[Bug 38939] Re: MPlayer receives BadAlloc when playing very large movies using Xv

2009-05-29 Thread Marcerino
This issue is still/again present in Jaunty Jackalope. The problem
occurs with totem-gstreamer, but also with VLC player and mplayer. This
can be circumvented by not using Xvideo (all players have options for
this), e.g. use:

[Bug 374397] Re: glibgobject warning value location for gachararray passed as null

2009-05-10 Thread Marcerino
I see the same behaviour. There is also a series of rather annoying
beeps when shutting down, which I suspect is related (note above: last
message repeated 5 times; I think I get six beeps).

My system was updated from Hardy Heron to Jaunty Jackalope, maybe
something was not properly reconfigured/updated?

[Bug 117727] Re: cifs mounts: unable to move dangling symlinks (case of svn ceckout with symlinks)

2009-04-10 Thread Marcerino
I've also exprienced this problem, although for a different reason. The problem
seems to have been fixed in recent versions (3.3.x) of samba. See:
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6090

I tested removing dangling symlinks using Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) as
a server and that seems to work. As far as I understand, that should
mean that moving them also works.

As an aside: I am interested in this issue because I would like to
pam_mount homedirs using cifs. firefox creates a lock file that is a
dangling symlink. If the lock file cannot be removed, firefox cannot be
started...

[Bug 501294] Re: [Karmic] Shutdown/restart from gnome menu does not work

2010-03-28 Thread Marcerino
Looks like this was something specific to my system: I had two console-
kit-daemon executables, one in /usr/local/sbin and one in /usr/sbin. I
removed the one in /usr/local (together with ck-list-sessions etc) and
now things are almost working.

However, console-kit-daemon does not start on boot. I found some error
messages in /var/log/:0-slave.log:

gdm-simple-slave[916]: WARNING: Unable to open session: Cannot launch
daemon, file not found or permissions invalid

gdm-simple-slave[916]: WARNING: unable to determine if seat can activate
sessions: Cannot launch daemon, file not found or permissions invalid

which I suspect are related. I can start console-kit-daemon myself (with
sudo) in the terminal, though.

I will reinstall gdm and gdm-session-bin to see whether that fixed the
problem...

[Bug 520046] [NEW] [Karmic] X freezes when attaching external monitor

2010-02-10 Thread Marcerino
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On my laptop, Dell Latitude D430 with an intel 945 graphics card, the X
server freezes when trying to activate an external screen. This problem
is new on Karmic. The problem occurs when booting without external
screen and then plugging in a screen (projector) and switching on,
either via keyboard or the 'Display' utility in the
'System->Preferences' menu.

I collected a batch buffer dump and other debug info following these
instructions:

2010-02-11 Thread Marcerino
Hello everyone. The original problem that I reported seems to have a

while all of the people above seem to have Atheros. I propose to close

Re: [Bug 461342] Re: [Karmic] nm-applet does not start -- fix provided in report

2009-10-31 Thread Marcerino
The problem also occurs for the first session on my machine.

In fact, I think it started when I updated to 9.04 (or soon after). Hoping
it would be fixed by updating to Karmic, but that did not help.

NetworkManager is running, so often a network connection is established, but
you need nm-applet to switch networks and sometimes to connect to a new
network...

[Bug 504963] [NEW] [Karmic] host -4 does IPv6 lookup -- times out

2010-01-08 Thread Marcerino
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

When using 'host' to do a dns lookup on Karmic, I get a fast initial
response for the IPv4 lookup:

m...@purple:~$ host www.google.com
www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com.
www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.99
www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.147
www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.104

but then a long wait and a timeout on IPv6:

;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

I guess this is because my home network router/DNS cache does not
support IPv6. This timeout for host lookups with 'host' is not such a
problem, but also seems to affect firefox (fixable with a setting) and
ssh logins to remote machines. Why does the host command look for a IPv6
address after It gets a good IPv4 response?

I tried forcing only IPv4 lookup with 'host -4', but the result is the
same:

m...@purple:~$ host -4 www.google.com
www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com.
www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.147
www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.104
www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.99
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Is that behaviour intended? Is there really no way to gracefully ignore IPv6
when the local network does not support it? I am not the only one to run into
this problem. See, for example:

[Bug 504963] Re: [Karmic] host -4 does IPv6 lookup -- times out

2010-01-08 Thread Marcerino
I some posts, I found that ip -6 route may provide useful info. Here is
the output:

m...@purple:~$ ip -6 r
fe80::/64 dev wlan0  proto kernel  metric 256  mtu 1500 advmss 1440 hoplimit 0

a friend of mine does not have the problem on the LTS version (8.04) of Ubuntu,
and a different network. The output of the above on her machine is
fe80::/64 dev eth1  metric 256  expires 21330140sec mtu 1500 advmss 1440
hoplimit 4294967295
ff00::/8 dev eth1  metric 256  expires 21330140sec mtu 1500 advmss 1440
hoplimit 4294967295

Could it be that there is something wrong with the IPv6 kernel setup in
Karmic/on my system?

Re: [Bug 504963] Re: [Karmic] host -4 does IPv6 lookup -- times out

2010-01-18 Thread Marcerino
Yes, the DNS server in my DSL modem does not support IPv6 (A requests
?). I am wondering why 'host' does a IPv6 (AA) lookup after receiving a
valid response on IPv4 (AAA request).

