kvm segfaults

2009-05-07 Thread Mark Darbyshire
Installing the update from jaunty-proposed (amd64) has stopped my
virtual machine from segfaulting. Before my XP virtual machine was
segfaulting all the time. It would always segfault during a disk
consistency check when booting up, and if I skipped that check it
wouldn't take all that long before it segfaulted while I was doing
things anyway. Anyway, it's working now so thank you very much for the
fix. :)

[Bug 367137] Re: virt-manager freezes when applying hardware change

2009-05-17 Thread Mark Darbyshire
Is anyone able to suggest an alternative way to reduce the number of
cores used in a virtual machine to 1? Because of Bug #228442 I'm
currently having to put up with my virtual machine using 100% of the
CPU, so it'd be very nice if I could reduce it down to 1 CPU (which, as
I understand it, will stop the virtual machine from hogging more CPU
than it needs). Thanks.

[Bug 367137] Re: virt-manager freezes when applying hardware change

2009-05-18 Thread Mark Darbyshire
The same bug has been reported in Red Hat:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=487013

A patch has been posted that fixes it: http://www.redhat.com/archives
/libvir-list/2009-March/msg00195.html

"In the QEMu driver, the qemudDomainSetVcpus() entry point is calling
into another entry point qemudDomainGetMaxVcpus(), this causes a
deadlock due to recursive mutex locking. The qemudDomainSetVcpus()
method should in fact be calling the internal method qemudGetMaxVCPUs().
This patch makes it do that, thus avoiding the recursive mutex locking."

I'm assuming that means this bug should be pretty easy to fix. Or is it
more complicated than just fixing the code and building a new package?

I wasn't able to find the file. It turns out for me it's
~/.libvirt/qemu/.xml

Making the change there and restarting the virtual machine worked (it's
only a virtual XP desktop, so it by no means needs to be runnig 24/7;
neither does my computer for that matter).

Thanks for your help!

[Bug 242289] Re: Jamendo streaming issues: Can't skip to further back in recording; Doesn't buffer enough before playing

2008-10-16 Thread Mark Darbyshire
I'm now using Intrepid 8.10 Beta. I haven't seen this happen so far (it
seems to wait to buffer for long enough), but I'm not a regular user of
Rhythmbox. I need to wait for the Internet to get really slow to test
this.

In short, I haven't filed a bug upstream, but this may not be a problem
anymore and I'll have to wait until I can test this.

If I do end up needing to file a bug upstream I'll post a link here.

[Bug 199975] Re: vlc video colour change

2008-10-21 Thread Mark Darbyshire
I find that when playing certain flv files the black and white portion
of the video plays fine, but the coloured parts overlaying the video
will be translated to the left or right so that the video has hideous
colours.

On Hardy I found that if I had this problem in Totem, I could still play
the video in VLC without any problems. However, in Intrepid, I have this
problem with more videos than I did in Hardy, and playing them in VLC
doesn't fix the problem. In VLC, however, switching to X11 output does
solve this (perhaps in Hardy it chose X11 by default, whereas in
Intrepid it's choosing XVideo by default).

For me, this bug is consistent as to which flvs it affects, but there
are some flvs that it didn't affect on Hardy that it does on Intrepid. I
don't know what might be different about these flvs.

Below are links to three flvs, all of them ripped from YouTube. The
first one hasn't had this problem in either Hardy or Intrepid. The
second has the problem only in Intrepid. The third has the problem in
both Hardy and Intrepid.

http://misc.markdarb.com/Not_the_Nine_O_Clock_News_Bathroom_Plan.flv
(neither)

http://misc.markdarb.com/Rowan_Atkinson_questions_God..flv (Intrepid)

http://misc.markdarb.com/Two_Ronnies_-_Mastermind.flv (Hardy and
Intrepid)

I'm using the 32-bit version of Intrepid Beta with all updates. I have a
GeForce 8600M GT. I've always used the proprietary drivers (although
wish I could instead use some nice free drivers with a nice open card,
hence avoiding all the annoyances NVIDIA cards are plagued with). I'm
currently using version 177 of the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver.

