I got my sound card to work by installing the latest release candidate of Alsa. I followed the instructions at http://www.alsa- project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel but downloaded 1.0.15rc versions from http://www.alsa- project.org/main/index.php/Download instead of 1.0.14 versions and it worked (although I had errors installing alsa-utils which I duly ignored, so they're probably not working, but I don't need them anyway for now). Once 1.0.15 comes out as a "stable" version and is put into Ubuntu this bug will be solved, but I really think something needs doing about it before then.
