I've also exprienced this problem, although for a different reason. The problem seems to have been fixed in recent versions (3.3.x) of samba. See: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6090 I tested removing dangling symlinks using Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) as a server and that seems to work. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel On my laptop, Dell Latitude D430 with an intel 945 graphics card, the X server freezes when trying to activate an external screen. [Bug 504963] [NEW] [Karmic] host -4 does IPv6 lookup -- times out
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bind9 When using 'host' to do a dns lookup on Karmic, I get a fast initial response for the IPv4 lookup: m...@purple:~$ host www.google.com www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com. www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.99 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.147 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.104 but then a long wait and a timeout on IPv6: ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached I guess this is because my home network router/DNS cache does not support IPv6. This timeout for host lookups with 'host' is not such a problem, but also seems to affect firefox (fixable with a setting) and ssh logins to remote machines. Why does the host command look for a IPv6 address after It gets a good IPv4 response? I tried forcing only IPv4 lookup with 'host -4', but the result is the same: m...@purple:~$ host -4 www.google.com www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com. www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.147 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.104 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.77.99 ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached Is that behaviour intended? Re: [Bug 504963] Re: [Karmic] host -4 does IPv6 lookup -- times out
Yes, the DNS server in my DSL modem does not support IPv6 (A requests ?). I am wondering why 'host' does a IPv6 (AA) lookup after receiving a valid response on IPv4 (AAA request). I try looking into the debug printouts, but did not learn much. I can post the debug-output if it is helpful. Marco. I have compiled the new xserver-xorg-video-intel (ubuntu Lucid package, based on 2.9.1) and installed it on my system, but that does not solve the problem. So if the underlying issue is in the driver, it will still be there in Lucid. Are there changes to xserver that may alleviate the problem? Did you have a look at my logfiles, batch buffer dump? [Bug 520046] Re: [Karmic] X freezes when attaching external monitor
Some more tests show that the problem is most likely in the 'DRI' subsystem; if I add 'option "DRI" "Off"' to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the switching works. I also tried NoMTRR and AIGLX Off, as suggested here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze, but that doesn't help. 'DRI' seems to be the main culprit. Also, the problem only occurs when switching using the 'Display' tool in System/Preferences (i.e. when X is running). If the monitor is connecting before logging in (during boot or during the process of logging out and going to the login screen), the external monitor is activated automatically and keeps working when X starts. -- [Karmic] X freezes when attaching external monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/520046 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 460581] Re: [Karmic] host lookup error
Do you maybe have any further suggestions for how to debug this? Something must be interfering with those lookups. The effect is new in Karmic, so would be nice to figure out what it is. What is the difference between the first lookup that 'host' does and the second? It seems that something is blocking the corresponding network traffic. II have no firewall, so that can't be it. I looked at various log-files in /var/log, but the only suspicious thing I see are a lot of messages from wpa_supplicant. Is there something I can do to verify whether this is related? My network is wireless with simple WEP-authentication, so maybe wpa_supplicant is not needed? If so, why has it been started? Best regards, Marco. [Bug 399531] Re: shutdown menu immediately logs out
I still have this or a similar issue with today's Karmic. If I choose 'shutdown' from the session menu, I am logged out, but the computer does not shut down. In the daemon.log, I get the following message: Oct 27 23:26:02 purple gnome-session[1849]: WARNING: Unable to stop system: Not privileged for action: org.freedesktop.consolekit.system.stop no So it seems to be an issue with permissions inside gnome. [Bug 460006] [NEW] wpa supplicant causes large timeouts