[Bug 227186] Re: Evince doesn't print PDF files

2008-07-23 Thread Mark Darbyshire
I have the same issue. When I try to print the evince process jumps up
to 100% CPU usage (or rather 50% for me since I have a dual core CPU).

On two occasions, however, the printer printed an error. The first time
this was presumably from a normal attempt to print. The second time it
was when I tried to print the print preview. The printed error is as
follows:

ERROR NAME;
   limitcheck
COMMAND;
   LZWDecode
OPERAND STACK;
   --filetype--
   --nametype--
   --dicttype--

I can also confirm that of the two pages Simon submitted, the I'm able
to print the one that supposedly prints, but unable to print the one
that supposedly doesn't.

According to the printer configuration tool, my printer's make and model
is "Brother HL-5250DN BR-Script3". I connect to it using Ethernet via a
router. It'- Device URI is "socket://192.168.1.100:9100".

I'm using Evince Document Viewer 2.22.2. I have no problems printing in
other programmes. Today is the first time I've been unable to print a
PDF in Evince.

When Evince fails to print anything, the document never appears in the
printing queue.

I've tried connecting to the printer using USB. The document appears in
the printing queue briefly but does not print.

I also tried using a Canan Pixma iP4300. Again Evince used 100% for a
period of time. Then the document appeared in the print queue. It did
print, but at an unacceptably low quality (very blurred).

If I try to print other pdf documents (such as the "working PDF") Evince
does not hog CPU, and the document prints very promptly.

Note: the document that I was first having trouble with is "Tutorial 1
Questions" at
http://www.math.canterbury.ac.nz/material/MATH109/08/S2/C/?s=5 and I do
not have any problems with the second tutorial listed on that page.

[Bug 242289] [NEW] Jamendo streaming issues: Can't skip to further back in recording; Doesn't buffer enough before playing

2008-06-23 Thread Mark Darbyshire
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When streaming a recording from Jamendo, I can't use the slider to
rewind and continue playback (regardless of whether it's paused or
playing when I move the slider). This is quite annoying, more so because
of the other problem...

The Internet's running very slowly at the moment. If a song's bitrate is
too high, so that it can't be downloaded quickly enough, it just keeps
pausing erratically.

It would be nice if Rhythmbox would detect how download a sufficient
buffer so that large files can be played continuously without breaks.
Failing that, it would be nice if I could at least manually pause
playback, rewind to the beginning, and wait until I guess enough will
have been loaded before starting playback. On this line of thought, a
nice feature would be an indicator of how much of the file has streamed
(in the same way as, for example, the youtube.com player does).

[Bug 119266] Re: Intel HDA Sound device doesn't work in gutsy

2007-10-13 Thread Mark Darbyshire
I got my sound card to work by installing the latest release candidate
of Alsa. I followed the instructions at http://www.alsa-
project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel but downloaded
1.0.15rc versions from http://www.alsa-
project.org/main/index.php/Download instead of 1.0.14 versions and it
worked (although I had errors installing alsa-utils which I duly
ignored, so they're probably not working, but I don't need them anyway
for now). Once 1.0.15 comes out as a "stable" version and is put into
Ubuntu this bug will be solved, but I really think something needs doing
about it before then.

[Bug 525807] Re: [upstream] [3.2.1] OOo Slideshow and Fullscreen modes - not full screen under compiz

2010-04-27 Thread Mark Darbyshire
This happens for me in 10.04. Worthy of mention is that if you have
openoffice.org-presenter-console installed then this also happens in the
fullscreen presenter console. As with the presentations, the screen gets
pushed down, with the result that the bottom of the screen is slightly
cut off behind the panels.

My workaround is to disable desktop effects in System > Preferences >
Appearance > Visual Effects, as with Compiz disabled fullscreen works
perfectly. Terribly frustrating, though. I thought the days of having to
disable desktop effects for some programs to work properly were gone. :(

Anyway, not to worry. Thanks for your work towards getting this
revolved, everyone. Here's hoping the fix will have arrived in time for
10.04.1.