I try looking into the debug printouts, but did not learn much. I can post
the debug-output if it is helpful.

[Bug 520046] Re: [Karmic] X freezes when attaching external monitor

2010-02-24 Thread Marcerino
I have compiled the new xserver-xorg-video-intel (ubuntu Lucid package,
based on 2.9.1) and installed it on my system, but that does not solve
the problem. So if the underlying issue is in the driver, it will still
be there in Lucid. Are there changes to xserver that may alleviate the
problem? Did you have a look at my logfiles, batch buffer dump? Does
that provide a hint?

[Bug 520046] Re: [Karmic] X freezes when attaching external monitor

2010-02-24 Thread Marcerino
Some more tests show that the problem is most likely in the 'DRI'
subsystem; if I add 'option "DRI" "Off"' to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the
switching works. I also tried NoMTRR and AIGLX Off, as suggested here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze, but that doesn't help.
'DRI' seems to be the main culprit.

Also, the problem only occurs when switching using the 'Display' tool in
System/Preferences (i.e. when X is running). If the monitor is
connecting before logging in (during boot or during the process of
logging out and going to the login screen), the external monitor is
activated automatically and keeps working when X starts.

[Bug 501294] Re: [Karmic] Shutdown/restart from gnome menu does not work

2010-04-07 Thread Marcerino
OK. I figured it out. It turns out that I had an old file:
/usr/local/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.service

which takes precedence over:
/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.service
(not /usr/share, not usr/share/local)

The old file was wrong. Probably a leftover my old install of console-
kit from source which I used to try to fix this problem previously.

Sorry for the noise -- Closing this ticket...

[Bug 504963] Re: [Karmic] host -4 does IPv6 lookup -- times out

2010-03-04 Thread Marcerino
A similar issue is discussed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eglibc/+bug/417757

but I think that's about a different DNS resolver. E.g. in Firefox you
can switch off ipv6 lookups and the delay is gone. Also note the comment
in that thread:

The 5 second lag occurs with the Livebox (used by Orange, 12 million

[Bug 501294] Re: [Karmic] Shutdown/restart from gnome menu does not work

2010-03-27 Thread Marcerino
This issue persists after upgrading to Lucid (beta). After the upgrade,
only policykit-1 packages are installed, so the upgrade looks OK.
However after playing a bit with the packages, I also lost the 'suspend'
button in the 'indicator-applet'.

I now see errors of the type:

Mar 27 16:35:09 purple gnome-session[1404]: WARNING: Could not connect
to ConsoleKit: Could not get owner of name 'org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit':
no such name

in /var/log/daemon.log

It seems that the corresponding policies in
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.consolekit.policy have been
renamed 'org.freedesktop.consolekit' (lowercase). Is that a problem?

[Bug 504963] Re: [Karmic] host -4 does IPv6 lookup -- times out

2010-02-08 Thread Marcerino
Hi Chuck,

Attached the debug printout from host -D. The first two files
host_before_wait.log and host_all.log are from just running 'host -D
www.google.com, while the file host_minus4*.log are from running host -D -4
www.google.com. In each case, the 'before_wait' file is the log up to the
moment that the program gets temporarily stuck; it waits about half a second
and then later once or twice more. Each time just after printing:
unlock_lookup dighost.c:2145
the full log is in the *all.log files.

Hope this is useful. Let me know if you need more info.

Marco.

[Bug 461342] [NEW] [Karmic] nm-applet does not start -- fix provided in report

2009-10-26 Thread Marcerino
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

nm-applet does not start, although it is part of the gnome-startup
applications.

When trying to start as a regular user from the command line:

m...@purple:~$ nm-applet --sm-disable

** (nm-applet:2656): WARNING **:   request_name(): Could not acquire the
NetworkManagerUserSettings service.
Error: (9) Connection ":1.67" is not allowed to own the service

This can be solved by adding a line:

to the section of:

I also tried not adding it to the 'default' context, but to
'at_console="true"', but that does not seem to work.

Re: [Bug 460581] Re: [Karmic] host lookup error

2009-10-27 Thread Marcerino
Do you maybe have any further suggestions for how to debug this?

Something must be interfering with those lookups. The effect is new in
Karmic, so would be nice to figure out what it is.

What is the difference between the first lookup that 'host' does and the
second?

It seems that something is blocking the corresponding network traffic. II
have no firewall, so that can't be it. I looked at various log-files in
/var/log, but the only suspicious thing I see are a lot of messages from
wpa_supplicant. Is there something I can do to verify whether this is
related? My network is wireless with simple WEP-authentication, so maybe
wpa_supplicant is not needed? If so, why has it been started?

Best regards,

Marco.

[Bug 399531] Re: shutdown menu immediately logs out

2009-10-27 Thread Marcerino
I still have this or a similar issue with today's Karmic. If I choose
'shutdown' from the session menu, I am logged out, but the computer does
not shut down.

In the daemon.log, I get the following message:
Oct 27 23:26:02 purple gnome-session[1849]: WARNING: Unable to stop system: Not
privileged for action: org.freedesktop.consolekit.system.stop no

So it seems to be an issue with permissions inside gnome. Not sure where
to change the setting, though. Any ideas?

After upgrade to Karmic, I can no longer shutdown or restart from the
